Pems checks the trap for a reset, trying to disable it if possible. Pems looks unaffected by the cold.

RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16, RPG Superstar 2012 Top 16

The trap does seem to be have reset after a handful of seconds, but Pems -- being immune to the cold -- is easily able to tinker with it once he has the others back up and can eventually disable it.

Once everyone returns, he opens the door to find a wide cavern opens away from the entryway, lit by a diffuse glowing cloud that continually hovers near the ceiling. Arranged in a semicircle around the entrance are fourteen identical stone thrones, their high backs each bearing the same dancing hut sigil and a small plaque beneath. Seated upon twelve of the thrones are corpses dressed in royal regalia in various stages of decomposition. Like the corridor outside, a thin layer of frost covers everything in this room, including the thrones and their occupants.

When you enter, you hear a disturbing giggle from the matryoshka doll, which then says in the Old Crone's voice: "“There they are; twelve queens all in a row. Such beautiful, loyal daughters... they each ruled a hundred years and then gave me their lives so I could live on. The life of Baba Yaga sits before you; all you need to do is take each of their hearts and steep them to make a fine witch’s brew.” She giggles again and goes silent.

All 12 of the enthroned queens writhe and twitch but at the chilling words of the doll, the last four leap from their thrones and move to attack.

Initiative:

Hektir (+2 in surprise rounds): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Malavarius: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Pemsworth: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23

Tsin: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Antagonist: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20

Tsin, Pems and Quinn are up. Only the queens with colored borders (toward the top of the map) have leapt up. The others twitch but remain seated. Don't forget the map is 20-ft. squares.

Quinn calls upon Cayden and a cloak of swirling lights surrounds each party member.

cast Cloak of Chaos, at least a +4 to AC and +4 to saves for each party member

Cloak of Chaos:

A random pattern of color surrounds the subjects, protecting them from attacks, granting them resistance to spells cast by lawful creatures, and causing lawful creatures that strike the subjects to become confused. This abjuration has four effects.

First, each warded creature gains a +4 deflection bonus to AC and a +4 resistance bonus on saves. Unlike protection from law, the benefit of this spell applies against all attacks, not just against attacks by lawful creatures.

Second, each warded creature gains spell resistance 25 against lawful spells and spells cast by lawful creatures.

Third, the abjuration protects from possession and mental influence, just as protection from law does.

Finally, if a lawful creature succeeds on a melee attack against a warded creature, the offending attacker is confused for 1 round (Will save negates, as with the confusion spell, but against the save DC of cloak of chaos).

Note that these creatures aren't lawful, so I don't think you get that much benefit from Quinn's spell, though it should help with any mental possession effects.

Round 1/2:

Hektir: 17*
Malavarius: 10*
Tsin: 25
Pemsworth: 23
Quinn: 22
Antagonist: 20

Tsin lowers her own magic protection before calling on her own goddess and taking on Quinn's protections. Pems moves away from the group as much as he can before calling rubbery tentacles up to grab the queens.

Unfortunately, the tentacles seem to flinch away from the cold, bony flesh, leaving the queens unhampered as they advance. The northernmost two gesture toward Tsin, who feels ill luck fall over her before ice suddenly seems to coalesce around her limbs. The other two do the same to Hektir. [ooc]Both must make DC 24 Will save or must roll twice and take the worse result for any ability check, attack roll, saving throw, or skill check for the next three rounds; Tsin then takes 15 hp cold damage, Hektir takes 7; DC 24 Fort for half; if you fail, you are paralyzed and unconscious as you're trapped in an icy tomb (but you don't need to eat or breath...)

No religion for Pems, I'm afraid!

Pems shrugs at the undead queens, not knowing what makes the undead tick. He frets over his magics, finally choosing to throw a wall of ice down over Green and Red, cutting them off.

I would like to use the 17' hemisphere option to wall off Green and Red to block line of sight and give our Melee types time to whack away the other two WitchQueens.

Two of the queens let out a cry of pain as Hektir's spell hits them, the center two blinking furiously as they try to regain their sight. Mal and Pems also bring their magics to bear, the former halfling trapping two of the queens in a dome of ice.

Quinn's magic, unfortunately, has no effect, the unnatural coldness of the creatures seemingly more than the fire could deal with or their spell resistance, to be less colorful.

Tsin closes on the remaining free sighted queen switched her target to pink, cutting deep. She attacks back, her ice staff jabbing and hitting at the swordswoman's guard. She can't find off the swirling staff completely, and one blow hits her ribs. The pain isn't that much, but the cold is almost life-sapping. 13 hp, plus 2 cold damage, plus make a DC 25 Fort save or get two negative levels

Tsin fixes her eyes on this crone, and pictures what she must have looked like, all those years ago. For what Baba Yaga has done to her, isolated her in this throne room, allowed her to wither to undeath, Tsin finds herself wondering how horrible the association must have been with the imprisoned witch...

You manage to rain -- or is it reign -- death on the crones in quick manner, their efforts badly hampered by your first two spells. With two of them cut off, Tsin and Hektir quickly gang up on the sighted one and then take down the second before dealing similarly with the two trapped in the ice dome.

And despite your fears, the other queens seem unable to get up from their thrones, apparently too old or frozen to take up the fight themselves.

Baba Yaga issues quick instructions that are as cold as the room itself -- remove the heart of each of the queens present. Once you're finished, she instructs, place them in the brass samovar upon the table, beside a silver platter containing a complete silver tea service for eight.

Tsin does as instructed, butchering the four crones for their innards. When she’s finished with Baba Yaga’s instructions, she approaches each of the remaining crone queens, and destroys them where they sit.

Malavarius harumphs as the last of the ambulatory crones collapses, then turns to Pemsworth with a proud nod. "Brilliant thinking, my boy. Cutting those two off with the very stuff they kept Irrisen trapped behind. Well done, Pemsworth. Well done, indeed."

As Tsin busies herself with Baba Yaga's grim instructions, Malavarius sweeps his eyes around the room, looking for anything that might prove to be of use against Elvanna.

Apetir watches as Tsin expertly butchers what needs to be butchered. It's clear that she is much more of the butcher than she was when she started this entire adventure. Apetir would never want to be on the receiving end of her blade...or on her butcher's block.

He ponders if the final deaths of these 12 witches is enough to quell his witchdeathlust. And it might be.

12 dead witches. That is good. They stole my summer.

The eight remaining crone queens are unable to stop Tsin, though some weakly raise their arms or move their heads to glare at her as she works. As soon as she places the 12 hearts of the crone queens in the teapot atop the samovar, you suddenly find yourselves back in the grove with the pool and tree.

Baba Yaga's now familiar voice instructs you to fill the samovar with water from the sacred pool, heat it to boiling and steep the hearts in the water, then pour the brew over the matryoshka doll. Doing so causes the doll to crack open once again, revealing the last doll inside.

"It's about time!" the doll snaps. "I thought you were eager to deal with this problem, but ice in Irrisen moves faster than you do! So much time drinking and leaving your clothes behind, instead of getting down to business!"

That said, despite her words, you can feel her power wash through you, making you stronger, faster, healthier. You each gain a permanent +2 inherent bonus to one ability score of your choice (including mental if you want, despite only physical abilities being mentioned in the previous sentence).

Once Baba Yaga falls silent, Vigliv appears again from the trunk of her tree.

“The fate, the power, the death, and the life of Baba Yaga, all have you claimed. Only one thing remains for you to break her free from her prison and save your world: her blood, which flows through the veins of the ruling queen of Irrisen, her daughter Elvanna. Elvanna’s blood is her birthright, handed down from her mother, and represents both Baba Yaga’s and Elvanna’s burning desire to rule their fates and those of others. It is only with Elvanna’s blood, returned to her mother, that you can save your world from the eternal winter that threatens it.

“Even now, Elvanna has sequestered herself in Baba Yaga’s inner sanctum, here in the Dancing Hut, where Baba Yaga formulated her most potent spells and executed her most glorious triumphs, and where Elvanna now works her greatest ritual to cement her power, conquer your world, and supplant her own mother as Queen of Witches.

“Now you must go to this sanctum and face Queen Elvanna before she can finish her ritual. But beware, for time is running short, and Elvanna is truly her mother’s daughter. Her will to power is as strong as the blood in her veins, and she will not give up her desires easily. Heed the guidance of Baba Yaga, however, and you may yet win the day, freeing her and saving your world.”

Apetir gets wiser, I believe. Will confirm at home, but yeah, likely.

Motte, is there an image that accompanies this version of Yucky Baby? Is this the doll talking or is she back to humanish?

Apetir reverts back to the manly Hektir so that he might properly reflect upon the witch’s words.

”So...you’re saying the damned daughter b#&&@ Elvanna has been in the damn Hut the entire time?” Hektir offers with a spit. ”Should have told us that a while back, might have made this much easier.”

Hektir spits again, thinking deeply upon all this.

"Easier? You couldn't have gotten to her then," the doll waspishly snaps back. "And more importantly, you weren't ready. She'd have just killed you, and all the work I've put into getting free and making sure you would stay alive would have been for nothing!"

Tsin can feel her cheeks being pulled past the guard of her teeth, as she sucks her mouth closed to avoid answering the Bite of Baba Yaga with her own, albeit more impotent, words. When mention of her clothes being shed comes forward, she inadvertently bites the inside of her cheek. The taste of blood distracts her enough to abstain from rebutting the small little doll.

For this, Tsin wants an answer. "Fair enough. You will need to humor us a little while longer. Elvanna is our last target. After this, I hope you will agree that we have fulfilled the oath secured by your Black Rider, so long ago." Tsin looks over Vigliv, before returning her attention on the smallest doll.

"Vigliv seems quite knowledgeable of both your power, and Elvanna's. Can we at least glean what we are to face from you, or must we ask this kind ancient soul, instead? Elvanna waits somewhere in our near future. Is she the only one standing in our way, or are there other obstacles, other guardians that will not heed the word of Baba Yaga when we announce ourselves? She shifts her glare from Tsin to Hektir and Quinn momentarily.

"We must travel to my horrible daughter -- my magic prevent just arriving there -- and there may certainly be more challenges that await you on the Endless Steppe. Tsin's eyes enlarge with the realization that the true Crone can see her facial expressions, not just her voice. She looks towards the smallest doll, and watches it intently for signs of movement, either in its entire mass, or merely the movement of its eyes. It reminds her of the doll they encountered long ago, in that little hut in the clearing...

"I do appreciate your confidence, Baba Yaga, but is there nothing we may understand of the agents you put in place to stand between us and this Steppe? We will make our final preparations, contingent on whatever intelligence you lend us. I am trying to remove the cobwebs from my sight, so that the way forward is as clear as it can be."

Tsin turns to Malavarius. "Are we still so deep in the Hut that we cannot call forward Zilvaraat? It has been a constant thorn in my side, that I can be frustrated by something grabbing me, and preventing me from swinging Sever as I please. I seek a permanent magic to overcome this danger, and would have it before we seek out Elvanna and her minions."
