Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
Hey all! I've been packing to move for the last few days, which explains my relative absenteeism. The move is tomorrow and I may not have access to my computer for a few days... It'll be nice to be in a new place, but moving is a pain!

I’ll suggest a metric to check if you’re able to “sleep in” to get your spells.
Base DC 10 Fortitude save + 1 for each hour past sunrise (6am here in the desert) that you sleep.
Korum went straight back to bed after being awoken at 1am. 8hrs sleep after that would be 9am. 9 - 6 = 3. DC 13 Fort save for Korum to get a full 8hr rest.
Layaali “stayed up a little bit” helping Razif clean the chapel. I’ll say that equals 1 hr. She went to bed at 2am. 8hrs would put her at rising at 10am. 10 - 6 = 4. DC 14 Fortitude save.
What does Uzma do? Does this metric seem fair to y’all?

You're one step closer now, Razif! You've levelled up to 2nd level! Send me your updated character sheet to we.be.dunedinpfs@gmail.com when you can, please, and let's see your HP roll.....remember, I will roll as well, and you can have my roll if your roll is crap (but you don't get to know what mine is until you claim it).
Razif al-Akkuya
All right, let's start by doing my HP roll right here!
HP Roll: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
...I'll take your roll.
It's 12AM here so I might not have it finished till tomorrow, sorry about that!
GM Dinketry
|
GM roll for Razif’s HP: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Better, but it couldn’t be worse, right?
Razif al-Akkuya
Not an incredibly exciting level: I got Precise Shot for firing into melee, and put ranks in my Knowledge checks. Still, it's a step towards greatness and setting things on fire!
Rab-rab Bunnis
2 people marked this as a favorite.
I'm here! Oh, boy!
I AM SO EXCITED!
Korum Scratcher
Hey folks. I just logged on for the first time in almost two months. I've been dealing with some addiction stuff, mental health stuff, and general life stuff. I don't think I'll be able to continue with the various games I've committed to online, but wanted to jump on and say that I appreciate all of you for reaching out and trying to work with me.
Thank you and good luck in your future adventures!
Richard
Razif al-Akkuya
I've only had the pleasure of playing with you for a very short time, but it was a joy! I'll be sad to see you go, and best of luck in dealing with anything you might be facing right now!
Layaali Twice-Born
No worries!
Razif al-Akkuya
Just a heads-up! I'll be abroad to visit my girlfriend this weekend, so I can't guarantee I'll be able to keep up my regular posting pattern.

I hope everyone's Passover Seder or Easter basket was delicious and gut-filling. Or even that last meal that you had!
Rab-rab Bunnis
The Easter Bunny came to my house! And I had dinner with my family and had some eggs hunts. It was great! I love rabbits.
Layaali Twice-Born
Easter's her favourite holiday.
Razif al-Akkuya
I believe Layaali refers to this area here:
https://pasteboard.co/HgoSuu7.png
Which looks like it's a hilly area that runs between two sets of mountains.
Rab-rab Bunnis
Yeah those! We all think they look like hills, cause they are, silly! Or on the map, at least.
GM Dinketry
|
Ah, I see the area you're referring to - yes, those are hills in between the mountain peaks. My apologies: I thought you were calling all of the mountain peaks to the west as 'hills'.

Let's take a step back to summarise where you are and what you guys are doing.
You've been tasked with scouting out Kelmarane and the surrounding lands in preparation for the taking of the city from the Kulldis tribe of gnolls. You know nothing about this tribe save for their name.
You have a safehouse HQ: the monastery. There, you can rest, regroup, heal, and even purchase some basic supplies. You've even got a native scout (the geier) who has told Uzma that he will lookout for any assault on the monastery.
You have a number of locations that you'd like to explore in addition to Kelmarane - the old shrine, the falls, the ruined fortress, the hilly pass to the western mountains.
You are in the desert. The Players Guide for this AP has a lot to say about traveling in the desert. For example, "The desert is a harsh and cruel mistress. Obey her warnings, and you will be lucky only to receive her lash. Ignore her, and she will forget you, and then you shall be truly lost." And for those of you who are more rule-minded, this:
Heat and Exhaustion
The deserts of Katapesh are blistering and inhospitable, qualifying as “very hot” (90º F or higher) from late morning to late afternoon most of the year, and “severe heat” (110º F or higher) during those same hours in the summer. In very hot or severe heat conditions, you run the risk of heatstroke. You must make a Fortitude save (DC 15, +1 for each previous check) every hour if it’s very hot, or every 10 minutes in severe heat. If you’re wearing heavy clothing or any kind of armor, you take a –4 penalty to saves against heatstroke. Failure means you suffer 1d4 points of nonlethal damage and are fatigued. Like the damage suffered from starvation or thirst, this damage can’t be healed until you remedy the cause—in this case, cooling off, finding shade, or reaching nightfall alive. Keep in mind that if you’re already fatigued and suffer from a condition that would force you to become fatigued, you become exhausted instead. This applies to a combination of starvation and thirst, starvation and heat, or thirst and heat.
I've waved my hand to date with people traveling to and from the adventure proper, and you've been inside the monastery basically since I took over running this AP as GM. Now it's going to be different, as you're moving outside in one of the most demanding natural outdoor settings.
Welcome to the desert.
GM Dinketry

So, as you've been given a handful of tasks that all require travel from about an hour (Kelmarane) to a few hours (the ruined fortress) away, and you would need to be sure of safe shelter from the day's heat, it would make sense that you would be doing day-trips and forays, and coming back to the monastery for rest and gearing up, not one long 7 day circuit.
Those cumulative heat stroke checks do not look like fun.
Let's talk strategy.
Rab-rab Bunnis
Against the weather Rab-rab has a +2 bonus from her hot weather clothes, and another +2 bonus from her basic aerokinesis ability to make breezes.
What time of the year is it? Is it very hot or severe heat for the hot hours of the day?
Razif al-Akkuya
Razif has the Desert Dweller feat, which means he can ignore "very hot" conditions and treat "severe heat" as though it's "very hot", as well as needing to drink only half the amount of water for a medium creature, and a +4 bonus for saves against thirst. (Also a save bonus against mirages and glare)
Considering Razif will be much less impeded by the desert circumstances, he'll gladly use this advantage to alleviate any trouble the other characters might have (such as carrying armor), and will stay in his own armor and offer to move in the frontline.
Also, maybe we should arrange for a camel or something to help carry our stuff, so we can keep a good pace going.
Min Bunnisbeldar
Min has a +2 vs. hot weather from his clothes, too, but his fortitude is not as nice as Rab-rabs. The heat will bug him lots.
GM Dinketry
|
A camel would likely be too difficult to move stealthily, and very easy to track. Additionally, you’re unlikely to get one from the caravan, as they consider them essential.
Most of you are built with desert conditions in mind. Just re-emphasising the desert’s presence.
Razif al-Akkuya
Fair enough, no packing animal. Then I guess our best option is to take the colder hours as much as possible, move as fast as possible while remaining stealthy, and bring lots of water!
Uzma Mahdi Al Kalid
Indeed, Uzma can survive even in the most extreme desert weather (+10 to fortitude saves against the effects of hot weather). Furthermore, he can cast Cloak of Shade to protect up to 2 people against hot weather, reducing the severity of environment as one less... But always safer to avoid midday and travel in the morning and evening!
Drael Kapernos
Drael will definitely struggle in the heat, with medium armor and no traits that help him against the heatstroke save. Traveling in cooler hours and doing our best to stay rested will hopefully help a lot.
Razif al-Akkuya
Razif should still have like 5 days worth of rations left over, so he's good. He would like to purchase another waterskin and fill both that and refill his canteen so there's a decent amount of water coming from him for the whole group to use.
Also, incredibly important question: As Razif has been given the map, does he get to write names on it?
GM Dinketry
|
Razif can write whatever he wants to, but the map that you’ve been given is the map of Kelmarane city. You don’t have a map of the environs - that’s what Almah showed you that has the labels on it.
Razif al-Akkuya
Yes, exactly. I thought it'd be nice to use the map for some notetaking once we've scoped out the place a bit more!
GM Dinketry

I’m going to be out of town attending a wedding for the next week from today. Please bear with me as posts won’t come as frequently.
Rab-rab Bunnis
HAVE A GREAT DAY!
Min Bunnisbeldar
HAVE A GREAT TIME!
Razif al-Akkuya
I just noticed that my character has a pretty nasty mistake in it:
I'm using the Desert Dweller feat, but I don't (yet) have the prerequisite class feature for it (Favored Terrain: Desert). I'm terribly sorry this slipped through and took so long to get noticed. How would you like this handled, GM? Because it's clear this feat shouldn't be available to Razif yet, and it could give a sizable advantage in this situation.
GM Dinketry
|
Razif, thanks for catching this. I think it's best that we simply knock out your Uwaga Highlander trait as a means of making up the difference, and I'll allow you to use the Desert Dweller feat as a full feat.
Sound fair?
Razif al-Akkuya
Sounds fair to me. Consider the Highlander trait gone. Sorry again for not catching it earlier!
Most unfortunately, Razif is neither prepared for the darkness nor the cold, though he'll certainly learn his lesson if the night proves rough.
Layaali Twice-Born
Layaali uses her halo to light the way, and will recast as necessary to keep it lit.
She has a winter blanket which she'll wrap around herself for the cold.
However, Layaali (being Layaali) will give away her blanket to someone else the moment she realizes they don't have any protection from the cold, so she'll suffer while someone else is niece and toasty. Probably to Rab-rab.
