  • With regards to posting, I'm available whenever you need me. I can post as often as I have access to the internet.

I haven't been on the Paizo forums for too long; about a year, I'd say. Rest assured I can play well with just about anyone.

My posting will be weekday evenings and weekends.

I can read the Paizo forums from work (but I'm not supposed to), but the proxy server locks things out when you try to log into ANY forum.

There will also be events like this next "weekend": I will be attending a BSA training event from Early Thursday morning through to late Saturday night. They aren't common, but they come up.

Working on my guy, had a bit of trouble deciding what I wanted to do. Ended up deciding I'd just wing it and pick spells that sound cool for the first few levels at least.

I'm gonna move the deadline up, just because we've already got a ton of great potential PCs and the selection process will be hard enough as-is. XD

Concepts are accepted until or on this Wednesday.

    I know that feel, KC.

'Cause if you leave it open long enough, you'll get SWAMPED with applications, and they'll all be difficult to choose from.

I have the next two days off, so expect a completed character from me before Tuesday night American east coast time.

Just so that I know if I'm connecting the dots properly or not, does the following provide the bare skeleton required for getting a Wild Elf into this adventure using the Ranger/Druid trait?

    Short draft background:
The Tree-Walker tribe has made their home on the fringes of Celene, where the Vesve and Gnarley forests meet. The tribe followed the rules used by the natives of the Gnarley Forest, in that they do not recognize any external group’s claim of authority over them, not even Celene, and that they depend upon guerilla warfare and stealth to deal with intruders. The natives of the Gnarley Forest, of course, do not trust the Tree-Walker tribe because they are elven, and thus they are assumed to be agents of Celene.

Craes had a normal enough childhood within the tribe, learning to live off the land and to use the land itself to protect him from most threats. As Craes reached the age of maturity, the holy elf of the tribe spoke of visions of Craes working with Druids in the hills, dealing with the undead. It took a few more weeks before they were able to provide Craes with enough information for him to seek out these unknown druids. Once they had the information required to seek out the people he should be helping, the entire tribe simply expected him to begin the search, and pushed him to comply with the holy man’s vision.

Once Craes found the Bronzewood Lodge, he watched them for a week before revealing himself. Both sides started with little trust. In the past several months, however, Craes has proven himself ot be a capable member of the team supporting Nogweir’s vision.

    Looks good to me.

Going to throw my hat into the ring. Wrote this guy with Golarion in mind but I think his backstory could be easily adapted to Greyhawk.

Okay, I've finished the crunch for my character. Now I just need to write the backstory.

    Here is his alias: Cuetzpalli

Check out the advancement spoiler near the bottom to see all the mechanical choices I made, and his planned advancement. He's going to have a good amount of skill points, eventually handling scouting, tracking, traps (after his Trapper levels), intimidation and maybe even Knowledge (Nature). He brings some serious beef to the table levels 1-3. After 3rd level he's good against undead. After 4th level he's a passable switch hitter, and after 7th level he's a dinosaur riding death machine.

Does Greyhawk allow slavery? If not is there somewhere else near the Azure Sea that does take slaves? What about gladiatorial type arenas?

I don't believe slavery is legal, but arena combat is pretty prevalent in the Free City.

There are the Slave Lords, of course.

The character looks good, though I'll give all characters accepted a more in-depth examination later. Am I right in interpreting his name as being pronounced "KYETspaly"?

Would it make sense that he was captured on the Isle of Dread by the Slave Lords, spent time as a slave, eventually escaped and made his way to the Free City? He then spent time there as a gladiator along with Spiny. In the Free City, he heard the teachings of Jierian Wierus and became his follower. Wierus uses Cuetzpalli as a bodyguard due his strength, intimidating nature and dinosaur pet. Cuetzpalli followed him to Diamond Lake, and has been doing his will there ever since.

Does that work for a backstory framework?

Chillblame here. Let me present Robert Melechant, Cleric.

This was a character for another game, but he should respec well.
The basic crunch is OK, I'll think up a backstory for him, and change his traits.
I'll also research grayhawk gods for an appropriate one. By tomorrow.

Edit pelor looks ok. Roberts domains will be sun and healing

That sounds good to me, Jelani!

Also, a correction to the list: Robin is a druid, not a ranger. My bad.

If 3.5 material is at least up for consideration, GM, do you have any thoughts on the Tome series classes, particularly the Binder from the Tome of Magic?

Links to the binder and their vestiges.

For anyone not familiar, the short version: the binder has a list of these pseudo-divine patrons called "vestiges." Once per day, you pick a vestige to summon, and it grants you a particular package of 4-6 supernatural abilities. This is more or less their only class feature, and there's a ton of cool fluff tied into it.

I do own that book, fortunately. The main issue with it is just that it is going to be weaker if not converted.
Here is a source that appears to have a good conversion. Alternatively, here is a free alternative. I would be willing to consider either's use--worst case scenario, some modifications have to be made.

Alright, got a character background worked out. Here's the cliff notes:

Brock was born to Coran and Mary Throuh. Members of a group who were sent by their king to settle a new village and help expand the borders of his kingdom. They choose the shadow of a dormant volcano, with lush land abound and gems in the mountain itself. They decide to set themselves as an independent city-state, feeling the land was simply too good, and wanted to share with no one else.

Brock grew up with a healthy love of wrestling and competition, something the now small city had brought with them. And his father taught him hunting, making traps and how to fend in the wild. But, as he grew older, Brock wanted to know more about his Dwarven heritage, something his parents didn't speak of, or discuss at any length. So, when he was of age and had everything he needed, he set off into the world. On a quest of enlightenment and discovery.

That forum conversion seems pretty fair, though I don't know if some of the crazier Pact Augmentations are necessary. I do like that Suppress Sign comes at 3rd rather than 2nd, since being forced to deal with the vestige baggage is one of my main draws to the class.

Anyway, if you're open to the idea, I'll roll one up.

DM Jelani: Slavery is legal in many places, just not the Free City of Greyhawk. The "Yellow Sails" or slaver ships, from the Pomarj (Just a little South of Greyhawk by sea) regularly raid the areas immediately around Greyhawk, and even have a presence in the Nyr Dyv (despite the fact that the shipping route between the sea in question and the Nyr Dyv is on the river that goes past Greyhawk).

Another place where slavery is pretty common is the Scarlet Brotherhood. They aren't really that physically close, though.

    Thanks!

Just realized I forgot to include Carina's skills in her statblock.

    She's fully updated now.

Incidentally, with regards to potential ties with other PCs, she wandered around a lot in her backstory: it's entirely possible she's met some of the PCs before on the road.

Or, rather, in the case of Robin, I can rework it so that she's trying to make amends for accidentally killing his horse, in order to start giving her ties to other PCs.

Sounds good; Robin's traveled a fair deal himself. It'd be within the realm of belief to say that he and Carina came across one another.

I wonder... would it be a good idea for Robin & Carina to enter town together?

It WOULD establish that they have a sort of history together... well, as long as you're cool with the idea that Carina accidentally killed his horse with her death knell ability.

I can make changes if necessary.

    Just keeping track of things...

  • Dang it! I haven't found any Paizo adaptations for Wild Elves.

Swapping out Elven Magic for Silent Hunter (or Woodcraft, but Silent Hunter fits the tribal theme I've defined better, I think) seems a pretty good choice. (Advanced Race Guide alternate Elven Racial Trait.)

Is it worth trying to alter the stat bonuses?

Standard (0 RP points) is +2 to 1 physical and 1 mental, and -2 to any 1 stat.

Wild Elves were +2 Dex and -2 Int. +2 Wis would suit my character better, but Wild Elves had a preference for Sorcerer (core d20 Favored Class) so +2 Cha makes more "historical" and cultural sense.

Does giving Wild Elves +2 Dex, +2 Cha, -2 Int instead of the High Elves' +2 Dex, +2 Int, -2 Con meet with your approval?

Edit: I should note that the obvious alternative is to just work with the core Elf attribute modifiers. I can do that with no real functional change to the build (effectively the Int or Cha goes up by 1, actually), I just have to swap where I put attribute build points a little. So, the difference on that point is more about providing flavor for Wild Elves than it is about my build.

Feel free to make that modification.

My character is pretty much complete now

Okay, here's a pretty complete version of my submission, with minimal expansion of the previous story sketch.

It is all in one post, so that you can copy this direct link to this post in order to see the material for review later.

I have not decided how to spend the Favored Class point, yet.

    Craes, Wild Elven Slayer

    Simple story:
The Tree-Walker tribe has made their home on the fringes of Celene, where the Vesve and Gnarley forests meet. The tribe followed the rules used by the natives of the Gnarley Forest, in that they do not recognize any external group’s claim of authority over them, not even Celene, and that they depend upon guerilla warfare and stealth to deal with intruders. The natives of the Gnarley Forest, of course, do not trust the Tree-Walker tribe because they are elven, and thus they are assumed to be agents of Celene.

The Tree-Walker Tribe worships an aspect of Solonor Thelandira, an aspect mingled with aspects of Obad-Hai and Ehlenestra. Their modified holy symbol is a simple arrow with a bone arrow-head and autumn leaves as fletchings. The tribe rarely has more than three Holy Elves at a time. Currently, there are only two. The older Shaman Farshol and the younger, and far more rare, Cleric Joohn.

Craes had a normal enough childhood within the tribe, learning to live off the land and to use the land itself to protect him from most threats. He took to this training, and seemed to learn the lessons better than most of the tribe members. As Craes reached the age of maturity, he had his eyes on Thora, the chief’s daughter. Naturally, Joohn had other plans for Thora, involving his own son who was still young enough not to be in the discussion himself, yet.

Amazingly enough, Joohn had visions of Craes working with Druids in hills that were nearly bare of trees. His Divinations found a group of Druids relatively close by, to the East, who are focused on dealing with a harsh threat. This effort took a few more weeks before he was able to provide Craes with the information required for him to seek out these unknown druids. Farshol was about ready to call Joohn’s bluff on Craes’ behalf when Joohn managed to produce this information.

Once Joohn produced the details, Farshol joined with him in the call that Craes needed to go provide assistance in order to serve the desires of Solonor. This united religious front led to the tribe gifting Craes with the best supplies that they had, in order to help him with his holy quest.

Not knowing exactly where he was going, Craes spent a full month looking for the Druids before he found the Bronzewood Lodge. He watched the group for a week before deciding he had arrived and revealing himself. Both sides started with little trust. In the past several months, however, Craes has proven himself to be a capable member of the team supporting Nogweir’s vision, despite his own lack of understanding in why he was called to help this group.

Character is done mechanically, but I'm still looking for a good link to Diamond Lake. Does anybody want to work on a background that overlaps?

A small correction: "Starry Eyes" grants an Insight bonus to AC, not a Morale bonus.

Huston, that looks good to me.

Vershan, one issue I noticed is that you forgot to shave off five points for your point buy. Otherwise, looks fine.

I used the alternate racial trait Dual Talented to get 2 +2, but I lose skilled and the bonus feat humans get.

Ah, silly me. I thought I checked for that, but it must have been a different PC. XD

Cuetzpalli is basically done as well. Let me know if I made a mistake or am missing something you want to see.

I think I'm gonna have to pull out of this one. I don't really know anything about Greyhawk, so I'm having a hard time coming up with an interesting background, and I haven't been able to settle on a character that seems like it would be fun to play.

I think I'll just read along with this one, there's already a bunch of good options for you to choose from anyway. =)

The main auditing process will take place after selection, for the record.

Also, this is half-correction, half question--I noticed Spiny has the tricks "Combat Trained (attack, come, defend, down, guard, and heel), Attack II". As far as I knew, a druids' companion generally had to start out with a single trick, and could learn more in time as the druid gained levels or made time to train the companion.

I'd be alright with the companion knowing the Fighting Purpose (attack, down and stay), since that seems pretty standard for a creature raised in the arena, but seven tricks seems a bit excessive.

I'm not necessarily nixing anything yet--I just want to make sure I understand this right.

Rynjin, I'm sorry to hear that. For what it's worth, I don't actually know Greyhawk too well, either. I'm using it as a default setting, and planned to slip in the occasional reference (I mean, what I do know, I'm sure gonna use), but most of what I've posted was garnered from Dungeon or Google.

Anyway, good luck to you. Hope you have fun reading!

EDIT: Also, Jelani, Spiny has Improved Natural Attack, which requires a Base Attack Bonus of +4.

I would be happy to help with Greyhawk references. I've got a bunch of old Greyahwk material in the other room.

If you want to ask for anything, I can try to find it for you, Rynjin. FYI, The Scarlet Brotherhood is a Lawful Evil Nation run by a society of "pure-blood" Monks who are out to prove and maintain their racial superiority (Suloise human is the race, IIRC). I thought given what you say about yourself in your profile you might find that interesting.

I'm confused. The Cudgel is absolutely the most Lawful deity in the Greyahwk pantheons. His focus is so extremely on Law that previous mechanical instructions have declared that Paladins of Cuthbert have to be more Lawful than Good, unlike all other stock Paladins. He's that aggressively Lawful. Heck, the most numerous branch of his clergy enforce his dictates upon his followers, using cudgels to reinforce the lessons when they deem it appropriate. A devout Barbarian of Saint Cuthbert just strikes me as funny!

That IS pretty interesting. I suppose I could put forward my level 1 version of Sun Xiao from the aborted Reign of Winter game (link, instead of the spoiler).

I just didn't want to toss out a recycled (for the 4th time now...can't catch a break with this guy) character. I'd have to tweak his Point buy down from 25 and drop the Campaign Trait, but he's pretty much ready to go for the most part. I can read up on the Scarlet Brotherhood and find a way to work that into the backstory...the important part of him is the philosophy anyway.

Not sure how I feel on the racism theme, though, but that's work-around-able.

Are there any deities comparable to Irori (self-perfection as the main virtue) and Achaekek (an assassin god, pretty much)?

    Thanks Huston!

Vecna is the most high-profile assassin god. Y'know. By "assassin god" standards. He's the NE god of secrets, undeath, murder, and magic. St. Cuthbert is one of his staunchest enemies.

It's been way too long since I've played with the core gods, and I've actually lost the PHB (I seriously have no clue how, I had two of the darn things), so I can't recall any monk-y gods off the top of my head.

Also, I should have posted this way sooner, but here's a map of Diamond Lake. It should give some vague idea of the locations involved.

The trait is meant to be somewhat ironic, yes--and indicative of just how warped Wierus's cult has gotten.

That being said, I've never been a huge fan of the barbarian alignment restrictions, solely because they make it hard to play 8-Bit Theater's Berserker.

EDIT: Also, since he ain't a cleric or nothin', it doesn't really matter whether he's True Neutral. Heck, even a Chaotic Evil guy can believe he worships Pelor as long as he doesn't expect spells from the dude.

I've got basic preliminary stats for Iordyne the half-orc summoner up. His history is still in progress due to my also not being a Greyhawk knowledgeable type. Here's the preliminary history layout; if anyone wants to toss ideas to fill in the cracks, go for it.

-at some point about 17 years back, an orc village is pretty much razed by a human militia during a recurring bit of back-and-forth border conflict. Iordyne is found as a squawking halfbreed baby in the wreck, and someone takes pity and has the tyke shipped off to an orphanage. I don't know quite enough about Oerth gods to make a guess as to what deity the orphanage would be dedicated to.
-the orphanage, while crappy, is actually a lifesaver for Iordyne, because while he almost definitely was too weak to survive life among orcs, at least the orphanage bullying he gets for being a weakling and a halfbreed isn't likely to kill him, just leave him humiliated and lonely. During this time he starts developing a vivid fantasy life to comfort himself.
-he runs away from the orphanage about age 12, makes his way to a city and spends some time living on the streets. Finds that he hates it there as much as he hated the orphanage. Ultimately winds up falling in with a very low-rent traveling circus; general odd jobs boy, though finds he has a knack for helping the animal trainers. Also discovers a bit of a magic knack from working with the carnie stage magician.
-after a couple years of this, the perpetually broke circus goes belly-up and dissolves completely, all the entertainers going their separate ways. The stage magician can't afford/doesn't really want to take on a formal apprentice, so Iordyne is left to head off on his own. But he keeps on practicing the little he's learned, and at some point while alone, far between towns, and hungry he discovers that his innate magic is manifesting in the form of creatures from the fantasy world that kept him company back in the orphanage days. (I.E., his eidolon and summoned monsters.)
-In the past year he's wound up in Diamond Lake, falling back on what he knows. Currently he & his eidolon hold down a booth in the Emporium freakshow; when not performing he does general animal wrangling around the place as needed. (There's always rats and two-headed cows that need tending.) In spite of the vague stability this offers, he still wants out, if only an opportunity would present itself. He's a frustrated intellectual at heart; loves books, can rarely afford the luxury of one, though. Likewise has taken a liking to observing dragonchess matches at Lazarre's when he has downtime. He's occasionally splurged and rented a set to give the game a go, but dreams of being a serious player with an expensive set to call his own, someday.

Anybody remember that scene from "It's A Wonderful Life" where the bankers are all watching the clock, waiting to be able to close their doors so no more customers can come in and demand money?

This is like that, except I still have two days. There are just too many good choices.

    *gulp*

    Background has been completed.

I went with the assumption that he could have the maximum amount of tricks for his intelligence, sorry I should have asked.

I think it's reasonable since it takes three weeks and a DC 20 Handle Animal check to train the Combat purpose. With his +4 Cuetzpalli has a 20% of making that roll, so it's going to take him maybe five tries? Not sure how to do that probability math. The point is, even if it took him five tries, that's only 15 weeks or like 3.5 months. Presumably he's had the dinosaur for at least a year, preferably more like 2-3 years. So he's had time to do the training. Then the Attack II trick is from the animal companion bonus trick.

Good catch on the feat though, totally missed that. I'll probably go for power attack instead.

Actually, Combat takes six weeks. Fighting Purpose (attack, down and stay) takes three.

That being said, I checked the FAQ, and it appears your assumption is correct. I'll have to remember that for my PFS druid, he's been making the Push checks like a sucker.
