The Glen - Goblin Encampment - Round 4

Goblin Encampment Battle Map

Rabalar, seeing that the young cook is wounded, quickly pulls and fires and arrow. Seeing a clear shot with no obstacles he lets the arrow fly and it finds its mark. D'ogyrn dashes to the left and back right trying to avoid the goblin then as he blinks he sees an arrow protruding from just below the goblin's jawline sticking out both sides. The goblin simply goes limp and drops like a bag of potatoes.

As the goblin drops D'ogryn turns to see Rabalar fall in place along his right side near the cliff edge. He already has an other arrow knocked as he looks towards the pool and the sound of battle.

I moved Rabalar, let me know if that is acceptable.

You have several options...treeshape being one of them. You can either use it offensively, defensively, or as assistance to get you up the ledge.

Naia yells in pain as she is shot, then grins a feral smile as she sees the goblins think they are clever to catch her and her companions.

"Thanking you for the aid you little vermin!" she yells at the leering creatures.

Naia wades back to the wooden barricade, and begins to climb it. "Stay safe, and thanks for the shield!" she yells to Soros, hoping Zove and Okware will be safe too...

Ah, alright. I was thinking treeshape was touch like stoneshape and that there were no trees down here, only smaller plants. I thought the only trees were up top.

Zove approaches the trunk of a young river birch and flattens her palm on the surface, bending and twisting its form into a ladder and vowing to come back and restore it later. She then starts the climb up towards her foes...

There are vines running all along the walls and those vines touch many of the trees above. You can use the vines and smaller trees (treeshape is really for any plant life in my opinion). So there might not be many large trees but there are plenty of vines and smaller trees. If that makes sense.

You are right. Round 4 - group 3. Sorry got done with Rabalar and jumped the gun..thanks for correcting me!

Cool, lets see then...11 cubic feet could be a roughly rectangular volume 3 inches (0.25 ft) thick by 2 ft wide by 22 ft long (.25*2*22=11). Sounds about right for a ladder...something like this

Zove curls and twists the vines into secure loops at regular intervals stretching up the cliffside, giving her a rapid way up.

edit: And yeah, I know theres a rope back there but it would probably take a few rounds to get back to it...seems to have been a mistake not to all go up in the first place

Quick correction. I thought I added it and forgot to note it. Okware has lost a total of 2 hp's. -1 for arrow, -1 for poison damage. This is on top of the -1 con damage. See house rules page 50 for details (DC-10 and divided by 2 for poison damage). So DC12 = 1hp of posion damage. He is at -2 and is not grazed has he has not hit 3/4 of his hit points (13 or less). Poison damage occurs on any poison whether you save or not. This doesn't apply to lethal poison.

Got it. Great use of the ability. I am guessing you touch about three feet up so that will get you 25 feet up. THere is still 15 feet of distance (40 feet up for the ledge) or if you put it near the lower ledge that will run beyond the 15 foot lower ledge allowing you to put yourself between Okware (just a few feet below the 15 feet ledge) and the goblin leader who is up on the 40 foot ledge.

This encounter was intentional and I was hoping that the party jumped on it prior to the house. It allows you guys a chance to work together and for me to put you through the motions of how I run combat. This was a dangerous encounter...especially if the entire party choose to go through the narrow. Give it a moment and you will see why. I want to make sure the entire party could see how combat was going to be ran throughout the campaign. I try to run each encounter using all the strengths and weakness of the NPC's. So good, bad, indifferent I use them all...goblins are crazy and hard to organize so I use that as a weakness in organized combat. However, they are cunning and sneaky and the use of ambushes and traps are something they are good at. I also wanted you to get feel for the modification of the rules so if there was any questions we could get them sorted out prior to the house. Things will move a lot faster in the house and I figured I owed it to the group to make sure we all played on a level field. I was relieved to see the party (a portion anyway) go up the side. It would have been really bad if all seven of you justed went through the narrow. I counted on at least a portion coming out...I have been randomly having the goblins react to the party's movements to create some chaos on their side. Basically the goblin leader is probably at this point ready to take a zanex and call it day... :)

The Glen - Goblin Encampment - Round 4
Goblin Encampment Battle Map

Zove moves to the side of the glen and puts her hand on a nest of vines that creep up the wall. A faint glow of green and white light makes its way up the vines and they begin to mold and move under her control. Naia and Soros can see the vines form into a sort of hooped rope ladder that goes up the wall just a few feet from the lower ledge and it continues to form another ten feet higher. She turns and smiles and then quickly looks at Okware knowing he will not last much longer if the goblin chooses to finish him.

Naia turns makes her way back to the barricade. As she finishes her statement to Soros and begins her climb she hers a wooden click and a scrape of wood. The barricade jerks to the fall's and then lurches forwad as a set of vines on each side of the falls breakaway from the walls and jet upwards. Out of the water comes a pile of rocks in a vined net leaking water out of the sides as they shoot up the wall. The group int the pool hear crack on both sides and see two horizontal logs, one on each side breakaway from the top of the ledge. They are tied to vines which are hung on limbs over the glen on over hanging trees. Both logs come away and propel downward towards Naia. The logs are ten feet long and the branches cut away to make sharpened points. Naia realizes she fell for their trap...the very thing Rabalar warned the party about. Naia looks up as she begins to climb up and then tries to dive off but she simply didn't get away in time. The logs come screaming down and clap together in a loud "CRACK" and Naia is stuck in the middle. She manages to get her harpoon up on one side to buffer the blow of that log but the other log smacks cleanly into her. She is jolted off the barricade and pinned between the two logs and the barricade is destroyed as the logs went through the stakes! (take 1 round to free herself - same as PARALYZED except she can call out/move her arms).

Naia Reflex Save against DC18 - Stake Barricade/Smashing Log Trap: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The goblin in front of Edan sees the Olf fire his bow and out of the corner of his eye he sees his comrade fall. In a split second, he decided to turn tail and run.

The goblin takes a full move action and runs off to the west. Edan can take an AoO. If the goblin makes it he will move 60 feet to the west this round.

The two goblins on the east ledge see the trap go off and smash into Naia. As soon as they see that it hurt the women they begin to giggle and laugh uncontrollably.

goblin 1 will save DC13: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
goblin 2 will save DC13: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

The first goblin on the top ledge laughs so hard he stumbles. The other goblin seems to get control of himself as he looks over at his leader who is watching his beautiful trap do its deadly work while his band of fools make little use of their advantage.

goblin 1 reflex save DC15: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

Both goblins, distracted by the success of the logs smashing into Naia seem to forget to finish the job off and press their attack. The goblin leader screams something in goblin that could only be cursing and they both seem to refocus their attention on the party.

Soros was right by the trap that was sprung and a few more inches closer to Naia he would have been crushed as well. As he quickly looks around he sees two goblins on the west ledge and two goblins on the east ledge and what he believes to be the leader on the east ledge further back. Zove is about to climb the wall near the leader and Okware is now down for the count. Hard to tell if he is dead or just out but the battle in the pool is going badly now that Naia is down. Hopefully the battle in the woods is fairing better...he quickly prays to Boccob thinking it can't hurt at this point.

The two goblins on the eastern ledge seem to regain their composure and as the leader directs to them by pointing at Soros below they both fire trying to hit the wizard before he casts his foul magic on them. One arrow flies wide of Soros and punches into the log that has Naia pinned. The other arrow smacks into his magical shield and shatters into pieces of wood and sparks. Both the goblins curse and shout at the wizard!

Moving back to the ledge, D'ogryn looks at the situation. He did not feel to good what with all his blood flowing freely from his wound. The trap was a nice touch but not impossible to get out of if they were smart about it. He decided to lend a hand or two to give them the time needed to get out alive.

Still clinging by both his front paws.

[b]D'ogryn's surprise on the goblin scout on the west ledge.[b/]

The goblin turns surprised by not only the appearance of the human but how quickly he fell upon him. As he turns and dodges the assault, his back foot slips and he plummets into the water below. First breaking his back on the next ledge down as he does. His body seems to squirm and convulse for a few moments and then goes still. D'ogyrn looks surprised at first and then relieved.

REFLEX DC12 to not fall of ledge: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

seems like goblin's falling off the ledge is keeping you guys in this. The ledges are precarious at best as they are slick so being right up on the ledge is dangerous. Fall damage is 2d4+2 due to the chance of hitting the sides on the way down and the water is shallow and full of rocks, sticks, and such.

Round 5
Granting all allies within 10 feet a +1 deflection bonus to AC

Soros knits his brow in anger and looks to the goblins in the east. Not wanting to deprive Naia of his protection should the goblins decide to try and finish her off, he holds his ground. Resorting to mundane methods may cause these goblins to fear me less; however, our situation grows critical. Best strike at their head.

The wizard pulls the sling hanging from his belt, loading it with a bullet which he sends zipping at the goblin who appears to be giving the orders.

Ranged attack, sling: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 - 2 = 19

Soros lets fly the bullet from his sling and it hits the goblin squarely in the side of the face leaving a long streak of blood across the goblin's cheek. It looks back at the wizard in anger but realizes with his numbers disappearing he is now a clean target for the remaining band of hunters. Suddenly an arrow flies by him nearly hitting him as well. The look of anger vanishes and the sudden look of panic crosses his face now that the olf appeared on the far ridge.

He pulls an arrow from his quiver off his side and fires an arrow at the wizard below. He makes a call in goblin and turns, puts his bow on his back and shifts five feet to get to a vine going up ten feet to the forest. His intentions are clear and the goblins around him seem to react quickly to his call. His arrow flies wide and cracks into the side of the west wall. Not even getting close to the wizard defending Naia!

He looks around and sees three goblin bodies floating in the pool and none of these humans and olfs are dead yet. He turns and begins to climb up the ledge to the 40 foot ledge. The goblin gets about ten feet up the wall using the climbing vines they have on the side of the natural wall.

Awaiting Edan for group 2

With no enemies that could be reached without some effort, Edan approached Rabalar, but could not quite reach him. The injuries he had sustained were not too serious, and there was only one goblin left that he could see. "There is only one remaining up here?", he asked. It appeared that the cook— D'ogryn was certainly competent.

Zove scrambles to the ledge and moves quickly to Okware as the goblin leader scrambles up the wall. Zove struggled a bit to get up the short distance. More concerned for her companion than getting up the wall she slipped several times even with the rungs in place. Okware is limp but he appears to be breathing. The arrow only scratched him but the cut seems to swollen for a fresh cut. "It must be poison of some type!".

Zove gets to Okware and he is about three feet down.

Naia attempts to push the logs away and work her way to the end of the logs near Soros.

About time a good number came my way...lol

Seeing his blade hit the goblin below, D'ogryn spits a wad of spit mixed with his own blood down at the goblin.
Choke on that you....
He coughs up some of his own blood from the effort to throw the dagger.

Goblin Encampment Battle Map

The one goblin on the eastern ledge turns and runs off to the east. He doesn't even wait for the leader of his group or his partner ten feet below him on the lower ledge. Meanwhile, the goblin on the lower ledge is fixed on the young wizard and the wounded warrior women. He grabs an arrow looks at it and giggles, seeing the bulb on the back of the arrowhead, then fires it at the young wizard!

goblin shortbow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2
critical: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

Just as he goes to release the arrow D'ogryn's dagger slams into his neck and he tries to scream but only a gurgle seems to come out and then plummets into the water below! The arrow flies by Soros and into the wall to the other side and bursts into shards of wood and a yellow/green cloud in the water and seems to disperse just as quickly.

Round 6
Granting all allies within 10 feet a +1 deflection bonus to AC

Given the success of his first sling stone, Soros decides to attempt a second. I suspect the more goblins we put an end to here and now the less likely the survivors are to return. Once his stone is in the air, he looks to Naia.

"Stay behind me," he suggests.

Attack, sling: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 3 - 2 = 8 targeting goblin above Zove.
-2 range penalty (approx 60 feet)
Damage, sling: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Standard: attack with sling; Move: none; Swift: none; Free: speaking.

Adjusting his position a little closer to the edge, and a little closer to the goblin that was shouting orders, the olf pulls another arrow, nocks, draws, and takes a second to aim before releasing the string.

As the arrow flies he yells out in goblin.

Goblin:
"Yes, run into the forest. Hunting in the forest is what I do best. Run, my prey. Run!"

The one I think was the leader is 50' away in a "straight line" on the map. (The goblin just S of Zove.) Depression was 35' before he started climbing, so it should be 25' now, right? That's 3x5' and 2x10' for another 35', or 85' distance. I must be calculating it wrong somehow, because that's far too much reduction for the little movement the two have made, but I think I'm erring by making the distance too much, so . . ..

Bow Attack w/ Bullseye Shot, Favored Enemy, Damage: 1d20 + 6 + 4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 4 + 2 - 1 = 26
Bow Damage w/ Favored Enemy: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
Confirm if needed: 1d20 + 6 + 4 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (4) + 6 + 4 + 2 - 1 = 15

5' step. Bullseye Shot for Move. Standard for attack

High school (Jr High?) math, right? Pythagoras. 35' squared + 50' squared = distance squared. 61', roughly.

Okay, something extra moved. I know I moved my icon one 5' step, but the distance between the two icons dropped from 65' to 50'? The text had him climbing up 10'?

Soros lets his sling fly and the bullet flies towards the goblin and "clacks!" off the natural wall not three feet to his left. The goblin hears it and turns to look back at the young wizard. Anger lines his face but then he looks up to the west ledge as Rabalar shouts to him in goblin. The goblin seems to start shouting something back and suddenly the arrow slams into his mouth and sticks into a young birch sapling. The goblin's eyes look down at the arrow just as his body goes limp and the sharp snap of the shaft as it bends and then breaks and his lifeless body plummets past Zove and into the water below!

critical damage roll: 1d8 ⇒ 8

Waiting for Edan's move. That completes group 2.

With no enemies immediately threatening them on their side of the river, Edan let out a long sigh as he stepped closer to the edge to see what as going on. D'ogryn, and Rabalar were not severely hurt, so that let him pay attention to the others, looking across the river. "They have survived— but it was a close thing."

D'ogryn turns towards Edan and winces in pain.
To close for my comfort. Another inch higher and I would be visiting Dolt's great locked gate.
An arrow was sticking out of his chest just below his lung and heart. Blood flowing free down his leather shirt. The armor would need to be removed before that arrow could be pulled out.
