Okay Zert!

Darius seems a bit troubled by the prospect of Boots in a cage and the raccoon is doubly upset.

"So you think he's kept here against his will. If we sneak his magical essence out won't he be missed? We were told to take nothing after all."

"I was thinking of that as well Darius" says Conundrum, "but from how hard the lion worked to avoid being noticed watching us, it might be some time before his departure was observed. I suppose we'll learn more from Ilyena. If we have to take anything from the library we do have some dust of illusion we could use to cover it up with."

"I wonder if she's another magical creature - and I wonder what a newcomer is from the lion's point of view. She could have been here for 500 years."

Following Zirt and Darius into the hallway beyond the Lion Conundrum asks "Wait a moment - I will ask the Guardian if he can tell us anything about what's in the rooms here."

Stepping back into the room with the Guardian Conundrum says "Your pardon Guardian, but can you tell me something about what is stored in the rooms beyond here?"

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

With his deeper knowledge of such matters, Conundrum concludes that the Guardian is an intelligent magic item, considerably more powerful than any of the party. He's not sure, but he believes that, in additional to its magical abilities, it might be able to deliver a fierce bite.

The Guardian seems slightly startled when Conundrum comes back into the room, saying, "Back so soon? What's that you ask, what is stored in the rooms beyond? Well, needless to say, I have a vast knowledge of all the works that are in the library, as well as many important moments in history that have been related to me by Lion Blades under my tutelage over the centuries. Sadly, knowing that the books are here does not mean I know quite where they all are, as the collections beyond this room have changed over the years. But if you wish to find anything in the main library chamber here, I'd be happy to help you."

"Yes, start on the right and start quickly. Our time is dwindling."

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

You make your way to the southern end of the hall and open the door there. It reveals a small and simple room, sparsely decorated with only the most basic furniture and a stoic portrait of Grand Prince Stavian III. An engraved brass plaque on the frame of the portrait reads, “In the end, loyalty is its own reward.”

Where the rest of the library has been immaculately clean, this room shows more evidence of use. It’s still tidy, but a tray bearing the remains of a meal sits on the desk and the place is not as perfectly kept up as the rest of the library, perhaps because its inhabitant is blind.

Sitting at the desk is a middle-aged woman with a red blindfold across her eyes. She wears a rather old-fashioned dress and around her neck hangs a necklace with a gold pendant depicting a majestic lion head.

As you enter the room, she pushes back her chair and stands, and you hear jingling of the ring of keys now visible at her waist. She unconsciously drops a hand to still the noise and asks uncertainly, ”Who’s there? Why have you come into my room?” More firmly, she adds, ”The study chamber is next door, though as students you ought to know that.”

"We're very sorry to disturb you, Ms. Iliyana," replies the gnome contritely. "We were only looking around for some texts, and Mister Lion Guardian was very helpful and said some very nice things about you, and well, we just wanted to meet you and... and... that's a very beautiful necklace you're wearing."

Hoping to divert her with thoughts of the Guardian and give us some legitimacy...Anyone have a Charm Person handy ;-)

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

The caretaker smiles upon hearing that the Guardian has spoken well of her, and her smile broadens further at Zirt’s compliment of her necklace. At the same time, her brow crinkles ever so slightly with suspicion, as Zirt’s delivery seems a bit lacking in sincerity.

”The Guardian said you should speak with me?,” she asks, turning to Conundrum, clearly a bit puzzled. ”That’s interesting. I’m sorry, perhaps I’ve presumed too much. You don’t sound like any of the students or others I know here. Would you tell me who you are, please? I don’t mean to be rude, but my blindness does require me to be a bit direct at times, to understand what is happening around me.”

Conundrum – are you keeping track of how many times you’ve used Inspiration? It’s generally been Knowledge rolls, where using it doesn’t count against your daily total, but Diplomacy does count. An easy way to track it is just put something like “3/9 used today” in your post.

Grand Lodge

Human Investigator 4 - HP: 21/31 - AC 16/T:11/FF:15 - Perception +8 Fort +3, Reflex +6, Will +6 - Inspiration 5/9

Did my previous 29 on the Knowledge Nobility give me any information of specific members of the blades serving the Grand Prince? I'm hoping there is a specific name I can use in place of the Grand Prince's in the statement below?

"Lady Ilyana, the Grand Prince has asked us to investigate the war against the Whispering Tyrant. Apparently he has heard some concerning reports recently and is looking for a briefing on ancient tactics." Conundrum pauses here to gauge Ilyana's reaction.

In the quote above if there's someone less obvious than the Grand Prince who is a member of the Blades I'd love to replace that name...

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

Conundrum – yes, let’s say that from that Knowledge check you know that Sir Kelven Coates is a senior Lion Blade who might have tasked you with such research. Also – please see my question in my previous post about tracking uses of Inspiration.

”Oh, I am no great lady, just a librarian, but thank you for saying so,” Iliyana replies modestly. ”And you say Sir Coates asked you to research the Shining Crusade? Well, I’ve a moment free, so I can show you around a bit.” She pats the keys at her hip to check that she has them, and says, “Where would you like to start? You’ve already been in the main library, so do you want to go to the study chamber next door, or the ancient books room? If you want me to unlock the ancient books room, you may have to give me a clearer explanation of exactly why you’re here, so I can explain to my superiors if they ask about it.”

Some serious diplomancing coming up…

Here goes nothing... Aid another from anyone with Diplomacy would be really welcome about now :-)

"Well," Conundrum begins "as I understand it, the report Sir Coates received suggested that there has been a change in the Wardstones in Mendev. While not an immediate threat, Sir Coates has asked us to investigate the ancient battles with the Whispering Tyrant's forces. Many of the public accounts have been...adjusted...to suit one interest or another. His hope is that we might learn something in the early original accounts which might be of use."

You guys can throw down some Aid rolls on Conundrum's Diplomacy, no? You have already swayed her some in your direction, with the initial interaction you had with her.

I'd also allow some retcon to Aid on Diplomacy checks for that initial encounter, since I know Rakshara couldn't post then, and others may not have been able to either.

Edit: this post is no longer really needed, but I'm leaving it since to document how many nearly-simultaneous posts we had!

Darius shuffles anxiously under the blind woman's scrutiny.

"We're here to learn of course", he explains. "History's very important to us."

The caretaker smiles down in the direction of Zirt's voice and says, "Indeed, I know how rumors are. And your work here does sound important." She pauses as she's interrupted by Darius' apparent non-sequitur, then shakes her head and continues, "I think I can open these doors for you, since you're here at Sir Coates' behest."

She moves confidently down the hall, saying, "By the by, my name is Iliyana, Iliyana Baslee. Where do you want to go first?"

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance Iliyana. I'm Bastion Riddell, Please call me Bastion." Conundrum says, making room for her to pass and then following her down the hall. "Perhaps if we started with the ancient texts - do you have any suggestions?"

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

Iliyana hesitates at Conundrum's question, and a look of sadness flashes across her face. "No, I don't have any suggestions in particular," she replies as walks past the door next to her quarters and stops to unlock the next one, " thought I can tell you that this room houses the oldest, rarest books in the entire collection.” As she opens the door and steps inside, you can see that bookcases cover nearly every inch of the walls in this room, which is only faintly illuminated by small lights set into the ceiling. A glass-paned door seals each panel of shelves, keeping the ancient tomes stored within free of dust.

”The room is kept fairly dark to keep the works from fading, and each shelf is sealed to keep the paper in good condition,” she continues, as if she could almost see the room. ”I should tell you that I have been instructed never to touch the books in the center shelf on the east wall,” she adds, gesturing toward a set of shelves, ”though I do not know with any certainty why. I expect the books there are particularly special or noteworthy, but I have never read any of them and do not know.”

Zirt studies the bookcase carefully but doesn't see anything about its construction that is unusual or that distinguishes it from the shelves around it. As she peers through the glass, though, she does see some loose sheets of paper fluttering a bit, as if a breeze is blowing them. Like in the rest of the library, the air in this room is cool and still, and Zirt neither hears nor feels any kind of breeze.

Detecting magics.

DM | Map Stuff | Burden of Envy

The case opens smoothly and easily, as well-maintained as all other aspects of the library. Darius studies the books inside in puzzlement, as they flutter and shift, though there is no more wind inside the case than there is in the room. His confusion turns to fear and amazement as the books come alive, lifting off the shelf and forming a whirling, flapping swarm around him.

The storm of books engulfs Darius and Rayne, smashing them with heavy bindings and covering them in a multitude of fine cuts. Darius, the more scholarly of the two, feels like all the paper cuts he’s ever received in the course of his studies are visited upon him in an instant. Rayne is simply startled that paper can hurt him. Both begin to bleed from the many tiny slices delivered by the books strafing them.

As Iliyana hears the peculiar sound of books flapping their pages like the wings of large, silk-bound birds, she cries out, ”What is that? What is happening?”
