Hey guys, my house is battling a stomach bug. Concentrating on things is hard. I'll update tonight or tomorrow.
Now it's your turn! Remember when I had to cancel our game day because I was hugging the porcelain?
Seriously, though, hope you're all over it soon. Those bugs can be nasty.| Elegad Espris |
No problem! Enjoy your non-ill weekend. Though you'll probably feel terrible after a hangover, haha.

I guess I may be a little confused, but is premeditated murder considered OK in this city? For some reason I'd had it in my head we were going to be heroic "good guys," but the story now seems otherwise.
Well we're still playing a fantasy roleplaying game. What is a crime in this world is different than in real life. You're going in to bust up a drug ring that a guy is using enslaved children to run. If he fights back and dies nobody is going to care.

For the DM: I also a question about 5e skills: I assume that it's like in 3e, where a player can choose to have his or her PC outright disregard Diplomacy attempts from any source, no check needed?
Do you mean by that players can't be forced to take actions/ think a certain way because they failed a diplomacy check?
If so, then yes, you are right.

From what it sounded to me, was that this guy is not only a crook, but that he has the rest of the crooked government on his payroll, and thus is operating with impunity. And our Mr. Johnson hostess is gathering a posse group of the last pure-hearted citizens that she thinks has the will to put him down.
Perhaps if the DM included a background "character knowledge" vignette of a trial for a recent crime of Lamm, wherein the circumstances were both heinous and obvious, but he got out scot free due to an obviously bought judge/legal system, then would this vigilante system seem more appropriate?
Mind you, I have no such qualms. Whenever I've seen a pacifist character in an RPG it has never gone well.
DM Jam
Lamm is essentially a small time criminal that always manages to weasel his way out of suffering any consequences. It's not so much that he has tons of people on his payroll, he's just very adept at lying, cheating, intimidating and murdering his way out of trouble. If he has an in with the Korvosan Guard for instance, it's probably because he blackmailed them in some way.
He isn't the big fish in the pond, he's the parasite that is beneath the notice of the big fish and leaches the life away from the little ones.
That make sense?

I think Heroism is something we may or may not develop over time.
As it stands right now, as good as Elegad may actually be, he's not in a good place and currently has no incentive to become as good and heroic as he likely will eventually be.
You can try and be as heroic as possible from the start, but then there's not as much character development. Paddy's probably not going to like how this will go down.

If he fights back and dies nobody is going to care.
Assuming Paddy knows this, the first quote tells him that "somebody" will care very much -- the people being blackmailed -- aka his own department. If the blackmail potential dies with Lamm, they'd have murdered him in his cell before the last trial ("Oops -- musta hanged himself!"), so evidently the blackmail stuff doesn't die with him. Which means if Paddy helps kill him, the stuff gets released and his own department kills him.
Do I sense that I'm supposed to flee the city after this adventure? (Mind you, if that's where the story goes, I'm fine with it.)

If so, then yes, you are right.
I can follow that, to a point -- for example, are they similarly immune to charm person spells? (If so, then it's very consistent, if maybe a little silly. If not, then you're back into "magic >> skills," which I guess is also a thing.)
Anyway, thank you for the clarifications, and sorry for all the confusion -- uust trying to get my head around the system expectations and the setting expectations, neither of which I'm familiar with. Thanks for being patient with all these questions!

That is... a lot of drastic assumptions.
Okay, counter situation. The victim of the blackmail is a middle aged secretary that does dispatch for the Guard. She is terrified that Gaedren will out her granddaughter that has a pesh addiction, so she sends him a tip off when she knows they are coming for him. She certainly has no ability/ demeanor to murder him in his cell and she certainly isn't going to/ can't kill Paddy for offing Gaedren. In fact she would probably send Paddy a nice fruit basket anonymously.
Ultimately you should play Paddy how you want. I was trying to make you feel better about the situation, but maybe that won't happen. So be it.

Thanks! I turned 30 yesterday so was relaxing then and out in London with friends for the day on Saturday! :D
Hopped out of my twenties and now the idea is to not have a crisis, haha.

Not sure why my message didn't go through beside, but thanks very much for the birthday wishes!
Apologies for the delay in posting. I'm usually on top of things but my laptop died and with such a huge amount of work on my end at the minute I haven't been able to catch up on my phone. Never mind the fact typing forum code is incredibly laborious on an android phone.
I should be able to catch up this weekend. I'm sorry if I've delayed you!

OK. I'm totally confused. Could someone reacap what the situation is at the moment? Where everyone is, etc... Not trying to be dense, but I'm really confused at the moment.

Orion and I climbed the fire escape around the rear of the building into a room on the third floor with sleeping/drugged kids.
Paddy and Bas have gone through the front door, claiming to be here to pick something up.
I think you and Elegad have your choice of which approach you want to go for.

What Saul said. Thanks Saul!

Red Feather, did you want to join Orion and Saul from the back of the building or did you want to join Paddy and Bas in the front? Or maybe something else?
Red Feather
Here we are our first encounter, and we've already broken the ole "Never Split up the party" golden rule :-)
I guess I'll go towards the back of the building, but not join them to break up their scam. Just kind of be a nearby innocent bystander until needed for something.

That's the first thing I thought of, too! But DM Jam indicated he was mostly interested in us role-playing our characters how we see them, and there's no way I could reconcile Paddy following Orion's route in.

Finals are over and I'm currently competing at a national leadership conference. Should be back by Monday and resume a better frequency of posting now that schools out.
Apologies for the lack of keeping you all informed. Up until now most free time was trying to fix metaphorically shooting myself in the foot on one final.
Red Feather
RF is still here as well. Just not very sneaky, nor good at fooling people. Guess he'll get antsy here in a bit, and go see what's going on... but no idea what's going on inside at the moment.
DM Jam
Yeah jump in anywhere you want Red Feather. If you go into the front of the building, you will be with Paddy and Bas who are trying to talk their way into the place. If you go up the fire escape, you will be with Saul and Orion who are going all stealth kill team.
Alternately if you have something that you want to do outside, feel free to do that!

Hey all, I had a family member pass away over this past weekend, so my next few days will be full of family and funeral stuff. This coming weekend is also commencement at the university I work for, which generally takes up a chunk of my time. My posting will be a bit spotty this week as a result. I’ll still check in and post as I can though!
