Honestly, I was hoping it was just one level, two max. That is a huge resource just "gone." But we could also use the help and I think a fully healthy Maffei may have things she can bring to the table (err, screen?) that a drained Maffei could not. I say we do it.

"It's divine healing we can source to restore your vitality, luv." Brandor sets about reading the scroll of Restoration. Upon feedback from Maffei, he will continue with each scroll until her life force is restored in full.


There is one little wrinkle in your plan. Maffei's level losses are permanent. That means that dispelling each one will cost 1,000 gp in diamond dust. The dust exists in Belhaim, but that's a boatload of cash.

"I won't ask you to spend that," says Maffei. "It is a lot of money. But if you choose to fight a dragon, you may need me at full strength. If you choose to spend the money, I will repay you out whatever we should earn as dragonslayers. Share and share alike? And we would treat it as an advance against my share."

Brandor would be for spending the money even without the terms. "Sometimes the cost of the life we live is expensive. But if we are going to destroy an undead dragon, I feel like we should be bringing our A game."


Several hours later, you have used Lady Origena's scrip to purchase diamond dust from the late Chosk Grellen's shell-shocked son. Returning to the cave, Reveka uses the scrolls successfully. With each reading of the scroll the shadows comprising Maffei's body grow darker, richer and more subtle.

"Ahhh... I can... breathe again. That feels like a weight off my chest. Thank you Reveka. Thank you all. It is good to know that some residents of this plane are better people than Hunclay was. Now, I believe we were about to visit a tomb? I'm ready. Let's go."

Pleased that Maffei had been restored to her full vitality, Reveka officially welcomed her to the party before turning solemn and adding, "Yes, let us see if Aeterperax's bones lie in Lady Tula's crypt. If they do, then the dragon that threatened the town, using the name, is a trickster." Following Uhe's lead, Reveka hefted the pack onto her shoulder/back, and, hearing her dwarf friend's choice, nodded her head in agreement. "I agree with Uhe on taking the route that leaves the road."

"Agreed. Let's move out."


Despite its grand name, the Dragonfen is a relatively small place, covering only a dozen square miles or so. By midday you have reached the second crossing of the Eskander and once over the bridge, turn northwest, following the stream's southern bank. Birds chirp and crickets buzz while the green and gold foliage of early autumn make for pleasant hiking.

This changes as you travel north, however. The sounds fade away and the vegetation becomes brown and sere. Atop a knoll that rises above the creek you spot the ancient bones of a dragon. Still an awe-inspiring site after a thousand years, they ribs are as big across as a man's trunk. The enormous skull is as large as an oxcart. The skeleton has partially sunk into the bog, but enough remains that it still appears to be draped over the low, earthen mound. On the side of the mound is a stone door with a single, rough keyhole.

Liam whispers to the others, "Oh, wow. I had no idea..." Liam is in a semi-state of shock as he approaches with the group, "I mean... WAIT. Then the undead one was an illusion. So some powerful caster is relying on the fear of the old tales to achieve their desires. Bizarre. I would think if they are powerful enough to pull off such visual foolery, they are mighty enough not to have to use it. Or is this threat we have engaged with really a bluff?"

Liam seems lost in his ponderings as we look over the dragon skeleton before he is struck by a bit of avarice, thinking to himself, now might not be the time, but before we leave this fetid place, I will be rewarding myself with some of those bones. Can't tell from this angle, but maybe a tooth or five if any remain...

Checking for general wildlife noises - if it is deathly quiet could indicate predator/threat nearby

Edo grunts, as the dwarf makes his way effortlessly into the black goo. "Them bones could be illusions as well." He pauses. "Or maybe they're real Hunk Lay ain't dead." Edo throws some stones into the tar.

Brandor approach the bones, with an intent to detect magic, evil and undeadness. After the initial investigation, he will consecrate the area.


Folks, it looks like a dead dragon draped over a hill with a door in it. :-) Except to Reveka, for whom it looks like a silvery mist.

Uhe, much of the skeleton is observable up close on dry land. Do you want to go that way, or actually into the bog?

Brandor finds no evidence of magic or evil. Nor does he detect any undeath, but something about that spell doesn't sit right with him. Almost like the spell wasn't a solid "no." He consecrates the area, wondering.

Uhe searches for a long tree branch to test the depths of the tar pit. If it appears more than his waist deep, the dwarf will shrug and go knock on the door.

"If someone could be so kind as to describe what they see, for my eyes can only discern a silvery mist landscape. It is an inconvenience, I am aware. Alas, I am without sight further than thirty feet and will have be worked around if I am to be useful to any of you, my friends," she called out steadily, not wishing for her voice to echo/carry and draw unwanted attention. "So, the dragon Aeterperax's bones are here? Yes? That would mean the other creature was certainly a trickster, able to use illusion..."

As Uhe had wadded into the tar to get a closer look at the dragon bones she could hear them discussing, Reveka strained and managed to just see Uhe, stick in hand, testing the depths of the tar pit. Clever man she thought to herself.

"Is it very deep, dear Uhe?" she enquired of her dwaven scholar friend.

Uhe will always describe what he sees to Reveka; although, it will always sound like a poem, short story or encyclopedic.


There is no tar pit. No tar at all. The area is marshy, with small streams and boggy ground in most directions. The creek is merely the most obvious and continuous of these watercourses. But amidst the marsh also exist many areas of relatively firm ground. Among these is a low hill rising up from the creek's banks. On top of and around this are the bones of Aeteperax the dragon.

You may walk in the marsh if you choose, but that is not recommended. The path to the hill is muddy, but relatively solid.

As Uhe approaches the door, a few yards ahead of everyone else, a sudden babbling fills the still air. Mad piping and insane ramblings in half a hundred tongues and no tongue at all assault your ears as from the eye socket of the dragon's skull emerges an insane mass of flesh that writhes and shudders, birthing and swallowing eyes, ears and mouths in rapid succession, each of the eyes madly gibbering, screaming, talking, laughing, singing, crying all at once.

The creature is just beyond Reveka's sight, though she can hear it well enough. She assumes it's a crowd unless someone informs her otherwise.

Reveka could not see what was making all the sounds, but she could hear them all and wondered what Uhe had uncovered. With a strength of will, she pushed aside the maddening assault to her ears to keep her mind clear and present. "Are there many surrounding us?" she called out to Uhe and the others, hoping someone would answer her. Until she could discern the situation at hand, Reveka pulled a parchment from her pouch - it contained the Mother of Soul's holy words and she began to quietly read/cast. When she was done, she felt the immediate warmth/sensation of the magical field surrounding her being and giving her added protection from what was beyond her sight.

Uhe sticks the stick into the non tar pit like swamp. The dwarf murmurs something about his eyes and needing new glasses, as he walks over to the door in the hill.
I was once fooled by a door that was actually a mimic. Not entirely relevant at this time; but, it just crossed my mind.

As Reveka and Brandor raise magical defenses against the bizarre monster, Maffei molds shadows directly into fire and hurls a burning arc of flame at the thing. Sadly, it does little more than singe the cacophanous beast.

Sadly, it is immune to critical hits. Liam shoots a gout of flame that nearly sears Edo's ear while Brandor's morningstar simply glances off the monster's rubbery hide.

Maffei moves forward, drawing her scimitar and shortsword and attacks, slicing deep into its flesh with supernaturally cold steel!
