Yumiko crouches down amongst the underbrush and tries to line up a shot at the leech, but she waits to see what her companions do before firing. Her sister grasps her longspear and prepares herself to attack anything that might draw near to threaten her sister.

Xargin nocks an arrow to his bow and lets an arrow fly at the oversized leech, but the shot is wide, and the arrow splashes harmlessly into the water.

Marc grasps his Lucerne hammer in both hands and strides to the water’s edge, waiting to attack the giant bloodsucker if it comes within reach.

Grendel flings a stone from his sling at the leech – it is a good shot, but the surface tension of the water breaks the momentum of the stone, and it sinks down harmlessly beside the leech. A moment after Grendel lets fly there is a deep, loud ~boom~ as Yumiko fires her blunderbuss. Birds fly up in fear from the surrounding trees, ears are left ringing, and a small cloud of smoke surrounds Yumiko – but the shot misses the leech.

Here is a map.

The blue is water (swimming required), the green is vegetation (difficult terrain - half movement - that provides cover), the brown is deep mud (difficult terrain - half movement), the grey are rocks (it takes a DC 5 acrobatics check to jump between rocks, or rock to shore, DC 10 if you can't get a running start, -4 to checks if you have your movement reduced below 30), the white squares are relatively free of obstruction.

Jasminder and Tannithil are up.

Male Musetouched (Azata-blooded Aasimar) Bard 1

In readiness for the next round

Xargin readies another shot, but holds his fire, waiting til the leech is out of cover so he has a clear shot.

Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d6 ⇒ 4

Wow... just wow... Xargin's clearly not a combat bard

Female Vishkanya Nightmare Draconic Bloodrager 1

Jasminder scowls as the log gives way and she falls into the water, but graciously accepts help getting out, and the offer of getting herself clean.

She follows the others down the trail, alert after the footprints for signs of being followed.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Too busy looking behind, she does not notice the thing in the water until it is pointed out to her by Grendel. Sighing at the prospect of once more needing to get wet, she waits for the others to let loose their ranged weapons before she starts forward to engage the creature.

She would probably start at K6
Move Action: Move and jump across the rocks to K11
Acrobatics Check: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Standard Action: Attack the Leech
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 141d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 41d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Jasminder waits to see if Tannithil will fire his bow, then leaps gracefully across to the first rock and reaches down to try to slash at the leech under the surface of the water with her sharp claws - one claw comes within scant inches, but just misses.

Tannithil is up.

By the way, this thing is so hard to hit as being under the suface is providing it with cover ...

Male Musetouched (Azata-blooded Aasimar) Bard 1

Yup, that's what I figured, hence why Xargin is going to hold his next action for a clear shot when it emerges... though based on that roll, he still ain't gonna hit it :P

Yeah ... I'm afraid not.

Tannithil aims carefully, his shot designed more to drive the leech onto the bank where Marc is standing in a better attempt to engage it in melee before letting loose a single arrow;

Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

He then notches another arrow and moves to N8.

Tannithil’s arrow is deflected by the surface of the water, and barely misses.

Gizmoh, to speed things up, you can roll for damage at the same time you roll to hit – it can speed things along if you do hit.

The leech rears up out of the murky water beside Jasminder, its circular maw opening to reveal a spiral of teeth. It lunges towards the vishkanya woman.

bite attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2 If it hits, it also attaches (automatically grapples), and drains blood, dealing 1 point of Strength damage and point of Constitution damage.

Round two!

The leech is no longer under water (at the moment), so it doesn’t have concealment or improved cover. However, it is in melee, so a -4 penalty for firing into melee will apply to anyone using ranged attacks without Precise Shot or similar. Also, Jasminder herself may provide the leech with cover depending on the angle of attack.

Male Musetouched (Azata-blooded Aasimar) Bard 1

since I already announced my action... Jasminder I apologise in advance for the fact that Xargin is likely to shoot you by accident

Female Tiefling (oni/tian-min) Wizard (spellslinger) 1 (HP 7/7 AC:15 T:13 F:12 Sves F:+1 R:+3 W:+2 CMB:-1 CMD:12 Init:+3 Perc: +5) ; Itchy (-2 Dex, -2 Cha)

Speaking of shooting people by accident...

Yumiko hurriedly reloads her weapon, tearing the paper cartridge with her teeth and tasting bitter saltpetre. "Quit thy wrigglity, thy sponge-head! Hold real stillsome!. She squints over the sights of the musket, holds her breath against the sharp CRACK of the discharge and the stinging gunsmoke which shrouds the battlefield.

Moth, can you adjust for cover/firing into melee?
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 131d10 ⇒ 5

(next round if required)
Ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 211d10 ⇒ 10

Female Vishkanya Nightmare Draconic Bloodrager 1

The giant leech launches itself out of the water and bounces off Jasminder's armour. Growling at the creature, her eyes narrow and she renews her assault on the abberant monstrosity, claws slashing at the beast, and anger now marring her usually serene features.

Free Action: Enter Bloodrage
Full Attack Action - Claws: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 61d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

I just realised that I muffed it last round. I should have only gotten to attack with one Claw, not both as a Standard Action.

Yumiko fires her noisy weapon again, but it is near impossible shot to hit the leech past Marc and Jasminder … and she’s not quite prepared to risk hitting them. Thus, the shot is wide.

We’ve got Yumiko, Xargin and Jasminder for this round, others may post at will.

Male Halfling Rogue (Scout)/1

Grendel lets fly with another stone, but curses as it fly's wide.

1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 3 - 4 = 4
1d3 ⇒ 3

Female Aasimar (musetouched/tian-min) Oracle (life) 1

Haelynn will move forward to attack the giant leech with her reach weapon, on her turn.

Haelynn Kita wrote:

Her turn is now. Let me know where she moves to and make any rolls required (eg, attack and damage).

Marc looks for a way to get at the leech as it rears out of the water and attacks Jasminder.

How deep is the water at the stream edge Moth? Is shallow enough to stand, Marc will 5-ft step to L10 and thrust out with the spike on top of his Lucerne hammer

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 61d12 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Female Aasimar (musetouched/tian-min) Oracle (life) 1

Fearing for Jasminder, Haelynn moves beside Marc and attacks the giant leech with her longspear.

Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Female Aasimar (musetouched/tian-min) Oracle (life) 1

Well that reinforces the fact Haelynn is not much help in combat! :)

Haelynn Kita wrote:

Ha - nor Marc by the look of things. If I only I could swap my attack roll for the damage roll!

If I've taken to many full round actions here to prevent attacking, all good! Based on my position on the map it's probable I'll be slowed by the mud as well in reaching the leech.

Tannithil returns his notched arrow to his quiver and advances upon the beast as it's vile form assails Jasminder.

Drawing his katana in a smooth action he attacks;
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Map updated.

Apologies for the delay folks …

Haelynn steps forward into the deep mud by the river’s edge to try to thrust at the leech with her longspear – however, not only does she stab the weapon awkwardly into the mud, she has far over-estimated the reach of her spear.

Xargin strings an arrow to his bow and holds his position, waiting for a clear shot – but even with the leech above the surface of the water, he finds it difficult to find a clear shot past Haelynn, Marc and Jasminder. His arm begins to shake as he tries to hold his bow steady in anticipation of a shot.

Marc, you can’t ‘5 foot step’ into difficult terrain, although you are able to move five feet (if you see the distinction. The water by the bank is about chest deep, any further in you will need to swim.

Marc steps forward into the murky water and plunges in surprisingly deep, up to his chest. His clothing and gear are soaked and he can feel mud inside his boots. He thrusts his Lucerne hammer awkwardly at the leech, but his footing is poor and his weapon does not connect.

Grendel lets fly with another stone, but curses as it flies wide.

Jasminder slashes at the leech with her clawed hands. She manages to score a hit, her claws slashing deeply into the leech’s soft, bloated flesh. It writhes in pain.

Tannithil, I don’t think you’ll be able to reach the leech from here. It is the ‘L’ on the map – if you’d like to re-think your action or use your rolled attack for a bow attack instead, let me know.

Female Aasimar (musetouched/tian-min) Oracle (life) 1

Sorry, I was thinking Haelynn would have moved to L10. Probably means the leech was still out of reach and she could not attack.

DM Mothman wrote:

Woops - yep, my bad!

Tannithil fires another arrow from his short bow;

Shortbow Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Tannithil’s arrow just misses the leech.

The leech lunges forward again at Jasminder, determined to get a meal.

Bite Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1. If it hits, the leech attaches, automatically grappling, and drains blood for 1 Strength damage and 1 Constitution damage.

Round 3 … but as Yumiko has already posted an action and attack roll and is up first …

As the leech rears up again to bite at Jasminder, Yumiko lines up another shot and fires. Jasminder feels a rush of wind against her leg as the cartridge misses her by a fraction of an inch. It smashes into the leech’s tooth filled maw and explodes out the back of the vermin’s head in an explosion of black flesh and red gore. The leech thrashes violently, but seems to be too stupid to realise it should be dead …

It’s still alive, others may post at will; Haelynn and Xargin are next.

Haelynn Kita wrote:

Yeah, wasn't quite sure where you wanted to end up, but you couldn't reach L10 with move 20 through difficult terrain I don't think. Though you can move there this round if you want.

Female Aasimar (musetouched/tian-min) Oracle (life) 1

Okay. Haelynn will move forward until she can attack the leech with reach.

"Good shot Yumiko!" Marc exclaims, before steadying himself in the muddy water and lunging in for another attack.

Lucerne Hammer Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 101d12 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Male Halfling Rogue (Scout)/1

Grendel lets fly with another stone

attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Haelynn Kita wrote:

If you want to step into the water at L10 you can attack with reach - roll if that's your preferred action!

Female Vishkanya Nightmare Draconic Bloodrager 1

Laughing as the creature misses her and then has half it's head blown away by Yumiko, Jasminder slashes at the floundering leech once more.

Full Attack Action - Claws: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 161d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 41d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Marc and Grendel both miss their attacks on the leech, but Jasminder, laughing, makes mincemeat of the creature with her claws. Broken and dying, it sinks back down beneath the surface of the water, where it will trouble no one anymore.

End of combat. Each character gains 85 experience points.

Keep track of your ammunition; anything you fired at the leech is lost under the water.

Female Vishkanya Nightmare Draconic Bloodrager 1

As the leech sinks below the surface, a visible change comes over Jasminder. It's almost as if she deflates, as her shoulders slump and she leans against her legs for support. The manic look is gone from her face, as her usual neutral expression once more comes over her features.

Marc places his Lucerne Hammer on the relatively solid bank behind him and offers Haelynn a hand out of the muddy water before climbing back up onto the embankment himself.

"Well fought," he says to Jasminder and Yumiko, looking somewhat sheepish at his lack of real contribution to the fight. "You are not hurt are you Jasminder?"

Assuming we are to continue across the stream, Marc will once more mount up on Taletheus to get across, rather than risk slipping on the rocks

Male Halfling Rogue (Scout)/1

Grendel nods appreciatively at Yumiko. "Nice shooting." He frowns as he looks at his sling, replacing it at his side. He then moves to bound across the stepping stones.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11

Male Musetouched (Azata-blooded Aasimar) Bard 1

Xargin lowers his bow, placing the arrow back in his quiver, then slings the bow into place over his back again.

"We trust no one is hurt? Our apologies for not being of further assistance... we are afraid combat is not our forte."

He crosses the stepping stones, then glances around on the other side of the riverbank, looking for any further danger or useful details of the area.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Ok, it will take a DC 10 Swim check to cross the river, or three Acrobatics checks to cross the rocks: DC 5 for the first jump, DC 10 for the next two. You may Take 10 on any of these checks if you prefer. Keep in mind Armour Check Penalties and taking a -4 penalty on Acrobatics checks to jump if your movement rate is 20.

Male Musetouched (Azata-blooded Aasimar) Bard 1

Xargin will take 10 on the acrobatics checks, giving him a result of 13

Xargin jumps safely across the stepping stones, making it to the far bank of this branch of the Soggy River.

Female Tiefling (oni/tian-min) Wizard (spellslinger) 1 (HP 7/7 AC:15 T:13 F:12 Sves F:+1 R:+3 W:+2 CMB:-1 CMD:12 Init:+3 Perc: +5) ; Itchy (-2 Dex, -2 Cha)

Yumiko makes a disgust-face at the leech entrails spread over the riverbank (and Jasminder). "Tha have got some on thy face. No ... highersome ... lowerwise ... wait. Nay, we thinks that was there afore the leechyguts."

She ignores the fact her own face is smudged with black gunpowder grit and her hair is a haven for twigs after hiding in the bushes. She carefully steps across the stones.

Take 10 Acrobatics will get a result of 13 for Yumiko.

As the others start to cross the river, Marc mounts up on Taletheus and leads his warhorse into the water again, gently coaxing his mount to swim across.

Taletheus Will take 10 on a swim check, giving him a 14

Once on the other side he scans the path ahead for any sign of danger.

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Male Halfling Rogue (Scout)/1

2 more acrobatic checks to cross

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Once across, Grendel starts to search for the trail as the others take their time crossing

perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
