Hey hey, lets not get unreasonable here ;D Hahaha

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

We're about to get into some serious stuff when I get up in the morning to write up a real post. Civil conversation has a chance until I post again.

Addie, I didn't weigh in before, so let me just say now: I love your character. The harrow readings, His Lordship, the wit. Brava, friend! Very unique, best witch I've seen played so far.

Aww, thanks! You guys have created equally great characters to participate with. I'm just working to measure up to your quality!

Thanks for the compliments. I'm hoping that Celia will exalt a bit when I can get in some conversation or into some fights.

Indeed, thanks for the compliments. You measure up quite lovely =] Celia, you as well, and Shannon. The particular comment towards Addie was after one of her posts about His Lordship, who reminds me of my cat a bit. It's a high quality game so far!

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

I'm always glad when I notice that I pick the right characters. My favorite group is a well-balanced group of good writers, and it's not easy to come by that.

I totally lie on my priorities when recruiting, by the way. I noticed that I really only accept people that write well.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

You gotta be careful about that whole wanting good writers. Some good writers are total a@+&*&%s. :)

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

Are you hinting at something Shannon? ;)

I actually am! But nobody in this game. I work as an editor and deal with writers all the time. Some of them are great writers but terrible human beings.

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

You wouldn't happen to be an editor for tabletop games, would you? I'm trying to break into the field, either as a freelance thing or a staffed position for the supplements. It's a newer dream, so I'm still trying to learn as much as I can.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

Moreso for publishing companies that specialize in fiction genres or for academic/technical material. But it just so happens that I am a backend designer for OHMS Gaming, a startup company working on a few tabletop and card game ideas. We debuted the tabletop game Wasteland at Gencon 2 years ago. Incidentally, I will be back at Gencon this year in a couple of weeks, but this time it will be for pleasure not business. Planning to do some PFS mods and learn 2 GM PFS, as well as attend some of the seminars with the paizo bigwigs panels to see what's going on in our favorite universe.

My advice would be to manage your self-promotion. Be careful about most startups because the vast majority of them might want you, but don't have the capital to pay you. Or to pay you what your services are worth. Really what you'll wanna do is start building a portfolio if you haven't already (a portfolio being basically your resume that shows hard evidence of your work for just about whatever or whomever you do any editing for, even if grandma needs her cookbook recipes edited). Then you pitch your portfolio and yourself to gaming companies and see what you can snag. I say shoot for the stars. Hit up luminaries like Frog God games and such. See what kind of responses you get.

Freelancer.com can be a good resource, but take extreme caution. If it seems too good to be true or something doesn't make sense, don't trust it. Ask questions of everything.

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

Excellent, sounds like an awesome summation of general advise. I'm starting to work up my portfolio the last few weeks in particular, actually. I'm hoping to get a few ideas copyrighted, start putting myself out there for basic work, etc. Would Gencon be something you'd advise getting to as far as the networking aspect goes, or would it be a few years before I'm ready for that level. Obviously I'd love to go just for the events, but in a more professional fashion I wonder how much I can learn there.

Also, would you say that my editing portfolio can be enhanced by my own work, and the things I've been writing, or even stories I've participated in on forums like this? What is considered too much, and what particularly would make me stand out against other people? Solid authorship? History editing? Bachelors? Masters? Networking? I've still got a couple years before I'm entering the job market, so how best can I prepare between now and my BA, other than your already great advise about the portfolio. Sorry if that was repetitive.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

Include everything in your portfolio. I made the mistake of getting a late start on it so there's a lot of early good stuff I just failed to get access to. Now, you won't necessarily present everything to every prospective employer, but you will want to have examples from your portfolio that will be in their best interests. Tailor it to the contract. (Or job.)

Gencon is a good place to go for networking and elbow-rubbing, imho. But be cool about it if you do. Personal experience proves that being on the vendor side of Gencon is hectic and distracting, and while you might want to engage in getting to chat biz with others, sometimes the biz itself keeps you from it. But the crews that are there and have bigger teams can be more welcoming and more fun to talk to. I mentioned the Frog God guys for a reason because they were super approachable and really awesome to talk to when I was there a few years ago.

All that said, you should primarily treat Gencon as a fun trip, especially your first time. Get to know the whole experience. Attending the right seminars will land you some really good insider advice, too. I'm planning to attend the Sunday seminars put on by paizo this year that deal specifically with how to go about freelancing/writing for their company. What their expectations are, what materials they use, etc.

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

I'm squealing inside right now, thanks so much for your advise! I've been looking for answers to those questions for weeks as I get more into this mode of thinking, and you just summed the gist of it into two posts. Much obliged!

I put some stuff in the campaign thread for y'all.

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

What's the penalty for wielding a heavy flail in one hand? -2? I feel like Jess would probably be a big enough BAMF to do it, "And screw the penalties!" Also, are there feats that negate the penalty? I don't think I know of any at least, other than a 3.5 rule from the Weapons of Legacy book.

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

I'm pretty sure a heavy flail is a one-handed weapon. If it's not, I meant it to be the one-handed version.

Otherwise, you can't wield weapons that are too large for you. (that is to say, two-handed weapons in one hand) unless you're a Titan Mauler barbarian. You can wield weapons that are too small for you, one one-handed Large weapons, at a -4 penalty to hit.

BTW, sorry guys, ive been at registration.

Male Human (Ulfen) Level 1 Barbarian; AC 14, 12 touch 12 flat-footed; HP 15/15, Fort +4, Ref +1, Will +2; +4 Initiative, +2 Perception

Right on, wasn't sure how the rules for that went. No, the heavy flail is a two-handed martial weapon at 1d10 damage, a light flail is a one handed martial weapon at 1d8 damage. The light flail works well, thank you for the clarification.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

Just a heads up that I'm going to be at Gencon from the 14th through to the 19th. I may have some chances to post from the phone and keep up, but it'll be intermittent. Don't wait up for me too much. Things should be back to normal around the 20th.

Apologies for the absence - I've been dealing with some health issues. I should be able to get a real post up tomorrow.

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

Not a problem, I've got a lot of PbPs to keep me occupied, as well as real life. Take care of yourself, that's what's important.

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

Where's Jessnen? I've been waiting on Jessnen and Addie.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

No idea where Jessnen is. Doesn't appear to have logged in since the beginning of the month. What's your plan for that, GM?

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

If we've got the other three, I could pick up another player and keep running with it. We have a few options with that to make it a little more seamless, but with two of them we'd have to go now.

One is that whoever joins in plays Jessnen.
Another is that whoever joins in plays one of the current revolutionaries.
And the third is that we get an entirely new person, and have them think of a way to work themselves in.

I have only one problem with waiting, and its that people lose interest over time. If we have an issue and Jessnen isn't coming back, I'd prefer to replace him ASAP.

By the way, I totally neglected to get this point across to you guys. Each of the revolutionaries save Janiven and Arael (3rd level in PC classes already) are 1st-level NPCs, but each of them have a potential to become a PC class. Considering that these are your closest allies, each of you could potentially train them in whatever class they have a potential to become, and thus improve your group's chances as a whole.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

I thought that might be the case with the NPCs.

I tend to find that people get more attached to their own characters than to characters they didn't design, so I would go straight to trying to incorporate a new PC. At this point it wouldn't bother me if we just retconned a PC other than Jessnen having accompanied us. That said, you could either go on a fishing expedition for another fightery beefcake or pick up one you considered but glossed over in the original recruitment.

There were a couple of quite interesting martial-type characters in the recruitment thread (Zalika Cailean and Ichiro Tanizaki). Perhaps one of them could jump in as another of Janiven's revolutionaries that we haven't met yet? Either person may be reachable by PM.

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

Is there a person that you guys would prefer? I'm going to go back to the recruitment thread when I have some spare time to go rooting through it (I don't really at the moment) but I'd like your input first.

I see interest in Zalika and Ichiro?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

After looking through them again myself, I am also most partial to those two concepts.

On the one hand, Zalika is cool and a half-orc and a beefcake. But also the party would feel estrogen heavy! Not that I have a problem with that, necessarily.

On the other hand, Ichiro is cool and might be a bestie unless he thinks Shannon sucks and Shannon goes all diva on him. I'd like to say he'd keep some of the male bravado, but he's a dandy, too.

That said, I'm happy with either and leave it to GM choice.

F Half-orc CG Urban Ranger 2 | AC 17 T 14 FF 13 | HP 17/18 | CMB +4 CMD 18 | F +4 R +7 W +2 | Init +6 | Perc +7

Hello folks. I received a PM from Ieinathan asking if I'd be interested in jumping aboard as a replacement for your missing barbarian. I'd love to, and thanks for remembering me.

Sorry I didn't post here right away; I had a lab paper that needed finishing first, so I became a little distracted temporarily from introducing myself here.

What is your preference for having Zali enter the fray? Retcon her presence from the start or have her come in as another rebel? I'm fine with either approach, but would probably prefer to come in fresh as a new character rather than the retcon approach.

Also, from a GM POV, are there any changes necessary to the character build or background to make her a better fit at the moment?

Male Human (Chelaxian) Bard (Chelish Diva) (HP 11/11 | AC 11 | T 11 | FF 10 | CMD 10 | F +0 | R +4 | W +4 | Init +1 | Per +6)

Welcome! Another thing I can say is that I knew you had a good rep for sticking around, just from what I have seen on the boards. I think the retcon is easiest but I will leave it up to the GM's aesthetic. :)

Male Human Dungeon Master 2/Fop 1

I think if Zalika wants to introduce herself as an original character, that's what she should do.

F Half-orc CG Urban Ranger 2 | AC 17 T 14 FF 13 | HP 17/18 | CMB +4 CMD 18 | F +4 R +7 W +2 | Init +6 | Perc +7

Alright then; I'll get myself up to speed on what the party has been up to so far, ponder how best to segue into things, and post something when I get home this evening - it being 3pm here at time of writing. Will that suit you folks?

As for any rep for sticking around, I can't answer; I confess to ditching one game I joined due to the appallingly bad GMing (That was a Zeitgeist game). At present I have three active characters in other campaigns (CotCT, RoW and RotRL), another character about to start (Second Darkness), and two in campaigns which have died (A Jade Regent where the GM disappeared before we finished the first encounter, and a sci-fi home-grown that started well but just ran out of steam as players left).

F Half-orc CG Urban Ranger 2 | AC 17 T 14 FF 13 | HP 17/18 | CMB +4 CMD 18 | F +4 R +7 W +2 | Init +6 | Perc +7

@ DM Leinathan - here's my proposed introductory post for Zalika. I'm assuming a connection between Janiven, Morosino and Zalika - since she's also a bodyguard she is probably known professionally to Janiven, and the fact that Zali is a secret worshipper of Cayden Cailean would make her an ally of the Iomedeans when push comes to shove. If you approve what's below, let me know and I'll post it in the gameplay thread, or you could just cut and paste it there if you don't want anything changed.

DM Leinathan only for now, please:
Early morning saw Zalika stalking through the Rego Pena, nodding politely to some of the street vendors with whom she was familiar, coldly staring at others as she passed - those whom she knew to be cheats, charlatans or worse. Although she did her best to avoid getting her boots spattered with the nightsoil still puddling into the gutters there was too much to fully avoid the reeking filth dumped in the street here and there. Even in this part of Westcrown – the ‘Coin Sector’ – with its counting houses and other lucrative businesses, little effort was expended by the city officials to maintain minimal standards of cleanliness. Why should the bastards? They have servants and slaves to step in the s*@# for them. The rest of us ‘peons’ just have to wade through it and live on scraps…

Turning into the small plaza where her current employer conducted his business – a minor merchant with interests in shipping grain and perishables throughout the inner sea, but whom had little regard for those he paid to protect his premises – a harsh bark of command echoed up the street and alerted her to trouble. Sidestepping into a shadowed doorway, Zali peered around the edge of the portal, watching as the few early morning hawkers and servants along that section of the street also hurriedly sought to find a nook to hide in. The rhythmic tread of heavy, iron-soled boots and the jangle of armor heralded the progress of half-a-dozen dottari along the thoroughfare, led by a snotty-looking young noblewoman on a light warhorse, the engraved highlights of her own armor picked out with gilding.

Must have been some trouble last night, else those arrogant pigs would still be in their barracks nursing hangovers. The half-orc waited until the detachment turned the corner into the main street before leaving the doorway, stepping back onto the filthy cobbles and walking into the open plaza ahead. Once it had been an impressive square lined with the townhouses of prosperous merchants, well-to-do officials and minor nobility, all arrayed around a small central park of carefully tended flowerbeds surrounding a cascading fountain, surmounted by a statue of Aroden. Now the place had a slightly desperate, grubby air about it – the statue to the god of man shattered and tumbled into rubble, leaving the fountain choked and causing the remaining dribble of water to pool into slimy, rubbish filled basins. Likewise the park was now a weed strewn islet of dirt surrounded by cobbles, the stumps of the ornamental trees long since hacked up for firewood.

Looking sadly at the buildings arrayed around the place, Zalika’s eye fell on the mouldering façade of what had once been a small chapel, its doors now barred with chains and a heavy padlock, once magnificent stained glass windows either smashed or boarded up. Only hell and the thrice damned House of Thrune will suffer to be worshipped by the populace now, whatever their edicts proclaim to the contrary. She was so caught up in the rare – for her – moment of introspection that she almost failed to notice the pale youth huddled in the mouth of an alleyway next to the abandoned church, and who was trying to attract her attention without revealing his own presence to anyone else out in the plaza. What the hell is he doing here at this time of day?

Crossing the plaza quickly, the half-orc woman stepped into the dank alleyway, grabbing the youth’s arm as she passed and pulling him deeper into the reeking laneway beyond. Glancing either way along the alley to ensure that no-one else was lurking in the morning dimness behind the townhouses, she pushed the boy ahead of her and let go of his arm. He stepped back and rubbed his arm where Zali had gripped it. ”Sheesh Za… um, I mean ‘Gianna’…" He remembers to use her current pseudonym at the last moment, “Why’d you do that? I was already hiding in the alley, no-one else saw me.”

”Because you may as vell have been standing out in zhe plaza dressed up in jester’s motely singing ribald tunes about Abrogail and Asmodeus rubbing uglies togezher, zat’s vhy. Zat vasn’t being careful, Morosino – not vit zhe dottari all stirred up about somezhing.” As always Zalika’s prominent canines caused her to slur her dental fricative phonemes, making her sound like a bad stage-actor’s idea of an Ustlavian bandit. No-one ever survived unbruised to laugh twice at her accent however. ”Now vhat is it zat Arael and your friends have done zis time? I’m guessing zhere’s trouble or you vouldn’t be in the Rego Pena zis early in zhe morning. Tell me.”

The young human had the grace to look slightly chagrined at her criticism, perhaps recognizing it for what it was – more concern on Zali’s part for his safety and at his apparent foolishness at running around one of Westcrown’s more heavily patrolled districts than real anger, especially since the last thing Morosino and his Iomedean friends would want is official attention. ”There was a raid last night, and the Hellknights have him in custody. Janiven has a plan to free him, but she needs more help to do it, and you know your way around locks and things, as well as a sword.” The teenager looked up at the half-orc woman’s scowling face. In truth Zali wasn’t actually all that much older than Morosino, but in size, temperament and experience there was a world of difference between the pair.

Sighing to herself, Zalika stepped back from the boy, closing her eyes and inwardly praying. What the hell are you about to get me into now Cayden? Iomedeans and their plots! Damn you, you bloody drunk, alright… Although her thoughts might be considered profane if they were directed towards another deity, inwardly the half-orc could recognise the hand of the Lucky Drunk at work, pushing her into making a decision. Fine! So it’s time to get off the fence and help those fools. You won’t be happy until I’m dead or in prison, but I’ll do it, for Jaelle and the others…

”Alright Morosino, take me to your friends…”

Welcome aboard, Zalika!

Sorry to hear about the less than stellar experiences with other games, Zalika. I've been doing PbP on here since sometime last year and I've already picked up the habit of vetting potential DMs by doing some searches through any other games they've done. (Yes, leinathan, if you're wondering, I did the same to you!)
