Lara brandishes her water-adapted crossbow and lines up a shot on the shark. With a pull of the trigger, she sends a harpoon-like bolt winging (swimming?) toward the murderous fish.

Thame Smythe |
Wanting to save his strength-sapping spell in case the other freakishly strong sea devil joined the fight, Thame went through the time-consuming process of drawing back the line to place the bolt in the strange underwater heavy crossbow he had confiscated from the sahuagin the previous day. He grew concerned as Kaldan was bitten deeply by the shark, but kept his cool and got the bolt in place.

Even with the shark dead, Kaldan's wounds still bleed. Kaldan takes the 6 points of bleed I previously rolled at the start of his turn. he'll take another 1d6 next turn if not healed.

Thame's eyes widened as Kaldan's luck turned and he ran through the shark with a powerful, well-placed blow. Through the cloud of blood came the sea devil, charging forward with reckless abandon as it ran the half-orc through. The wizard warily eyed the opening to the hull of the ship, but swam forward anyway, waving his arms with seeming abandon before finishing the casting of his spell, again trying to get through the mental defenses of the sahuagin to put a quick end to the fight.

Thame hissed in pain as the crossbow bolt cut a deep gash along his side, wondering why he even bothered to create his magical illusions. Maybe he had messed up the spell and only he was seeing the duplicates? He'd have to check into it later. Seeing the sea devil brute with the wicked weapon come out of the ship, the wizard made him a priority, and seeing as he had a nicely loaded crossbow in his hands, he fired it at the sahuagin.
Heavy Crossbow: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Frowning as the weapon's aim was surely compromised due to the watery conditions, the wizard decided that perhaps a swim was in order to make him a less attractive target to the leader of the bad guys.

GM Strikes Back |
Thame and Lara have a lot of trouble figuring out how to use a crossbow underwater, both missing by a large margin.
Kaldan hits the Sahuagin leader, drawing a considerable amount of blood.
as the two dolphins swim in, the sahuagin stabs at one of them with his spear, but is unable to hit it. He does have reach

crossbow: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
damage: 1d10 + 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (8) + (4, 2) + 2 = 16
the bolt pierces through Kaldan's protections, dealing 16 points of damage and knocking him unconscious again.
the larger sahuagin moves forward and stabs at Kragg with his ransuer.
ransuer: 1d20 + 10 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 2 - 2 = 26
damage: 2d4 + 7 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (3, 2) + 7 + 6 + 2 = 20
even with his magical shield, Kragg takes a decent wound from the spear.
he then bites one of the dolphins
If Kaldan chooses to use orc ferocity to keep going after the crossbow bolt, this bite will be at him instead. Please choose what you want to do before looking at the rolls below. I'll adjust the round summary based on your choice.

I love you guys!
GM Strikes Back |
Oi, so many rules in effect here, let's step through it all and see what we come up with.
first, because it is the simplest one and not as dependant on other things: Thame, which sahuagin are you going after? you have clear lines to the yellow one, but to clarify the bigger one with the ransuer is red. the yellow one is shooting a crossbow and is not as big or brutal looking
Trieste, my apologies, I mixed up which one you went after as well. you did have enough to hit the yellow one, who now takes 11 damage from your attack.
now for the complicated one. Kaldan's base AC is 16. enlarge person drops it to 14. Kragg's aura puts it back to 16. cover puts him up to 20. shooting into melee brings the shot down to a 19.
I then went and looked back at the creature to look for precise shot. it does not have precise shot, but it does have point-blank shot, bringing its total back to 20, making it a hit.
as far as protection from arrows goes, it is indeed a magical arrow, which cuts through the protection, which I tried to point out in my description but I realize that wasn't very clear. and now writing this, I realize the +1 for the magical arrow was not included in the initial roll, so make it a 21
there is a lot less going on with the bite attack. the size penalties to AC and the aura come out to a wash, making a 16 still hit.
anything else I missed? I really was hoping to not actually kill Kaldan there, which is why i tried to hit him with a crossbow rather than having the leader stab him which had a better chance of killing him off. if it stands, chalk up another death to orc ferocity, one of my least favorite abilities as a GM...
Kaldan Tide |
Oh poop! Thanks for going into detail. I'll come up with a new frontliner shortly.
Lara Evangeline |
Just for the record, since I don't know that this helps Kaldan any, the enhancement bonuses of ranged weapons and ammo do not stack. So I guess, if the initial attack roll counted both, that might make the final roll a 19 even after Point Blank Shot?
Ranged Weapons and Ammunition: The enhancement bonus from a ranged weapon does not stack with the enhancement bonus from ammunition. Only the higher of the two enhancement bonuses applies.
Kaldan Tide |
We should move this to the discussion thread anyway. :)

Thame cranked up the huge crossbow he was carrying, placing a bolt in it and training it on the creature that had surrendered. Kragg's words about Kaldan saddened the wizard. While the two had not had much in common, the half-orc had been a steady ally. After Trieste's question and the creature's subsequent response, Thame asked,

Assuming that Trieste or Thame translate what is going on Kragg responds with a curse. We were in our boat when we were approached by your kind and attacked. Their death and Kaldan’s are placed upon you and them not us.
Once we get all the info on the hag and exact locations strengths and numbers then I am fine to let him go as per Trieste’s ooc post.
Thame Smythe |
Thame mulled over the creature's words...perhaps the hag had been at least partially responsible for the disappearances of the previous colonists. The wizard remained silent, waiting to hear what the sahuagin had to say about the hag and anything else it added. After translating, the wizard hears the emotional reply from Kragg and looked at Trieste and the others, leaving the decision of releasing the creature to them.
GM Strikes Back |
The Sahuagin looks surprised at Trieste's question
Yes, of course the hag. surely you know of the hag. the great Helekhterie, sovereign of this island, the all-seeing, the Great Slaver. how do you come to this island without her permission?
We of Skorika's tribe serve her, bring her new slaves. merfolk and Locathahs. she pays us and lets us live on her island in return.
to Kragg
You trespass on territory given to us by Helekhterie. we have right to defend against all intruders. if you know what is good for you, you will go to Helekhterie and beg forgiveness for killing her servants and pay her tributes
Kragg Stoneheart |

Where is this all powerful hag that we may come to her and bow before her and plead our ignorance for trespassing upon her domain. Kragg grips his longspear tightly as he says so though.
Bluff 1d20 ⇒ 6 yeah Kragg just wants to kill her at this point
Thame Smythe |
Thame's brow furrowed at the mention of Helekhterie. They had been on the island for several weeks now, and this was the first mention of an island-ruling hag. Still, if the goings-on were occurring mainly in the water, it made sense that the colony hadn't witnessed them. One thing was certain to the wizard, though...they didn't want this fellow to go alert the hag that they knew of her, now. Not if she was as powerful as presented.
With raised, questioning eyebrows he looked at Kragg and Lara, not knowing if the sahuagin understood the Common tongue and therefore not wanting to tip it off should it realize its fate (if there was consensus). He regretted leaving Trieste out, but he didn't know the strange tongues she possessed.
Trieste Carre |
"We need to find out what we can about her. We may need to bide our time a bit before facing her. Hags can be... formidable," she says with a queer grin. "In the meantime, perhaps we can help the locathah with their strix problem. It may be that they have information on her as well. We should also warn Ramona about the new threat that inhabits this land."
She glares at the sahaugin. "We must make him understand that his kind's permission to come to the island has been revoked. That there will be no more slaves and no more attacks on the locathah or merfolk (who we need to meet)."
GM Strikes Back |
I'm not sure what language Trieste is talking in, but for now I will assume the Sahuagin was not privy to her words
the hag is in the crater mountain in the center of the island. the seat of power and heart of the land.
the sahuagin looks suspicious about Kragg's claim to be wanting to give tribte, but has no reason not to tell them how to get to the place he already suggested they go
Lara Evangeline |
Lara keeps her now-loaded crossbow at the ready, eyes on the surviving sahuagin as she converses with Thame.
