"How Counterspells Work: To use a counterspell, you must select an opponent as the target of the counterspell. You do this by choosing to ready an action. In doing so, you elect to wait to complete your action until your opponent tries to cast a spell. You may still move at your normal speed, since ready is a standard action.

If the target of your counterspell tries to cast a spell, make a Spellcraft check (DC 15 + the spell's level). This check is a free action. If the check succeeds, you correctly identify the opponent's spell and can attempt to counter it. If the check fails, you can't do either of these things.

To complete the action, you must then cast an appropriate spell. As a general rule, a spell can only counter itself. If you are able to cast the same spell and you have it prepared (or have a slot of the appropriate level available), you cast it, creating a counterspell effect. If the target is within range, both spells automatically negate each other with no other results."

Since you have to ready an action to counterspell, and you go after Lambert, he was already well into his spell before you could ready your action.

Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5

Ah, you read the rules as saying I have to counterspell when he begins his spell as opposed to any point during his spell. Well I disagree with you, but I won't question your judgement.

Round 1 Action

Drelsh scowls in fury at the friendly fire. "Think boy!" He ignores the pain in his leg and steps forward, stabbing with this spear.

everyone taking a break or is there something wrong with the forums?

The Exchange

From what I can see everyone has now taken their round 1 action. So it's back to Lambert and you, then the snake, then the rest of us again.

Male Dwarf Cleric (Forgemaster). 2; Init +0; AC 17; hp 21/21; Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +5; Perc +6

Don't know what's happened to Lambert. Maybe we should skip him/ghost him and move on.

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

I second the motion to proxy lambert if he doesn't post by 0800 EST.

Here, here!! lol

I don't mind posting out of order - I will take your action and put it in the right place when it occurs. If previous actions obviate it, I'll give you a chance to reconsider. If you miss your turn by a fair amount of time then its gone. =) So for you who go before the snake...go ahead. I'll post the snake's action in the morning (if it lives!)

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stone Lord) 1; Init +2; AC 18/12/16; Hp 5/12; Fort +4, Ref +2, Will +2; Perc +4

Darn I go after the snake!

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

full round action of charging at the snake as it moves in a direction that wasn't anticipated, and with Ulan dropping out leaving space for the action to happen. Hope the snake attempts an attack of opportunity on me so it releases the girl.

"By Nethis!"Mike shouts as he feels the familiar tingle that magic makes as Ulan drops to the floor and the girl the snake has stops all attempts to free herself. Not sure what spell was just cast and only concerned with ending the threat that is moving in the opposite direction Mike Charges in at the sake dagger raised.

Guess i trip over ulan :(

Sorry guys. Spent all day being heinously ill.

Lambert glowered at the scene before him. That was not how he had expected things to unfold. With no weapon in hand, he decided to hold back for the moment. No use getting himself involved any more than he had to...

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

Don't worry about it Lambert. No hard feelings were meant, and go Ulan, go Ulan, it's your birthday.

Male Dwarf Cleric (Forgemaster). 2; Init +0; AC 17; hp 21/21; Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +5; Perc +6

Zzzzzzzz.
NEXT!

Round 2
Lambert - passes
Ulan - Asleep
Mike - tries to time his attack on the snake and misses badly!
[I]Snake (-22 hp) - grieviously wounded, the snake lets go of its potential meal and moves full speed away from the campsite to escape!

Drelsh - You may make an AoO...
Bryn - You may make an AoO...
===============================================================

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stone Lord) 1; Init +2; AC 18/12/16; Hp 5/12; Fort +4, Ref +2, Will +2; Perc +4

Does Breggel not get a shot??

In my mind's eye you and Aldras are now out of 5' AoO range due to snake's move last round (which didn't invoke an AoO...) You could have moved and attacked but if Drelsh and Bryn both miss then the snake gets up a tree and escapes on its turn =)

Bryn stabs the snake again as it tries to escape, this time putting an end to its life! >Combat over!<

Delora, now awake and bleeding from the bite around her leg, comes limping up to Bryn and throws her arms around his neck. "Oh thank you for saving me from that horrid snake! It was going to eat me, wasn't it?!!"

Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5

Drelsh pokes the snake again through the spine, making sure it's dead. Then he turns to Delora. "Hold still girl."

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stone Lord) 1; Init +2; AC 18/12/16; Hp 5/12; Fort +4, Ref +2, Will +2; Perc +4

Breggel rushes over to his brother and shakes him awake.

"Ulan! Get up the snake is dead! "

He looks over at Lambert and growls, "Next time make sure you know what yer spells can do and where they will land! We would be having a different talk if any harm had come to my brother!"

Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5

Once Delora is healed Drelsh stands, limping his way over to Lambert. He stands next to him for a moment, staring at him. "So. What exactly happened back there?"

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

Mike, not quite sure what happened after his trip over Ulan. Rolling over he watches as breggal prodes his brother and shoutes over at Lambert and after sitting up sees that the snake is indeed dead. "Breggel, you like snake?" Mike asks the dwarf after he is done berating Lambert.

Picking up his dagger Mike stands up eyeing the recent kill wondering what on earth a snake would be doing so active in the cold weather.

Male Dwarf Paladin (Stone Lord) 1; Init +2; AC 18/12/16; Hp 5/12; Fort +4, Ref +2, Will +2; Perc +4

"Well..I would not say no to a bit of BBQ snake, now that you mention it!"

He helps his brother up and dusts him off.

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

"Glad we are on the same page." Mike heads over with the dwarfs and starts gutting and skinning the animal. Handing the meat over to Breggal and ulan as it becomes available. I will be over in a minute. I'm going to take a minute to wash up."hunter/trapper: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

How much meat is this snake going to produce. I'm assuming a lot since its large enough to threatan a human. My character would also collect the skin and skull to attempt to sell at a later time.

Male Dwarf Cleric (Forgemaster). 2; Init +0; AC 17; hp 21/21; Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +5; Perc +6

"Aye aye, thanks brother. I'm fine."
Ulan says as he rises and wipes the dust from his shirt.
He glances at Lambert for a moment, but noticing Drelsh is with him already he simply frowns before helping Mike cook up the snake meat.

Male Human Druid 1 HP: 10/10, - AC: 13/T: 11/FF: 12 – Perception +7 - Initiative: +1 - F:+4 / R:+2/ W:+5 - CMB: +1 - CMD: 12, Speed: 30

Lambert could only glower in response. He was not surprised to encounter this degree of fallout from the fight's aftermath-- he himself knew well enough that he had mucked things up without getting yelled at by half the traveling party. But was he ever going to openly admit it, with such hostile stares and demands for an explanation?

Never.

It was an old defense of his, just to stare back at his accusers sullenly. Eventually the others would lose interest, and thoroughly ignore him. That was what he was hoping for.

Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5

Drelsh stares at him in silence for another moment. "I suggest you start talking boy. This is your chance to explain yourself. Otherwise I'm going to charge you with attacking your comrades and bring you back in chains to await the king's justice. I wouldn't see treason as far fetched. So, right now you have the chance, why exactly did you deem to knock half of your comrades out?"

Bryn untangles himself from Delora saying "forgive me miss but I need to go and check on the animals."He turns the now healed girl over to her fathers care and goes to make sure the horses are okay and properly secured.

The animals are quickly settled by the three handlers. Mike skins the snake and prepares the meat - although since everyone has already eaten, and you just fought the thing, not many are hungry...Mike saves the skin and head for potential future use. Without the means to treat and dry the skin, and to remove the flesh and brains from the skull, you're likely to have a rotting, stinking mass in your backpack by the time you get back to Daggermark. But hey - it might work... =)

Delora refuses to leave Bryn's side. She has recovered a bit and is no longer the helpless little girl, but she won't get too far from him...

Soon it is time to get some sleep, and everyone sets up their bedrolls and drifts off, leaving the watch to keep an eye out for any more critters.

well how does her father feel about that lol

Bryn is embarassed by the girls attention and points out to her that he wasn't the only one fighting the snake. He doesn't object too much to her staying nearby, but is relieved when it is time for everyone to retire for the night and for him to take his turn on watch.

dice roll boosts due to female attention ;) ... You might not have been the only one fighting, but you were doing some serious damage.

When it was his turn for the watch at night's end. Aldras took to the duty, still having the fight with the snake in the back of his head.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19

Although I'm in the last watch, I'm going to roll my perception for my tour of duty already. Don't know when I'll be checking in again and then we can continue if nothing happened in the other watches :)

Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]

Well My character was going to let the skull boil until the meat falls off and hold onto the skull only. The snake skin is going to be laid out to dry after he scrapes as much stuff off the inside of it as possible. Depending on how close to winter it is the skin could freeze a little and should keep well enough unless we are out in the wilderness for another week. Check for my watch below.

perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

After recovering from a deep slumber mike starts to get ready for his shift. He heads over to the always silent Lambert sitting by the fire. Good a place as any for Mike considering he is a little stiff from the cold and could use some thawing. "You doing ok after that little altracation?" He asks while noticing some of the cooked snake still lying around. He starts to heat some of it up for breakfast as he waits for a response.

Male Human Druid 1 HP: 10/10, - AC: 13/T: 11/FF: 12 – Perception +7 - Initiative: +1 - F:+4 / R:+2/ W:+5 - CMB: +1 - CMD: 12, Speed: 30

Drelsh's comment finally broke Lambert's silence. It came as a sardonic bark of laughter, as incredulous as it was derisive. "Treason for a spell that went wild and people ran into? Like to see them try and hang me for that one."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Lambert's watch was spent in his usual dour silence, where he seemed more interested in prodding the fire than he was in actually keeping a serious watch. He raises an eyebrow when Mike rises to join him at the fire. "...Fine," he responded, a bit too sharply.
Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5
Drelsh leans back, seeming satisfied. "So it was simply idiocy on your part. That's all I needed to know." He sharply raps Lambert over the head with his quarterstaff. "Do it again and I'll drag you back, mistake or not."
Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]
Mike laughs repeating Lambert's words and takes a big bite of his breakfast. "My dad said that before setting off from Kyonin to leave me hear in the river kingdoms. Mike sat up stretching his legs and taking a deep breath. He savored the smell of the fire and the crisp air as they danced through his nose. "So why don't you elaborate "fine" for me?"
Male Human Druid 1 HP: 10/10, - AC: 13/T: 11/FF: 12 – Perception +7 - Initiative: +1 - F:+4 / R:+2/ W:+5 - CMB: +1 - CMD: 12, Speed: 30
Lambert finally stopped pretending to be busy with caring for the fire, in which he sat back and finally stared Mike flatly in the eye. "Why." It was more of a statement than a question, and delivered in his usual ever-so-charming manner.
Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]
"No reason, i'm not going to force words from your mouth like Drelsh did. You just have something on your mind and I thought you would of wanted to talk about it."
Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5
Man, hit him on the head and I got nothing? That is a stern position.
Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]
Think thats twice you hit him now. He seems to only responds to verbal threats with any kind of passion. Makes sense from his backstory and got to give him props for sticking to it like he has.
Male Tiefling Magus/Rogue 5
Well it's one thing to rap him on the leg to get him to stand up strait, this was me directly addressing him and then hitting him on the head. Guess I just expect most people react to some degree to violence lol
Male Human Druid 1 HP: 10/10, - AC: 13/T: 11/FF: 12 – Perception +7 - Initiative: +1 - F:+4 / R:+2/ W:+5 - CMB: +1 - CMD: 12, Speed: 30
What can I say? He's got a head like a rock.
"Mm," came the response. It wasn't much of a reply, but it was less sharp than his previous brief instances of communication. He didn't linger for much longer by the fire after that. One had to get what sleep they could, after all.
Male Half-Elf Wizard (Illusionist) 1/Fighter (Archer) 1 [ HP: 20/20 | AC: 13 T: 10 FF: 13 | W: +3 : R+0: F+4| Init: +0 Perc: +6 Low light Vision | Effects: none]
Mike just shook his head as Lambert walked away not beleiving that there was someone who hated the malitia more then he does. Saying a quick good night to Breggal Mike goes to wake up the others on the 3rd watch. Maybe this will be the last day on the road and he can get back to Two Creek.
Male Dwarf Cleric (Forgemaster). 2; Init +0; AC 17; hp 21/21; Fort +6, Ref +0, Will +5; Perc +6
Ulan stays alert, his warhammer at the ready, during the first watch.
"Don't forget, we're on duty lad."
He says, grinning, to Bryn during their watch. He subtly indicates Delora.
"Try not to get too distracted."
He continues his patrol of the campsite.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
An hour or so before dawn, when Mike, Drelsh, and Aldras are on watch, Aldras hears something unusual in the darkness, and alerts his companions of the noise. Mike looks out, but was unfortunately staring into the fire and thinking of home so his night-vision is not as keen as it could be...as they come to their feet, a hideous avian creature with the body of an emaciated rooster, the wings of a bat, and a long, scaly tail rushes out of the darkness at Drelsh!
