Well, my original scheme was along these lines but on a grander scale. Unfortunately, pulling it off would've required a lot of work and creativity...and things just weren't coming together for me, plus, this side trek would've been lengthy and gotten us away from the stuff that's actually part of the AP as written. You guys scuttled Plan B: The Ransom. Scarplume and I were moving on to Plan C when I remembered that I needed to make a random encounter check since you folks had been involved in a somewhat loud and flashy battle after curfew. I figured that in the event that an encounter did happen, it would likely be with a dottari or Queensman patrol, and Scarplume could wash her hands of you all by turning you bunch of curfew-breakers over to them. But the adventure's random encounter table had other plans....

@Davina: Enjoy PaizoCon!

With Davina possibly having a spotty posting record for the next couple of weeks and Dom M.I.A., I'm both worried about a short-term slowdown in the game and long-term implications if Dom's player doesn't return soon. We'll see how things stand when Davina's vacation ends, but if Dom isn't back by then...what do you folks want to do?

As I see it, we've got a couple of options:

1) Bring Jessibel backs as a hands-on field agent of the Silver Ravens. That would give the party five members again and some buffing and healing...but she's no Dom once combat breaks out. Leora and T'chazzar would seemingly become the party 'tanks'...if you could call them that.

2) Bring in a new 5th player and character. I'd likely ask you folks if you know of a player from one of your other forum games who might be interested.

If Dom returns to the boards after we recruit a 5th player, I'd be more than willing to bring him back into the party and nudge up the challenge for a larger group.

Heh--almost. I figure folks have too much invested in these PCs to start anew after 2-1/3 years, especially when most of the drama was caused by rogue dice. So much had to go wrong/right in that one round of combat. (It's been a while since I took a course in statistics, but even just to have a critical threat with a crossbow is 10%...and then for it to confirm, to cause higher than normal damage, and finally for T'chazzar to fail a DC 12 Reflex save when he has a +2 bonus from cover.... Well, that brings the percentage down even more.)

I'm surprised no one caught (or mentioned, at least) that the Red Jill threatening to off T'chazzar was doing so with an unloaded crossbow (he had to double move to get up next to the drow), so between reloading and a coup de grace, he'd have had to take a move action and a full-round action to have a shot at killing T'chazzar...an opportunity for the party to intervene albeit a risky one.

As for Dom, I'd be willing to replace him if need be, the death of Zea, whom he stated he was sweet on to Kiri, gives a good reason for him to fade away for a time and a reason to explain his absence should he return after that. I'd be willing to get a replacement, or have Jessi, though someone tanky would be prefereable.

As for changing out characters from an effective TPK I would agree on the time investment as a reason but that doesn't apply to this character as she is too new for that, though I enjoy her far more than I did Kiri.

As for the rolls, yeah they were very much against us though this is also a very hard encounter for some reason. Both campaings I've been in it has nearly been a party wipe. The dice really hated us too and that didn't help. I did catch the fact that he was threatening to execute T'chazzar with an unloaded crossbow but Falina had no way to know this as she couldn't see. It probably should have been a Bluff roll withan opposed Sense Motive for us to figure that out and it might have changed things considerably if we made it.

I considered that but decided to make sure my post included the other tieflings reloading as a subtle hint. Also, he wasn't really bluffing: It was just going to take him a little bit longer to follow through on his threat.

I added the three tieflings on the ground floor (since the encounter was technically designed for 4 2nd-level PCs) and tweaked the Red Jills' stat blocks (made them hellspawn tieflings with the Thug archetype), but I think the tweaking actually made them a little weaker. It did end up giving them a numbers advantage, when the PC party split and engaged both groups at once.

I left Scarplume unchanged, figuring a flyer might be challenging. She was supposed to fight to the death, but I think she might make for an enjoyable recurring villain.

Sorry, had a lot going on the last few days. I am unexpectedly dog-sitting along with other shenanigans.

I will be on vacation June 15-July 2. Should have intermittent internet access, but will be in Alaska, so no guarantees!

I'm fine with recruiting another PC, and of course having 6 if Dom comes back.

2 major things in the fight - we split the party like you said, GM. Then, during the ambush, most of the party was on the roof and stayed on the roof. This gave the bad guys had free reign to shoot at the party, while there wasn't much the party could do in return. Throw in some good rolls by the GM, Dom hanging out in the building, then AFK (after I dumped all my buff spells on him... oops), tons of confusion with the heights of the rooftops, and a flying enemy and it was even tougher.

GM, it's pretty grim in game, what with just coming out of the days of wrath, don't kill off all the NPCs ;)

I'll admit that the wholes plit with part on the roof thing wasn't good. Having said that i wasn't very clear about that until it was too late to make much of a difference.

Yeah splitting the party was a bad idea. I was hoping to take them out fast, but that didn't work.

I'm good with recruiting a 6th if we don't hear back from Dom. I like Davina. She's my first PbP character, and I'm fond of her. On the other hand she does have a spellcaster daughter away at school who would take up the fight if her mother is killed.

She's the same age as Jess. Oh the shenanigans.

Red Jill #6 might've bled out by the time Leora channeled positive energy. The other two are stable but still unconscious and (barely) in negative hps.

I sent Dom's player a final PM to see if he's out there and wants/is able to return. But he's been gone a month and the game's bogging down, so some new blood might be just what we need.

Agreed, a new player would be good. Wouldn't hurt to have 6 PCs if Dom does come back.

If Tchazzar doesn't have a silver weapon, cast align weapon (good) on his main hand
If he does have a silver weapon, she will cast cats grace on him

I don't have a silver weapon, but if we need to fight some kind of fiend I can just Smite it. That will penetrate its DR.

If it's just a summon monster spell, it should only last a few rounds, though. We may just be able to run out the clock on the spell.
