Game Master Kobolum

Guilty. You are a lawbreaker – the worst of the worst. Too dangerous to live amongst the good people of Talingarde, they dragged you in chains before a magistrate and condemned you. They sent you to the worst prison in the land and there they forever marked you. They held you down and branded you with a runic F. You are forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. Branderscar is only a holding pen. In three days – justice comes. In three days – everything ends.

What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only…

No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

I can carry my own gear. Now knowing about the marks Saulric drops the extra gear. He grabs another quiver of arrows, after dropping the extra longswords and leather clubs. He reaches out and hefts the greatsword

I'll make a post later today if you're all done at the armory.

Saulric after giving the other's sufficient time to decide what they want gathers the rest of the loose weapons up and starts seeing what he can strap to himself comfortably.

Araton opens the door to a room with two sconce held torches. It's only decoration being a single desk and a couple of chairs. The desk itself is covered with clutter of all kinds of paperwork.

Perfect. Hey, bring that backpack! Lazarus starts sifting through the paperwork looking for anything interesting or blackmail-worthy. And you see if the admin had kept his (un)holy symbol.

Backpack?

Wasn't there a mwk backpack in the armory?

Lazarus "Z" the Rat wrote:

No.

Huh. Sorry. Game info bleed. Nevertheless, I search.

As Lazarus goes over the desk he finds that the various paperwork is official documentation about the prison. He also comes across a map with detailed patrol routes of the guards in it and what times their stations shift. Although the names are useless to you this means that you can figure out how many guards will be where and at what time, if you figure out what time it is.

Perfect! He says as he tucks away the information. Let's go. We need to find out what time it is.

GM, are there any windows or doors in this room?

No windows. You have access to the entire map and images now so you should be able to see the doors. You're in room fourteen.

Before the group left the armory, Baolo claims the great sword and heavy mace. Ain't my cleavers and carving knives, but these'll do," the former butcher says as he straps them to his body. Following the others, he simply keeps watch as the next room is picked apart. Once it looks like people are nearly done exploring the room, Baolo moves to check out the door across from where they had entered.

Move to the door leading to 15 and attempt to open.

Saulric already got the greatsword.

This appears to simply be a slovenly kept bed chamber. There is a bed, a small table and wardrobe.

Araton stays mostly out of the way of the others as they maneuver through the room he had opened, poring over the desk within the middle of the room. They seemed to have found some sort of a map, quite the interesting and useful find to help them navigate through this wretched place. The elf's interest quickly passes onto Baolo as he enters into the next room, the lithe assassin following with him.

"No need to be gentle here. Let us search it, shall we?" Araton murmurs to Baolo, drawing out his dagger and proceeding to check through everything. He'd cut open the bed and search through it, under it, before moving to the wardrobe and checking for any hidden chamber or stashed away goodies.

Searching The Room (Perception): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10

The sloven appearance of the room makes Araton care less and less for what may be here. Gold coins weren't going to save them from the wrath of Talingarde.

"A large collection of oil could cause scoring and damage to the infrastructure. However, such an effort would not be worth the payoff; they'll search for us nonetheless even if bodies are found in our cells. Talingarde is not ran by fools." Araton murmurs, tossing the clothing and flask out of the wardrobe before turning around. His calm, emotionless face split slightly into a small smile at the sight of the iron strong box underneath the bed. "Well...what do we have here."

Kneeling down beside Saulric, Araton would first inspect the personal locker carefully. This was no armory door; traps could be suspected on such a thing. If Araton found such a trap, he'd begin to work carefully to undo the mechanism safely.

Perception (Traps): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12Disable Device (Traps): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21

Assuming he found any traps and he was successful at disabling them, Araton would then work on opening up the locker itself to see what laid inside.

Open Lock: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 8 + 2 = 13

Irritated at the resistance of the device, he'd look back at the others. "Give me a minute or two. I'll get this open."

I'm going to take 20 again to open the lock.
Open Lock: 20 + 8 + 2 = 30

Araton takes three minutes examining and opening the strong box. Inside he finds a case of Rotgut Whiskey and one thousand two hundred thirty-five gold pieces. This is a larcenously huge amount of money to be possessed by anyone in this declining prison

Upon learning of this sum, Lazarus steps back into the records room to look for a ledger or record that could be used as leverage should a certain official threaten them outside this prison. Assuming, of course, they escaped. There almost certainly was one. He knew personally how hard it was for lies as large as this to keep straight. The question is where it was.

perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (16) + 9 = 25

All of those records are definitely official if there's anything incriminating in them it's not going to be written in big black ink saying “Blackmail material” so you will have to spend time going over the documents to find out if there's anything incriminating to be found.

I don't think there was one for the gold but I believe all the clothing came in a sack? We'll have to check with the DM about it.

The locker shifted with the sound of coins and the shining gold inside made him smile. "Seems like we have a very busy fellow here." Araton would turn to the others and ask for the map, looking at it for just a moment before he gave a nod.

"On the other side, by the common room there, there seems to be a kitchen or something. Perhaps we can an extra sack or two from there. There's a side door there too, probably a safer bet to move around other than the front door." Araton wished to secure this building, make sure that no one else was coming in or out of it. There was also a bit of professional pride in him that was irritated at the treatment by the guards. It'll show them to mistreat an assassin when their hearts are all punctured.

The sack in the veil held common clothes for you all and less than one gold piece worth of components for spells.

As you all are going about your own business Grumblejack takes the remaining bottles of whiskey, breaks open the tops, and downs all of them. “Grumblejack had better.”

Baolo's eyes widened when he glaced at the pile of coin in the chest before his eyes turned back to keeping an eye out for other gaurds. That was more coin than he had ever sen in his life. "So this guy is just as foul as Handor was...all the more reason to take his head," the half-orc muttered. While scoring all that coin was good...it would help if they made it out of the prison, but not help them in their current situation. "I say each take what he can carry and we move on. I ain't keen to haul a whole chest around. Already tough enough being sneaky when I was build for choppin'" With that, Baolo follows Araton's suggestion, heading in the direction of the kitchen to see is a sack or such could be found. It was obvious that the half-orc was eager to leave this place and feared that sticking aorund to long would reduce his chance to escape.

Araton would look to Saulric and to the others, giving a nod before he opened the door and pushed it inwards.

Kath guarded the door when the others were rummaging through what appeared to be some officers quarters. Only when she hears about the large sum of gold found her does she turn around for a moment. Those were the amount of funds you'd find on a wealthy merchant, not something you'd expect from someone in this dump.

When they all started to move on Kath followed, sword and shield at the ready.

The room that Araton pointed out is a kitchen, a kitchen that at a glance is well stocked and currently occupied by two servants.

Araton would stalk into the kitchen silently, moving along the counters with nary a step. Those dark eyes focused on his targets, assessing which one seemed weaker. If one was younger in appearance to the other, he'd go for that one. If one of them was a woman, he'd most assuredly aim for her. The servants talked nonchalantly, boring little tales of their lives outside of this awful place. Drawing his rapier quietly, he'd sweep up behind his target and wrap a slim arm around them and place the knife against their back. The sharp blade would prick right on the lower side of the servant's back, drawing blood and ready to pierce through and rupture the poor fellow's innards.

"Both of you. Stay exactly where you are and if you do, I promise you will not die this day. Try me and I will let the devils outside this room have their way with you." Araton's voice was low and cold, uncaring either way and if the one free servant looked him in the eyes, he'd see that the assassin meant every bit of his words.

[ooc]I'd like to make an intimidate check to cow the servants into obeying my orders. I'd like to make a readied action that should either servant disobey, I strike the servant I am beside.

If They Obey:
A cruel smile spreads across Araton's face as he whistles for the others to come into the room, nodding at one servant not within his clutches. "You've chosen well. Now, I have questions that need to be answered. How many ways are there in and out of this prison? Is there a warning bell anywhere on the premise? Tell me about the sergeant who branded us. Tell me this and we will simply lock you in our cells to be rescued in time. If you lie...I will let you watch the ogre eat this one first...then you."

If They Disobey:
Araton's reactions are fast and swift, the rapier striking in true to the servant in his arms. As he does so, he whistles to the others to get in quickly before they can escape and alert the prison.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9Damage: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

The male servant instead of cry of shocking and grabs for a nearby knife but doesn't do anything more once he realizes that his female companion has been taken hostage. The man looks the elf in the eye end and here's his ultimatum and curses under his breath, the prisoners of Branderscar are the worst of the worst and he doesn't like his chances against anyone evil enough to be sent to the prison, no matter how good his reflexes are. “Fine, what do you want?”

The woman in Araton’s grip stands stone still as he list off his questions. When he finishes the eyes of the servant with the knife flicks over to her before settling back on Araton. “All right, there's no warning bell and there two ways out of the prison. You either cross the bridge or throw yourself into the ocean. And the Sergeant”—the servant's tone turns a bit sour—“isn’t really work talking about.”

Lazarus strides into the kitchen like he owns the place and listens to the exchange as he approaches.
I suggest you let us decide what's worth talking about, sir. He says as he comes into conversation range. Also, do you happen to know the time? One does get frightfully disoriented in here.
The juxtaposition of polite discourse and deadly threat makes for an interesting cocktail, I find. Let's see how these two respond.

Araton smiles at the man as he calms down enough to answer his questions. It was as they feared; the gate was the only way out of the prison it seemed. There was no warning bell, just the horns that the guards may have that could cause some issues. The man's sour and indignant tone in regards to the sergeant was a curious thing for certain, not something that he had expected at all. Yet Lazarus would take the moment to enter into the kitchen then and assume control of the situation, something that was just fine in the assassin's eyes. He could be polite, if necessary, but it certainly was not his specialty. No, he left that for the more charismatic among them to handle.

The woman was as still as the dead and Araton would lean in close, ensuring that the other man could see him as he did so. Softly, he whispered into her ear. "Do not fear, little girl. If I must, it won't hurt for long. Just pray to your god and hope that your friend remains as wise as he is now." The point of that rapier would twist ever so lightly, just enough to make her whimper while the cold elf's eyes stayed on the armed man. He was a killer but that didn't mean he didn't enjoy his job.

When the girl whimpers Lazarus makes a show of gesturing over to Araton and saying, Oh, I do apologize for interrupting. My manners have already started to rust in this hell hole. Would you like to add anything?

The assassin's attention turns towards the servant again, coldly registering him before he gives a small shake of his head. "I think not. Though..." Araton considers for a moment before nodding. "How much meat do you all have on hand?"

“You left any manners worth having behind when you crawled out of the hole you came from,” The servant spits at Lazarus before he turns his attention back to Araton, “and Blackerly really an't worth talking about. He's a stupid greedy brute, that's it.”

Oh! Disgusting.
Lazarus sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose. Ataron, please remind this fine gentleman of his situation. And of the fact that he didn't answer all of our questions.
