Do you have what it takes? The Freedomverse needs heroes are you one of those heroes?

Any may apply only few will be chosen. You don’t need any prior experience in Mutants and Masterminds. I would suggest to take a look at a 2nd edition rules book the PDF for them isn’t very expensive.
This will be taking place in Freedom City so if you have a chance to check the book out please do.

I have created an Obsidian Portal account Heroes of Freedom . There is a timeline and info galore on this site and more is added almost everyday.

Story, Background and possible development are more important than the mechanics of the build.

Your Hero must be a Hero!

Mutants and Masterminds 2nd Edition.

150 power points 20 must be spent between Feats and Skills

Power Level 9

I’ll keep a write up of all your characters on Hero Labs for Init and tracking abilities and things.

I would like enemies and dependent NPCs if you need help and want ones that tie into the story I’ll be more than happy to help Just PM me you should have two of each.

PM me and I can help you with your character.

If you can’t truly see your character in a large company comic book you should go back to the drawing board, I’ll let you know if I don’t think your character fits and you want to try your hand at something else.

This recruitment will run for two weeks and then I will try to select the characters within a couple days, I will be taking up to 6 heroes for this.

Post you are interested and then post your character once you have it all finished if you have question either PM me or put it in the thread I’ll try to keep an update every day or so of people who have characters entered and who are interested.

I'm going to hold you to the same standard as I hold myself: I expect you to post as often as is needed, adjusting to the pace of the group, as set by me. I plan to post at least once per day. When you do post, I expect you to push the action/story/RP or leave/pick up RP hooks. If our pacing changes to the point of negatively impacting your ability to keep up, I hope and expect that you will talk to me earlier rather than later. I promise to do the same if our positions are reversed, West coast mornings and nights will be my most active times posting.

To be honest I have never ran a Play by Post so if that is a problem for you I’m just putting it out there right from the beginning.

If you have any questions or if I missed anything please feel free to PM me or ask on this thread.

Do you know how much has changed between second and third edition? I am not sure that I still have any second edition books.

I know the stats changed I dont know what else has changed

Okay, I'll be modifying Waveform to add some more associated NPCS and submitting soon.

Interested and now going through my roster to see what fits!

Are you allowing feats from:

Mecha and Manga
Ultimate Powers?

Another point I want to help you guys try to use NPCs from freedom the city is full of stereotypical comic book characters, villains and NPCs so if you have an idea and need names PM me.

Ultimate power yes

Mecha and Manga I will have to look at each one individually

Sczarni

Got a decent start on a Super Soldier character. Got about 13 points left to spend and I have no idea what to pick.

Grand Lodge

Pathfinder Battles Case Subscriber; Pathfinder Maps Subscriber

I am interested, looking at the rules now.

I pulled a couple of thematically appropriate feat from it. Nothing game breaking. I'll list mark the feats with asterisks and type in what they do.

So, here's some of my fun stuff! I'm adding powers to the profile now

Super Soldiers some time struggle with getting around town so you might want to look into movement so you are not taking public transit to the crime scene.

BTW, Blacklite= Brox!

GODDAMMIT I added a bunch of stuff but all the data entry was lost because the stupid page reset itself. I'll add it all again later. Good news is the hard stats are there. Just got a lot of background to add in.

Count me in! As I said during the interest check, I've got lots of ideas and characters running around my head. I'll settle on something soon.

Almost done with my psionic paragon. The moment I can come up with a name, he'll be up for a look over.

I'll have to step into the closet of hero ideas and see what I come up with.. :)

Okay, here's Waveform.

history:

It sucks not having an origin story. Well, I suppose everybody has one, but mine is just like yours, "When a Mommy and Daddy really love one another..." You get the point. I suppose it's important to say that anything Daddy touches becomes as tough as osmium steel and Mommy can hit Mach 2.5. You know them as Barrier and Windshear of the Chicago Sentinels. Big time heroes.

My childhood wasn't normal. My existence was secret. I literally lived in a fortress. Daddy was known - he was a police officer doing crowd control when Doctor Positron's force ray exploded. Barry Reynolds. So I could only go outside with Mommy. And of course security guards, just in case. Still, it's what I knew and I had an alien tentacle beast as a pet. Twisty was amazing.

At eleven, I found that the bathwater kept sticking to me. At first it was fun, but then I found I couldn't control it. It took a week to get a handle on it. The first three day sin the lab. It wasn't surprising, Mom being an elemental type and Dad being telekinetic. Power training was just added to my list of classes, and that was the most fun of all of them. Until I found out that training was all I could do with my powers. No field-time for me.

After a few years of this, I used my teenage perogative to rebel. If I couldn't use my powers, I least wanted to go to school and have friends. After much discussion (yelling), they relented. It involved retrofitting a building with a secret tunnel to the Fortress, and some creative paperwork, but I was in school. I'd get to be popular, I'd go to parties, I'd ... get treated like the weird homeschooled kid.

I eventually found some friends among similarly exiled kids. Alex had a prosthetic arm from getting caught too close to a super battle and Lyssie was a big cape-groupie. I pretended not to care about her obesseion, especially when she talked about Livewire. Inside I was #Ick! because he was like my older brother, plus he was a real slob in real life.

Of course I was just waiting until I was eighteen and could join the Sentinels. I trained regularly, I had my costume designed, my name - well, that I couldn't pin down. I went through a dozen. WaterWitch, Tsunami, SeaB!!+!. Most of them were taken. Or stupid. As it turns out something happened when I was seventeen.

Alex and Lyssie and I were walking home from the movies. There was a bit of an awkward silence because A&L were on the brink of becoming a couple. All three of us knew it, but nobody wanted to say anything just in case it messed with our trio-mojo. I turned around started to talk, "You two should just ki... DUCK!" A fire truck was hurtling down the street when a camaro blew the light and the two became a tumbling hunk of metal. My training kicked in, "Call 911" Behind the truck, two more and an ambulance were blocked in because of the wreckage. They tried to get traffic to move, but everybody was gawking.

It was then that I felt the heat behind me as the burning building two blocks down blew out the lower windows. The fire hadn't gotten to the upper stories yet and you could hear the screams. I ran, zipping up my hoodie to cover part of my face as I went. A surge blew off a fire hydrant ahead of me and I swept into the water. Then it swept me forward as I flowed up the next building and across into the burning one. I felt the presence of people by feeling the water in their blood. Racing through, I burst into their rooms and swept them up in my wave and dousing the fire at the same time. Four adults, two little kids, a baby and a cat. As I set them down, one of the kids couldn't stop coughing. It wasn't my water - that was too oxygenated for somebody to drown in. It must be smoke inhalation.

That's when Mom showed up and boy was she mad. As she flew in, I flwew the boy up to meet her, "Ground me later, he needs a hospital, Stat!" She took him off. By then, everything was claming down. The fire was out, people were saved and there was some sort of cheering about something. I was in shock when I saw Alex and Lyssa come by. And a news van. The reporters were asking me things and everything was going way too fast. In the adrenaline rush, If orgot my PR training. I said that my name was Waveform, knowing that it was a stupid name but the only thing that hit me. That's when Dad pulled up on his motorcycle and came to my rescue. He took over the press conference, and I was the latest Sentinel and their legacy.

Alex and Lyssie were shocked, but cool. They were sworn to secrecy under threat of memorywipe and I spent days telling them everything I couldn't say before. With them dealing with all the changes in me, they bonded and became a couple.

Being on a superteam is the coolest thing in the world. Being on a superteam with overprotective parents is the worst thing in the world. Everything I did was too risky for them. Ther were constantly breaking plans to check on me and it was hurting the team. After six horrible months, I was eighteen and I left. Alex and Lyssie were both going to school in Freedom City. So I decided to tag along...

The Sentinel

Info:

Journal Entry
"There's been a struggle inside me. Between my strict religious upbringing and the gifts that have been laid out before me.... The lines between god-hood tends to blur. Is this meant to be a test from Allah? Lately, with everything I have seen, I am starting to believe that it was all a lie. God, godhood. Forgive me, Allah. It's growing harder to keep faithful through out this... ascension. How can I stay a faithful servant if I am becoming a god myself?"

Aashif al Hazred, aka The Sentinel
Having moved to America at an early age, Aashif's life was like every other american boy. High school football, barbecues and cookouts, apple pie on the fourth of july. His family's american dream came crashing down at age 16.

He was on top of the world. Seemingly dipping and dodging out of the way as people ran up to tackle him. "I'm gonna be a legend!" he thought to himself. He could hear the cheers amplifying louder and louder, driving him on. "70 yards! A Legend!"
TOUCHDOWN! He turned around to face the crowds and he could hear them loud and clear, pulsing in his head. What he heard slowly became apparent to him: They weren't cheering. The crowds were yelling and jeering at him, disgusted by what they just saw. Aashif was confused. The shouts grew louder. "Freak!, "Mutant SCUM!"
Scattered throughout the bleachers lay his opponents, flung from the field and knocked out with the blow.
"I...I was going to be a l-legend...."

Ten years later, Aashif's life has finally returned to some semblance of normal. Having left his position as professor of philosophy and theology at the Claremont Academy, he has moved on to Freedom City with hopes to start fresh, free from his teen crime-fighter past.

Duncan Summers (Raven I): Confidant, Role model, Headmaster of Claremont Academy.

Personality:
Known for his calm demeanor, Aashif hides a horrible temper that he must keep in line or lose control of his powers.

Currently:
Currently in his late 20's living and working in Freedom City.

I do not want to run a teen game but you can see some great examples of Teens running with non Teen Heroes Captain Marvel, Firestorm, but a strait up kid I don't think would really work.

I now want to stat up the bumbling side kick as someone who unkowingly has incredible luck based powers. :)

dot.

idea:
1) a kid (somewhere between 10 and 14) who discovers he is to be the next Sorcerer Supreme. Picturing kid who rides a skateboard and wears a robe and hat a la Mickey in the Sorcerer's Apprentice. He carries a giant tome of spells and a staff. I really do see him as a bit of a kid!Steven Strange without the dramatic flair and a healthy dose of snark.

2) Another sorcerer kid (or adult if kids are a no-go), but this one is more like Ilyana Rasputin (Magik). He received his powers through darkness and every spell is a battle between the forces of light and shadow within himself. The Grimoire has been handed down his family line for generations, each learning its dark teachings in the hopes that, eventually, will come the time to unleash the Unmaking and end the world. Gavin didn't drink the kool-aid. Instead, he sees his powers (dark and evil though they might be) as a tool to do profound good. His family and powers may stem from the darkest horrors of the other Dimensions, but he doesn't have to be.

3) A martial artist. He's been raised form childhood by his rich uncle (who ignores him) and pretty much lives alone. But, he's the reincarnation of demon-ninja who is an eternal cycle of death-and-rebirth with three other characters (an arch nemesis and the woman who came between them). Powers would be classic shadow-demon-ninja type stuff (think Shadowcat during her time under Ogun's power). This time, though, the demon is determined to break the cycle of redemption by becoming the hero.

4) Ares. He's the actual, factual, greek god of war. But, he's only just waking up from his slumber. Sort of like how Thor used to be back int he Silver Age. He's this guy who found an axe somewhere and that woke up the memory inside him that he really is the greek god of war, Ares. And, now, whenever he holds the axe, he becomes Ares. I can also go the other way on this, and he's just all-god-all the time, but he's waking up sort of like in Percy Jackson. If Ares is taken, I can grab a different god from Sumerian, Roman, Norse myth, or anywhere else that's more convenient. Thinking he doesn't know how to handle being Ares and a human. He's got a wife and kids, stable job, and a house in the suburbs. He loves his family, but he hates his life over all. He's neve understood why, until he picked up the hammer.

lemme know if any of those ideas sound plausible.

I miss that game. Good times.

Thought about Twitch, but I think his main RP hook doesn't work in an adult unless he's either himself a crook or just really stupid. Easy enough to make a speedster with seizures, and I do like powers with side-effects, but probably not the same guy.

Sczarni

I thought saves were capped at pl+5 (14) total??

Additional fluff for Waveform:

complications:

Driven to protect innocents caught up in superbattles.
Fear of not living up to her parents example.
Joy and Fear at starting over away from home.
Secret identity. Jessica Richardson.
Annoyed at polluters.

Associated NPC's:

  • Alex Spalding. 18. Student at the University FCU, major undeclared. He wants to study History, but he's afraid it's impractical. Knows her Secret Identity, dating Lyssie. Has a prosthetic arm.
  • Allison "Lyssie" Stafford. 18. Student at the University FCU, Engineering major. Knows her Secret Identity, dating Alex.
  • Barry "Barrier" Reynolds. Hero with the Chicago Sentinels - Public identity. Reinforces anything he touches to incredible hardness. Can also charge an object to stay tough for a few hours, but it is immovable until the charge fades. Ex-police, carries a baton and shotgun. Rides a motorcycle to get to crimes (and uses it as a weapon sometimes). He's the warm one of their family. Jessie can almost always get him to bend.
  • Laura "Windshear" Richardson. Hero with the Chicago Sentinels - Secret identity. Air elementalist. Flies at incredible speeds and uses air as a slashing attack. Deflects physical projectiles. She is a perfectionist in costume and outside. She cares, but she applies her own high standards to Jessie, which leads to a a strained relationship.
  • Twisty. Alien tentacle beast. About 15 pounds. Jessie's pet. It's green and photosynthesizes. It doesn't need much care, but it's very affectionate towards Jessie.

Combat role:

Waveform prefers to avoid fighting when it's possible to avoid it, but she'll dish it out when necessary. She almost always does non-lethal damage, and so far she hasn't needed to kill anybody. Bystanders are always something she pays attention to, and when possible, she'll get them out of the area, or move the bad guy away from innocents.

Correct besides toughness saves which are capped at power level without trade offs, why?

Off the top of my head, here's some background. I have more details floating around that I might add later!

Origin:
Trevor was a quiet, but highly intelligent child. The only child of noted scientist and researcher Dr Edwin Reece Campbell, and Marjorie (nee Franklin) Campbell, Trevor grew up in suburban Hanover, near Lee and Columbus and did all the things young kids did. School (where he excelled), playing in the back yard with his dog Gunner (beagle), going to self defense classes at Master Lee's on Greeley, playing with the neighborhood kids and going to the park. What set Trevor apart from the other kids was his interest and facility with computers. Trevor was a prodigy when it came to the intricacies of building and upgrading computers, and by the tender age of nine, he had built a top-of-the-line gaming computer. Not content to build using off the shelf components, Trevor assembled all the components by hand. Right around the time he hit high school he started to withdraw from socializing, spending much of his time in the library or in his father's workshop, sometimes helping his father with research and building newer and better devices. This willingness to work with his father would be the cause of his transformation.

Trevor was working with his father on a particle motion generator (teleportation device), which operated under the premise that if particles can be made to move "in between" light; that an effective brand of "teleportation" can be achieved. In a freak accident, the generator exploded, and Trevor was doused with altered "shadow" particles. These particles fused with, and altered Trevor on a genetic level. Trevor remembers little of the accident, but when he recovered, he found his skin was altered to a flat black color. From there he discovered that he was susceptible to direct sunlight, but was able to teleport with ease from one shadow to the next. Trevor spent the next 10 years honing and building on his powers, discovering new and interesting methods of manipulating the darkness that now lurks within him. This was at the expense of his relationship with his mother, Marjorie. Terrified by his appearance, and frightened by his amazing powers, Marjorie slowly withdrew from her son, leaving him to be cared for by the doctors.

Trevore recovered in record time, and tried to go back home, but Marjorie was too afraid to accept him. He lived at home for two months, avoiding his mother by working on a plan late at night. Building a computer business, Nightwarez, and charging top dollar for his ingenuity, Trevor made for himself a respectable income. His next move was to slowly excavate a small base of operations, 500 feet under Freedom City's Liberty Park. (Directly under the bandshell to be precise.) Thus was the Twilight Hall made, with none the wiser.

Finally, Trevor established a number of PO Boxes for himself and some blind doors for an address. One in particular is a favorite of his. There is a warehouse in West End, with a door that opens to three blank walls. From inside that closet sized room, Trevor can teleport to and from Twilight Hall, and accept deliveries from Peapod, and the local pizza place (Best deep dish in Freedom City!) without raising too many questions.

Trevor now monitors the city, using his super computer in the Twilight Hall and tapping into the many surveillance cameras throughout the city to pinpoint trouble spots. Trevor has two black cats (Cleo and Ramses) to keep him company, a wide array of online contacts to call upon and his formidable powers to combat crime!

Correct. Are you okay with the Online Research feat?

Yeah that one is totally fine

Sczarni

That is total bonus for save, correct?

So if your Con is +4, fort starts at +4.
So for example, you could buy Will & Ref to +5 each, spending no additional points on Fort, and have it capped?

No each save is capped at +14
Once again besides toughness

@GM: so, what general feel are we talking? Silver Age? Iron? Bronze?

I have a bizarre penchant for going on the darkside of things at times, and I want to know how far I can go.

@ Dragon
So it is a mix of Modern Age with Iron Age it has its gritty times and shades of grey but you guys are heroes at the end of the day.

Origin:
After the last Grue invasion, a captured Grue Metamorph was being studied at a secret lab to try and find the source of and a way to counter their shapeshifting powers. Nate was the security guard on duty when the Grue attempted an escape. During the attempt, Nate was exposed to the collected alien samples and gained some Grue shapeshifting abilities in the accident that destroyed the lab and killed the Grue prisoner and the lead scientist working there. Now he uses his new powers to fight crime.

Super Secret Origin:

The accident that destroyed the lab actually created a chimeric human-grue hybrid of Nate, the grue, and the lead scientist Dr. Oliver. With an somewhat unstable physical form, and a potentially unstable mental form as well, the two men are now tied to one another in a strange symbiotic relationship. They can’t survive if apart for too long, but the unstable nature of the meld and their somewhat different personalities mean they can’t be together for too long either. This is represented by a couple of Power Drawbacks.
Hunger represents the fact that Nate and Dr Oliver must join together in gestalt form daily or grow weaker.
Involuntary transformation represents that the merger of the gestalt form is unstable and may split apart under stress.

Character Backgrounds:

Nate entered the army after school and after one tour left the service to join the police. All his time in the army and the police put quite a lot of stress on his marriage. Just a day after his wife and daughter left him, he encountered a man who has beaten his wife and child severly. Nate’s response went too far, and he was disciplined for excessive force and he chose to leave the police rather than drag out a long court case. He was recruited to work security which ended up with him working at a secret lab performing research on a captured Grue. The lead researcher was Dr. Edward Oliver, a biologist specializing in Xenobiology and Genetics. He was trying to find the source of the Grue shapeshifting abilities so that they could be detected and perhaps neutralized. When the Grue managed to escape it restraint and threaten the doctor, Nate tried the neutralizer that the doctor had been working on. It didn’t work as intended and instead it ended up scattering the Grue’s cells and rebonding them to the doctor and himself, which then caused their own cells to scatter and intermingle.
When rescuers reached the lab, they found only a very confused Nate who had a limited memory and coherence. After being discharged from another job, though at least this time with a severance package and a strict non-disclosure agreement, he noticed that he often had strange thoughts that didn’t seem like his own. Then when a mugger attempted to rob him, he also discovered that he could change his shape. The man fled in terror from the particularly fierce bear that had suddenly appeared. The next morning he awoke to find another man in bed with him! It was Dr Oliver. He had not died, but had been absorbed for a time. Dr. Oliver discovered that they had come to form a chimeric symbiotic organism due to the introduction of the unstable Grue genetic material. For now, they work together to fight crime and find a way to treat their condition.

I'm working on a cold-based hero, Sub-zero, inspired by this art.

Dotting for interest - I'll be pitching Menhir - The Standing Stone

Will be o'er the weekend before I can get the crunch nailed down.

Paging through Freedom City, I see Steve Kenson stole the idea I was working on for an epileptic speedster. Entirely his fault for getting it years before I did. :)

Watcher, how would you feel about an undead PC? Either a ghost or some kind of very well-preserved revenant type? Powers uncertain, but personality is generally upbeat and positive. Yes, he's dead. but he's come to terms and tries to live a fairly ordinary life. He might not have moved on because of some nasty ritual that stole his afterlife or something to that effect, or just for reasons still unknown, but it doesn't really bother him much. He'd be fine hanging around forever.

Alternatively, or maybe together with previous: successor to the mantle of Light-Bearer? Thinking some well-intentioned guy in IT or accounting who was working, unbeknownst to him, at a subsidiary of Grant Conglomerate. He found out something illegal was going on and wasn't careful enough when he gathered evidence to turn over, so the bad guys managed to tie him up in legal knots for ages and destroyed his reputation. Ended up star witness in a few trials, but tainted enough that nobody wanted to hire him. The Albright Institute took him mostly out of pity, but the Langston Albright took a shine to him. Would be a polite, earnest solid citizen of strong values type. Just the kind of guy to be a champion of light.

So I am not sure how my math or even some of the rules work but here is Golem. He is basically a ghost, sorry Samnell, who creates bodies out of the astral ether and animates them. If necessary he can also make them return to the ether violently.

Origin:

Praxiteles was a Greek sculptor in Athens prior to Alexander conquering of Greece. His work was famous through his era, but he always felt that the materials he had to work with were too limited. His imagination, he once told a philosopher by the name of Plato, was much more vivid than any object of marble or wood his hands could create. Despite his grand success in Athens, Praxiteles was constantly trying to find a better medium to work with, but for most of his life it eluded him.

During his work he was approached by Sephina, a slave owned by Garcinon, a Patron of Plato and given an invitation to dinner at his villa. Praxiteles was taken with Sephina and after some discussion, purchased her from Garcinon as a model and muse, in return for a statue of the Patron himself . Sephina however, turned out to be much more. She was from a line of witches and herbalists who had uncovered many powerful herbs for healing the body and waking the mind and she provided these to Praxiteles, expanded his imagination. The herbs, and the magic behind them, unlocked something in his mind and soon he became able to bring his imagination to reality, creating intricate objects of exquisite detail.

These were never seen. Praxiteles was scared of what happened to him and asked Sephina to explain what happened. She took him to an ancient witch, Agamede, a descendant of the famous witch in Lesbos, who was also Sephina’s grandmother. She explained that he had tapped into another world and could draw material from that plane into this one, in whatever shape or material he desired. There was a price however, for every time he drew this material pieces of him were drawn back into the other realm. Praxiteles stormed out, not wishing to here such a foul curse or to believe in it.

The curse however was real, and soon he found himself getting weaker, lighter and unable to work as much. He could not stop creating and eventually he was found dead, for unknown reasons, in the grounds of his small estate, several pieces of work unfinished, the few pieces he had created from his imagination however, vanished and none other than Sephina or Agamade knew of their existence.

His death however, was not the end. His spirit entered this new plane from which he could still see reality, but not interact with it. He spent years observing the world before discovering that his ability to create objects of art had not disappeared but in fact was strengthened by his presence in the ether. He also found that objects he created could be animated and controlled by him, given him a quasi physical body he could “ride”. Over the next century he mastered his ability allowing him to create a golem, a living statue. Over the next 2 millennia he lived and died many times, his adventures as both an artist and teacher have been lost to history. Only in the most recent years has he taken a more active role, realizing the emergence of superhumans has given him brothers and sisters he never new existed. Now he has created a golem of flesh named Tom Praxis, professor of Art History by Day, and Golem, the Unliving Defender of Freedom City.

@Black Dow Good to see you can't wait to see Menhir

@Samnell Im not sure about and undead hero for the simple fact that there wouldnt be much outside role playing as I see it unless you can design some and have a great explanation of how and why you are interacting with the living besides when you are fighting crime.

The mantel would be fine

Spoiler:
just so you know there is no Labyrinth that roll has been taken by others just an FYI

@Taenia I like the idea its pretty cool now I see how an undead can be a hero Take a look at the Characters on the Obsidian portal and maybe you can find an NPC or two you can have had prior interaction with.

I'll work on getting or editing art and tweaking my background.

p.s. since you mentioned Hero Lab, did you want my .por file if I get accepted? I might as well keep you from having to re-enter everything, since I use it as well.
