Wren the FeatherMage |
Round 2, Init 24
Wren preens for a moment as she appreciates the boom and foom of her magics. She draws his wand of magic missile and lets loose with a volley of missiles (targeting circle).

I now help whiskyjack flank circle wolfman
GM SpiderBeard |
Thanks for your patience guys, long weekend had me busy as hell.
Kawrock fires a bolt down at a werewolf while Wren follows it up with a magic missile. The combined attacks are enough to send it to the ground. Whiskeyjack then turns to the last remaining werewolf, who snarls, obviously intent on fighting to the death. He slams his warhammer into it, Eldon poinks it with his rapier, and finally Lena blasts it off of the side of the temple with a magic missile.
End of Combat
The guardians of the Highthrone are now dead, and the stairs beckon upwards to the roof of the temple.
Wren the FeatherMage |
Wren fluffs her feathers and looks around the carnage as others heal. Cast Detect Magic, look for things of interest.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 Perception
While she looks about, she begins to chitter, putting together pieces of information into a narrative to help the party for the decision they are about to make. PM'd with GM Spiderbeard to get a story recap here, presented by Wren.
Wren begins to explain things.
"You see? You see these columns? This temple was built long ago to use the Dusk Moth to allow communion with the Song of Spheres, the emissary of Desna or even Desna herself. In the past, I believe that was what this temple was used for," Wren starts, looking to be sure others are listening.
"Now, you're probably wondering what this has to do with the Whispering Way, which, as you know is our *true* reason for being here. Well, let me explain..."
Wren fluffs her feathers and continues.
"We know from Estovion's notes that the Whispering Way conspired to make the new packlord, Mathus Mordinracht, when he slew the previous packlord. I believe it was Mathus' pack that was just assaulting the stairs, and we killed them below. I believe the ones we just slew were from a rival pack...another indication of the civil war happening between the packs."
Wren pauses and then continues.
"And the reason why Mathus isn't considered to be the packlord? He didn't eat the heart, maybe? We read in Estovion's journal that Mathus, for some reason, isn't considered to be the true packlord. Perhaps because Mathus didn't eat the heart of the previous packlord? I think they fight because Mathus did not eat it, as Estovion's journal suggests? So where is the heart? Who has it?"
Wren looks around as the final questions are very important.
"Estovion suggests that the Whispering Way had their hand in Mathus' dealings...and the heart is missing, maybe. Who has the heart? Does the Whispering Way have it? And why would they? WHY?"
Wren nearly shouts her question to the temple, as if Desna could answer it now. Wren takes a moment to calm herself.
"Now, as we rise to up the Stairs of the Moon, we should think about the ritual that we have. The way we can commune with Desna or her allies. We should think about what we would ask of them...or what they may ask of us. Or we can decide to forgo the ritual, but we have many questions...or, at least, I do. Squawk!"
Hopefully, I got most of this right. If not, I trust the GM to correct a bit.
Vladlena |
Lena sits, trying not to ache.
Stop shouting, you birdbrained elf! It is obvious what they are doing. Either readying for a ritual or creating a magic item. Think of what they are taking.
Lena draws a line in the air, leaving a luminous mark for each point.
one, the spirit/soul of a good man, the guy who was in charge of the prison. Two, the seasage effigy, a ritual item if I have ever heard of one. and three, the heart of a werewolf king. she concludes with a third glowing strike.
The strokes glow for a few seconds and fade.
What is the motivation for all this? Well, what is the point of the whispering way. They seek to crack a prison open, I think. Or gain power so they can do it later. Whose prison? Where do you think they got the name 'whispering' from.
Lena pulls her knees up to her chin
they want to do something terrible. We have to stop them.
She looks at the stairs
Desna guide us. Maybe she can help
Arval Beyondane |
Arval sighs as Lena and Wren being to argue over what is going on. He walks over to Whiskey and asks him a question.
"Could you patch me up? I think we have the time since those two are busy with their chatter..."
Kawrock the Phoenix |
"So if we know what they have and what they plan to do with it. Then shouldn't our question be what do they still need?" Kawrock adds. "It would be nice to head them off instead of chasing behind them for once."
Wren the FeatherMage |
What is the motivation for all this? Well, what is the point of the whispering way. They seek to crack a prison open, I think. Or gain power so they can do it later. Whose prison? Where do you think they got the name 'whispering' from.
Wren looks around for the sound of the voice, eventually finding Lena.
"I'm glad you're following along, little chickadee," Wren chirps back. "You seem to understand. Now, how can we stop them? What is their next steps? I don't have the answer to that, let alone what our next move should be. However, we should ascend to see what happens above, at the top of the Stairs."
Wren looks around to make sure others understand, then waits for the party to move up the stairs.
Vladlena |
Lena waves. After you, flitterbird. After all, you're flying
With a twing of pain, lena gets up. Time to move. If Desna was granting requests, she was going to request an effective pain killer.
Then
hey weren't there archers still around?
Kawrock the Phoenix |
Kawrock peers out one of the windows to confirm that the Archers are still down below and not climbing the tower after them. "Good point, don't want to be interrupted during a complex ritual."
Eldon Appleton |
"Alright, I'm glad I did that story recap so everyone's aware of what's at stake!"
If anything points out Eldon didn't have any part in the recap, he ignores them.
"Shall we take the stairs this time?"
GM SpiderBeard |
No windows, you're actually open to the air up here - the rooftop is supported by columns.
Kawrock peeks out over the edge and certainly sees the archers below. Being well below a hundred feet below and in battle with the vollensags who are rushing the temple, they have completely ignored you and the battle at the top of the temple.
Let me know about any preparations before you go up the stairs and I'll move to the next scene.
Kawrock the Phoenix |
"Looks like we are safe for now." Kawrock says after confirming the archers are still below. "I'll keep watch as I have a few spells to slow anyone down if they decided to come up here."
Wren the FeatherMage |
"It's so nice that all you, my friends, are such good listeners."
Wren squawks as others prepare to go up the stairs to the top of the, uh, Stairs. When others are on their way up, Wren will use her still-active fly spell to go up the back side.
She draws her wand of magic missile. Moved Wren on map and ready to go.
Arval Beyondane |
Arval waits to be healed before setting off to the next floor. Nothing else to do as preparation he testily swings his sword a few times.
Kawrock the Phoenix |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Kawrock sheds a few tears onto Arval's wounds, leaving nothing but a few scars. "That should do for now. Just try to stay in one piece."

GM SpiderBeard |
I'll trust Whiskeyjack to knock off whatever spells/charges are necessary to heal up Arval.
With your loins appropriately girded, you head up to the Highthrone.
The stairs emerge onto a wide, circular platform at the top of the tower, standing almost one hundred and fifty feet above the forest floor. An arrangement of large menhirs and megaliths encircles the perimeter of the open-air observatory.
Before you stand two werewolves, a male and a female. They are waiting for you, and both snarl as they stare at you.
"I do not know who you are or how you got past the vilkacis, but you have interrupted a sacred rite to my people. I am Mathus Mordinracht, Packlord of Shudderwood and you will submit to me!"
He easily holds an enormous bastard sword in his hand with a dagger in his off hand, and looks at the five of you with an air of supreme confidence and danger. Locking eyes with Arval, he throws back his head and howls.
Intimidate DC 20: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21
Arval is intimidated and suffers a -2 to attacks, skill checks, and that sort of thing. They have not attacked yet. Map is updated, y'all are on the far right of the map, except for Kawrock who is on the lower level.
Arval Beyondane |
It has been used against me! Noooooo...
Arval feels cowed by the howl, not sure what to think of the animal. He does the only thing he knows best, fight. He moves forward and launches into a big attack on the wolf in front of him.

Wren the FeatherMage |
Moved Wren on map as she stated she was coming up the backside.
Wren glitterdusts the pair of w'wolves, not harming them, but wanting them to be glittery and pretty...so Arval can rip them apart if he chooses.
"Oh, this is Desna's temple, not yours. And would not want us submitting to you, " Wren chirps back.
Glitterdust, Will Save DC 19 vs. blind.
Vladlena |
Lena scowls, her head...body ache giving her a cranky disposition.
stupid wolfies. Fetch!
Words ripple out of her mouth and a ball of flames spits out, detonating behind the werewolves. Arval feels the heat of the blast, but is not burned. Te wolfs...the smell of burnt hair fills the air.

Arval roars and moves to charge, but the werewolves are quick. Wren, however, is quicker. An explosion of kaleidoscopic dust bursts into the eyes of Mathus and Cybrisa. Both of them yelp as they are blinded and begin clawing at their eyes. Mathus charges forwards anyways, swinging wildly at Arval. Arval easily parries several wild blows, but the huge werewolf bowls right into him, bites Arval, and brings him down to the ground!
Cybrisa in the back calms herself and throws back her head, howling at the top of her lungs! She then quickly chants a spell, protecting herself.
The group then burst into action.
Arval stands, taking advantage of his blind opponent before slicing him with his sword.
Eldon heals himself.
Kawrock stands guard.
Lena quickly whips up a fireball, scorching the two werewolves although they avoid the worst of it.
You hear a howl from up above, and down below, you see the four archers turn and start charging for the rooftop! They begin the laborious task of circling the enormous spiral staircase encircling the outsideo f the tower.

Wren and Whiskeyjack both hammer Mathus who howls miserably. The blinded werewolves continue to try and get something done as Cybrisa starts casting a spell, channeling divine energy. Mathus continues to wildly swipe and swing at Arval, cutting him twice.
On the stairs below, the charging werewolves stop, staring blankly at the wall of fire. They turn and start scrabbling up the side of the wall to the next level of stairs.
Lena sends out a fireball, which almost blasts Cybrisa off the side o the wall, completely fouling her spell. She finally gets the glitter out of her eyes, and stares at the group with fury. She throws back her head, howling at the top of her lungs and throwing her hands to the sky. The spattering rain increases wildly.

Mathus whimpers in fear as he is pumelled by Arval, the mighty werewolf now terrified and near-death and still blind from the glitterdust spell.
Kawrock circles over the climbing werewolves, and blasts one with a flame; he barely manages to cling on.
Mathus, cowed and near-death, stumbles back at Cybrisa's call. She quickly chants a spell and lays a hand on him. He then pulls out a potion and downs it.

GM SpiderBeard |
Yup. He's been taking a beating. Aso he can see this round finally.
Whiskeyjack, Lena, Arval, and Wren all leap upon Mathus. Two magic missiles send him staggering back before Arval cuts out his legs. Whiskeyjack then steps over the werewolf, who snarls defiantly. A crushing blow to the head puts him out of his misery.
Cybrisa quickly throws up her hands, and her lightning spell ceases.
"I surrender!"
End of Combat
Wren the FeatherMage |
"I surrender."
Wren clucks her disgust at Cybrisa as if trying to decide whether to accept her surrender or not. She flies to other side, near Kawrock to see the oncoming 'weres.
"If you surrender, call off the dogs," Wren chirps, still flying safely, but mindful that her magics will soon run out.
"Why should we spare you?"
GM SpiderBeard |
Cybrisa lets out three sharp howls from the top of the tower. The werewolves climbing up the side stop and snarl, looking at Kawrock and slowly moving back down, doing well to avoid the wall of fire.
Now Kawrock is out of combat.
"They've been told to disengage. The vollensag will keep them busy anyways."
Cybrisa begins to change form before you, and soon stands as a wiry, middle-aged woman with a shock of red hair and a woodsy look to her. Her manner of speaking is direct and simple.
"Mathus was Packlord, and now he is dead. I have no quarrel with you now and simply want what is best for my pack. Why are you here? Perhaps we can help each other."
Eldon Appleton |
Eldon scrapes his throat. "To make a long story short, I and my assistants are trying to locate the Whispering Way."
He then makes his short story long by giving Cybrisa a very detailed "summary" of all the events leading up to this moment, starting with how he met his good friend professor Petros Lorrimor a decade ago.
Kawrock the Phoenix |
Watching the werewolves retreat, Kawrock dismisses his fire wall spell and makes his way to the top of the tower. He lands as Eldon is busy rambling on about himself, which Kawrock has no problems with interrupting. "Where is the pack lord's heart? We heard it was not taken by Mathus as per your traditions."
Wren the FeatherMage |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Wren flutters and watches the w'wolves retreat and only then does she make contact with the Stairs of the Moon. She listens to Cybrisa's explanation.
"Yes, Cybrisa, your Malthus has done some bad things with some bad birds. We wish to know what happened," Wren caws and shakes her wand at Cybrisa. "We have no quarrel with your pack or any other, but when they attack us, we defend ourselves...not to mention the malice that Malthus has brought about."
Wren looks to see if Arval is still around or if he has surrendered to his own lycanthropy. She imagines how that observation might go:
Wren: "Arval, do you know you're turning into a wolf?"
Arval: "Yes, I am a were."
Wren titters to herself at something very funny.
