Duncan dismissed the elf's apprehension, "Listen, let's not get too excited about being watched; I've dealt with this all my life. In fact, it may just another one of my fans."

As if to reinforce the notion, Duncan addressed the direction of the supposed voyeur, "You, whoever you are. Get back inside because it's cold here. I'll address all my fans once the games are over..."

Once Jibril pointed them out, Quinn was able to make out the hidden watcher. The person did not move or respond to Duncan's call.

Deciding to head off for now, Team Orra headed out to follow the footsteps leading out into the snow. They quickly lost sight of the watcher, who didn't seem to make any attempt to follow them.

The air was cold, but the wind had calmed and the sun was pleasant on their faces. Jibril was careful to monitor their pace, and ensure that they moved enough to keep warm, but not too fast to sweat. As the occassional bead of sweat froze on their faces, they realized the wisdom of his method. Truly, the secret to staying warm was staying cool.

They had less than twenty minutes before they lost the trail of footprints. However, every half-mile was another signpost, so they were confidant they stayed on track. An hour or so into the trek, they could see a dark blob directly ahead on the horizon. As they moved closer, they realized it was a group of people coming their way.

Jibril slung his bow on his shoulder and talking to the team behind him, "Another team?" but kept on walking making sure not to change pace but also to steer Team Orra about five yards to the right of the people coming.

Duncan pondered, "You don't think they're fans, do you? I mean maybe they let fans inside this challenge..."

He shivered and followed the elf, "Listen Jibril, if it's fans just let me do the talking."

Back and catching up. Rex probably would have gotten a used set.

Rex quietly trudged through the snow. It was colder than he was used to, but he had long since learned to tough it out through things. However, he stopped in his tracks.

"Probably another team...They aren't just going to let anyone wander in through a door."

female human Unchained Rogue/6 HP 45; AC 18 T 14 FF14; Fort+3 Ref+9/10(traps) Will+4; Init+4; Perception+11, Sense Motive +12

Quinn looked at the approaching group with suspicion. "Just because they're most likely another team, it doesn't mean they're friendly. Best to be on guard."

Following her own advice, the rogue lets her dagger loose from her wrist sheath and she tightens her grip on the hilt.

Sorry guys, I have a house full of sickies. Hopefully everybody is on the mend now. Anybody else sick of winter?

Team Orra continued their journey towards the cold challenge, albeit more cautiously. As the other group came nearer, they saw four half-orcs, all wearing long, scarlet cloaks. They were easily recognized as Family Zarfu (first seen here, we know they started at the moon door). Two of them were dragging the carcass of a polar bear between them, bearing it as easily as if they were dragging a doll. They wore very little in the way of winter gear, but seemed to be having no trouble with the cold. Their clothes and weapons were covered with gore and blood.

As they got close enough to hear each other, one of the half-orcs waved one meaty hand (gore-encrusted mace still in it), and shouted, "Ho there, tiny ones!! Enjoy this heat while you have it! It gets colder soon!"

female human Unchained Rogue/6 HP 45; AC 18 T 14 FF14; Fort+3 Ref+9/10(traps) Will+4; Init+4; Perception+11, Sense Motive +12

So sick of winter! 20cm on the weekend and we're supposed to get 25cm more on Thursday. Ugh.

Quinn looked at the dead polar bear and didn't know whether to be apprehensive or disgusted. The rogue wouldn't be joining the protesters anytime soon but she also didn't agree with killing for the sake of killing. But maybe the bear didn't give them a choice.

She returned the greeting by raising her hand, "Thanks for the advice. We will."

Yep. I already miss the Bahamas.

Rex did not seem too apprehensive upon meeting seeing the half-orcs. He had learned long ago in the arena that a calm head in the face of violence was something that just about any orc raised half-orc needed to survive. He had met many a half-orc in the slave pits, usually after being abandoned or sold by their human or orc parents. However, he also knew better than to ever underestimate their strength and endurance.

"Colder, huh?" Rex said casually, not intending to show the rivals any sign of concern. He gestured to the bloodstains and asked, "Aggressive wildlife?"

Male CG Human Unchained Summoner 5 (master summoner) | CMB: 3, CMD: 15 | F: +3, R: +3, W: +4 | Init: +6 | Perc: +0, SM +1 | Speed 30ft |

Duncan shivered, "Colder? What do you mean colder?"

He then bundled up some more and thought about calling his flame buddy but decided that it would be more cruel than killing a defenseless polar bear, at least that's what Duncan surmised.

The half-orcs stopped when they came abreast of Team Orra. "Aggressive? Yes, we are aggressive! But not so wild, this life, no, not anymore!" He seemed well-pleased with his answer, and it was hard to tell if he'd misunderstood deliberately or not.

Clearly deciding that Rex was their leader, another of the red-cloaked warriors said, "How many door-tokens you have? We have four! Yes, already four!"

How many tokens did they have again? Rex struggled to remember, though he was sure he had been told. Mind door? Earth door? Was there another one? Ultimately, he just shrugged confidently back at the half-orcs. "About the same..."

Jibril admired the close knit group of Half-orcs, they looked like a family. He wondered briefly how the found each other.

Jibril suddenly looked back at Rex, then at the half-orcs, and then at the horizon hoping he hadn't given Rex away by his surprise. If Team Zarfu thought it cold ahead we had better use caution. He didn't make small talk but nodded at the other team and trudged forward.

Assuming we're done with these guys...

The half-orcs weren't wrong - the landscape slowly got colder. The snow wasn't deep, and it was so dry that it blew this way and that in little flurries with each breeze. Walking wasn't that difficult; but the cold was starting to seep into them, despite their furs.

A few choices here. Total distance is 4 miles. At Jibril's encumbrance, that's 2 hours. If you go half speed, you get his +2 to your saves. But that's more saves (total number will depend on how much colder it gets). Also, I've modified the cold rules a bit, because they seemed excessively harsh to me. As somebody who's lived in some mighty cold places, I know how much good gear can improve your situation. These rules were obviously written by warm weather folks. :)

When you crossed paths with team Zarfu, you're one hour, so one mile, into the journey. It is starting to get colder, so time for another Fort save, DC 12, or take 1d6 nonlethal damage +5 for proper clothes, +2 from Jibril. Then let me know if you're going to keep going half speed, or speed up.

Jibril opened his fur a little to vent some of his trapped body heat. It was cold but he liked it here, in the open. He kept his ears perked ... Duncan was fidgeting but he seemed fine. It was great to have him on the team - nothing seemed beyond their ability with him around. Especially when he was complaining. Quinn's teeth chattered a bit but she seemed stoic to him, a one way mirror. She could see through him but not the other way around. He doubted she would ever be open with the team, never let a secret slip. She certainly wouldn't show how cold she was in front of Duncan. Although 'Rex' acted like he hasn't seen open sky before, he was an immovable object. If he was going to shiver the weather was going to have to ask nicely. The team was ok. Jibril kept an ear out for them and started to march harder. If he was the guide then he would get them through the cold quickly - for their safety and to get to the next challenge. He would push them to win.
He got curious and slipped out his new book, the hudu'rwhn, the peace of mind, and checked on his team. Each arrow pointed behind him but did the colour in the drawings change? tag Angie. I would like to use the book to give Jibril insight into the next round of fortitude saves if I can.

As they travelled and Rex became more acclimated to the cold, his spirits seemed to rise dramatically. "Well, this isn't so bad, is it?" He said as he stretched out and took in a deep breath. The cold air made him cough a little bit, but the cough swiftly turned into a hearty laugh. Looking around the open plains, he stopped and did slow examination of the area around. "It's quite beautiful, really..." Picking up his speed to catch up to the others again, he repeated quietly to himself again, "Beautiful, indeed..."

Quinn pulled her heavy cloak around her but it didn't seem to make any difference. The cold was seeping into her bones and making her miserable. She couldn't feel her feet or her fingers or her nose anymore. She felt like an ice cube.

Her teeth began to chatter almost uncontrollably. "Itttt's nottttt justttttt yoooooou, Dunnnccccaan. Weee sshoould gooo bbbaaack."

Ahead, they saw a small hut, a perfectly square wooden structure with a flat roof. It looked to be about ten feet square. The wooden door was ajar.

Jibril could see how quickly the cold seemed to be effecting Quinn. The book was a great warning but it didn’t currently bring him the calm it promised. He yelled against the wind, ”LET US CLOSE RANKS. REX, YOU AND I SHOULD MARCH SIDE BY SIDE. QUINN, YOU FOLLOW DIRECTLY BEHIND. DUN CAN, YOU STAY CLOSE BEHIND QUINN. Rex slightly regretted his deep breath from earlier and the cough and chill seemed to persist as they travelled onwards. However, despite feeling somewhat under the weather, he remained in reasonably good spirits for the rest of the trip. "It's not so bad. I'm sure we're almost there...." He kept saying as he followed Jibril's huddling directions and tried to encourage Quinn and Duncan, though his eyes showed concern for the rogue's dwindling condition. By the end of the journey, even he had to admit it had become almost unbearably cold, as his fingers and toes had basically gone numb. Still, he tried to be optimistic. "Yes! See! Shelter, we're almost at shelter!" he spoke through the chill, helping to rush the group towards the door.

Team Orra threw open the door and piled into the small hut, glad to be out of the cruel and cutting wind. Once inside, their breath puffed into small clouds in the cold, still air. Outside the wind shrieked against the roof, rattling the wooden boards, but they were sheltered in the dark , windowless hut.

After a moment, as their eyes adjusted, they saw that there were wooden benches built into the walls of the building. Straw had been thrown down directly under the benches, providing a little bit of insulation for their feet.

In one corner stood a short wooden pole, and a plain wooden box at on the bench near it.

In the middle of the floor there was a wooden circle, around three feet in diameter. It was pressed flush with the snow at their feet, looking somewhat like the top of a barrel buried in the snow.

In each of the four corners of the hut, a spy eye watched them.

Quinn, no lethal damage for you, but only just!

That awkward moment when Rex actually speaks Dwarven :p

Rex gave Jibril a confused look. He had heard him use the word before and had wondered what he meant by it. But he knew enough Dwarven to know that what Jibril was saying wasn't right. A rithis aingeal, a rithis. That's what Arthurs always said when entering the arena.

Duncan shrugged it off, "Maybe it's some dwarven dialect or something like that. Our previous teammate used to ask for the angels as 'boonie'."

He shrugged again, "I don't know but I can summon a water angel. It should be able to swim down and let us know what's down there. You don't think it's dangerous, do you?"

----------------
Duncan will summon a small water elemental and send him down to scout the area and report back.

Duncan's fingers were so cold it was difficult to make the complex motions needed to summon his water angel, but he succeeded. The dripping angel reared up out of the hole to get a good look at his summoner. The extreme cold affected the creature almost immediately - the outer layer began to freeze, forming a thin layer of glinting salt-frost. As the elementals "skin" was in constant motion, the frozen layer broke apart, swirled around, and collided again in a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of silver and white.

Alarmed, the elemental chastised Duncan for bringing it to such a cold place, then immediately dove down and out of sight.

After a moment, it telepathically told Duncan what it saw. The water was about twenty feet deep. The bottom was weedy, and there were only a few fish around. Within the reeds were three triangular stones. About ten feet away from the stones, hidden in the reeds, was a dark cave. The elemental didn't like the feel of the cave, and wouldn't go into it without some serious prodding.

Rex still looked skeptical, but he believed that they believed. Shrugging back at Duncan, he replied. "Perhaps. Maybe its some kind of local slang where you friend is from..."

Otherwise, Rex remained quiet as he watched Duncan summon and direct the poor creature into the freezing water. I don't envy you, pal. He thought to himself uncomfortably, as he wondered for the first time if these creatures had any free will. Still, he stood waiting for any news from the scouting.

Duncan relayed the information provided by his angel, "The stones are there. I could ask the angel to bring them up or to hook something to them if they are too heavy."

He lowered his voice, "What about the cave though?"

"Cave, huh?" Rex looked down at the ice hole, considering how bad it would be to be beneath the freezing water. "Why don't you have him bring those stones up here first. We can see if that's what we need and the cave is just bonus...or if its something we need to figure out..."

Jibril looked around the rickety shed at his team mates and doubted that they were going to get out of this without going for a swim. He started to go through his survival training ...
survival+mw kit: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 9 + 2 = 16
All he could remember was it was better to have dry clothes to get into after a cold swim ... and that he still had some shoe grease left amongst his survival gear.
"We have several ropes. Perhaps your boo ... aingeal can tie one to the tiles if it can't raise one itself. I will prepare in case one of us has to go in. Do we have anyway to start a fire? It would be good to have heat after a swim."
At that Jibril took his cloak off and laid in a small square like a prayer blanket with the sun image facing up.

Rex rummaged through his backpack and pulled out a piece of steel attached by chain to a flint rock. "Uh...that's what this is used for, right?" He asked Jibril, though from his expression it was clear he had no idea how to actually use it.

Duncan shivered again and asked the water angel to take the rope and hooks and wrap it around one of the tile-stones.

"Be careful and come back once it's ready for us to pull it out...."

The water elemental seemed confused by the talk of ropes and hooks. Understanding that its master wanted the strange rocks, it spun itself into a whirlpool, strong enough to lift the tokens off the lake bed. Positioning itself over one token, then the 2nd, then the 3rd, it soon had all three stones spinning within its body.

Team Orra waited by the ice-hole, watching as the water rippled, then exploded upwards, in a fountain of icy water. All three tokens surged up and onto the ice, very nearly knocking a few Orrans either into the water, or unconscious.

The water elemental then waited patiently, its "face" just visible in the exposed water at the bottom of the ice-hole.

"These are what we need, right?" Rex asked the others. He had really only been paying partial attention when he was on Jake's team and the whole, actually wanting to win thing, was rather new to him. "Are you sure you still want to go down there and look at the tunnel?" he asked Jibril. "I mean it could be useful, but I would understand why you wouldn't want to..."

Duncan was very pleased with his little friend and would have hugged if he wasn't made out of very cold water.

"Yes, that's what we want, right Jibril? I mean we can now just move to another door/challenge thingy or are the games over?"

He looked at Rex, "No, no need to go in the cave; this is what we came for, right?"

The rules don't specifically say about using the torches underwater, but it does say that an everburning flame can't be quenched, so I'll say you can use it underwater. Make a swim role, no negatives for cold yet because of the spell.

EDIT: What the heck? Where did J's post go?

Jibril flipped the three tiles so that they were all face up. He had a look about him like a child trying not to tell his parents that they forgot to make supper.

"This tile ... He points at 27 it has the outline of a little face in it and the style in not like our other two. This one ... he points at a detail on 43 has a little knee or leg just there and again isn't at all like our previous tiles. This last one His tone is getting more confident pointing at 61 has no details to say yes or no but, again, it is unlike our other tiles in style." He looks at his team mates, "I think we are meant to assemble an image. I wonder if Team Zarfu knows that. I think we need a particular tile and none of these are it. If the pattern continues there will be two or three more tiles down there somewhere and one of them looks more like ours."
Jibril pulls out the two team orra tiles ... Team Orra's Tiles
"I think we should look further.", he pulled out his everburning torch "Lux." and plunged it under water to see if it would stay lit. Angie?

He looks to Team Orra Please interupt here ... but If no one has anything to suggest...

Jibril started taking off his leather armour.
"Quinn, you look too cold already. You can't go."
"Dun Can, have you ever been swimming? Jibril caught himself... in deep water I mean."
"Rex. I think you may be a stronger swimmer then I but I think it might be best to have you up here. I'm going to tie a rope to my ankle.", and with a look of determined trust, "Would you hold the other end? I won't have much longer than three or four hundred heartbeats. Pull me out. Dun Can, can your Aingeal hold my torch? Tell it not to worry, the torch gives off no heat. Can you guide it?"
Jibril undressed to his underwear and smeared his body with the last of the wax and whale fat mixing it with the dried mud from the thieve's challenge. He smeered it in his hair and his faded forehead tattoo came out a little bit. He looked like a naked wet rat. He emptied his backpack to have something to put the tile in. Then he kneeled on his cloak on top of the sun symbol. There is a sun inside me. A blazing furnace in the core of me. Protect me from the cold of the abyss.
Jibril had prepared the spell 'resist energy' I was going to save it for the Fire Door. He will tie the 100' rope to his ankle. Before dropping into the water he will say the meditative focus words naming cold as the resist. - Angie, I PMd you.

Jibril walked to the edge of the fishing hole and smiled weakly. "Al shamshalif alk husu bi. Albard aleadui lays alk husu bi."

elven:
"With the sun as my ally the cold can not be my enemy."
Then without fanfare he did a little hop forward into the ice water.
