Travigan puts the creature out of its misery.
Just past the grimlock, the twisted tunnel opens up on a rickety rope bridge that spans over a rubble strewn cavern. The tunnel continues on the other side.

Ulfak rubs a thick thumb over the supple leather and grins. "It good for wolf in the fields not so much for bear in a cave. I keep this on here and change when we go out to fresh air. Or you have it, bomber."
Erethyn Dreyer |
Erethyn peered at the bridge and down below.

"Better go across one at a time, would be my tho..."
He paused for a brief moment and his eyes narrowed.
"We're not alone."
Travigan Frost |
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
"Bah, when 'ave we ever been alone in this stinking pit? It's one messy fight after another down 'ere an' I've half a mind ta take these two knives 'ere an' introduce 'em ta Smenk's backside!" The dour blacksmith then trails off on a number of colorful curses for the slimy business man as he peers over the lip of the bridge and, seeing nothing, frowns. After his grumblings settle down he offers, "Are ye wantin' me ta cross first? I'm thinkin' if this thing'll hold me it'll hold any of you wi' ease."

Travigan is also in studded leather and could make use of the armor if neither Ratchet nor Ulfak want it.
Erethyn Dreyer |
As more of a front-liner, especially since he's a Barbarian, I'd put my vote in with Travigan.
"Two, down below. Probably hostile. I'm beginning to think I may have made an error in suggesting we go northward."
Ulfak Niarka |
Ulfak waits for the description of what is below and shrugs, "let us go on and leave them down there. I do not want to fight animals of the underground unless I have do."
The shaman takes out a piece of dried meat and chews on the flesh with large incisors while everyone decides. He drips a little juice from the corner of his mouth and wipes it with the back of his heavy hand.
Travigan Frost |
Travigan nods in agreement with Ulfak, "Two things down there, eh? Ah, I seem 'em now. No idea what they are. Weird lookin', though." He scratches his beard and regards the bridge again. "Are ye wantin' ta turn 'round then, Erethyn? Ye wonderin' if th' trouble in the mines are back up in the worked portions? What if th' trouble's jus' over this bridge? How 'bout we cross, an' if there's nothin' o' note after a bit, we turn 'round?"
Erethyn Dreyer |
Erethyn frowns in thought for a moment, before nodding.
"I would hate to think we turned back just before finding something at the end of this tunnel. Alright, we'll ignore those creatures for now and continue forward. Lead the way Wulfak... Hmm, for all my years and study, I've never actually learned much of subterranean creatures. I suppose I have my next area of research."
As a side note, I just realized that I've been forgetting to speak only in Celestial during our battles. Granted, thus far, it's been okay as no one has been talking to Erethyn directly and mostly the things he says are personal musings or prayers for his spells. But in the future I will try to remember he can only say and understand things in a language no one else can understand.
GM Fanguar |
You make your way across the rickety walkway and thought it creaks ominously beneath your feet, you manage to cross without any incident. Continuing down the twisting tunnel, you begin to hear voices shouting in that terrible language of the grimocks'.
Poking an around the final bend, you catch sight of the cavern beyond. Halfway across the room, the cavern floor abruptly rises 10feet, splitting the room effectively in half. Three viscous warriors with crude spears stand at the ready on the lower floor, while a hulking, scarred grimlock stands at the ready on the upper portion. He holds an ornate, horn bow at the ready and scans the entrance for enemies.
Combat situation: you need to bypass the spear weilders and climb the 10' cliff to reach the archer. They are currently holding a defensive position, so I'll allow you some planning before we roll initiative. They are expecting trouble.
Erethyn Dreyer |
Taking a few cautious steps away from the bend, Erethyn begins speaking in a low voice to the others.
"They're getting more organized now. I think we're getting close to something but I'm not sure what. The big one will be the most dangerous, I think we'll need to draw the others away from it. Either that or Sandra, can you blind it?"
Ulfak Niarka |
Ulfak looks at the cobwebs above as he listens. He sees a spider turning the dessicated body of a cave fly over and over and smiles. "I will call on the insects of the underground to aid us. They can swarm over those spearmen and unless they have fire, my guess is that they will lose. Do not blind a grimlock - it is a creature with no eyes. Sound and explosions are better sources of confusion."
Ulfak can cast longstrider and magic fang on himself, then cast summon swarm and step out to release the spiders from the entrance. The spiders last until Ulfak stops concentrating + 2 rounds or they die. May need someone to block a readied arrow if they really are that prepared.
Travigan Frost |
Travigan pulls a potion from his pack and drinks it as Ulfak offers a plan. "So ye send them crawlies at th' one wi' th' big bow and we chop the nearer ones ta bits, is that it?" He shrugs and pulls a javelin free. "Works fer me."

Travigan Frost |
dang, I was counting on a Ratchet bomb to soften them up/let us approach without getting peppered. I don't have anything clever to try; Travigan isn't all that versatile after all. And it seems their blindsense/sight is pretty considerable.
Not sure how either of our oracles are doing spell-wise at this point, but if we're planning to go forward with this combat, Travigan could use a touch of divine shield if either Erethyn or Sandra could spare the spell slot.
Ulfak Niarka |
Ulfak casts two spells on himself, next to Travigan. The magic infuses his teeth forming reddish lit magic, the fangs seem to lengthen and sharpen. Then he calls on his movement to be that of a wolven, and he feels the energy springing into his legs.
Magic fang and longstrider, then full round action to cast summon spider swarm
The shaman begins the spell to call a swarm into the room from the entrance. He stays out of sight and will point to the furthest spot into the chamber he can, at most forty feet.
I don't want the spell disrupted so will sacrifice distance to ensure the grimlocks cannot get a shot or spear off.
Erethyn Dreyer |
I'm actually a little hesitant to cast my last 1st level spell right now. Been kind of non-stop encounters. If it looks like we'll really need it then sure. Though maybe Sandra could instead?
Ulfak Niarka |
Yeah. I wouldn't want you to use up your last level one either since they give the impression of being guards. I am disappointed that Sandra hasn't posted yet. Its been eleven days since her last in-game post, and with four of us, and a combat soon, we need everyone posting daily or this game will suffer..
Travigan Frost |
I agree with Ulfak on all counts
Travigan rolls his shoulders and neck several times, adjusting his grip on his axe as the others bring their magics to bear in preparation for the fight. He grumbles quietly, "I jus' wanna be done wi' this and then be done wi' tha' slimy, sackgrabbin' Smenk."
Erethyn Dreyer |
True, that is worrisome about Sandra. But even if it's just the three of us for now, I've still got a whole lot of healing magic left to use, Channels and my transformation ability. I think we can handle this.

From my understanding of the spell, the caster has no control of the swarm once summoned. That being the case, if he casts it with out line of sight on the baddies, it will just attack the closest creatures, which would be you guys. The first person to step out will eat an arrow. I am fine with a 'hold the spell' type situation where you move out and release the spell. You'll still eat an arrow, but you wont have to make a concentration check for it to go off. That make sense?
Ulfak Niarka |
It attacks my enemies. I don't like grimlocks. As long as Ulfak can see into part of the chamber, even five feet, that is where the swarms appear. The further in is better for me but so long as I have a corner to stop the archer then it should work.
The magic coalesces before the shaman, speckles and sparks turn into spiders. Many spiders until they pile and pile.
Erethyn Dreyer |
On second thought, here's a better idea. Erethyn will use one round of his Energy body ability, making him a golden glowing fire Elemental, this will also grant him immunity to critical hits. Go full defensive and move into the room first to take the arrow for Ulfak so he can get his spell off.
"Ulfak, hold a moment." Erethyn said before his body suddenly began bursting with bright light.
After a moment, the cold air of the cave was replaced with a pleasantly warm breeze emanating from the now vaguely humanoid form that was once Erethyn. He then stepped into the cave.

.
Sorry, I'm confused, are you casting summon nature's ally or summon swarm? Because You don't control the swarm with summon swarm
Ulfak Niarka |
Nope you are right.I am wrong. Sorry for the confusion I was mixing the two spells. Not great play on my part. I am busy moving house this week so I'll burn summon swarm and cast summon nature's ally for a pack of three eagles. Then let you NPC them. I should be back in action by Monday.

I do not currently posses Burning Gaze. I am like Eretyn an oracle. I can instead do an Eldrich Bolt please take -4 if current target is in combat. / and i can take over healing duties for the moment (spell count adjusted and current)
