Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Hey everyone, I'm having eye surgery on Wednesday (cornea transplant) and will be out of commission for at least one week, possibly longer. It all depends on how I heal. Please bot me as needed. Your new rebel has offered to relay information should something important happen that you need my input on :) I will be going dark on Tuesday at noon.

@Fabian: As I recall you weren't impressed with Hob being an Instructor Archetype (trades out class abilities for follower and teamwork feats). If I bring him back do you want me to remove the Archetype?

Alternatively I can knock up someone new?

Well, I don't like the follower bit since I don't want you having to control more of than your main PC (and a familiar) so your 'abilities' would be wasted.

Feel free to replace or remove the archetype or keep it if you want but know that you won't make full use of it.

Make sure Hob is 9th level with associated WBL.

You know this doesn't excuse your PCs from dying. :)

Seriously, are you getting both eyes done at once?

I can't believe you'll be 'blind' for that long.

Is this a Canadian procedure? :)

I hope it all goes well and we'll be here for when you're ready to come back.

Yes, it's a Canadian thing. When we turn 40, we automatically have our eyes replaced with cybernetic eyes. There's a 20% discount if we do both at the same time. The only downside is you have to stay in an efficiency for a week after, and they never have wifi.

But seriously, let's talk poison! I've never used it before (RPG or RL), as it's pricey. Coming in at a high level - what do you think? Coat those knives with nasty stuff? Is it worth taking 1-2 slayer/rogue tricks on?

No experience in RL but it's not good in Pathfinder RPG. :)

It's too expensive and you don't get enough bang for your buck.

I think the way you are going, you might be better off with an unchained rogue. I know it will be like Vi but I think it's better mechanically.

Others want to weigh in?

The only poisoner I've seen that looks like it might work is Eldritch Poisoner

Poisons are still a bit of a joke... I thought to make a poisoner of my NPC, but ended up thinking it's still only really useful in story-telling setting. In combat... meh. Either way too expensive, the DC is too low to be reliable or it just takes too long to do more than slightly debuff an enemy that fails its safe (because it dies from something else before poison has a chance to get that far).

Female Human Inquisitor(Infiltrator)/10

Action 1:

Forvian wrote:
“How about we lay low until you all come back out?”

Noravia nodded, "That would make me feel better."

The inquisitor went over to Rizolla and put a gentle hand on her arm. In a soothing voice she said, "Rizolla, I know you can understand me on some level because we're friends. Ves does not belong to you. She is a part of Caleb."

Noravia turned to Ves and said, "Maybe it would be better if you became part of Caleb again. That way, there will be no misunderstandings between Caleb and Rizolla when they can't reason."

Before going back inside, Noravia looked into Caleb's blank eyes and said, "Caleb, you need to stay with Forvian until I come back." She took his hand and put it on Forvian's arm. "Stay." She vainly looked for some understanding.

Jillian watched as Forvian talked with the silver raven officers? Is that the correct way to refer to the group?. As usual, she stood off to the side, in a shadow, apart. Her black clothes and hair, and dark skin, helped her blend in with the shadows, and she was comfortable there. Jillian was small and lean, and the black-painted heavy shield and longsword she bore looked overlarge to the point of ridiculousness. Like a child wearing her mothers shoes, only deadlier. However, it was apparent by the ease with which she carried both items that she was more than capable with them.

As the short-haired woman rattled off her requests, Jillian stepped forward, nodding. "Hob and Tillia, I know where they are." Her voice was high, almost childlike. I can probably get the scrolls, but I don't know if Elsbeth can come straight away; she's on the other side of the bridge. But I'll get a message to her. I'll be back soon. Is there anything else?"[/b] she asked, before running off to fetch help.

Hob isn't ready yet. I've started working on updating him. I'm hoping to finish it off tonight.
Ves blinked as her wounds finished healing "Yeah. Maybe. If Caleb's mind is gone my sisters will be pushed to the limit holding the Cage shut. They'll probably need all the help they can get." She hesitates "They won't have any memory of what happened while they were out, will they?"

Quite OK with having people hide somewhere close... also, if Angie doesn't want that caster/nuker cleric concept perhaps I will build that for Eirik's backup character, in case now is his turn to be struck down for an extended period. Got quite interested in the build ;^)

Action 2
Hob looked at the door with trepidation. The thing inside had taken down two of the Silver Ravens - and damn near more - and barely taken a scratch... before it had hours to prepare. He tugged on his beard, smoothed his hair, spat and got ready.
"Right." Said Hob "For those o' you who don't know me, once I start movin; I'm not aimin' to stop. Takes me a month of Toildays to make prep's, and they don't generally last more'n a few minutes."

Ant Haul
Bull's Strength (self)
Cat's Grace (self)
Defending Bone
Magic Weapon (Greater) on Hammer

Of these I think he would have used Ant Haul, Magic Weapon, Ablative Barrier and possibly Defending Bone house ago when they first set off.
He is prepared to cast on others if he knows they need it.

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Hob, you still rockin' that Wizard Eye thingey you used in the fortress? If so, might use it to scout out the sewer passage we ignored the first time (when we are still near the entrance) and then perhaps peek into the battleground room itself.

Yep - but it turns out it doesn't have darkvision :(

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Ah. Not that useful here in that case, then; likely not worth to just peek into the room since the door is shattered anyway.

Are you casting all those?

And here is one of the issues with high-level play. Too many buffs!

I'm very tempted to limit the number of buffs on a person (and on a weapon) to... say two active buffs.

However, I realize that this may weaken some classes.

Thoughts?

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Well, Hob's weakness is that once those buffs do expire (which they will do at about the second battle) he'll be a lot weaker since he can't possibly recast *everything*. Or if he gets hit with Dispel effect that can peel off more than one layer of buffs... But for the next minute or two, he's a beast! I think it's a decent tradeoff.

Hob wrote:

Eirik nodded and settled in, eyes and ears peeled. The enemy had had a breather like they had, but the monk hoped she couldn't repeat her earlier performance, considering the amount of magic she had just expended. Although she was a devil and her kind were known for being able to conjure more of their kind...

Perception: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (15) + 20 = 35

I really, really hope the devil went and waited for us to find her, with a sword on Hetamon's throat... then waited even longer, her smile slowly freezing on her face, before finally admitting to herself "those "¤%#¤% are NOT coming!". And now, once she has just started to get comfortable again... "Guess who!"

Male Human Monk (unchained) 11

Oh, and casting those things will take so many turns that the act of casting itself is startig to eat the duration of the first buffs, even if he starts (naturally) with the longest-lasting ones ;^) Not to mention he needs to do the buffing a round or two before we get to the room, as that might turn into a combat zone at any moment.

Action 1
Tillia arrived with Jillian and Hob and saw the pathetic state that Rizolla and Caleb were in in shock. She looked at her friends and asked, "So what happened to them? It's rather disturbing and I don't want to have it happen to me." She then noticed the tiefling and asked, "Who is she and why is she all tied up like that?"

As they made their way to the battle sight, Jillian asked softly, "What exactly are we up against? What can we expect? And who will be doing what? I'm best if I can get in close and flank with somebody. I've got an invisibility potion I can take, then hopefully I can get around behind."

male

Guys,

I'm going to delay this turn until tomorrow.

Part of the issue is the buffs which I see as two issues:

a) book keeping: I do all that but I need help from you guys, especially now at higher levels. It takes time to look all that up and transfer it to the status table. So from now on, please state the buff along with the effect and the duration. For example (haste, +1 bonus on attack rolls and a +1 dodge bonus to AC and Reflex saves and an extra attack if full round attack, 10 rounds).

b) the other issue is the power curve. If you guys are all buffed up then I'll have to buff up enemies to make the encounters fun so think on this before you give buff up 10 times.

And Hob, I know it sounds like I'm picking on you but I'm not. Your buffs were just the drop that tipped the bucket. :)

On it, got some time for posting about now-ish ;^)

”We are on a rescue mission to recover a friend we have a reason to believe is held here, likely against his will,” Eirik murmured. ”We arrived to find a pair of hags in the midst of a fell ritual of summoning or transformation. Our attack interrupted that and dealt with the hags easily enough, but an invisible foe early finished us. She’d hide under the mantle of her spell, flinging spells that disabled and disoriented us – Caleb and Rizolla fared the worst as they are still a far cry of their former selves. Once we finally beat our way through her defences she teleported away, but the way she acted suggested she wasn’t running for her life but rather realizing she still had a shaved knuckle she had yet to cast. I fear she was preparing to use more hostages to try and force us to surrender. Rather than continuing blindly, we decided at that point to regroup.”

”There is a large chamber ahead, a makeshift temple to dark powers,” he went on, frowning. ”With two… no, three exits we didn’t have not had time to try. And given what little I know about devils – all of it bad – she may well have used the time to summon minions to defend her. I doubt she has had time to arrange any elaborate defences.”

”As to what we can do… Tillia is a master of mental manipulation magic, Noravia is skilled in the healing arts and uses her divine powers to help and protect us. Hob here is an expert at empowering himself with magic and serves well as a walking siege weapon – seeing him let loose with that oversized weapon of his is quite the experience. While I am good at hitting people with my fists ‘till they give up. That, and getting around quickly on the battlefield.”

@Fabian: I can see where you are coming from. Hob is a Transmuter/Whote Necromancer, so his magic is all about buffs. They pretty much just make up for the low BAB and missing proficiencies though. As I recall last time Hob (with all his buffs) was still less impressive than Eirik.
I can do what I did last time and give you the abbreviated combat profile with buffs if you like?

Mage Armor (+4 Armor to AC, hours)
Heightened Awareness (+2 per & knowledges, 90 mins)
Ant Haul (Roughly triple carrying capacity, hours)
Bull's Strength (self, +4 enhancement to Str, 9 mins)
Cat's Grace (self, +4 enhancement to Dex, 9 mins)
Defending Bone (DR 5/Bludgeoning, capped at 45 points, hours)
Magic Weapon (Greater) on Hammer (Hammer becomes +2 for hours)
Ablative Barrier (self) (Convert 5 dam per attack to nl, cap 45, hours)
Echolocation (Blindsight 40ft, 90 mins)
Monstrous Physique (Hag, self) (become large. +4 str. -2 Dex. +4 nat armor. Natural attacks (bite and 2 claws) darkvision 60ft.)

All up: Str +8, Dex +2, AC +7, to hit melee +3 (+5 hammer), Darkvision 60ft, Blindsighy 40ft, bite +12 (1d6+9), 2 claws +12 (1d6+9 plus grab) or hammer +14 (3d6+15), various (capped) defences.

If it is a problem I can have Hob teleport Caleb and Ves to wherever as a change of plans. They could probably be at the Vault of Abadar in five minutes.

Ssshh... don't keep putting Eirik on a pedestal or Fabian will look at me with the Ban Hammer in hand ;^) Besides, I'm playing nice: I *could* have aimed for an Improved Trip/Leg Sweep + Medusa’s Wrath combo for 2 bonus unarmed attacks every round. I don't even know what that combo is so I would definitely ban it! :)

I don't have the impression of Hob being underwhelming at all. Remember that my brain is wired for story and scenes and I remember Hob chomping down on soldiers' heads and taking on the wyvern. That last stands out as one of the memorable scenes in the story.

So maybe underwhelming mechanics wise (maybe?) but not story/scene wise.

Tillia listened to the recap of what had happened and shook her head as she said, "You just can't survive these things without me can you?" She looked at Eirick in particular and said, "That's Mistress of Mental Manipulation Magic Eirick, I don't have the right parts to be a Master of it."

My only self buff is the usual Mage Armor (8 hours) which is in my statblock already. I would also point out that the encounters tend to assume you have all these kinds of buffs up anyway, at least the long term ones I think.

That's fair, I think he's pretty cool! There is more to life than numbers... that said, I've only ever played low level buff mages and I hadn't internalised that as you go up levels you need more and more just to stay where you (comparatively) are.

"I stand corrected - your misstressy of mental manipulation is second to none," Eirik chuckled.

I'm just excited to be playing a 9th level character! I've only ever gotten above 7th once - in a years-long tabletop game over a decade ago (oof, that dates me). No buffs for me for this first battle, other than invisibility to get me in position. Hopefully.

Jillian stared in fascination as Eirik spoke of their prowess. The tiny, dark-skinned woman, barely more than a girl, was covered in black mithril and leather, and carried a large sword and shield. Her bow was strung and slung across her back, and her quiver held many differently-fletched arrows.

The thought of entering a battle unarmed, and barely armoured, made her shiver with a strange mix of fear and excitement. The beautiful wizard, barely older than Jillian herself, seemed grossly underprepared for combat. However, it was clear that she had great magic at her disposal, and Jillian looked forward to seeing her in action.

Noravia, also armed and armoured, looked ready to combine Jillian's martial approach with magic from the goddess. She stared in awe as the burly Hob began to fortify himself with spell after spell. His already fearsome look was further added to until Jillian shuddered and stepped away. [i]Thank goodness they are on my side! Or, perhaps more truly, that I am on theirs."[/b]

Holding her potion, she prepared to quaff it. "It is a great honour to fight at your sides. Forvian has spoken very highly of all of you, and truth be told, it is intimidating to be here. But Hetemon is a friend, and I am honoured that Forvian thought me ready to join the fight to free him. If his devil-mother is still invisible, how will we find her? Who shall take the seeing potions? I have these," she held up two small bladders filled with red paint. "If somebody who sees her can hit her with these, the rest of us will have a target to aim at."

I'm assuming Noravia will cast protection from evil on us just before we enter

Chatted with Shari tonight, her eye is doing well, but she has to stay on her back and no screen time until Monday at least. She gave me some direction for Noravia

Jillian stared at the note in horror, fearing greatly for Hetamon. "Heartless?" she whispered, her voice coming from seemingly empty space. "You don't think she..." she could barely bear to say it, "took it out?"

Noravia's gut told her to run back the way she'd come, to run to Caleb and protect him, as he had no way of protecting himself right now. "We have to go," she said, "we can't let her get to Caleb and Rizolla."

Jillian disagreed, "They're in good hands, they're hidden and protected. We've come all this way, and used all this magic. If there's a chance that Hetamon is alive, we need to move!" The small girl moved invisibly towards the doors. "Hob, can you hear through them? Which one do we open?"

Let's do a quick listen by the two doors... hear anything? And would this be a specific enough a situation for someone to Detect Magic at the doors for alarms/traps?

"If the devil isn't merely messing with us, we have no way of knowing wether she left to look for our friends an hour or a minute ago," Eirik said. "Indeed, us running to our friends might be just the thing a devil hiding near the exit would be waiting for, to follow us in. Let us not be too hasty." The monk crept towards the southern doors, ears peeled in case he could hear something from the rooms beyond.

C&B are just outside the seer tunnels and Forvian is with them. I don't think they were well hidden at all. You all decided that it was not worth the risk of Forvian guiding them so you asked him to just hang tight. I distinctly remember Noravia being very happy and relieved about this.

No sounds from behind either door.

Questions?

Game on!

PS: By 'heartless' I meant 'with no love'. You know English my second language, yada, yada.

Or did I? :)

"If we can find this being I can make her stand out, I just have to know roughly where she is and I can make it so her invisibility is worthless. Once that is done I can try to reduce any defensive magic she casts." She smiled viciously as she continued, "I might even be able to place her under my control instead of the other way around."

The sights in the room with the hag bodies were intriguing and Tillia wished she could take the time to study what was being done. It was obviously a fel right of some sort but she could learn from it.

Moving on she saw the note and was worried with what she read. "This could be bad, she might well know what we are doing but I bet she didn't expect us to have them stay here." Her expression was amused, "Isn't she in for a surprise." The mage considered the note's implications of the doors and said, "It sounds like one door has Hetamon and the other is either trapped or has something unpleasant behind it."

Oops, I though they were being taken somewhere. Edit my last post to just say protected, not hidden and protected.

"It could very well be a trick," Jillian agreed. "She may be in with Hetamon, and is counting on us being distracted by her nasty trap while she escapes. Please, let us pick a door."
