I am going to include a lot of out-of-character text in this post. Remember that such information is for players' benefit, but your characters will only know what is in the plain text. :)

Despite being indoors, a terrible wind begins blowing through the Green Market, shaking the tree in the central plaza and the many decorations placed in the various stalls. Fruit and vegetables in carts, bins, and baskets shift about as the ground shakes as if an earthquake were hitting.

SURPRISE ROUND

Initiative:
Ninya: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25
Omar: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Ranar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Zahra: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Zahra: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8
Pumpkin: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 7 + 1 = 13

This is a haunt. Everyone rolled high for Initiative, but only Manuk rolled high enough on Perception to hear the sounds of Shoanti chanting and (silence) to notice that some of the objects in the Green Market begin stirring.

No one was able to act in the surprise round. At initiative count 10, the haunt begins manifesting, and everyone becomes aware that something is happening.

Pieces of produce from around the market begin moving of their own accord. At the same time, the tree on the north end of the haunt’s area begins swaying unnaturally.

This haunt is especially slow to manifest. It has begun manifesting, but it isn't fully formed yet. It can still be harmed by positive energy until it is fully manifested. I need to roll Perception again to see if anyone is able to tell that it is a haunt. (I will substitute Knowledge (religion) for those of you for which that is the higher skill.)

Haunt

Omar and Ranar recognize this is a haunt. They are both currently in the area of silence.

Reading lips is a DC 20 Linguistics check. Also, Omar can end the silence spell as a standard action.

Pathfinders are up!

Blue Thug (63 damage, prone, disarmed)
Ninya (both starknives out)
Pumpkin (mirror image, 3 images)
Zeeva
Omar (3 nonlethal, silence 20 ft., glaive is on the ground)

Looks like I'm going to litter the whole area with weapons. :)

Omar is surprised but realizes immediately what must be happening. Dropping his morningstar, he moves into what he judges is the center of the area and holds up his holy symbol. A wave of energy goes out from him, covering the tree and both areas of flying produce.

Making sure he is looking towards those still in the field of silence, Omar clearly and with exaggerated movements of his lips enunciates a single word: "Haunt!" Now it makes sense why it was so important to Zeeva that we avoid violence! That is likely the trigger.

Sure! Everyone gets a +2 bonus on Linguistics to read Omar's lips, because of his own Linguistics ability.

Korvosa map | Green Market map

Waves of positive energy ripple through the market, emanating from Omar. Is it possible for groceries to recoil? Those vegetables moving telekinetically seem to do exactly that, as does the large tree, in response to Omar's channeling.

Vorel zaps a melon with his wand as it rolls by. It only does half damage because it is an object, but I'm going to apply it to what is to come.

Linguistics: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 2 = 23

Zahra has been studying the lips of her beloved for a very long time. "Is a Haunt!" She yells it so that others can hear.

Knowledge Religion, Haunts: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

She doesn't remember anything specific about Haunts, but seeing Omar channel, she remembers that undead are evil. "If you have holy vater, now is time to use it!" She springs her wand of protection from evil from its sheath and applies one charge to herself, preparing to hit as many of her fellow party members with the wand as she can.

Protection from Evil, self. Man, I wish I had the Magic Circle Spell!

Handle Animal, Pumpkin to Push: 1d20 + 18 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 18 + 4 = 25 Just enough...

With a gesture, Zahra orders Pumpkin to drag Narris back, away from the haunts.

GM, if you with to apply a penalty for the zone of silence, the push won't happen and Pumpkin will stay guarding Narris. Up to you.

Zahra needs to move to use her wand (or to shout to others). Wands use a command word.

Where Omar is located, everyone outside of the silence can hear him say "Haunt!"

@ Zahra: Yeah, I think a –2 penalty to Handle Animal is reasonable since Pumpkin can't hear you.

Zahra was already out of the zone of silence. Remember? I talked to Tika. I thought that Omar was still in the silent zone, which is why I made the check. If so, then I didn't need the linguistics check and I would have known more about haunts. And made the handle animal check. Sigh.

Knowledge Religion, Haunts: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

I think I've dealt with Haunts before but can't be sure. I don't know a lot about trees, but this definitely isn't natural. Religious stuff is so complicated...

Seeing Omar channel positive energy in the middle of the swirling market, Ninya uses her CLW on the nearby tree.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Maybe it'll work, or at least keep this tree from uprooting itself.

Leaning down, she holds out her hand to the blue thug to help him up. "Bet you didn't sign up for this," she smirks. "You might want to get out of here while you still can."

Zeeva gasps and hustles over behind some fruit stands and hides by a cart of pears.

Ninya gives a hand to the man she earlier knifed. He accepts her help and runs out of the small park.

His buddy gets up and runs and hides between two produce stands.

The swirling vortices of produce coalesce to form two strange creatures. Each one, a mass of tangled vines and dripping slime rises on two trunk-like legs, reeking of rot and freshly turned earth.

Knowledge (nature) 16+:
These large intelligent plants are shambling mounds. They are immune to electricity and resistant to fire. They also have darkvision, in addition to the usual plant traits.

Knowledge (nature) 21+:
A shambling mound uses its vines to grab and constrict its prey.

Knowledge (nature) 26+:
Any electricity attack used against a shambling mound increases its health and constitution.

Meanwhile, the tree in the center of the park animates and uproots itself. Were it not for the image of a sinister face peeking out from its dark gray bark, this would look like any other ragged oak tree.

Knowledge (nature) 18+:
This huge intelligent plant is a quickwood. It is immune to electricity and fire in addition to the usual plant traits.

Knowledge (nature) 20+:
Quickwoods have darkvision. More interestingly, they can see through any oak tree within 100 yards, as if using clairvoyance; they do not need line of sight to use this ability. If a quickwood has line of sight to even one oak tree, then it cannot be flanked.

Knowledge (nature) 23+:
A quickwood has dozens of exceptionally long roots that it can use to pull its prey to its mouth.

Knowledge (nature) 28+:
The quickwood is resistant to magic. Any spells it successfully resists are absorbed by the Quickwood and allow it to radiate an aura of fear.

NOTE: These are two separate Knowledge (nature) checks. Please indicate in your dice with "Knowledge (nature), mound" and "Knowledge (nature), tree." Thanks.

It is the plants' turn. I will compose their actions in a new post. Feel free to roll Knowledge checks if you'd like.

Ranar throws his bomb and it strikes the targets true, but the fire seems less effective than he would have expected. (The orange mound took no damage.)
