The old lady gladly hands out a few of her horseshoes to act as talismans against the evil spirits prevalent in Ustalav and promises they will keep you from harm as long as you believe in their power.
With the crowd dissipating slowly that you have been proved to be real, you gather your belongings and Talismans and make your way to the boarded up building in the middle of the town, it looks drab and dingy.
An ornate lantern hangs from a post in front of this derelict building. The doors and windows of the tavern are all boarded shut. Dozens of horseshoes are nailed to the front door, a cursory look around the Tavern shows that all of the windows are boarded which would take breaking though the Back door has no boards on it, most likely the result of the previous adventurer's meddling.
DC 15 strength check to force a window or the front door, or you can enter through the back

Alexis politely takes her "talisman," but informs the others when out of earshot that there is no true magic in the horseshoes.
Katarina Caverly
|
"Exactly," Katarina murmurs, carefully attaching her horseshoe to her belt. "Not to mention they can be thrown if needed, as the old woman demonstrated for us," she chuckles. "I'm betting we have better aim though!"
When they reach the site of the tavern, she can't help but cough to cover up the smile that threatens to creep across her face at the sight of all the horseshoes nailed everywhere.
"Back door then?"
Fauxish

KEE-YAH! (Strength check): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Fauxish's leg blurs. Her snap kick blows the front door open. She takes a place beside it and bows like a formal doorperson.
Katarina Caverly
|
"Orrrr we can go in the front since Fauxish opened it for us..." Katarina comments, eyes wide with surprise and a bit of awe.

Preparing to go round the back of the tavern, plans change however when Fauxish's powerful kick breaks through the door at the front of the Lucky lantern, causing splinters and horseshoes to litter the ground.
Fortunately, everyone in town gives the Tavern a wide berth so have not seen the criminal damage. Entering through the wrecked door, you find yourselves in the common room of the Tavern.
This musty common room is coated with thick layers of dust. Dozens of black candles, animal skulls, and occult idols are arranged as decorations through the room. One table near the center of the room is decorated with human skulls and a crystal ball. A spread of harrow cards lies face down on the table and two chairs are pulled up to it. One chair sits empty and the other holds a skeletal corpse.
Although the room seems empty at first, as you all step inside the common room, the candles all spontaneously light and a robed figure appears in the empty chair at the harrow table.
As you stare at the sudden appearance, the cowled figure speaks in a calm tone and gestures at the table.
"“Welcome, travelers. Have you come to seek the wisdom of my harrow reading? These are strange times and those without guidance risk great peril. Stand before my table and learn your fate.”

Stood in the entrance of the Common room, Alexis and Eldren try to address the hooded figure sat at the table, however there is no response and it seems to wait patiently for you to approach.

"Ye gods!" Katarina jumps with surprise as the candles flare to life and the robed figure appears. "I wasn't expecting that! Spirits and strange happenings aren't easy to get used to, even when you've got some of your own!"
As Eldren decides to brave sitting at the table, Katarina observes warily. "Be careful there Eldren. We don't know if this spirit is truly friendly or not."
Sethran-GM
|
As Eldren approaches the table and you all look on, the figure takes up the Harrow cards from the table and shuffles them expertly, laying down nine cards down into a square, forming three rows, as Eldren takes their seat. In obviously practiced ritual, the robed figure turns each card in turn, taking a pause after each row is revealed to explain the the meanings behind them.
“The Eclipse is strong in the past. This card represents loss of purpose. I see a curious creature that fell from its original path. Now it wanders blindly, far afield under shadows of the mind.”
“Ahhhh, The Midwife. She is a conduit of creation, but she does not create alone. I see a creature in the present that also creates many things. It dreams of strange places and uses its mind to make these places real. But The Midwife is misaligned. The world will not like what this creature makes.”
“The Carnival is a card of illusions and false dreams. Danger lies in your future, but it is not the danger you expect. The Carnival is the most important card for you because it is a card for fools. It was foolish to come here…”

The illusion disappears after interpreting the last cards, and the six skulls on the table animate and attack, two of them burst to flame and the others float menacingly.

"Ah! Watch yourselves!" Katarina cries as the skulls take to the air. Taking a quick step back from the table, she narrows her eyes at one of the flaming skulls - and as if in response, one of the nearby animal skulls suddenly launches itself at the fiery menace!

Katarina's Round 2
With a yelp of pain as the flaming skull singes her, Katarina instinctively steps back lest she get burned again. As she watches the other skulls fan out and square off with each of her companions she calls forth a shimmering shield of force to protect her.

Katarina backs away from her foe and quickly a shimmering force appears around her, seeking to protect her from further harm. Neither Alexis nor Theoden have much luck with the flailing, however Fauxish whirls into action, her first strike cracks the skull that had tried to latch on to her and her follow up kick runs across Alexis' face to shatter the next skull.
I will move the round on but Eldren still has their AoO. Alexis will also get one as the skull approaches on her.
The two skulls with flaming eyes begin to move up to the struggling Pathfinders, the one Katarina cracked seems to still be bent on revenge as it darts in to attack. The other skull floats to assault Alexis and her morningstar.

Alexis still has no luck with her morningstar and Fauxish, successful before is caught out by the nimble skull, missing it with her boot. Katarina fairs better and the rubble she launches from the table strikes a flaming skull dead on and it crumbles to dust.
Eldren also strikes out, but their blade misses too.

Showing the others how it is done, Fauxish's final blows crush the two remaining skulls, removing the immediate threat from the tavern of the common room.
Combat Over!
With the skulls dead, you notice that the table's elegance has faded and gone, revealing it to be no more than an Illusion. Sitting in the centre of the table is a Harrow deck, surrounded by a slight glow.
As you explore the rest of the tavern you find little more of interest, however at the back door you find a skeleton, likely of the adventurer who broke in some time ago. Wulfer’s bony hand still clutches a single harrow card he took from the reading table—the Demon’s Lantern, the card seems to react to the glowing Harrow deck.
Wulfer's body also carries seemingly unused equipment, though showing some signs of age, he wears leather armor, carries a masterwork rapier, and 2 vials of holy water.
You have completed part one, the Harrowing! I will update tomorrow after work to give you time to explore and interact.
Katarina Caverly
|
"Tch...what a poor fool to have come here alone," Katarina sighs when they come upon poor Wulfer's skeleton. "But look there, the cards are glowing and so is the one in his hand!"
Carefully, she kneels down and plucks the card out of the skeletal hand.
Alexis "The Odd" Trismegistis

Clutching her wounded hand and head, Alexis approaches the table with a noticeable deal more confidence, and pores over what she sees with her expertise in esoteric matters, checking the harrow deck against her own fine deck of cards.

Katarina grabs the card from the skeletal adventurer, it feels almost warm to the touch, there is power there but it feels spent for now. The card's back shows an elegant signature, peering at it you can make out the name 'Illrigarde'.
Alexis sets to examining the table and its contents, with her professional knowledge, she can tell that the table has been prepared by an expert Harrower, there are a few cards turned as if they were part way through the telling when something happened. The cards themselves are expertly made, bordered in silver and the inking still appears fresh despite the time they have been here.
She can also tell that indeed, the deck holds the essence of magic, in its loosest sense though is not something ahe can identify, it eould most likely need investigation by a master of the occult.
Alexis "The Odd" Trismegistis

"More than a game, this is the Harrow. These cards have the power to weave - or sometimes, seal - one's fate. Whoever set this table was an expert in their Art."

Feel free to keep roleplaying at the tavern, but you have found all you can so I will move on ^^.
Upon finding the Harrow Deck you gain the following ability once each that you can use in the following 5 adventures and it doesn't affect your chronicle sheet:
Draw from the Deck: You have recovered a psychically charged harrow deck, commonly used for telling fortunes. You can expend its remaining energy to draw a card at random as a standard action, and you gain a +2 enhancement bonus to the ability score that matches the suit of the card drawn until the end of the adventure. If you do not have a harrow deck available, instead roll 1d6 to determine the suit (1 is Strength, 2 is Dexterity, 3 is Constitution, 4 is Intelligence, 5 is Wisdom, and 6 is Charisma)
I will add the ability to the Campaign tab ^^
