GM Lareg |
The mepit nods, a leathery guffaw echoes from its throat as it gestures toward Pent.
"A clever e*$4xdi. A e*$4xdi all the same. Pausing It became mine. Now, unless you have an offering to give you must leave. No matter how clever you are."
Amiamble Piddlespot |
Ami stares at the little thing, squeezing his eyes between his scarf slits. He looks at his brother.
Mahdi al-Jabira |
Kn Planes: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Mahdi doesn't really WANT to give the wand back-- it would be so much fun to use-- but he gives a little flick of his fingers of assent when Pent looks his way.
That said, his eyes narrow on the little earth creature.
"Who are you calling an e*$4xdi?" he says hotly. Mahdi plants his fists on his hips. "You are a small, and arrogant, little കറുത്തിരുണ്ടതായി സുബൈറിന്റെ."
"And I am a master of fire, and I go where I wish."
Mahdi reaches his hand into his spell component pouch and pulls out a light brown crystal, the size of a child's fist.
"Do you know what this is?!" he demands of the mephit. "Eh? This is an elemental from the plane of earth, far bigger and stronger than you! If I can hold it in the palm of my hand, who are you to demand offerings of me?"
Mahdi is not lying; they found an earth elemental gem a while ago and I don't believe it ever got sold; Mahdi greedily hung onto it. Of course, the mephit may not believe him regardless, but he will try an according Intimidate:
Intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11
GM Lareg |
The mephit looks with surprise at Mahdi, hungrily eyeing the gem.
"What an offering that would make. Might you have less precious gems or metal you, a lord such as yourself, to part with instead? If you aren't willing to part with that of course."
Mahdi al-Jabira |
"Are you DEAF?" shouts Mahdi, ever-the-soul-of-tact. "I have just said I am too puissant and preeminent to give offerings. Clean the ash from your ears."
He pauses. The mephit did just call him a lord. "Of course....
"I might, perhaps, surrender a token of my largesse," Mahdi says modestly, examining his fingernails as he tucks the gem away once more. "I can be generous."
He slings his pack around and pokes inside for his money pouch, fingers pawing through the clinking coins. He fishes out a heavy coin that is silvery and lustrous, though it isn't silver, and holds it up to catch the light.
(Lareg: I never narrated it, but I sort of would assume Mahdi would have converted some of his raw coinage wealth to platinum, or that they would have gotten platinum coins and/or tradeable gems when they sold off items. Mahdi is certainly not carrying around 3000 pieces of gold, at any rate, so either he left the bulk of his money back home, or he has a platinum coin on hand, if permitted. If he has a platinum coin, that is what he is offering. If he doesn't, then I suppose he is scraping through his purse trying to see if he brought ten gold coins with him. :P)
"Observe my generosity. Well?"
GM Lareg |
This all seems fine to me. For the purposes of solid role-play I pretty much let any 'back log' stuff go few to no questions asked.
The mephit, looks shockingly at the shining coin. Drool begins to drip from his chin as he stares, mouth agape at Mahdi's hand. He scrambles to collect himself, bounding to the table - turning around numerous times to bow toward Mahdi. He grabs the wand and slowly approaches Mahdi.
"What a generous offering. I must show my thanks Lord... He looks disappointingly toward the ground, bowing humbly. I'm afraid I do not know your name Oh exalted one. Let me show my thanks. He rests the wand at Mahdi's feet, taking only short glances up.
Aldebert Piddlespot |
Aldebert, not even realizing he was tensing - ready for combat - relaxes at the little creature's statements.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
He smiles, Mahdi's found a friend! First the egg, and now a little creature. Eventually maybe he'll befriend a dragon, won't that be something.
He turns to his brother and says,
He sits atop Gretiem and watches, politely saying nothing that would hamper Mahdi's negotiation.
Pent Arotha |
Pent looks up at Mahdi, nodding in approval. "Well said, Maddie. You are very good at making sure folks know when their office is well below yours. Since you seem to have this affair locked up, could you get him to apologize for calling me a e*$4xdi? That's only formality, of course, but when you're in good with the bigger hen, sometimes it's good for the runt to feel the peck. Makes it easier the next time we cross paths. Might not hurt to smooth the rock to a polish for calling him a 'blacky peb', either. It's just good form, unless you eventually seek to rule by fear, sans respect." Pent looks Mahdi over curiously, before turning to the halflings.
"As for you two, you're not speaking ill about the rock, so why do you conspire with your half-words? I could understand you talking about attacking the creature outright in code, so you can get the jump on him/her/it, but anyone listening to you who doesn't speak your lingo is going to think you're insulting someone and you've not got the balls to say it in an understandable and actionable way." The gnome reaches down to adjust his beads, then returns to his crack.
While Mahdi is engaging the mephit, Pent examines the fissure with something in it, because loot.
GM Lareg |
The mephit tries not to be distracted from Mahdi as Pent looks into the fissure.
Pent Arotha |
Pent gathers up the contents, casually, like he's sizing up a melon for its ripeness, or he's rolling an egg for its worth. He strolls over to the table, and lays it all out, before turning to Mahdi and the Mischievous Mephit. Sold at your local bookstores...
"What do you think, Maddie? There's some good stuff here, looks like. Wonder what the ring does..." Pent slobbers all over it, before examining it less properly. Cast Detect Magic
Spellcraft, Ring: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Spellcraft, Dagger: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Amiamble Piddlespot |
Ami waits to watch Mahdi and his unusual ability to make friends faster than Pent can chase them away.
Pent Arotha |
"How's he do it? Likely with candles all about the room, and his chest hair on fire. Aldi probably leaves the lights out, and has to kick the gecko outta bed. Oh wait, that's right. He stables his beast like a proper mount." Pent waves off the mephit.
"He's talking all about my fellows' sex lives, so this time he's right to keep his tongue speaking half-words. I just thought I'd give you some insight about the inappropriateness of the halfs and their talk, so best ignore them, and deal with the Man of Fire, here." Pent shoots Ami and Aldi a stink eye.
Otah Cragsmith |
Otah listens as Mahdi speaks, relaxing as the creature appears to be non-threatening. His eyes roll so far the back of his head, threatening permanent blindness, as Mahdi rambles on about his self-importance. "Just like home..."
"Are you a lord of some place, master of fire?"
He strides up to the table and examines the contents the gnome has laid on the table. "Does that taste good, little one?"
Pent Arotha |
"Does that taste good, little one?"
"Well, it tastes genuine, like the metal on exterior runs throughout. That's a rough guess, but it didn't bend when I bit, so it's not made of cheaper stuff to fool the eye. I'd say 'genuine' is 'good'. So yeah, tastes good." Pent ruffles through items, trying to decide what comes next.
"You want a taste? I hear dwarves can figure out a metal's make just by sticking it up their arse, so I'm glad I tried my luck first if you're gonna take your turn next. Just remember what I told you about tying string to your bits. You shove this ring up your ring, it's like not to come out until you need to pass a stool, so tying a string to the ring should do the thing, when you're ready to tug."
GM Lareg |
The mephit becomes increasingly agitated, hesitantly placing up at Mahdi several times.
Amiamble Piddlespot |
Ami looks at Pent, wondering how an adherent of the Sun God would twist her teachings to include robbing someone at the same time befriending them.
Aldebert Piddlespot |
Aldebert, feeling a little bombarded by Pent and his brother's chatter - and all else going on in the room, sighs and shakes his head, trying to clear it.
Just a moment later, "No, No, Pent shouldn't be digging through our new, er, ally's? things."
"Pent, put that down a second. These things might be our new friends and we're just pawing all over them. And as for language, I just talk in whatever language is convenient, it's nothing more sinister than that."
He turns to his brother, "Pent does have a point though brother. Others might not know we're just chatting."
He sighs and hopes Mahdi can make it all right with their new little friend.
Pent Arotha |
Pent sets down the stone dagger, just before Aldebert suggests the action. "None of it's magical, only the chickenfoot stick. The lapis is quite pretty, though." Pent taps the table, and looks over the mephit, then back at the halfling. "And this one here's no friend of mine, what with his namecalling and failing to apologize for it. You're far too generous with what constitutes friendship, Aldi. Glad you don't look over my personal share of the monies, otherwise you'd be giving it away to the next Thomas, Richard, or Harris that insults you." The gnome turns back to the mephit.
"You said you came to claim these namesakes, as they just became yours. That sounds like you robbed corpses unable to express their dismay at you claiming them for your own, or you ransacked places that weren't doing anything with them at the moment. It sounds like that to me, but is that right, or do I have it wrong? Where did you come by all these trinkets?" Pent picks up the ring, spitshines it, then sets it down again.
"Sorry, Maddie. Perhaps you'd like to run the inquisition."
GM Lareg |
The mephit gives a slight nod at Pent's suggestion that the objects have been obtained from the dead. It is careful to stay kneeling before Mahdi.
Mahdi al-Jabira |
Sorry, I go to sleep and wake up to 14 posts!
Mahdi can't help a beaming smile at the bowing mephit. See? See!? This is how everyone should treat him. Life would be great for all concerned. Also they should give him magic wands. Good plan. He tosses the coin to the creature.
"Ah, yes. I am..." (dramatic pause) "Mahdi al-Jabira, Lord of Fire. You may kiss my ring. Its flame will not burn you, for you are marked by my favor," he says grandiosely, hand with his blazing ring extended.
As the other items aren't magical, he feels no particular need to obtain them.
"Now. What is your name, favored one, and do you regret calling us e*$4xdi?
GM Lareg |
The mephit scrambles to do as he's been asked.
"Lord Jabira Carefully kissing Mahdi's ring. Pardon me my lord. I was speaking only of your small servant. I Andgronakraks would never use such words to describe your greatness. Excitedly gesturing toward the tunnel ahead. You must be presented to the other lords. They will wish to share news of the outsiders."
Pent Arotha |
"Small... serve... I don't even... you daft little... I serve someone far greater than Maddie here... no offense, Maddie, but you don't hold a candle to Sarah... goddess's honest truth..." Pent crosses his arms, and looks up at Maddie, interested in his next words and actions.
Mahdi al-Jabira |
Mahdi beams at the deferential attention from the mephit. He's been waiting his whole life for someone to recognize his genius...
Unholy glee lights his face at hearing Pent referred to as his 'small servant'. He grins, and opens his mouth to expound upon that-- then notices the way Pent is looking at him.
Mahdi makes a will save?: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
.....ugh. Consciences are annoying. Ugh, fine, Pent, stop giving him that look.
"He is... not actually my servant," Mahdi says with a put-upon sigh. "If he were, he would not be allowed to talk so much. Anyway, he is my... companion on the road, and I won't have him referred to as a e*$4xdi. But enough of that.
"Andgronakraks: tell me of these other 'lords'. Are they people of flesh, like myself? Small like you? Bigger than me? Answer fully with all you know of them, and perhaps I will again be generous."
GM Lareg |
With a slight bow, Andgronakraks rises and backs slowly away - in deference to Mahdi.
"My pardon lord.. looking toward Pent and the others. They are then lords like yourself? shaking his head I will do as you've asked. The other lords are much like the creature there. Anndgronakraks points toward Gretim Though they stand like you and look a bit like you. Looking excitedly toward the passages. Shall I fetch them or take you to them?"
Mahdi al-Jabira |
Hmmm. Lizard-like, but standing and talking? Mahdi darts a glance at the others.
Kn Local?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
"Lizard-folk, perhaps?" Mahdi hazards a guess, sotto voce, to the others. "Well, shall we follow, and meet them?"
I don't want to railroad the rest of the group (even if Mahdi totally does), so if there's any objections, disregard the next bit:
"Yes, lead on, we will meet these lords!" Mahdi says, tucking the chicken-foot wand into his belt and patting it with wizardly happiness. He fishes out another few coins in order to be able to dispense his 'largesse' at an appropriate moment.
Pent Arotha |
Fortissimo, Pent claps Mahdi on the back. "Ayup!! Let's go meet the Geckomen! This should prove interesting, if only for the audience you're about to entertain. Whatever you do, Maddie, just remember there are five of us. If there are more than five of them, we're going to need to assess things right quick, in case we need to excuse ourselves."
Amiamble Piddlespot |
Ami is still shocked and it would show on his face, would that you could see it.
He is willing to follow Mahdi and new friend and gets behind Aldebert like they usually do.
Ami looks at Yeen, knowing the cat likes to eat lizards as much as everything else.
GM Lareg |
Additional terrain revealed on Roll20.
Andgronakraks turns toward the passage ways, looking at each as he thinks aloud.
"Now that one is a dead end. Nothing but the corpse of a small one stuck in the rock. Pointing toward passageway 2. That one is tricky to go through. Pointing toward the unlabeled passage. Best to go that way." Pointing toward passage 3.
Pent Arotha |

"Lord Maddie, DoorMatty. You should let the halflings and the dwarf go first, just in case. All the talk of lizards, and I'd like to have plenty of distance between me and a sticky long tongue shooting out from between the stalagmites. The way Getyourrocksoff is talking, we might be coming up on a Salamander. I don't know enough of 'em, but they don't sound friendly to fleshies." Pent keeps a healthy distance back.
GM Lareg |
This curving, gravel-strewn passage widens as it slopes upward. Several jets of orange flame light the rocky hall with hellish color and dancing shadows, revealing a flat landing near the slope’s middle. The contents of several scorched cauldrons bubble and hiss upon the platform, each balanced on ironwork stands. Beyond the cauldrons, the passage continues.
A 6-foot-long creatures swings an iron spear —its blackened humanoid upper body tensing with each swing. It seems oblivious to your entrance as it makes precise strikes, attacking and defending against an imaginary opponent near the landing’s western edge.

Ami looks at Mahdi, wondering if he should be worried or worried-worried.
Moved Ami up passage 3.
Aldebert Piddlespot |
Aldebert also moves into the room, but stays just behind and to the right of Mahdi - ready to intercede if things go poorly, but trying to stay in a 'secondary' position to him.
He watches to see what happens, unconsciously leaning forward in his saddle a little.
Pent Arotha |
Pent leans in to whisper to Mahdi. "Uh, yeah, that's what I worried 'round. You've got yourself one of those Salamanders, Maddie. If you think you'll be able to talk with it, that's one thing. If you think you'll be able to dominate it, that's another thing. OH! That reminds me!! I need to get cracking on that list a mine, you know, regarding the Emir?? Can't believe I hadn't finished that... Perhaps now is not a good time, but you've done me the favor of reminding me, so you have my thanks."
"So, LordDoormatty, you gonna try and talk to it?"
Mahdi al-Jabira |
What does Mahdi know about salamanders: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13 ...not a hell of a lot, ha.
Somehow, Mahdi has studied the plane of fire without ever getting into the topic of salamanders overmuch. Perhaps his master knew that such creatures would only inflame (ha) his apprentice's curiosity, and ripped out some pages of the book, or something. Mahdi's vaguely aware they exist, but...
He tries not to let on his ignorance, because it would be unthinkable for the gnome and one half of the halflings to know more about creatures of fire than he does.
He does frown and let Otah and Aldebert get a few steps ahead of him, though (if they're willing).
When he sees the salamander practicing, Mahdi pauses a moment. "...looks like they, ah, drill well. Um. Be ready if this goes poorly," he says, and wipes his sweaty hands on his robes before clearing his throat.
"Greetings, warrior!" he calls... and then repeats it in Ignan, too.
GM Lareg |
The creature looks over, as if covering his surprise, he assumes a threatening posture - doing his best to seem intimidating. Amid the words you recognize the same deragatory term Andgronakraks used earlier.

"The Geckoman is tryin' to talk us down, callin' us ashy. That's all he's got?! So many more words, and you choose 'ashy'. You could have chosen 'stigdotilient', or 'rhabdomyclulis', but no... you musta started at the beginning of your encyclopaedic knowledge of your ignarant language. Now hush up. Lord here wants a word with you. Just words, no weapons. We've got weapons too, we just don't want to use them here. Unless we have to use them. Do we have to use 'em, or can we excuse them for a moment's peace, and talk this out? You don't look like a talker. And you're alone, which makes it easier for us to begin by asking if you're a talker, since we're in the dominant position here. We outnumber you, by a lot. You're the equivalent of our gecko, and the gecko knows enough to assume the bit. I'm thinking we'll abstain from trying to bridle you, more out of respect than you not passing our strict standards about our mounts. I miss my camel."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
Amiamble Piddlespot |
'I miss my camel'?!
Ami stares dumbfounded at the gnome, readying his weapons for the sure-to-be-ensuing combat.
I miss my camel?!
Ami looks at his brother and keeps Yeen calm while waiting for Mahdi to answer.
Mahdi al-Jabira |
Lareg: What is the result or goal of the salamander's Intimidate check? A 16 is a success against Mahdi, at least (DC would be only 15 for him), but is this to instill the shaken condition, or more the "force a creature to act friendly towards him", or something else entirely? Mahdi was likely to mouth off to the salamander here, as he is tired of being called an ashling and has that Pride drawback after all, but if the Intimidate check is mechanically forcing him into "playing nice", I'm not quite sure I can do my original plan, etc. I'll go ahead and post as Mahdi's personality bids, but can change stuff as needed.
There's a beat of silence after Pent finishes his words (well, from Mahdi at least).
"...You know," Mahdi says, slowly, "he might not speak Taldane. I sort of hope he doesn't, for calling him a 'gecko' is hardly a good opening."
After chiding Pent for his rudeness, Mahdi then proceeds to launch into his own MUCH MORE TACTFUL* greeting-- a stream of popping and hissing words, in the language of fire.
Mahdi's voice picks up volume as he speaks, and he finishes with his hand (the one with the fiery ring, of course) thrown up in the air and a jet of fire erupting from it to sear the cavern ceiling overhead (or at least 20 feet up).

Mahdi al-Jabira |
Mahdi's face colors with the salamander's retort. "No, we'll teach YOU!" he retorts in the common tongue. "Battle, my friends!"
Given that salamanders are, at least by their description in the bestiary, actively sort of on fire ('Spines of crackling flame dance along the creature's blackened, fiery-red scales.'), I'm hoping it is not metagaming for Mahdi to reasonably guess they would be immune to fire, despite his failed knowledge check. If Mahdi has to spend a round and a spell discovering that, though, that's fine. So, if he doesn't know they're immune, his action this turn would be to conjure a flaming sphere on top of Sally, and then panic as it has no effect. If, on the other hand, he is smart enough to realize a lizard dwelling in a hot environment with fire dancing over its body is immune to fire... he does this instead:
A pool of oily slickness erupts around the salamander's feet as Mahdi gestures and shouts. Casting Grease. I'm not sure if the map on Roll20 is the salamander map or not? If so, Mahdi wouldn't be standing out in front, as he was trying to let Otah and Alde take the lead, and he would also be staying with the group, as opposed to a bit strung out as we are. Anyway, he will try and put the grease to the back of the salamander (i.e., so the salamander is on the forward edge of the grease, and our melee critters do not need to wade through grease to get adjacent).
Salamander must make a Reflex save DC 15, or fall prone, etc.
That done, Mahdi... scurries quickly behind Otah, cursing vociferously to himself and drawing his crossbow. He cannot burn creatures immune to fire, so he is... about to be useless.
I'll move behind Otah if we are indeed in our current map positions. Is Androgronaks still around?
GM Lareg |
Mahdi wouldn't know, but Pent knows about the fire immunity. I'm fairly sure Ami made the knowledge roll also. In any case I think it is fair to say one of them warned you not to use fire after your initial display of intimidation. I'll try to update the Roll20 map tonight.
The salamander just manages to stay on his feet, quickly moving toward Pent and attacking with his spear, which misses widely. Andgronakraks stand by, mouth agape at the turn of events.

And with that, he.... runs away. Well, kinda. Mahdi slips through the bodies of his friends and... up the wall, because when you're a squishy person, it's a bad thing to be so close to angry things with spears.
Mahdi has slippers of spider climbing, so he's just going to take the withdraw action and try and get up the right-hand wall. He would LIKE to be out of spear stabbing range, but if the ceiling is not high enough for that, he will make do.
