"Yes, we should try to determine where these hobgoblins are operating from. I'll scout ahead of the party and try to spot any enemies without being seen."

Alezandu will stay about 60 ft ahead of the others (or closer if the forest is so dense that they can't see him at that distance), on the lookout for threats and doing his best to remain stealthy.

Don't forget that the others will only wait so long for us before heading further into the forest. I'm fine with a quick scout, but we should not take too long. Also, if there are hobgoblins lurking about, we really should warn the ranger station of that fact if they haven't been overrun already."

:: Rova 24 - Mid-Morning - Bridge in the Little Chernasardo River ::

Having found a path leading to... well somewhere, the group forms up to proceed down it and investigate. As you creep through the underbrush, Alezandu ahead scouting with the others behind, the sound of the river fades and only your movement and the sounds of small animals can be heard.

After about five minutes, Alezandu sees a clearing with hobgoblins in it. Returning to the main group he describes the clearing as about 40 feet across, with a small pond in the middle and rocks littered about. There are four hobgoblins, one in a breast plate with a sword and shield, two with swords, shields, and studded leather, and one with a bow and leather armor. Also, the largest wolf hound Alezandu has ever seen is there.

Updated the map link to 'Forest Grove'

EDIT - You are currently about 100 feet from the grove on the little path you were following. The two dark brown squares on the map are tents and the light brown square is a pile of full sacks.

"Wait. Slow down," Alezandu says, stepping forward. "What advantage do we gain by trying to lure them out? I'm sure they can tell the difference between a human stranger speaking Goblin and one of their hobgoblin companions speaking Goblin, so they'll probably realize that it's an ambush and get ready for battle. We should send our stealthier members to circle around through the forest and surround their camp and then attack from all sides. At least that way there's some chance we'll manage to surprise them."

Below is some info to consider.

I have added a new map at the top of the page called 'Forest Path'. The green line on the map is the lightly travelled path you're following.

As you can easily see, on the map there are a lot of trees. If a space is more than 50% covered by a tree then it is considered to have a tree in it. If you are in a space with a tree you get partial cover (+2 AC, +1 Reflex save) vs all attacks, 30% concealment vs ranged attacks, and a +5 bonus on stealth checks. Shooting through a tree also provides 30% concealment to the target. Spaces with a tree in it are also considered difficult terrain. The exception to this is all of the spaces with the trail line on it are considered normal.

”I’m fine with that plan, too.”

Are there any trees that look climbable for their archers?

Not useably so. They could climb the trees, but unless they cut a bunch of branches out of the way they wouldn't be able to shoot anything other than a crossbow.

I agree with Alezandu, taking the fight to them with the element of surprise may be more effective than staging an ambush. If they didn't hear our fight at the bridge, they will not be expecting anything to come past their allies.

Elyas will follow behind the stealthier members with either option, providing support but not trying to sneak up close to the encampment in his bulky armor

Also to address Alezandu's K(nature) check on the wolf. You know it is a dire wolf, simply a much larger version of a normal wolf. They prefer to target a single enemy, drag them to the ground and savage them, but will back off if they start getting surrounded. Their hides aren't much better protection than a normal wolfs but their bites are stronger.

I was waiting to see if the wolf was taken down before posting Falcon’s round 1 action. He would have flurried.

Round 1 flurry: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 1 = 24
Round 1 flurry Confirm: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 - 1 = 24
Round 1 damage: 2d10 + 18 ⇒ (9, 2) + 18 = 29

If the wolf is still up, he flurries again.

Round 2 flurry: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (12) + 6 - 1 = 17
Damage: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (3) + 9 = 12
Round 2 flurry: 1d20 + 6 - 1 ⇒ (1) + 6 - 1 = 6

Falcon spurs himself onward, crushing the wolfs skull as the others rain attacks down on the heavily armored hobgoblin, finishing it off.

With all the enemy dead, you have time to focus on the camp. The two tents are large enough for to hold about four people each, and look warm enough to protect you from mild cold The tents will keep you poorly sheltered down to -10C. They take 45 minutes to setup and pack up. The pile of sacks has a few axes, saws, picks and shovels leaning against it. One open sack contains potatoes.

You realize that if all the sacks contain food there is probably 500 to 600 lbs of food, enough to keep this small group of hobgoblins going for almost two weeks.

"This will likely be useful to everyone back at the camp. Can we carry it with us?"

Olivia will also open the sacks and take a closer look at their contents.

"I don't know much about hobgoblins but I feel there aren't many potato farmers between them..."

It would've been nice to capture one of them... oh well, Alezandu thinks to himself.

Realizing that the past couple of skirmishes have left him rather low on ammunition, he searches the dead hobgoblins for arrows and checks to see if the archer's weapon might be an improvement over his current longbow. He also looks for any maps, written orders, journals, or other items which might provide more information on the hobgoblins and gives them to Claustipher for translation. Finally, Alezandu looks inside all of the sacks to determine their contents.

In answer to Olivia, he says "Yes, these provisions and gear would be quite helpful. I can't carry much without compromising my usefulness as a scout though, and I think that's rather important given the number of enemies who seem to have infested these woods."

Falcon lets himself fall to the ground as the wolf dies, though he’s careful to make it clear he’s just resting, not dying.

”I can carry some things, once I stop bleeding to death.”

"Give all the bodies a once over and check for any loot made by human hands. Might give us an idea whether or not this group has recently raided any human towns."

Solace will help look over the bodies for the reason given, but will also keep an eye out for anything that might be useful to the group.

Falcon will help carry supplies. He recommends fashioning some sort of sling from the tents for the food and suspend the supplies from a tree near the bridge. They’re going to have to return this way and it will save them carrying all that food to the ranger station and back.
