Mo'butu |
Initiative check 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Survival 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
I am cool with you doing the static init for us in the future, as it will no doubt save time, Mike.
Mo'butu, noticing the vine after it was pointed out to him, reached into his pack and drew out one of his magical scrolls. "A little fire will deal with this threat," he says to no one in particular.
Surprise round to pull Produce Flame scroll to be used next round.
Mike the GM |
I'm just going to go with static initiative for everyone. Makes things faster.

Initiative Order: (characters on same # act simultaneously)
18 - Ceer
16 - Corvus, Mo'butu
14 - Ku'ada, Nu'mara
13 - Chacall (please update your sheet to include initiative)
12 - Rheed
10 - Evil vine of death
Round 1: Fight!
If you want to start in a slightly different place, let me know--- but you can't start any "closer" than you are already positioned.
Mike the GM |
Ceer's bolt strikes true, but the fine seems only to crawl towards the party with greater urgency. As Ceer looks around, he doesn't notice any other dangers...
Ceer |
Ceer peers that the twisted vine as he loads his crossbow. He takes careful aim and fires a bolt at the fearsome creature.
Attack: 1d20 + 3
Damage: 1d8After firing his bolt he lowers his crossbow and looks around for further signs of trouble.
Perception: 1d20 + 2
Ceer takes a 5' step to I17
Mo'butu |
In the surprise round, I grab a scroll as in my previous post. Assuming that has been done, then I will cast the same.
Reading from the parchment procured from his satchel, Mobutu casts and his right hand begins to blaze. He takes a step forward and hurls a ball of fire at the assassin vine. "Stay Bwenge," he also commands his panther friend, not wanting her to get caught by the evil plant.
Ranged Touch attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Mike the GM |
Chacall makes a sign against evil (Evil Eye) and causes the semi-sentient vine to become filled with fear and doubt. 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3. It fails its will save, it will have a -2 penalty to AC for 7 rounds.
Nu'mara attacks with her longbow, but misses. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Rheed's arrow successfully strikes the vine, and it coils in on itself- then, suddenly, it lashes forward at Corvus (10' reach), attempting to slam into her and wrap around her torso. At the same time, vines within 30' of the central vine creep out from the undergrowth and attempt to grab Rheed and Corvus by the legs. DC 13 Reflex saves, please! The effect is identical to an entangle spell emanating 30' from the creature.
Vine's attack against Corvus: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14. Damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
The vine successfully strikes Corvus and attempts to wrap around her...
Grapple check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18. Corvus, please make a grapple check to resist being grabbed and constricted.
Mike the GM |
Mike the GM - I've been thinking about this overnight. Isn't this still the surprise round? That's why I simply walked forward and didn't engage. I presumed I could not be attacked.
You're right. Sorry, it's been a couple days and I don't think everyone is still on the same page, especially with some people being able to act in the surprise round, and others not being able to.
Corvus, Mo'butu, and Chacall were able to act in the surprise round. Mo'butu took out a scroll. Corvus moved forward. Chacall used the Evil Eye ability.
Then round 1 begins:
18 - Ceer
16 - Corvus, Mo'butu
14 - Ku'ada, Nu'mara
13 - Chacall
12 - Rheed
10 - Evil vine of death
Ceer attacked with his crossbow. Corvus has not taken an action. Mo'butu attacks with his scroll. Ku'ada draws and fires his bow. Nu'mara attacks with her longbow. No action for Chacall yet. Rheed moves and attacks. Then the assassin vine attacks Corvus, assuming it's still around after we determine Corvus and Chacall's actions.
Let me know what you'd like to do. (PS- You do not get an attack of opportunity when it grapples you.) Thanks for staying on top of things.
Corvus Kubaryi |
Corvus realises too late that she's moved too close to the plant. "Bother," she mutters under her breath as she readies her sword in both hands. "I'd better make this count."
With all of her might, she swings her sword in a wide arc for maximum damage.
Attack 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 192d6 + 4 ⇒ (5, 3) + 4 = 12
My AC is 14, so I presume the creature fails with it's attack
Grapple 1d20 ⇒ 15

(From above): Vine's attack against Corvus: 1d20 + 7; (7) + 7 = 14. (Success). Damage: 1d8 + 7; (3) + 7 = 10. Grapple check: 1d20 + 13; (5) + 13 = 18. (Success)
The vine successfully wraps itself around Corvus and begins to squeeze, causing her great harm... but it has clearly almost been destroyed by the arrows, spells, and Corvus' own sword.
Additional constriction damage: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14. Ouch.
Mike the GM |
You count as being "grappled" as per the normal grappling rules in the combat chapter. See the "if you are grappled" heading. You can take a standard action to break free or reverse the grapple with a CMB roll or Escape Artist. Unfortunately it is difficult to attack without a light weapon. I suppose you could punch it... but I honestly wouldn't worry too much. This thing looks pretty beat up.
Mo'butu |
Seeing the squad struggling, Mo'Butu releases the final blast from his fiery palm, attempting to light the vine.
Ranged Touch Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Damage 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Ceer |
I was waiting to see if the vine was dead or not before deciding what to do, but I think I'll just launch another bolt.
Ceer loads his crossbow and fires at the vine again.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5
Ceer looks around..."Did you guys see that??? I am suuuuch a great shot with this thing!" :)
Mike the GM |
As the arrows and blows and fire rain down upon the vine, it slowly releases its grip on Corvus and begins to creep away before finally collapsing in a heap at the entrance to the ruins...
Congrats, you each earn 115xp. Chacall, see the OOC thread.
Mike the GM |
In all seriousness...
Ceer does not observe anything particularly out of the ordinary or unexpected. As previously described, the vine was draped "above" the entrance to the ruins. Since it has now fallen down off of the small "ledge" it was previously hanging from (about ten feet up), some markings above the entryway are now in view...
Mo'butu |
Seeing the barbarian was looking very beat up, he proceeds to attempt to heal at least some of the damage taken from the vine.
Cure Light Wounds
1d8 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4 hit points healed by Corvus
Rheed |
Rheed lowers his bow as the vine goes still, returning the notched arrow to the quiver and moving closer to the entrance.
"And still, physicians insist that vegetables are 'the healthy choice'!" he remarks to Corvus, looking suspiciously at the surrounding undergrowth for any other sign of movement.
Are the marks of anything that I can read?
Yes, they say
Mike the GM |
Ceer is not able to read the runes above the entrance. Ku'ada is able to recognize that they are definitely ancient elven runes. He does not understand their precise meaning, but he knows that they are a warning of some kind, and he recognizes the symbols for "power," "fire," "curse," "gods," and "demons."
Rheed |
"Alright," Rheed says, moving forward, "Just let me take a quick look around first... no doubt this place is protected against intruders, and I would rather not trigger any of the nasty surprises waiting for us."
The ex-mercenary moves cautiously to the entrance, crouching down to inspect the floor for any loose tiles or suspicious runes before moving his attention around the doorway.
Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
"All clear," he announces confidently, "I guess I'm getting a little too paranoid."
