That's...a big graveyard.

The graveyard explored, Shutai headed the town's former docks (M) to see if there anything left that could be of use or shed light on the situation.

Shelby moves along with Shutai and Hisoka, keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.

A naturally deep harbor has formed where the waters of the Steam River flow into Bunyip Bay to the west. Two ruined piers extend into the only relatively shallow portion of the harbor here, and clearly once served all of Brinewall as moorings for visiting ships. While both piers are now mostly collapsed, the westernmost one has what appears to be a relatively recent visitor: a Linnorm Kingdoms longship is tied to the pier. The longship seems relatively new, but the vessel is partially destroyed and half-sunken. A search of the ship reveals significant damage to the ship in the form of tremendous claw marks and what appear to be scorch marks from a powerful electrical attack.

"That doesn't look good," Shutai murmured as she glanced at the remains of the boat. "I wonder if they're the people who are maintaining the graveyard? If they buried there dead there..." Of course, it still begged the question - who had attacked them in the first place?

Looking at the claw marks and the magical damage to the ship, Shelby decided she wanted no part of what had destroyed the ship. Since the Northerners hadn't shown themselves at this point, she assumed they likely were dead or fled.

She offers a non-committal shrug to Shutai, clearly not believing the Northerners to be the caretakers of this place. Still, one never knew. She'd much rather face people than whatever had destroyed the ship.

Shelby starts to walk around the small bay, heading towards the group of buildings opposite the small group.

Shutai followed along, wary of the Northern warriors - and whatever had gutted there ship.


As you head down, you pass through the ruins of barracks, a smithy, several homes, a glassworks (with several architectural designs similar to those of the larger glassworks in Sandpoint owned by Ameiko Kaijitsu), a trading post, and a stable. None of them seem to have been taken care of - or occupied. If there are any answers in this town, they're only likely to be found at the top of the hill - in Brinewall Castle.

Shutai glanced at the rather foreboding castle. "Well, it was a try to find our answers in town." Shrugging, Shutai turned and started along the path up to the fortified hill top.

Shelby nods at Shutai's words. "Of course. And if we had not searched, then there would surely be something coming to harass our flanks and rear at the least opportune time. Let us continue to the Castle proper."


Brinewall Castle is a large, intimidating structure. Although only two stories tall (with the exception of one three-story tower), the squat castle looks all the larger for its position atop the bluff west of the village, looming over the surrounding region with a commanding presence. The castle is built of gray stone, though close inspection reveals numerous different types of stone were used in its construction.

The only way into the castle seems to be through the old, rusted gates out front - iron is still a tough material, but with enough force, it's definitely something that can be broken.

Glad that she had put so much effort into building up her physical might and endurance, Shelby charged forward, lowering her armored shoulder as she drove her legs forward, calves and quads working in harmony to clear the obstruction from the small group's path.

After removing the obstacle, the Iomedaean drew her sword and shield and led the way deeper into the complex...

Watching the gate get mangled, Shutai was once again impressed by Shelby's strength. It was always fun to see her work. Hopefully the castle wouldn't be too dangerous, as nothing could get in or out through that gate.

Her balance all wrong, Shelby barely manages to nudge the gate. Her brow furrows with both embarrassment and frustration.


As Selbarina appeared, noises could be heard from inside the gates of the building - and out from the depths of the guard post came two heavily-muscled figures with raven heads that started making deep, raspy cries of alarm. They didn't attack - there wasn't much need to, given that they were on the other side of the gates - but you'd definitely been noticed.

Shutai turned her attention to the people. Tengu? It sounded like the description she'd heard - humanoid birds - but she wasn't very sure.

"Hello," she said as she took a step back from the gate. "We didn't know that anyone was still here within the castle. We thought it was deserted. My name is Shutai. This is my sister, Shelby, and my friend Hisoka. Would you mind if we talked to you, or whoever is in charge here?"

Shutai's efforts at diplomacy were extraordinary. There was just one small little problem - neither of them looked like they'd understood a thing she said, and while their hostility had lessened slightly - body language was a thing - it was quite clear that you remained unwelcome.

Shutai considered, and repeated her question in both Fey and Tian, hoping one of the tongues would be understood by the creatures.


The two merely continued snarling - they recognized you were trying to talk to them, but neither language was proving at all effective.

"I'm afraid I do not. Not that would help us here, at any rate. I'm not even sure I know what these things are. What should we do now? It seems without a method of communication we will remain unwelcome guests, likely even if we had one."

The whole situation had him itching for a blade in his hand, but caution and self-preservation kept his hand from the hilt at his waist.

Hisoka deliberated, his hand resting on the hilt of his damaged katana as his fingers tap lightly on steel. "We'd searched before and found nothing right? Unless we think we can sneak in when night falls, entering now is our only option, unless we head back to camp and tell the others of our friends here. Assuming they don't attack us, of course."

The tapping ceases, and realization and excitement mark his face as he regards the others. "Would either of you have a spell to mend my blade? I have the two others, but this one has always served me well and the weight suits me better."

Nodding, Shutai replied, "Yes, the same spell I used on the key should work here. I think heading back and mentioning our friends here, the ship and possibly showing Koya the graveyard."


Heading back certainly doesn't seem like it would be a problem, if you'd rather not break into the castle right now. Of course, it's not clear what might happen to Ameiko if she's left as she is for too long... but if that's a chance you're willing to take, you could certainly rest and come back later.

"But what of Ameiko? We need to find out what's going on before she gets worse." Hisoka gives a last glance to their new friends before turning and trying the door himself, getting a running start before ramming his shoulder into it with a loud crash.

There was a brief groan from the old gate... then it buckled in and shattered under the force of Hisoka's blow - and the two odd creatures behind it wasted no time at all in preparing to attack.

Backing away, Shutai glanced at the two creatures. She didn't like doing it, but she prepared to fight them. Snow and ice formed around her fingers, and she hurled it at the first creature.

Let's kick this back into high gear, then!

Shutai's snowball was an easy hit - Hisoka's slash wasn't quite as perfect, but it still landed and did plenty of damage to the unusual creatures. With loud, angry sounds, the two promptly retaliated - one moving enough to close in on Shutai, the other raking at Hisoka.

Two of their strikes came close to landing, but none of them were able to get through your guard - and working carefully, you were able to finish them off a moment later. That left the gatehouse clear for exploration - and provided access to the inside of the keep.

Sighing, Shutai watched as the creatures dropped. Not the result she had wanted, but effective none the less. She kneeled, checking the bodies for any useful items or information.

The two avian creatures don't seem to be carrying anything at all - no weapons, no tools, no armor. Apparently, their physical bodies were judged sufficient to deter most would-be intruders (and truthfully, they probably were - an ordinary human wouldn't have lasted very long at all against them).

Rising, Shutai moved to the entrance they were protecting, and looked around. Hopefully she could get some idea of the layout, and any locations which might lead to the cure for Ameiko.

The other side of the gatehouse - unlocked - leads into a much larger area. The barren courtyard of hard-packed earth ahead of you contains clumps of tough-looking weeds, furrows in the ground as if made by taloned feet, and chalky white mounds of dung the size of human heads. There's a large pair of what look to be main doors straight ahead of you, as well as several other doors scattered around the area.

Shutai nodded to Hisoka and then at the dung. Something big enough to have droppings the size of a man's head was not something she wished to have too many dealings with. Then she gestured to the doors - which one?

His hand resting with his suspicions on the hilt of his wakizahi, Hisoka nods to their right as he takes the lead, doing his best to stay somewhat silent as he makes his way to the first door.

First door on the right... that's on the outer wall.

This cramped room contains several old crates and barrels covered with thick layers of dust. Most notably, there's a lot of old battlefield debris here - spilled arrows, ruined longbows, ancient bloodstains, and so on - making it clear that at one point, there'd been a rather large battle going on.

There's nothing else of interest or value in this chamber - it's been abandoned for a long time, and anything genuinely valuable was probably taken during the fighting.

The next door clockwise is where you entered. Then a side door to the entrance area. Then another guard tower area similar to the first. Finally, you wind up going through some larger doors on the western side of the area.

The walls of this wooden stable are gray with age and sag ominously, yet the building seems relatively sound. An old forge sits to the south, while five empty horse stalls stand to the north.
