Kin's Legacy Of Fire - Act 1 - Howl Of The Carrion King

Game Master Dave McMaster

I've GMed on a couple other forums in PbP games, and I think it's about time I consider running one here. I've been reading the Legacy of Fire adventure path and think that it is absolutely stellar in design and story elements.

So, I've been thinking about running a game but want to see who is interested out there first. It'd be most likely a five player game, but I'm willing to have characters in reserve if someone drops out. Which will most likely happen if history is to be repeated.

If I get enough replies to run a game, then the first five will be given a game slot, and the posters after that given reserve slots. Would anyone like to play?

Ruleset: Pathfinder 3.5 Beta
Adventure Path: Legacy of Fire
Racial Restrictions: Open to any really, even those outside of the Pathfinder rulebook. Talk to me and we'll discuss how to balance it out. Outlandish races must have a viable backstory and must not be of the evil alignment.
Class Restrictions: The core classes in the rulebook.
Players: 5

Ooo! Ooo! I would love to get in on one. I'd like to play a martial sorcerer, maybe a fighter to start with sorcerer levels later or vice versa...

James

Sure! I always liked the idea of a fighter/sorcerer type character. =]

All my PbPs are in a lull right now :( {Hey, James, are you still playing Iggie if Bargle gets rolling again?}, but I think my LoF DM will be coming back in a week or two. If he doesn't, I'll be kicking myself for not getting in here....

Sounds like a lot of fun and this is one of the AP's I would love to play one day....but I have two PbP's going and so my plate is pretty full at the momment...so I'll pass.

Have fun!

Ed

Interested, how about a cleric.

Dark Archive

Interested in playing; preferably a rogue, cleric or sorcerer
"I'll buy that for a dollar"

Liberty's Edge

I'd be interested in playing, not sure what class at all though. Might fill out a role the party is kind of lacking in if you would have me.

So we have four people interested so far:

James Martin - Fighter/Sorcerer
The B Guy - Cleric
Lord_Viper_69 - Rogue, Cleric, Sorcerer
Michael D Moore - Fill in class
OPEN - OPEN

Looks good so far, if we're going to have a well rounded group we should go for more meatier classes for the last two slots to take some blows.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Moore! :P

Sovereign Court

I’d like to get in on this, maybe a wizard or bard with the Seeking Adventure campaign trait if you’re using traits from the player's guide.

I should warn you though, this would be my first PbP so I’m not entirely familiar with how they work.

Yes, I think it would be a wise idea to be using the campaign traits - anyone who doesn't have the player's guide just tell me and I'll provide them for you. =]

So that's five! I'll definitely be running the campaign then. Also, I'll be taking things out of your backstories and placing them in the campaign, so when making characters be sure to flesh out the history. :D

James Martin - Fighter/Sorcerer
The B Guy - Cleric
Lord_Viper_69 - Rogue, Cleric, Sorcerer
Michael D Moore - Fill in class (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Rogue plz? ;D)
Calixymenthillian - Wizard, Bard

Sovereign Court

Oops, just caught your comment about classes - I'd be happy to take a ranger instead if it helps.

So do you want us to post our characters in this thread or is there someplace else we can go? While I am familiar with PBP, this is my first on this site.

That would help if you played a Ranger - but I don't mind if you take a Wizard or Bard instead. Whatever you feel suits you the best. And it's alright if you haven't plyed PbPs before, they're quite easy to learn how to play. :)

James Martin - Fighter/Sorcerer
The B Guy - Cleric
Lord_Viper_69 - Rogue, Cleric, Sorcerer
Michael D Moore - Fill in class (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Rogue plz? ;D)
Calixymenthillian - Wizard, Bard, Ranger

The B Guy - to create a character you have to create an alias from your My Account page, then post the info on there. For example, I'm posting from one of my characters in another PbP on this site.

After finishing up there, just post here in that character and I'll be able to look up your stats and help you out.

drat full!
lat me know if you need an alt

Alright, you'll be the first I'll contact then. :)

If any of you need clarification, we'll do our character planning here.

James Martin - Fighter/Sorcerer
The B Guy - Cleric
Lord_Viper_69 - Rogue, Cleric, Sorcerer
Michael D Moore - Fill in class (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Rogue plz? ;D)
Calixymenthillian - Wizard, Bard, Ranger

Xyrophobic - Reserve

Sovereign Court

This is what I’ve come up with so far.

Spoiler:
Growing up in the Garundi community of Solku, Jakari of the Three Fountains spent much of his childhood in fear of the frequent gnoll incursions, but found comfort in the tales of heroism and adventure told by his clan elders. Hoping to follow the example of the folk heroes he so admired, as soon as Jakari came of age he joined the militia to fight off the White Canyon gnolls.

During his time of service he saw many of his comrades and friends lose their lives in battle. This diminished his enthusiasm for war somewhat, but he became all the more determined to live up to his heroic ideals, even if the means by which he had hoped to achieve this were no longer to his taste.

Once the gnoll threat seemed broken two years ago, Jakari left the militia and retreated once more into the folktales that had inspired him in his youth. It was not long after this when a pair of Pathfinders, on their way to some newly unearthed ruin, made a stop in a tavern that Jarkari often frequented. Hearing them speak of their exploits, he couldn’t help but draw parallels with the deeds of his mythical idols, and found himself excited by the prospect of travelling the world as part of such a group.

Before the Pathfinders left on their way, he begged them to allow him to go with them. They were at first reluctant, but found it hard to say no to his enthusiasm and soon agreed to allow him to join them as a porter. The expedition proved straightforward, and Jakari proved himself competent enough that the pair offered to help him gain membership at the Grand Lodge in Absalom.

Having accepted their offer, Jakari now finds himself a full member of the Pathfinder Society and his first assignment brings him back close to home...

I’ve left it a bit open at the moment so making changes to incorporate some of the other characters will be easier.

So we'll have a character in the order of Pathfinders, eh? That'll be a great addition to the storyline!

The background looks good, especially with the early conflict with the gnolls. That'll be perfect for this story. =]

Will Jakari be a wizard, bard, or ranger?

I think I'll go with a two weapon ranger, it's skillful enough to fit and we do seem a bit lacking in the meatshield department.

Hello! James here: I'm going to go with Gerr here, a recycled character from another PbP. He's starting out as a sorcerer and will be multiclassing soon. A few questions:
What level point buy are we going with?
How are you doing starting HP?
Are there any restrictions on gear?

Thanks!
James/Gerr

Indeed we are. But... not so much as we were before now. :D

James Martin - Sorcerer
The B Guy - Cleric
Lord_Viper_69 - Rogue, Cleric, Sorcerer
Michael D Moore - Fill in class (Fighter, Barbarian, Paladin, Rogue plz? ;D)
Calixymenthillian - Ranger

Xyrophobic - Reserve

So we've got a cleric, ranger, and sorcerer. Looks to be a creative group already!

Level point buy will be 20.
HP is max at first, then random roll HD + Con bonus after that.
No restrictions on gear, except for no magic/masterwork items at creation.
Starting gold will differ with class/background.

Glad to see things moving along with this group, I'm excited to start soon. :D

I will work on it, thanks for the info. My preliminary idea is a wandering cleric of Desna (from Magnimar or Korvoso - half Varisian/half-orc) with the travel/luck domains. But I need to go over the LoF players guide, it may give me another idea.

Dark Archive

I will go with a rogue-like character, not necessarily the class but the skill set will be used. I run games RP heavy and would like for those opportunities to be within this campaign.

I do not have the players guide. The only Pathfinder book I have is the campaign guide, I DM most of the time, I find Pathfinder interesting. I will search online for more resources.

Should we read about what the Legacy of Fire setting is? I don't have any knowledge about it. I have the RotRL complete set and am familiar with that as a result.

Let me know, late

In the exotic nation of Katapesh, a land of fortune and wonders, heroes are those with the courage to command their destinies. Such wisdom leads a daring band to the abandoned village of Kelmarane with the hopes of reestablishing the once prosperous community. But buzzards still feast upon the secluded settlement’s corpse: a savage tribe of gnolls and their bestial allies hold the town in the name of a merciless master known only as the Carrion King. Can the PCs retake the village from its feral conquerors, or is Kelmarane but the first bastion of civilization to fall before the hordes of the mysterious warlord?

That is the basis of the first session of the Legacy of Fire AP. Katapesh is a country that is filled with deserts, magic, and genies, think of an Aladdin type setting. You can either have a generic background with the above facts in mind, or you could make a character with the info of the RotRL set you have.

You could also look on the Pathfinder Wiki if you want more information. If you need anything else, especially specifics like traits, just say the word. =]

Dark Archive

Quick query: Am I able to use the information from the Campaign Setting for the Katapesh nation as part of character creation and background? If from Katapesh, would I be able to choose the Cosmopolitan feat?
If so, then I have several options I will look into.

Additionally, I have found a Pathfinder Beta RPG PDF file, fill-in format; with feats and weapons listings. If you already have it, then okay. If not, I can provide it, it seems a good resource.

Yes, that would be fine for the character background and creation. I don't have that book unfortunately, so just include what the feat does in parenthesis after it. I'm very open, so I'm guessing the Cosmopolitan feat is fine.

And I have the Pathfinder Beta PDF file already. Isn't it a great resource? I love it. =]

Liberty's Edge

Still looking through the Beta rulebook and reading some stuffs up but I'm likely to make a fighter since it seems to fill a gap in our team :) I have to admit I don't know a lot about Katapesh and really wish the Legacy of Fire Player's Guide was available :( to help me out. Will consult my Gazeteer for more info though.

I'll send you the player guide if you want - just give me an email address. =]

Fighter sounds good, we definitely need one!

Dark Archive

I could use the players guide as well, if you're willing.

The PDF I have is the character sheet, I didn't specify. I'm unsure if I have the Pathfinder Beta PDF, I'll check.

I'll send you the address incognito.

EDIT: No pathfinder beta, had it at one point

I was also going to ask something else but can't recall what it is now. If I remember I'll be sure to ask though.

Alright, sent to both. And don't worry Mike, I'm sure it'll come to you.

We've got a cleric, a sorcerer, a fighter, a ranger, and a rogue-like character then. I'm liking how this all is looking. =D

Profile for my character created

One question: as to Race traits, there is not one that matches Gregory; Kelshite is closest geographically but I would prefer Vudran

I rolled 170 for starting gold, if you want some program for it then i'll use it, hopefully won't lose too much

Barring any other issues, except for the campaign trait one,
Gregory is ready!

"Let's see what we can do"

Ok, I think all that's left is equipment. Are we rolling for starting wealth, or are we using the average?

I'll list the comments for each character under the spoiler tags, it's a nice way to organize them. :P

Gregory:
~ Your Dex/Int values are switched around in the about section and box/fill-in section, but since you have a +3 to dex in your AC description I assume you mean that he has 16 dex and 14 int.
~ You need to pick a favored class, I'm guessing Rogue, and so you get a bonus HP/skill point for each level he has in that class, bringing your HP to 10 and one of your skills up +1. :D
~ One thing, in the game posts must be past third-person, I'm not sure if you knew or not but just wanted to say because the background is in first person, which is fine by the way.
~ Love the background, it ties in VERY nicely with what will be happening in Kelmarane. I like our party rogue already! =]

Jakari:
~ We're rolling for starting wealth, I trust that no-one will cheat. ;D
~ You're sheet looks perfect except for the health, 1d10(max) + 3(toughness) + 1(favored class) + 2(con) = 16, not 17. Please tell me if I'm missing something!
~ As I said before, I'm interested in the idea of having a Pathfinder among the group, as I think it will really spur Jakari on in certain situations later on. =]

Gerr:
~ I can send you the player's guide too if you want, just give me an email adress. :)
~ I'm assuming you have yet to take out/edit some items in your character sheet based on the answers to your earlier questions, so I'll hold off on the technical stuff.
~ With a couple more characters with campaign traits, try and see if one meshes with your character. They really enrich the experience and I'd be ecstatic if every member of this group managed to pick one. If not, then try to come up with a reason why he would be in a traveling caravan to try and take back a city.
~ A destined bloodline, eh? Now that'll be interesting, and works well with a battlemage type character. =]

Also, Hero Maker 2.5 is a great way to visualize your characters, and I recommend spending a bit of time to create a figure for your and the group's use. :3

Equipment is sorted, and I've linked to an image. Almost ready to go!

I think Toughness gives me 4 extra hp (3+1/HD), or is it +1/HD in excess of 1?

Ok, character is done. Only rolled 80gp (which makes sense, given his background).

Spoiler:

Full Name Chance
Race halforc
Classes/Levels Cleric 1
Gender Male
Size M
Age 16
Alignment CG
Deity Desna
Location Katapesh

Languages common

Occupation Healer

Strength 16
Dexterity 9
Constitution 12
Intelligence 10
Wisdom 17
Charisma 14

Traits: Finding Haleen (cleric) and Birthmark (Star of Desna- +2 vs charm/compulsion)
Feat: Eschew Material Components
Domains: Luck, Travel
Skills: Healing, Sense Motive, Knowledge(Religion)

A ship sailed onto the beach with only 1 living thing on board, a young halforc child with a star mark on the back of his hand. Taken into slavery, Chance was protected by Haleen. Eventually, though her actions he was freed and taken in by a wandering cleric of Desna (who taught him the basics before wandering off again). He returned 1 day to find Haleen gone. Later, he had a vision...

.8gp cash
Starknife
Staff
Leather armor
Rufus- a guard dog

spell component pouch
holy symbol-wood
Backpack
bedroll
waterskin
Clothes: clerical, traveler, peasant
Food: 3 gp worth

=80 gp

So where do we go from here.

Jakari:
~ Oops. My bad, haha. I do think that's the right way, and one more HP couldn't hurt. ;D
~ Just noticed, you're missing the offense part of the sheet. Just write one up quick to keep track of your weapons/bonuses/damage/etc and he'll be all set!

Chance:
~ You're going to need an offense and defense section of your sheet. Just take a look at one of mine or your groupmates to get a handle on what they look like. =]
~ You also need some basic statistics and pick a favored class.
~ Having a pet is too much for a cleric, as only druids and possibly rangers are allowed to own one. Clerics are able to summon pets though if they have the spell, so you could do that instead. Sorry though, no Rufus. D:
~ You also need to calculate the bonuses for each skill that he possesses.
~ I think that having a half-orc cleric is very unique, and the fact that he's a cleric of Desna makes it even more interesting. This group is turning out to be quite the circus show! (A GOOD THING :D)

The B Guy, after all of your characters look okay I'll put up an OOC thread and Play Thread, and the story will start. =]

Updated the issues.

Spoiler:
Last thing to decide on is the campaign trait, the little keepsake. My idea is the following-
Keepsake: Unimposing ring with design of Cheliax flag, ruby and onyx used, worth 350 gp (pg 68, Pathfinder Chronicles: Campaign Setting).
Ring construction is that of hardened silver, hair thin on bottom (so as not to be seen if hidden) but strong as steel
If gloves ever removed, the ring would be moved upside down.

Ok, I will work on the character and adjust tomorrow.

OK, modified Gerr based on input and changed his background to select the Finding Haleen trait. (I'm not a big fan of extensive backgrounds, feel free to supplement as needed!)

To DM:

Spoiler:
For character purposes, I'm changing the martial wpn proficiency from scimitar to ranseur, a little less useful but it fits with the background. Also request clarification as to the race trait, nothing specifies Cheliax so should I choose one or what? I already stated my choices if such was the case.

Gerr:
~ For your attacks aren't the javelin/trident +3, not +4? Where are you getting the extra +1?
~ What is the Arcane Strike feat exactly? I'm not quite familiar with it, sorry! :D
~ Unfortunately, Chance has taken the Haleen trait before you. Unless you want to have been raised with that other person and are setting out together (which might be good storywise), you'll need to change it. D:
~ Other than that, Gerr looks ready to go! =]

Gregory:
~ I'm so sorry! I completely forgot to put that part in earlier, my bad. D: It's fine if you want to pick the Vudrani trait but still be Cheliaxian. We'll assume somewhere in your ancestry there was some Vudrani mixage, and it's manifesting in you.
~ I like the ranseur choice, interesting for a rogue. =]
~ Gregory is officially finished and ready for play after you edit that in!

Just posting this for my reference and so I don't have to scroll up and down the page for the characters. ;D

Gerr - Sorcerer, James Martin
Jakari - Ranger, Calixymenthillian
Gregory - Rogue, Lord_Viper_69
Chance - Cleric, The B Guy
??? - Fighter, Michael D. Moore

Hiya, sorry about the delay in posting my character but here's a rough draft. Let me know if there's anything requiring changes and the like. I still have to spend some gp but was wondering how much a camel would set me back?

PS. Are there links for the discussion and in-game threads yet?

Edit: Doh! I was wrong about thrown weapons... Arcane strike allows me to swiftly imbue my weapons with arcane power and deal +1 damage and treat the weapon as magic... And I have no problem with being raised with another PC if that works.

Spoiler:
Gregory will be in the Nightstalls looking for one last item (poison) prior to leaving for the caravan and will tell those that he knows of his trip to Kelmarane.

As he is leaving for the caravan Gregory states: "If anything should happen to me, I would request that the proper retribution is wrought upon those responsible."

Added the offence section. But I've just noticed that I don't have the 15 dex for two weapon fighting - I'll change some stats around when I get back home tonight, I'm posting from my phone at the moment so it's a bit awkward changing profiles.
