Ashe will pause... pulling out a few sheets of paper he carries in his handy haversack. He will ignite those few empty pages letting them burn...mostly to nothing~ before stamping them out and scattering the ashes... as if the papers he retrieved from the cabinet 'were' burned. Then he leaves the room with the record filepapers and bloodstone retrieved from the cabinet safely stowed in the bag of holding for later study.

"Yes, Ebon.... let's retrieve Graxer's remains and quit this accursed place..."

Ashe leads the way back down to the underground docks and the waiting barge. He will board the craft and check to it's sea worthiness...

Ashe leads the way back downstairs to the Upper Caverns under the palace... to recover Graxer's body.

Whispering solemnly to the slain dwarven warrior, "Forgive this disturbance of your rest friend Graxer Firebeard.. but this lair of evil is no proper place of rest for OUR honored dead. Just a little longer and we shall lay you to rest..with all proper honor as befits a son of GORUM!"

Wrapping his body in a blanket Ashe picks up Graxer and jumps off the upper cavern ledge trusting his ring of featherfall to lightly bring him down to the docks level far below.

Ashe lays Graxer on decks of the barge.. and readies the craft for sailing... waiting for Jord and Edmund to arrive.

You reach the cavern where the barge is without incident. Once you all get onto the barge, however, and are just making ready to cast off, the water is disturbed as a horrifying creature rears up. It has the chitinous head, claws, and front end of a lobster, but the lower body of a spiny eel. A row of bright red spines runs down the length of its back. It is attempting to climb onto the barge to attack!

Edmund casts a spell and a bolt of lightnig flashes across the deck of the barge and engulfs the bizarre creature. Unlike a normal bolt of lightning, however, this one continues to crackle and dance along its area, granting concealment beyond 5 feet within the area, and total concealment beyond 20 feet.

Lingering lightning bolt. If it stays in that area when it's Edmund's turn again, it'll take additional damage (and so will anyone else entering the area).

Edmund, could I trouble you for an intitiative roll, please?

Jord is first to identify it: it's a reefclaw. Ashe, I think you met one quite a long time ago, so you recall that they are ferocious high-end aquatic predators, although of unnatural creation being the result of manipulations in the flesh-warping vats of Bakrakhan. Growing up in Korvosa, you've heard plenty of legends about giant ones, and know that as ferocious hunters, reefclaws terrorize both coastal waters and major rivers, feeding voraciously on fish, crustaceans, dolphins, and even land mammals come to riverbanks to drink. Once a reefclaw latches onto a victim it stays attached until either it or its prey is dead.

Reefclaws understand the most prevalent language used near their lairs (usually Common or Varisian), but they lack the ability to speak and they cannot normally read, so conversations are likely to be one-sided at best.

The spines covering a reefclaw secrete a slightly tacky ooze that is mildly anesthetic. As a part of its self-grooming, a reefclaw rubs the tines of its powerful claws against its spines, transferring some of the ooze onto its claws, which it then combines with its saliva to create a numbing poison. It's not a good idea to grapple with one!

Round 1

The reefclaw scrabbles its way up onto the barge, it will take it the round to reach you though as it's not very good at climbing out of water when there isn't a slope for it to ease it's way up!

Jord, do you want to do anything bar decide what the critter is?

Edmund starts to chant mindwarping phrases as he calls down lightning... with an almighty *CRAAACKKK!!!* a blue bolt lashes down!

Reefclaw's save: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 - it hisses as the electricity courses through it unabated.

From above, a hissing pseudodragon calls on the power of a ioun stone and magic missiles sputter down on the reefclaw, pitting its carapace.

The lighting continues to roil and spit around, regardless Ashe steps in drawing his sword and striking at the beast... striking it and severing one of its claws!

It lashes out with the other claw at Ashe.

Reefclaw attack: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (17) + 20 = 37, damage 1d8 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

Ashe takes the hit... a bit startled at how ferocious and BIG the beast is! Clearly this is no simply guard beast... it is dangerously powerful!

The soft subtle silvery radiance that always seems to wrap Ashe in a not-quite visible light of divine protection fades as his Vindicator's shield ends...

Ashe utters a soft prayer in celestial to his goddess... and suddenly he begins to bleed... from his neck, wrists, chest, and sword hand... a glow of crimson radiance glints from under his armor where the wounds opened.. and his cloak once white turns blood red crimson.. the tangy iron taste of blood fills the air about him...

Standard Action: Activate Stigmata +4 'sacred' to AC; Bleed damage 1pt

He lifts his shield to 'high-guard' taking a defensive fighting stance...

Move Action: Fighting defensively +4 'Dodge' AC

OOC: Here is where paladins suffer from the "power creep" of later classes... many things a paladin does take a standard action to do... like activate his Divine Bond {specifically} unlike the more 'modern' classes.. like Inquistor and Magus.. who do similar things but with only a swift action. Ashe's AC just went up by 8 to AC36! He is stalling the creature ..effectively letting it take a full attack action on him next round. Ashe will need another standard action before he can activate his divine bond for added damage. So two rounds from now he'll be able to attack with his divine bonded weapon. He may not bother and just full attack fighting defensively. A creature with a +20 to hit is nothing to play around with!

Majenko plunging his head into the bag growling an hissing in draconic... some rather ..."colorful"... metaphors.. as he searches for something to use on the aquatic beast... his tail thrashing comically back and forth, Ioun stones wildly adjusting their orbit to keep up with his posterior's thrashing about as he is almost swallowed by the bag...

This round, Edmund casts the requested glitterdust on the creature. Will save DC 20 or be blinded.

You can use this skill to cause an opponent to become shaken for a number of rounds. This shaken condition doesn’t stack

with other shaken conditions to make an affected creature frightened. The DC of this check is equal to 10 + the target’s

Hit Dice + the target’s Wisdom modifier.

Success: If you are successful, the target is shaken for one round. This duration increases by 1 round for every 5 by

which you beat the DC. You can only threaten an opponent this way if it is within 30 feet and can clearly see and hear

you. Using demoralize on the same creature only extends the duration; it does not create a stronger fear condition.

Fail: The opponent is not shaken.

Put it this way, if you're on the barge you'd better jump over the side right now! Shall we say a reflex save?

The reefclaw emits one last long hiss and expires, filling the air with a smell pretty much like roast lobster. Its carapace has gone bright red too.

But considering how fragile indeed the barge was.. in hind-sight perhaps it is best we did not use it?"

The tiny dragon lands on Ashe's shoulder tail wrapped around the Rod of Wonder... and affectionately nuzzles Ashe's cheek in appreciation...

Turing to the party, Ashe smiles, "..but fear not, JUSTICARS, all is not lost... I have another way for us to use the Waterway to escape...!"

Ashe reaches a hand into his Handy Haversack Belt pouch and pulls forth.. a marble statuette of a white elephant... complete with a howda on its back...

OOC: And fragile it was indeed as Majenko's fireball only did 20 points of damage... which would barely get through a strong wooden door considering the enormous number of hit points most vehicles have comparatively speaking... unless the vehicle is already damaged in some way.

OOC: I hate to double post.. but I'll just move this along...

Ashe holds the marble figurine in hand over the side of the pier... pondering briefly, "..I think I will name you... 'Alabaster'..."

Focusing his will upon the statuette he calls out, "Come forth.. 'Alabaster'... your master calls!", and he drops the statuette into the water...

But the figuring does not sink... in fact it begins to grow in size and the trumpet of a Bull Elephant is heard as if coming from a great distance... down a tunnel ...but rapidly approaching!

The Figurine grows into a full-sized white elephant... as it floats in the water the beast shuddered... lifting its trunk from the water to trumpet a reply to his master's call... as it stoney skin take on the subdued tones of flesh and blood.

The White Elephant waits patiently in the water... howdah on his back his eyes taking in the heroes on the pier.

Turning Ashe invites, "All aboard... he may not be a fast swimmer but... elephants are Very Strong swimmers.. 'Alabaster' shall bear us from this accursed place."

With no further comment Ashe steps onto the back the beast taking a seat in the Howdah... making room for the others.

Once everyone is aboard a gentle tap from Ashe and he commands Alabaster, "...swim from this cave and make for the south around Korvosa's cliffside.. we are heading ... by water to the Grey District..and the Cathedral of PHARASMA."

'Alabaster' makes no reply other than a grunt of effort ... but begins to swim down the natural cave tunnel from the pier out to the waiting sea as if it completely understood Ashe's spoken commands...

Swim: {Take 10!} 10 + 15 = 25
- Elephants are Huge Quadrupeds.. with a regular strength of 30! They have no swim speed ... but Even in Rough Seas DC15 {on the swim table, p. 108 PFCR}... that's still a success by 10! So as a full move he has a swim rate of 40'ft... faster than a man on foot! With a 30STR, Huge-Quadruped... I seriously down all our weight and gear exceed even his 1,596lbs light encumbrance value! This the 2nd of 4 uses the figurine is capable of in this month and it will last for the next 24hours

Majenko coils around Ashe's armored shoulder like a heat rock... tail still gripping the Rod of Wonder... as he begins to cat-nap... clearly knackered by ALL the day's activities...

Ashe himself rides in silence contemplating the JUSTICAR'S next moves.

An elegant solution! (Or is that an elephant solution?)

Ashe's dramatic leap takes him safely to shore, whilst Jord escapes the flames by taking to the water. Edmund, where are you?

Alabastar the elephant stands patiently as Ashe directs him to bear them out of the cavern. Once you are all aboard, he swims in stately manner along the passageway and out into the open air. Dawn is just breaking.

Where now?

I hadn't thought that Edmund was on the barge, since the thing attacked as soon as Asherick went aboard, so Edmund did his spellcasting from shore.

He is very grateful to see open air again, though saddened that they exhausted all places in the labyrinth and did not find any trace of his son.

It had already been a busy day for Iňuksuk. Something about the recent riots and plague must have triggered some sort of survival instinct in the people of Old Korvosa. While making his rounds this morning, he had learned of four new pregnancies and many of the soon-to-be mothers were not living in the best of conditions. He finished making his rounds with Nini. Things still weren't good, but after days of crisis after crisis things were strangely calm this morning. New babies and no need disasters. You must be up to something Old Deadeye. Knowing the priests of Pharasma are going to be better at looking after these new families than he could ever hope to, Iňuksuk headed for the Grand Cathedral to see the clergy, giant white tiger at his side.

As 'Alabaster' swims out of the sea cave under the cliffs north of Arkona Palace... it is clear to Ashe that taking a westward course out into the Conqueror's Bay though it might be inconspicuous under the high cliffs of the heights allowing them to travel south mostly unobserved... the height of the Merciless Cliffs on the western side of Korvosa would be completely un-scalable by 'Alabaster' without traveling miles to the south out of their way. It IS, after all, why the city planners never bothered to put any defensive walls to the western heights of Korvosa~ literally they are unassailable with cliffs some 80 to 100'ft in height below which the crashing and treacherous surf dash against the shoreless base of the cliffs unceasingly; that natural defensive wall more than enough to deter any attacker from attempting a landing on such a uninviting coast.

Ashe ponders briefly the gain's of being unobserved with hunted passengers like Neolandis, Orsini and possibly even by now the JUSTICARS themselves versus the impossibly obvious risk of riding a large white elephant through the streets of Korvosa~ literally announcing their presence and course of travel to the Grey Maidens~ and by proxy Queen Ileosa not to mention any lurking Red Mantis Assassins trying to reacquire their trail if they should take a easterly landfall on more accessible beaches of Korvosa.

Not an easy choice... but... with a sigh Ashe decides again.. that magic is perhaps their best answer to the issue, and he directs 'Alabaster' to head west out to Conqueror's Bay moving the shorter distance toward their destination... under the cover of the treacherous cliffs on the western side of Korvosa. He directs 'Alabaster' to give a wide respectful distance to the dangerous surfs that dash the Merciless Cliffs beneath the Cliffside districts of Korvosa where the Nobility make their homes.

Ashe gazes up knowing exactly where on the Cliffside heights the location of Whiteplume Manor resides. Seeing no lights on the cliffside of the Grand Mansion... knowing that would be the western library in his home where a light is usually left lit by Marcum until dawnbreak he hopes that means his family is safely away from Korvosa~ the Manor empty.

To those riding with Ashe in the Howdah.. the cliffs to the west are Clearly treacherous and completely un-ascendable for miles heading south along this shore! There is no obvious way to get up those cliffs without a treacherous climb... and no actual 'shore' to even land on...

Yes, thank you, a fly spell on the elephant would allow it to carry us all up the side of the cliff to our destination... such was my plan.. but I was going to use a limited duration item in my possession; a floating feather token. Ashe smiles touching the elderly sage's hand affectionately in return briefly whispering in reply...

Edmund:
"...thank you, forgive me... I am starting to feel weary and the stress of the situation is likely getting to me. You are quite correct, any and ALL advice you can grant me with is extremely appreciated! I'll try to remember you all have skills and abilities to contribute as well... there have been so many to come and go.. I've sort of gotten use to merely counting on what I know I can do... I'll be more inclusive in the future."

Ashe gently nudges 'Alabaster' as the spell is cast, "Up 'Alabaster'...take us to the clifftop... now you can fly!"

The white elephant trumpets a short reply... as he still moving forward rises out of the water smoothly and soars into the air with the grace of a cloud...

The view is nothing short of SPECTACULAR, as the jagged cliffs to the east march past as the white pachyderm soars into the sky... up over the edge of the clifftop and the panorama of the heights of Korvosa fall away below spread out for all to see. The rise of the Grand Mestaba with the tight cluster of towers and parapets of Castle Korvosa atop its summit seen in the morning dawn is breathtaking! Alabaster levels out soaring south-wise across the great city passing the oddly mysterious ruins of the six-toed gatefoot monument, and the wide terrace seating of the sinkhole containing the Kendall Amphitheater. Like a huge white zephyr Alabaster soars over the equally mysterious Pillar wall~ a line of 100'ft tall monolithic pillars that are all that remain of what must have been a magnificent barrier of a now long forgotten civilization lost to the mists of history!

To ANY out and about this bright morning.. the flying white elephant must be a mind-wrenching sight, but apparently not to the flocks of Pseudodragons that call the rooftops of Korvosa home as several fly apace with the incongruous soaring white pachyderm chirping and trilling in delighted high-pitched hisses at the sight.

Ashe who was tired, can't help but feel his spirits rise.. the utter freedom of flight as his long lost father Thomas Endrin-Whiteplume knew astride his Hippogriff 'Kyrie' as a Sable Company Marine must have been like this! And a stab of old pain at the too soon loss of his father finds him again... but he has no more tears to shed for the long missing and likely dead father who never got to know the man Ashe has become...

But all to soon the large white complex of the Pantheon of Many temple complex passes below giving way to the slate greys of the and somber tombs of the mausoleums of the Grey district...at the edge of which sits the high black marble walls of the Cathedral/Fortress of the Lady of the Graves - PHARASMA.

Ashe indulges in one last aerial circuit of the vast fortress before urging 'Alabaster' to land at the main gates of the Fortress. Clearly not something one sees everyday... from the reaction of the guards and soldiers on morning watch as the huge white elephant soars to a gentle touchdown at their front gates and Ashe dismounts helping Neolandis and Orisini down... while the rest of the JUSTICARS disembark from the Howdah as well.

Ashe turns to speak to the guardsmen, "...we must speak with Bishop d'Bear as soon as she is available... dire events have taken place and need discussion!"

Finally he pries himself off his son's shoulder and says, "When we couldn't find you in that Arkona dungeon, I'd given you up as eaten. Praise be to the gods you're alive."

Ashe is a little shocked at the attention the JUSTICAR'S arrival has caused ... but chuckles at himself... pondering the flying white elephant for not considering the obvious.

At the meeting of Edmund and his lost son... Ashe stops~ at the heart-felt moment. He does not try to hold back the tears of joy in his own eyes... and prays silently {Thank you goddess.. THANK YOU IOMEDAE & PHARASMA for letting this lost son.. restore at least one son and father!}

He does not approach letting their moment last... THIS is a paladin's reward... this moment... to bask in the joy of seeing the hearts and lives the paladin's efforts have brought together in happiness and hope!

Ashe feels well-paid indeed!

Even Majenko still cat-napping wrapped around Ashe's armored shoulder can feel the emotional swell of joy in the paladin's heart and though he does not waken.. he nuzzles Ashe's cheek affectionately.

Eventually Ashe turns to regard the remains of Graxer and somberly he bears his honored comrade's remains as he dismisses 'Alabaster'... back to his hand sized statuette form, {...now I must return this son of stone to his father earth...}

Ashe gestures to Neolandis and Vencarlo to follow him over toward the dishevelled looking Bishop d'Bear ready to slip away quietly to her, but the arriving Sable Company Marine on his Hippogriff catches his attention...

Ashe moves to his side to help him stand, "Sable Marine, are you injured...? Fear not there is sanctuary here..."

Seeing the man is only greatly fatigued... Ashe rests a hand on his shoulder expending the last of his daily laying on of hands to remove his fatigue completely or heal any injuries not obvious... as a soft golden light suffuses where his touch fills the Marine with new rested vigor curing any disease afflictions as well!

A quite large scarred man with a grim expression walks up to Ashe. He has the bronze colouration typical of the Shoanti but he has the black hair and blue eyes more common in a Varisian.

He is wearing a suit of mithril full plate armour that has obviously seen use but is currently quite clean. Adorning the armour are a couple of Varisian scarves and an elegant holy symbol of Desna is proudly displayed on an embroidered sash.

While very obviously effective weapons, the earthbreaker sheaved on his back, the longbow balanced on his shoulder and the steel klar that he is wearing on his left arm have some decorations on them. The scabbard of his earthbreaker is also adorned with some well done wilderness scenes

He bears only one visible tattoo, a tattoo of a crescent moon.

"This seems to be a busy place. If I am not mistaken you are Ashe, a distant cousin of mine. I'm sure that you'll be glad to hear that your mother is safe. It was she who mentioned to me that I might meet up with you here at the temple of Pharasma. If you wish I can tell you something of her, although I'm guessing that you'd want a little more privacy for that.

My name is Garridan. Although my home is here in Korvosa I have been travelling in a place where no news came from Korvosa and only recently returned to the city. You can imagine my shock and dismay to find what has transpired here. I've heard many, many different versions of what has happened. Some say that Queen Ileosa is a demon, some say that she has been the salvation of the city. I know that she has made a great many troubling changes but some say that these are for the greater good.

The name of your group, the Justicars, has been bandied about a fair bit. Some say that you oppose her majesty, some say that you are in league with her and are her greatest agents. That you merely pretend to be opposed to her in order to draw out others.

I've sought you out to find out what is actually happening and to see if I can help to restore Korvosa to peace and tranquility. At the moment, I am neither an enemy nor an ally of the Queen. Hopefully you can change that. It is very obvious that she is the key to saving Korvosa."

He then turns towards Talin

"I'd thought the Sable Marines were disbanded and outlawed? Perhaps you know what has happened to my brother, who is a member of the Sable Company. His name is Tarbast. Tarbast the Rotund as we know him. He is a tall, scrawny fellow with a notable scar on his forehead. Very proud of his Varisian heritage. He has gone missing and I've been unable to find any trace of him"

Although he has no weapons drawn, it is fairly obvious that he is alert for any signs of trouble.
