The Waking Rune

Gratus, you appear to have a speed of 20. Since you can't see where you are going through the blue fog, you proceed at half speed. A double move doesn't get you out of the fog yet, so you have no target to attack with Hand of the Apprentice. On the plus side, your Necklace of Adaptation means that the blue fog cannot harm you.

Round 3 summary:
Paicho dismisses the white fog.
Wembly dismisses Rosco the hound archon, and summons a celestial grizzly bear, which bites, claws, and bear hugs Zahra.
Rocky performs a leaping dragon kick on Zahra, and his follow up attacks knock Zahra out and injure one of the marids.
Korai threatens the marids with his gun Dazzling Display. One of the marids seems to be affected.
Korai will save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Gratus brings up the rear.

Korai:
That marid to the north, the talkative one, paid absolutely no attention to your gunplay. Plus it's talking nonsense about food and drink whilst a battle is raging. That can only mean one thing: it's an illusion!

The northerly marid continues to offer you things: "Perhaps it is gold and jewels you came for? You know genies can grant wishes, don't you? Ask, and it shall be yours!"

The southerly marid, disconcerted by Korai's gun-play, attempts to extricate himself.

concentration: 1d20 + 15 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 15 + 4 = 36

The marid transforms into an insubstantial blue mist bit of a theme here. It floats up to the ceiling and away, out of your reach.

Rocky, you get an AoO on the misty marid as it retreats.

The Waking Rune

The ceiling height is 25'. (It's not specified in the scenario. The outer chamber is only 8' high, but a marid is 16' tall and Moukadeem is supposed to be able to fight normally so his chamber must be much higher).

Rocky lands a blow on the retreating misty marid. Although it is only mist, it reacts as if struck. It flies up to the ceiling.

Rocky, did you want the damage you did to Moukadeem last round to be non-lethal or lethal?

Paicho, you wade through the water the water makes this difficult terrain so you don't quite reach the alcove. However I'm happy for you to make the knowledge check. The runes on the iron lamp indicate potent binding magics, although nothing indicates that they still have power. This must certainly be the lamp that imprisoned Moukadeem. You also note three chests, standing in the water of the alcove.

Korai goes splashing through the water. You note no traps under the illusory marid.

Wembly, though you can't communicate with Big Ben, a summoned creature attacks "your opponents." I'm going to rule that you can change your designated "opponents" for the purposes of the summoning magic.

Big Ben drops Zahra into the water and bounds after the northerly marid.

The Waking Rune

Since Wembly cast another summons, he doesn't have time to reach Zahra as well. He has to wade through water that comes up to his hips (difficult terrain). Rocky, do you want to change your actions?

Zephyr's whirlwind sweeps into misty Moukadeem.

whirlwind vs larger gaseous enemy: The whirlwind ability only causes damage and entraps creatures smaller than the whirlwind. A medium air elemental's whirlwind is 5' across at its base, and a maximum of 30' tall. Its width at the top is half its height. So in this room Zephyr can be up to 12' across at the top: but he's still a medium air elemental. Only "creatures one or more size categories smaller" than the whirlwind/elemental can be caught and take damage. However, creatures in gaseous form "are subject to the effects of wind." So I will rule that Zephyr cannot damage or entrap Moukadeem, but the strong winds will force concentration checks if he tries to cast spells or use SLAs.

The Waking Rune

round 4 summary:

Paicho wades towards the runecarved lamp and examines it.

Korai suspects the illusory marid hides another trap, but does not detect one.

Big Ben, the summoned celestial bear, drops Zahra's unconscious body in the water and attacks the illusory marid, before it is dismissed when Wembly summons an air elemental.

The elemental, Zephyr, forms a whirlwind and flies into the gaseous mad marid Moukadeem. Whilst ineffective in terms of damage, this is at least somewhat distracting.

Rocky picks up Zahra and deposits her in the foggy passageway, but notes that she has inhaled a lungful of water and still needs help.

Rocky only, Heal DC5:
Zahra is still drowning but she can be saved by any method that would normally stabilise a dying character. You have seconds left in which to save her. There are no rules for recovering from drowning, so I am going to treat it the same as recovering from the dying condition.

"Would you like to be entertained, perhaps? Dancing? A song! I know many wonderful melodies! How about the Ballad of the Tearful Triton?" says the illusory marid.

Misty Moukadeem tries to get away from the elemental. Although he's not truly entrapped, I'm going to have him attempt a reflex save as if he was.
reflex DC16: 1d20 + 12 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 12 + 2 = 30

Moukadeem swirls away from the whirlwind. So, you came for Zahra eh? Looks like you've killed her! Too late to stop her from freeing me! Now, you will all die too. The smooth, deep voice sounds in your heads.

Then, softly glowing blue sigils form around the insubstantial genie, and the water in the chamber rises up over your heads! It does not extend to the foggy corridor, but the whole chamber is now underwater.

Spellcraft DC21:
Moukadeem used a Control Water SLA.

Underwater combat rules now in effect.

"ඔක්කොම උනා, මම දිය යටින්! මගේ මුදුනට හැර අනෙක් සියල්ලම! එය බිම ස්පර්ශ වන තරම් නරකයි - උහ්!" says Zephyr, though it's just bubbles to most of you.

The Waking Rune

underwater potions:
Well, that's a dilemma. The rules for the Potion Sponge item in Advanced Race Guide state that you can't drink a potion from a vial underwater. But there are several reasons why some GMs don't enforce that in PFS. Firstly the ARG is not part of the Core Assumption - the material that all GMs are expected to have access to; the norm is that material outside the Core Assumption adds options, rather than removes them. There is precedent to the contrary however - like some of the feats and systems in Ultimate Intrigue. But it is unusual for an item in a non-core book, and an item that is also specified for a particular race (a restriction specifically removed for PFS), to change the core rules. Secondly, if a player does not own ARG then he has no rule saying that only a Potion Sponge allows drinking a potion underwater; he can find the rule in the PRD, but he still doesn't know the rule exists in order to go looking for it. If the GM doesn't own the ARG, and hasn't memorised the PRD or frequented the forums, how can he enforce the Potion Sponge rule? This also creates a situation wherein a player and/or GM who owns the ARG is "worse off" than one who doesn't.

BUT: the potion sponge, and its rule that you can't drink a potion from a vial underwater, is part of the PRD and I am aware of it.

I will make a compromise ruling, because my view is that potion vials are so small (1 inch by 2 inches) that you can fit the whole thing in your mouth - especially if your mouth is a ruddy big beak! You can drink a potion from a vial underwater as a full round action - this doesn't include the action necessary to draw the potion from your gear.

Also, note that if you have a different Perform skill that will rely upon sight rather than sound you can restart your Inspire Courage. Sound does travel underwater, but language doesn't work so well unless it's Aquan (or another aquatic racial language).

Thanks and musings:

Thanks that sounds good to me.

I've GMed and played a far amount of Pathfinder and had never run across that dilemma before, despite participating in a couple scenarios with underwater encounters. It just hadn't come up.

I was about to post drinking a potion and got to thinking, I wonder if I can and so looked it up, and found what you said in your post. Thought it best to just get your ruling on it.

Totally cool with what you decided.

As for IC, I do speak Aquan...but not sure the rest do or could benefit from it if they don't understand what I'm saying. Also have Perform dance, but was thinking I probably need to succeed at a swim check to pull that off.

Paicho attempts to tread water, as he touches Gamin's hilt (guidance), then retrieves a potion from his pouch.

Swim + guidance: 1d20 - 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 + 1 = 10

move to retrieve; no standard, hold breath 1 of 24 rnds

The Waking Rune

Inspire Courage doesn't have the Language Dependent trait, so if you can orate or sing in Aquan everyone can hear it and get the benefits. They might not understand their words, but just like listening to music their emotions are stirred. I'll also allow underwater dancing with a DC15 Swim or Dance check - something exotic you learned from a merfolk, or a gillman perhaps.

A successful swim check lets you move half your speed as a full round action or a quarter of your speed as a move action. If you're heavily armoured or encumbered I'll say it costs move to swim up, but otherwise it's the same. Since you started 15' away horizontally from Paicho you couldn't also swim upwards and finish next to Paicho - I'll let you decide what combination of vertical and horizontal you prefer, up to 15' movement. Drawing a dagger as part of the move works as normal. Yes, this will cost you breath.

Gratus, the concentration check is 15 + spell level, so you easily passed.

round 5 summary:

Paicho treads water at the bottom of the 'pool', and draws a vial from his pack.

Korai swims up, hoping to find air perhaps? You have the main light source Korai - a sunrod. You can tell that the chamber is not completely full of water, there is air at the top. Moukadeem was above the waterline in gaseous form.

Zephyr continues to harass the mad misty marid, the elemental now effectively a vortex. Elementals are outsiders that do not need to breathe - but an air elemental doesn't have a swim speed, so it is not as agile underwater as in the air. Zephyr's vortex/whirlwind ends this round, though he can reform it at will.

Wembly chews on an alchemical crystal that provides him with breath.

Rocky rescues Zahra from watery death.

Gratus casts Blessing of Fervour. This catches everyone except for Rocky. It includes Zephyr also. The boundary of the water blocks line of effect; also Rocky and Paicho would be too far apart to be covered by one casting.

The illusory marid in the north continues to offer you luxuries and riches, though the words are indistinct through the water.

Taking the speed boost from Blessing of Fervor, increasing speed to 60 ft. 1/4 speed = 15 ft, so going up and diagonally backwards two 'cubes' should be a single move action. That should put me roughly inside of the illusion.

Korai continues to ascend to the surface. Finally reaching the surface, he takes a deep breath of air, puts a little distance between himself and his foe, then taunts the Marid.

"Interesting hypothesis, but the way you fled from my gun makes me think otherwise."

He turns, flaring his cloak out behind him as he does so, but making it appear as though he is swimming left while he kicks off to swim right, hoping to use the illusory foe as concealment.

Using Equipment Trick (Cloak) to create a diversion to hide. Don't judge my idiotic feat selection.

Bluff: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20

If that succeeds (which it probably doesn't), and if the illusion can provide concealment...
Stealth, speed penalty: 1d20 + 23 - 5 ⇒ (11) + 23 - 5 = 29

With his aquan words echoing through the chamber, Paicho pops the potion bottle into his beak, works the stopper free and forces the liquid down his throat. This is bad. Gratus is pretty much rendered immovable on a bad swim check....
I also didn't prepare anythign that could aid the party in breathing....
Ehmm I still used up breath? Just to check due to Necklace of Adaptation.
Swim Check 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (19) - 3 = 16
DC to swim?

Gratus attempts to swim up to the marid.....his movements slow and ponderous, hoping to aid his companions with his own weapon........

The Waking Rune

Moukadeem AoO vs Paicho: 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 28damage: 2d6 + 9 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (3, 3) + 9 + 12 + 1 = 28

Moukadeem sense motive vs Korai: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33

What use is your gun underwater, bird-man? Hahahahaha!

Gratus, I don't need to track your breath. My bad. Swim DC is 10 (calm water).
All, you can walk along the bottom of the flooded chamber if you are sufficiently weighed down: this requires you to be carrying at least 16lbs of gear, 8lbs if you are small.
Korai, your estimation of the 3-D layout is pretty accurate, although Moukadeem mostly has his attention (and his head) below the surface of the water, where he is looking to Paicho.

Moukadeem laughs as he stabs Paicho whilst the bard's guard is down. He renews his attack.

trident vs Paicho: 1d20 + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (15) + 18 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 33damage: 2d6 + 9 + 12 + 1 ⇒ (1, 1) + 9 + 12 + 1 = 24

The mad marid renders Paicho unconscious, the bleeding tengu starts to float up to the surface of the water.

Paicho, you need to make a DC10 CON check or start drowning. You also need to make a stabilisation roll (I have you at -1).

With Paicho disabled, Moukadeem turns his attention to the air elemental, dispatching it with two thrusts of his trident. He then lunges again at Paicho, but fortunately Paicho's armour turns away what would have been a murderous blow.

You are no match for me, mortals! Soon I shall return to the surface, and all shall bow before Moukadeem again, or suffer for their insolence.

Round 6 summary:

Paicho throws a potion vial into his beak, getting stabbed for his trouble. Paicho's limbs adapt to the watery conditions.
Rocky gets Zahra out of danger.
Korai tries to hide from the marid, but it's clear that Moukadeem isn't fooled.
Wembly tries to swim away, but he isn't at home in this environment.
Zephyr strikes the mad marid!
Gratus closes in.
Then Moukadeem dispatches both Paicho and Zephyr with deadly fast thrusts of his trident.
The illusory marid continues to spout irrelevant offers.

Combat round 7

Paicho: -52hp, unconscious, dying, possibly drowning; Needs a stabilisation roll and a CON check vs drowning
Rocky
Wembly - air crystal 2/10
Korai - breath used 0/24

From where Korai is, is it obvious as to whether the doors open into the room or out of the room?

The Waking Rune

Korai notes that there are no double doors in this room; no doors of any kind, in fact. The only way in or out seems to be the passageway with the blue fog. It might not be obvious on the map.

Having no knowledge of what is occurring in the watery room Rocky keeps to his plan and tries to activate his wand of touch of the sea.

Rocky nods and holding his breath he heads back into the room.

Swim speed 30. It would take me a round to grab Paicho and another round to bring him into the mist. And I may not even be able to cure him. Meanwhile Moukadeem is attacking 4 times a turn. Or I can try to take on Moukadeem.

Hmmm.... next round could I attempt a UMD check to force an unconcious Paicho to use the First Aid Gloves on himself?

Korai gives a hand signal to Wembly as he swims down to assist Paicho.

Bluff to send message: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35

Message:
Summon a flanker?

Double move, using Fervor's speed boost, staying out of reach of the Marid. Rocky... I think at this point, punch him until he stops stabbing.

I'd allow the attempt. DC25 to 'activate blindly', in effect.

The Waking Rune

Gratus, you can walk along the bottom and still reach Paicho this turn with one move action. Although he's beginning to drift upwards, he's not out of reach of a character standing on the floor yet.

The Waking Rune

Gratus pm'd to say he would walk up to Paicho and cast, so I'll assume his one healing spell.

Rocky re-enters the flooded chamber, enchanted by a spell by his wand.

Korai gestures to Wembly, and swims up to help his fellow Tengu.

Wembly summons a crocodile, that slaps Moukadeem with his powerful tail.

Gratus trudges forwards, and touches Paicho with a healing spell. cure critical wounds: 4d8 + 9 ⇒ (6, 7, 5, 6) + 9 = 33

Paicho regains consciousness. Since Paicho passed the CON check to avoid drowning, he still has breath.

Moukadeem angrily retorts...

The genie moves forwards, his giant frame at one with the water, and judging Paicho to be no immediate threat he stabs down at Korai twice.

Finally, Moukadeem aims a blow at Paicho, undoing most of Gratus' good work.

You are doomed! You cannot match my power!
