That night though:

Astraden relays the bad news about not being able to find Filge. "We got to him too late. If I'd cast the spell right there in the shop there's a chance we could've tracked him down before he could put up any protections." She frowns. "Knowing he's out there, probably making even worse monsters, sucks."

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

Astraden:
There are some minor undead that could be created with small animal bones, but Astraden can't think of any use a man or creature like Filge would have for such a petty creation. Perhaps a very, very small wraith, but most tiny animals don't have the personality to generate such beings.

I'll get back to you on it when I can next post, which might be a few days—I'm currently in the fun frantic midterm fallout stage where I need to make up for everything else I procrastinated, so things aren't productive at the moment.

The Gateway Grove, The Isle of Last Resort

I can't get a proper post up today (due entirely to bad scheduling on my part, in all honesty), but I'll try to get information so the next post can be a worthwhile one:

The Gift:
Asking around, Eben yields answers from Toris, the friendly and very blatantly naive gnome aristocrat. "Oh, a gift goes without saying!" the gnome exclaims, running his hands through his hair excitedly. "I'm getting the Prince a lovely crystalline chandelier styled to resemble a bunch of cute little burrowing animals. I'm sure he'll love it! I certainly hope so—it cost me over two thousand orbs, and just about cleaned me out of pocket change in the process!" He throws back his head and laughs, the jewelry he wears sparkling in the lamplight

2,000 gp minimum from each of you. What the gift is can vary widely, ut traditional gifts include jewelry, exotic caged animals, bottles of rare wine, etc. That said, any one of you exceeding 10,000 gp will make you look like a real tool.

B&B:
Some discretion would be advised in entering such a 'low-brow' establishment. The [i]veil[i] might be appropriate.

It actually stands out that "Shrieking Sammi", the three-eyed girl who seems to see through illusions, has not been following you around this last day or so.

So, where's the group heading this evening? Heading to bed and heading out in the morning, or...?

When Eben relays the distressing sum:

Astraden flinches. "Two thousand? Well, it can be a used gift, right?" She pulls out her old mithral dagger, still notched where she hit one of the bas-reliefs in the Whispering Carin, still stained from whatever Smenk used to use it for. "Maybe I can increase the relative price by signing my name on it somehow? Ooh, that makes me think of a great prank - I believe there's a spell you can use to transport a specific object to yourself. We just need someone who can cast it for us."

Appraise: Can I give him my s&&+ty +1 mithral dagger as a gift?: 10 + 10 = 20

Heading to bed and heading out in the morning. I assume the whole group notices Sammi's absence? Maybe we should ask around for her before we go to Bits and Bottles. And yes, we'll cast veil before going in, to look like a family of five Alhastere commoners (Tanith, Cuetzpalli, Carina, Eben, Farrukh) and their pet donkey (Astraden). Someone else can be the donkey instead of her, but Astraden is adamant that at least one person has to be a donkey. Because otherwise people are gonna start realizing that the group named after having a specific number of members is going around town disguised as, that exact number of people.

I don't think I've ever actually had to use this in an emergency yet. You could say it's just taking up space." He removes the pumice ring of feather falling from his finger. "Kinda ugly, though. Smenk's Dagger is a unique reward from the Justice for Smenk sidequest, and therefore untradeable.

Astraden thinks the dagger would certainly suffice, though it might need a nice polishing. Mithral is a highly attractive gift, and a dagger, while not conventionally fanciful, would certainly match Astraden's attitude. Re-gifting is only tacky if they know it's a re-gift.

Probably worth pointing out that instant summons is going to cost a minimum of 1,910 gp (if we found a 13th+ level arcane caster that's doing spells-for-hire), or 2,275 gp if we tracked down a scroll. While playing 'Here's a gift, but TAKEBACKS! HA!' with Zeech offers its own amusement value, it's not something that's going to give us any financial savings over just giving up 2,000.

The group returns to the Deluxury (aside from Astraden, of course, who returns to her less illustrious inn) and settles in to sleep. Clouds are swirling overhea,d and everyone is in a real hurry to get indoors before it starts raining, so the streets are largely empty that night.

Carina:
Carina dreams of a long, gray river. She wields a long pole to move her boat along. Bloated, hairy masses bob in the water around the boat, and a low hissing reverberates in her ears.

It is not a nightmare. Carina is not frightened. A dull, idle curiosity has settled over her instead. She hears pained moans as the pole strikes one of the hairy masses, and only feels mild interest.

There is someone else in the boat with her. A shivering creature, wretched, small, with long, ragged hair obscuring its face. It cringes away from Carina as she moves around the raft, whimpering miserably. Carina is distracted, looking down at the pitiable creature with frustration.

The raft hits something. Carina loses her balance; the boat cracks into one of the hairy forms. The creature falls onto its back, the hair flying from its eyes.

It is Carina—a strange, warped, almost nightmarish caricature of Carina.

Carina wakes up.

7th of Harvester (September), Year 595 — Day 159 of the campaign.

Weather: 1d100 ⇒ 94

The boards of neighboring houses creak and groan. Wind whines and shrieks through the streets of Alhaster. The Deluxury stands strong, but the windows, rimed with frost, occasionally give ominous cracking sounds.

It is the seventh of Harvester, close to the beginning of autumn, and a biting, powerful snowstorm has settled upon Alhaster.

It is through this storm that the group must go on a delightful little shopping trip, veiled under both powerful illusions and mundane insulation. The streets near the Deluxury are pristine and merry. A few children run about, throwing snowballs and constructing forts and dungeons to play in. "Snow golems" are everywhere, like suspicious alleyway guardians. Watchers patrol in dark coats, glowering as those few shoppers willing to brave the cold make their way through the city.

Here, Iomandi's Wonders is having a sale on colorful glass baubles that release what appear to be tiny steam elementals—a trendy way to keep warm. Fifteen gold each.

The streets near Bottles and Bits, on the other hand, tell a somewhat different story. Here, there are the snow golems and snowball fights, but there are also huddling urchins and vagrants crowding by shop doors and under overhangs. The proprietors of those shops do not harass these people for the most part. Though it is crowded, the party sees no signs of any of these unlucky souls trying their luck in the wealthier parts of town. There are also very few Watchers here.

Here, Bottles and Bits is surprisingly easy to visit without being noticed, thanks to the combination of the heavy clothing, the poor visibility, and the empty streets. The illusions might not even be necessary.

Reminder of Iomandi's Wonders and Bottles and Bits. Which to first? Or would you like to split up?

Once again, brief little prompt: How is your character staying warm, if at all? Aside from the undine in the party, you're all having to suffer through 1d6 ⇒ 1 inches of snowfall.

Recap: The Banquet is scheduled for the 10th.

Remaining objectives:
- Extract Zalamandra from the Aerie (any heist plans have been delayed til after the banquet, though).
- Find a way to investigate Sinner's Sanctum, if possible.
- Meet with Lashonna.

Along the way to Bottles and Bits, before turning into a donkey, Astraden stops at a stall run by a very pale person of indeterminate species. She purchases a pair of grey wool leggings, which she puts on over her pants immediately. She also trades in her shoes for a pair of used leather boots with fur lining.

Can I just pay the marginal cost of a cold weather outfit minus a traveler's outfit, since she already has a cloak and a woolen vest? That'd be 7 gp. Also, Astraden can provide endure elements to anyone who can't cast it themselves and doesn't want to buy clothes.

I'd be fine with splitting up - if those going to Iomandi's to buy princely gifts have specific brooches or w/e they want the rest of us to buy at Bottles and Bits, they can give us a shopping list. We can probably resolve the scenes faster that way.

No, I don't want you to gain access to too much equipment. That could be potentially unbalancing.

That morning, Carina awakens with a start, covered in cold sweat and shaking. She blinks her eyes several times before remembering where she is--tucked into bed, snuggled up to Tanith's chest and safe, for the moment.

She takes a few breaths, trying to figure out what her dream meant...

Knowledge (Planes)?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

"...that was only a dream. Only a dream." She whispers to herself. Carina starts glancing around the room, looking for her smallclothes and the rest of her outfit.

Before the big hopping trip of the day, Eben pokes his head outside, mutters under his breath about how babysitting yesterday made him forget to buy some cold weather clothes, and then goes around 'borrowing' everyone's cloaks while they're having breakfast. Bundled up like this, head heads onto the streets to the nearest haberdashery. Half an hour later, just as everyone is finishing their post-breakfast pastries, he comes back in, looking like Eben just breakfasted himself, except instead of eggs, bacon, and pastries, he ate several other Ebens. He looks puffy, to be specific. As he goes around returning cloaks (to people who might not even have realized they were anywhere but hanging in their rooms safely), it becomes evident that he bought at least one of everything in the way of cold weather protection. So, padded tunic? Yes. Woolen cloak? Yes. Hat? Yes. Scarf? There's two. And then there's the collection of everything that had the word 'muff'. Earmuffs, hand muff (of the big and furry kind; honestly, it looks like he mugged a dowager), and something that goes directly around his head to cover his nose and mouth, because apparently two scarves weren't enough. "Alright," he says, tucking a lumpy shawl around him like a fussy grandmother. "Ready to go shopping."

Spending 16 gold on two cold weather outfits. Eben planned to go to both Iomandi's and B&B, just to comparison shop. But he'll go with the Iomandi's group for now.

@KC: If you post before I get a chance to again, I'll go with everyone to Iomandi's.
