Elvara answers Quints question in a whisper while most others are busy discussing more important things, "I haven't heard it, but I would love to hear it some time."

Elvara mutters a quick cantrip when Kressle mentions the hideout of the Stag Lord to see if she remembers where it is.

"So nice that you know where it is Quint." Elvara sends him a warm smile, but it quickly disappears. How does all these violent men end up as leaders? Like dad, or Alexander or now this Stag Lord. "I too would very much like to deal with him. Why do these violent men end up in power?" Her voice is tinged with regret and desperation. "Though are we heading there right away? This time we aren't in a rush. Is it far away quint? Maybe we can do something else on the way there for example?"

"Violence begets more violence, I've found. In communities where the strong rule over the weak, you only last as long as you can fight off your challengers. From what I've heard, the orcs live like that. Hardly civilized, but effective in what it does."

Alamina frowns at the thought of a violent warlord in charge of the area, but quickly shakes off the sadness. She smiles again warmly, "But I'm sure this place can be made much more friendly. Maybe we could even attract some caravans through, it would be nice to dance and sing with other Varisians again."

Raven suddenly joins the conversation. "Violent men lead because most people don't have the backbone not to bow down to them. That's what we're here for: to not bow down."

Turning to Alamina, Raven replies, "We're here to do a lot more that. I believe we're supposed to pave the way for Brevic expansion."

"Hardly bitter. I don't mean to come off that way. I just wish more people were nice to one another in this day and age." Alamina sighs.

"So many times, the strong take what they want and smash the weak or meek to the ground. How many times must we repeat this cycle before something better comes around?" She fingers the butterfly symbol on its chain around her neck, an affectation she barely recognizes performing.

"I just dream of better things and better places. I know they are within our grasp as a people, if only we could stop the arguing and just listen to the Song."

Quint smiles back at Elvara and considers her question about the distance to the Stag Lord's fort. He thinks about the tales he's heard from travelers and the scraps of map he's seen.

"I don't know exactly, but I would guess probably about fifty miles or so, give or take a bit."

He listens to the various conversations around him.

"Maybe, if we get to know the Stag Lord's men, we could convince them to abandon him. I've got some, ah, experience with bandits," Quint casts a nervous glance at Kesten. "Some of them just want to live free, but others have a mean streak like a skunk. We just need to figure out what kind of bandits are following the Stag Lord."

Raven gives a small smile at Alamina's idealism. "Desnan, are you? I admire people who think that they can make a better world. Dumb as cow dung, sure, but I admire them nonetheless." It's clear that Raven's making a joke here, but then she sighs. "But until you people sing everybody a better place to live, or a way to get all the food we need, or make all weapons magically disappear, the rest of us just have to live here."

Raven turns towards Quint. "Seems about an even mix. Some bandits we captured during the raid were obviously pressure into it, but I think the ones higher up in the hierarchy joined willingly."

"I agree with Alamina that more people could be nice too each other, that we don't just end up as an extension of Brevoy. That's certainly a place where violence rules. Former pirates at the throne..." She sighs

"Still, Raven has a point too. It's not going to happen by us just wishing it to be so. We have to make it so, but we can only do it one tiny step at a time, one deed at a time, make this place a bit nicer."

When Vorsirion speaks of making a plan Elvara smiles again. "Yeah, let's move on to what we can do right now. We got a number of options: We can head straight for the Stag Lord to the south. Also to the south there is this tribe of kobolds in the Kamelands. There is the boar Tuskgutter in the Narlmarches as well as what we were going to look for Svetalana there. Then of course there is this Falgrim Sneeg."

Elvara looks after Kressle getting away. "Hey Kressle, wait a bit. Have you heard of someone called Falgrim Sneeg?"

Kressle wrinkles her nose at Falgrim's name. "Sneeg? Sure, I've heard of him. Nearly broke his hand one time when he got a bit feely with me. I may have been bedding the Lord, but that doesn't make me communal property, you know?" Last I saw him, he was licking boots back at the keep. Though I don't know which direction Nalmarches is, it might be south too. "Learning what we can first seems like a good idea. Kressle, I'm sure you wouldn't want the Stag Lord to win then hunt you down for betrayal either. How does he fight? Does any of his men have any unusual skills or powers that they use in combat?"

Kressle shrugs at the request for more information. "It's been a few weeks since I've been to the keep, but there were roughly a dozen men going in and out of there. Half a dozen on patrol or cleaning up the area. The keep itself was half demolished, but there was talk about repairing a palisade and gate around it."

She thinks for a moment. "The Stag Lord is a fierce opponent, skilled with blade and bow. His lieutenants are foes I wouldn't want to take on myself; Dovan isn't much in a fair fight, but watch your back. Auchs is a simpleminded brute with the strength of an ox. And Akiros is... a decent sort, for someone in this line of work. Still hides behind his broken beliefs, though that's better than giving into the rage of a madman, I suppose."

She glances around. "Look, I think I've more than held up my part of the bargain. Have fun storming the castle, and all that. Let me go."

Quint also does not have a horse, but my understanding is that there should be extras that can be borrowed from the existing characters.

After an evening of rest and re-provisioning, the party sets out to the South West. For the first time since coming to the Stolen Lands, you take more careful exploration of the surrounding land, mapping it as you travel. Towards the end of the day, you see a large single piece of natural stone that juts up to a height of 15 feet. Sera and Franka recognize the edifice as Eagle Rock, so named for the vaguely avian features it has. More importantly, however, several of the women would remember Svetlana’s request for Moon Radishes from the grove nearby!

That is perhaps easier said than done, however. As you approach the radish patch, several of you notice small draconic humanoids! All of them have short spears, though they do not seem to have been anticipating trouble, all but two are lying on the ground. They look startled and grasp their weapons!

Sense Motive DC 15:

One of the startled kobolds shouts out excitedly!

Draconic:
”Hey, this is our patch of Ground-Roots-That-Taste-Good! You go away! Leave us alone!”

There is a chorus of shocked and flurried conversation in Draconic: "The soft-skins speak the Dragon's Tongue!" "Profaners!" "They seek our roots!" before one of the less... full... of the reptilian creatures holds a spear up and shakes it at the others. "Silence! Let me speak!"

He turns to the party, focusing on the ones that spoke in Kobold.

Draconic:
"The Ground-Roots-That-Taste-Good; these are a bounty that are bestowed upon us by the great Kobold Ancestors" (he nods at the giant rock outcropping, that if you twist your head and squint could almost look like the head of a kobold) "This is a sign that we should form a new lair here, after being cut adrift for three Moons by our tribe."

At the mention of harrasing humans, he looks visibly upset. That is not us! We harm not the soft skins! The shaman Tartuk has mislead many of our people, drawing them away from the wisdom of Chief Sootscale! We have left the tribe to avoid the conflict that brews between kobold, soft-skin, and big-heads that the shaman intends to lead us to!"

Vorsirion looks at the kobolds skeptically. He did not trust such creatures to keep their word, and therefore did not see them as valuable allies.

Still, he did not feel like slaughtering them for the roots.

Perhaps this agreement will work.

The kobold leader tilts his head in a oddly reptilian motion. "Big heads. Greenskin, too many teeth, annoying songs? Big heads." He states that so matter-of-factly that it seems like you're asking "what is water?"

Knowledge local DC 15:
It's unclear from the description, but it sounds most likely to be goblins.

Looking to Quint, hesitantly: "Tartuk is not... villain. Just dividing clan, turning clutchmate against clutchmate. As he is not of our brood, I would not mourn his death."

He draws up as Quint relays Raven's words, eyes bulging slightly. "Soft-Skin-Slayer?" He considers it a momment. "I believe we can forge peace between our clans. Yet, we cannot abandon such a sign from our ancestors and deface the works of the Great Kobold Ancestors. We will form the Stonemaw tribe here and promise to avoid conflict with your soft skins if you leave us to our peace. Trade shinys and foods. This, I pledge as Chief Stonemaw." He jabs his spear down emphatically!

With the trade of the weapon and your excellent diplomacy, you have made in-roads with the resident kobolds (though not enough to satisfy the request to quell the Kobolds quite yet.) You also are able to get a number of Moonradishes for Sveltana.

Where to next? Continuing South - south west in the direction of the Keep? Or anything else you wish to do here?"

Vorsirion smirks as the new 'alliance' is forged.

Until they decide they would rather kill us, at least...

The elf re-mounts his black mare and prepares to continue their explorations.

Continuing south-southwest toward the keep sounds good to me.

Knowledge (local): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

I'm pretty sure I know what they are describing, and I'm not sure why it is DC 15.

Quint bows to the kobold, Draconic: "Can you tell us how to find the Sootscales? Maybe we can talk to them and get them to stop attacking the soft skins? Would one of you be willing to come with us and speak on our behalf?"

He puzzles over the kobold's statements. "Tartuk isn't of your brood? Where did he come from? What can you tell us about him?"

"So what did they say? Will they stop bothering people? From what you said before it seemed like there was a divide. Has that been resolved? I'm not sure we can be content with only negotiating with parts of the tribe. Should we do something about the rest of the kobolds, where are they? Will they help us against the Stag Lord to the south?" Elvara is skeptical, some of it stems from the fact that she can't fully understand what they are saying.

"I can't help with negotiating, but at least I can offer my magic to help." Elvara says and walks over to Quint to boost him with guidance for the negotiation.

Too me it sounds like we still have to deal with this Tartuk? Also chief Sootscales is not there either right? We should at least figure out what we can do to fully complete the quest before leaving south.

Quint blushes a bit when Elvara touches him to deliver her spell.

"It seems like their tribe has split. This group is going to form a new tribe, the Stonemaw. But their old tribe, the Sootscales, are probably still going to attack humans. I just asked if they could tell us how to find the Sootscales, and about their leader Tartuk. The kobold said that Tartuk isn't 'of their brood', so I'm guessing he's from outside their tribe."

Quint scratches his head as he thinks. "Actually, they said that Tartuk is a shaman, so maybe he isn't their leader? But they said that he was going to lead them to the 'big heads'." Quint shrugs.

I think Elvara is right, we should deal with the Sootscales one way or another before continuing south.

"These kobolds will form a new tribe here, and offer to trade in peace with us or our friends in the future."

Alamina gathers up some of the moon radishes and smiles at the small reptilians.

Draconic: "Would you be so kind as to advise us where your old tribe is? We could render aid to your former chief and help to smooth the rift between Sootscales and Tartuk. Also, where are these Big-Head singers from? We might be able to handle that problem as well."

"We may as well keep heading south. If they will, they'll give us directions to their old tribe, and possibly to some other creature's with which they've been fighting. Either way, we can continue towards the keep."

When Quint blushes at her touch Elvara blushes back. Why is he blushing? I didn't do anything inappropriate, did I? But he's cute. And much much nicer than Alexander.

"Hopefully the rest of the kobolds are nearby, then we can quickly deal with this issue and then move on to the Stag Lord. Maybe we'll even end up with help from them if we play our cards right?"

The new chief of the Stonemaw does his best to answer the party's questions Think I'm covering them all, but nudge me if I miss one.

"The Sootscale Lair is three Moons to the south, in the Soot-mines. The route to those mines will take you past the Big Head lair. If you happened to slaughter the Big-heads, I am sure no one would really mind." He tries to look helpful.

"As for the Sootscale... if you bring peace between Tartuk and the Chief of our prior clan, it should make the soft-skins that trade for glitter-rocks happy once more. I would think."

Quint, you can *guess* what the big heads, but I upped the DC because the kobold was being somewhat vague. I'll lower the DC or make it obvious what the creatures are when you have more to go on, especially if you see them.

"Sounds like they pretty much are on the way. I think we should deal with them first then. Though I wonder what other creatures he was talking about. Big-heads was it? Is it possible to get more accurate directions than somewhere to the south? Some landmarks to go by, perhaps?" Elvara muses after hearing a translation of what the Kobolds have said.

Did we finish exploring this hex already?

Vorsirion listens to the kobold explain the whereabouts of various groups in the region.

"This area, despite being relatively unexplored, is certainly inhabited," he muses. He wraps himself tighter in his gray cloak, shivering slightly.

"There are many more things we could investigate, though I suspect our biggest concern is this Stag Lord still, especially since we have upset his apple cart. We should continue toward his keep," the elf suggests.
