Haleen seems quite overwhelmed with the demand for trade. She laments aloud to Ami her concerns.

"And yet the gnolls still travel the roads, making safe transport of goods nearly impossible. Smiling at Ami and ruffling Yeen's back. It is good news to hear more have been sent to their maker. I am sure the two of you could clear the roads if a great destiny did not call to you. We simply need more people. Strong arms to help guard the roads. Perhaps then the fleeing gnolls would think twice before showing such interest in raiding the goods they make there way here?"

With Ami and Aldebert

Mahdi nods to Aldebert, taking the pearl and tucking it away safely in a pocket in his robes. "Of course, of course. I'm sure it will come in handy," he purrs, happy to not have to be writing more scrolls out. His hand cramps so. Pearl of Power from Alde, noted!

When the other halfling shares the excited news of what more he's learned of Kakishon, Mahdi listens broodingly, his fingers steepled in front of his face. "This is.... very important," he mutters. "I think.... I think we should tell Almah. I would not wish anyone else in the town to know of it, but Almah is still technically our employer, and if we can't trust her... I think if we impress upon her the sensitivity of this information, and that every trade prince from here to Katapesh would want in if it became known, that she will know to guard her tongue. Still, if the two of you think that the knowledge is best kept just to us for now, I won't argue."

After all, Mahdi thinks-- better to not have to share some cut of the treasures of Nex himself with Almah. Nice as she is.

**

With Zanphir

Mahdi does his best to try and read glimpses of the pages of the book the other man holds, like a child trying to read around his parent's hands or similar. At the compliment (well, Mahdi is taking it as a compliment, anyway), the fire-mage smiles modestly ('modestly') and buffs his fingernails on his robes.

"Formerly a gnoll-fortress," he corrects primly. "We've claimed it for ourselves, of course, and in the future I have high hopes of renovating the place to something a bit more suitable. A nice academy, perhaps. Once I'm ready to retire and rest on my laurels and become a headmaster." Mahdi gives a small laugh, as if to suggest that time won't be any time soon.

"But you say it was the object of a search of yours?"

***

Mahdi would like to try and find and purchase a headband of vast intelligence among the new merchants of town (a 4,000 GP purchase; I don't know if the town supports that yet). He'd also seek out to try and purchase some scrolls, which I'll list in a day or two (still looking up stuff he'd want). The third thing he wants to do is check on the emir, Haidar Yunan, a were-leopard the party found and attempted to cure some time ago. Among other things, Haidar is/was a military adviser, and Mahdi thinks it would be fantastic if that man's skills could be put to work in helping the town militia be better trained/helping secure the region.

However, I'm not actually sure what the situation is with the emir right now. I've tried before to narrate Mahdi checking on him and trying to find out if the party's attempt to cure him was successful, but I think it's always slipped through the cracks and never been addressed.

"Apologies Piddlespot, I know none. At least, not here, in this place. But that doesn't mean we can't go find some."

Otah will go through any open tavern-like establishments, drinking and observing the clientele, keeping an eye out for bards who try to ply their trade in such places. At least, that's where the stories say he's likely to find bards not currently on a quest.

Any he finds, he tries to recruit into spreading word of the need for jobs and able-bodied workers in Kelmarene during their travels.

The dwarf will also spends some evenings consulting his journal and is struck by inspiration upon reflection. We need bodies to guard caravans and the city streets. Bodies we don't have. When will more arrive? Prepare in advance dwarf.

If it doesn't already exist...
Otah starts moving to get the area to build a barracks and training ground, as well as tasking smiths to make an armory and practice armory for a small contingent of guard.

He returns to the compound at night and decompresses his frustration with the situation with Mahdi and his smaller friends. "How do you all find the energy to deal with.... people?

Maps: Travel * Hut and more

In short order Otah encounters Felliped, who other members of the group have encountered before. The man has a very worn and weathered look about him. His face still seems to show signs of his captivity, but he seems filled with great joy. It may be the drink, or it may be the reception his tales are given by the merchants at the tavern.

Working on dusting off details for the emir. The stuff from before I took over always trips me up. Hope to get at the details better this time around.

For the record, I'm not expecting you to have intimate knowledge of every detail of what went on with the emir; when I've linked back to specific posts it's an attempt on my part to help you relevant stuff quickly, not my saying you need to read through the whole backstory. ;) I'm happy to provide a short summary of who the emir is and what the party's interactions with him have been so far, if that would be helpful to you, rather than making you try and find stuff.

Ami immediately looks around for a source of twine to wind around the pearl.

Aldebert laughs and fishes in his pockets for something brightly colored. ”Oh, Ami. My mistake. That is not for Yeen, that was for you. But if you cannot use it, allow me to get you something better for Yeen. I’ll be back tonight.”

Aldebert buys the brightest, most colorful scarf or feather he can find in all the marketplaces, and hangs onto the pearl.

"Mahdi, is there a way we can discern more about this thing without Almah's help? I am wary of sharing the information of this scroll to anyone just now. I don’t understand it, but it seems over-powerful and worth direct investigation before we talk about it publicly.”

”I trust Almah, but she has advisors whom she would surely consult. Pretty soon those advisors are going to talk among themselves, and with their assistants. Before you know it, everyone knows. Besides, what are we going to tell her? We found a world? I mean, I don’t really know what you two are talking about.”

”Makes me nervous…”

GM Lareg:
Can I obtain my Mithral Full Plate (10,500gp) at this time? I can scratch together the funds by borrowing from my brother, and possibly Otah, but I wanted to see if I could get it done first.

Also, I have the spell Timely Inspiration. According to the message boards (link) it's a +1 from level 1-4, +2 from level 5-9 and +3 from level 10+. That seems to make some sense, but I wanted to know how you wanted to rule it. Thanks!

For sure Mahdi. Links are a great help. Just have to make sure I don't flub any NPC specifics that might come into play in current / future books of the AP, which means going back to AP book one for specifics.

Emir details?:

To save time, let me double check with you all. I am quite sure I have never followed up on the emir, though the inquiry has come up before. I think I am misremembering having him despondently lay about, safe enough to be kept under guard by Almah, but far from cured.

Aldebert:
Though the craftsman to make such armor exist, the only mithril in the settlement was recovered from the mail adjusted for Ami. They wonder, "Perhaps your friend the dwarf might be able to talk with the dwarven merchants? It is rumored the dwarves may know of a vein not far away. There is always the city of Katapesh, there are few places the match the goods found there."

Mahdi mulls over the brothers' misgivings. "Very well," he says eventually. "Perhaps we can wait, for now. But I think ultimately she'll have to know... or we run the risk of her discovering it and thinking we've kept it to ourselves for purpose of profit."

He tucks away the pearls that have been given him now by both brothers. "For now, I'll bid you good night... I have much to do these days."

Aldebert seeks out Otah.

"Otah my good man, do you have any contact with your other kin here in town? I have need of many pounds of mithral and cannot find a local source. I've bought some, but it's barely enough for a glove of the armor I intend to have made."

"I'm hoping not to have to go all the way to Katapesh, but it's looking like that may be required." he smiles weakly, "I don't have all the cash needed either, but it seems the harder problem is going to be acquisition."

The Emir:
Since the emir's recovery he has not been the same. Though not dangerous, the guards tell you he is apt to break into fits of rage when disturbed. The rage of an old man who seems to have forgotten some part of himself seems to dominate him for much of his waking hours. Disturbing dreams seem to dominate his sleep. He has not seriously hurt anyhow, but he is far from his normal sell. The last time the party visited he remembered and even thanked you. For days he was better than before, the memory of hope seemed to bolster him. The news this time around is not much different. Only a few guards seem willing to even suffer his mood swings. He is left alone for the most part. It is clear the visit from the party brightens his mood, but the deep tired is clear in his face. He takes food and drink, but clearly just enough to stay alive. His body is but a slight shadow of its former vigor.

This goes on for a while. "The last of 'em was a janni... he's not dead, almost killed Maddie, uh, Mahdi, too. So, if you're looking for something/someone who may have gotten ahead of us, that kind of creature is likely the root of our evil rumors, don't you think?"

There is also wisdom in the fact that the others have kept specifics to themselves. I may be able to help you get into contact with individuals who can help you with the item. Going to assume here that the group agrees to meet with Almah. The bit of loose ends remaining can be taken care of retroactively.

As the group approaches Almah's manor the posted guards salute. A runner leaves them moments after they do. When the guards step aside, in unison to let the party proceed - no questions asked - a horn sounds from high within Almah's residence. Several folk are gathered to welcome you. Though they appear to be merchants, it is clear that the group represents the fledgling guilds of the now bustling settlement. Each graciously thanks the group, some more genuine than others. Though there are some familiar faces, none linger. It is clear that Almah is expecting the group and wishes none others to join for the gathering. The smell of well prepared foods wafts through the residence. A single servant, well appointed and full of joy approaches the group.

"Welcome heroes. The dining hall has been prepared, please follow me."

Though the dining hall could hold more, it has been prepared with just two tables. Enough room for everyone to sit comfortably. An area near the table has been prepared, it appears with Yeen and Gretiem in mind. If the companions are not present, the servant inquires if the four legged heroes will be joining the festivities.

Almah:
Almah enters, dressed in an elegant gown. She smiles broadly at seeing the gathered group. "I am so happy to see all of you have returned unharmed from your ordeal. Word of your success has proceeded you as has the sight of fleeing gnolls. Though some still harass the roads, tonight we celebrate victory." With a flourish of her hand young children begin to bring in food, on small dishes. Though the servant helps them with the larger fare, much of the preparations are made by using small dishes with similar fare on each. Quick happy feet fill the table in no time at all. A few faces you recognize, weren't these some of the orphans that you'd seen milling about the market just days before?

Aldebert would not have brought Gretiem. He does ride him in town on occasion, but not always and not tonight. He wears his chain armor (the new stuff, a little cleaner and less bulky than the banded mail) and he's carrying his main weapons. His backpack and other minor gear would be at home…

Aldebert thanks the hostess graciously, ”We but did your command as always.” but his ego glows through as he accepts praise with his companions.

He eats heartily, savoring each dish as it comes and occasionally smiling at the servants bringing it. He’s in a good mood, and he does his best to enjoy the feast.

Of course Yeen is coming. How can Ami eat if he doesn't have Yeen licked fingers? After all, Ami is not a savage and likes cleaned hands.

Ami does allow Yeen to be seated nearby, but he makes regular trips to visit the cat as the dinner continues. He is more than happy to recount his cat's notable deeds during the raid on the Carrion King. Ami also touts his brother's leadership, Mahdi's magic, Otah's axe, and Pent's 'emissions', holy or otherwise.

Otah lays his horsechopper on the floor behind him, out of the way. Like the halfling, his outdoor gear is at home, but he still finds that he is most presentable in his armor (newly cleaned and polished) than his normal clothing.

"Thanks for the meal." he offers to the host.

Pent throws his hands up in defensive, hand-chopping motions when the first of the guards start to salute them as they enter. When the gnome figures out the more martial mannerisms of respect, he salutes back, walking up to each and every guard, and returning the gesture vigorously.

When he's greeted by the merchants, he's warmed up, and begins to shake each and every hand, making sure catch every name, and every function, in case he needs a face to match a case when Almah discusses all things administrative.

As the sumptious selections are laid out before them all, he's in fine form. He shakes the chicken's wing, leaning in to hear its gratitude on being included in such a spread. He shakes the mutton leg, beaming grandly for its unspoken compliment, and promising it more one-on-one time later. He picks up a goblet, and toasts the toast. Sipping strongly, he swishes the wine before swallowing it deliberately. He eggs on the eggs, assuring them that there's plenty of room on the plate.

"Ah, to victory, is it? Little ones, pyrrhic ones, decisive ones... which one is it to be, then? I'll celebrate any of them, of course, but I hope we're not to be fed only when we secure one." Pent seems at ease talking with his mouth full.

As one of the children departs, the gnome leans back in his chair, waiting til the last possible moment, and mumbles a message to the little human, praising her for the good work done.

Almah smiles to see everyone at ease. Though she dotes on the children, there is clearly something on her mind. The meal proceeds pleasantly with easy conversation. Shortly after the small cakes are brought for dessert the doors of the hall are secured. Drinks, as they are needed are poured by Almah. She has a few excited bites of her cake before retrieving a wooden lock box from beneath the table near her.

"A celebration calls for more than just good food and good company. In recognition of what your work has made possible here, I wish to share with each of you the first bounty of newly restored trade routes."

With a twist of a small key, Almah opens the lockbox and retrieves a small cloth pouch for each of you. She circles the table presenting each of you with your reward.

"This is just the beginning of the good that can done here. It is my hope that in continued trust that we may move forward together. I have learned of what it is you found. If there is any way I can help, please trust me. Know also that I will not pry into your affairs."

With that Almah sits, smiles at each of you in between small bites of cake.

Pouch:
Each small pouch contains precious gems. Once appraised it is clear that the gems in each pouch are worth 2,500 gold.

Aldebert squirms in his seat a little and says nothing immediately, though he looks to his brother. Eventually, he speaks, "Thank you for this - this is most generous indeed." He gestures to the pouches.

He nervously casts about for what to say next, "And we do trust you, really we do. But we don't know what we have found exactly, and so we're uneasy. When we know more, we'll be more forthcoming, I promise."

In the end, he just tries to change the subject, "But you said in your summons that you had need of something in town? Do you need us to fetch something for you? How may we serve you best?"

"Aldi, I swear somedays... Are you gonna not try and hold back the feeling that you don't not want to say something, but you can't because you don't know if you want to say something that can't be unsaid for saying it? Do you know how silly that sounds?"

Pent sits up straighter in his chair, since it makes it easier to reach the middle plates on the table. "Almah, they've been obsessing over a scroll we found for some time, and they're no closer to understanding now than they did when the first found it. Sure, they'll likely claim it's not true, but I mean, come on and shear the sheep already and see to the pink underneath. The scroll is important, so much so for where we found it. The other half clings to it like his mum's tit. You say you know what it is, so tell us how you know about the scroll you're not supposed to know about, then tell us how we're gonna learn more about the scroll, so we can get to knowing." The gnome shakes his head at Aldebert, then turns back to Almah, to listen to further information.

Almah nods calmly.

"I doubt I will be able to decipher any more than all of you have, but if you are willing to share what you know or at the least describe the nature of the scroll I am sure I can direct you to those who may be able to help - if you choose to seek help. I give you my word, no one beyond this room will hear what you share from me."

Ami stares daggers at the gnome, the betrayer, the wrong one.

"If that is true, then cast everyone else out and come closer, we will *not* speak of this aloud. It is not the gnome's to share, it belongs to Sarenrae and her servant Vardishal," Ami hisses angrily, thinking to stop all serving staff from overhearing.

Almah nods again calmly.

"Then perhaps it is best if we leave the matter where it is. Let us finish our meal in pleasant company, together. If I may be of any service as you safeguard your charge do let me know. As for further business, I simply wish to encourage your interest in securing the roads. If there is any way that I may be of assistance in matters of security please do let me know."

Almah slowly finishes her cake. There is no sign of further drink or food being brought. Dishes remain where they are. The secured doors remain undisturbed.

Ami shoots a few more looks at Pent and commands Yeen to scent the room to ease his mind.

It's not until Yeen and Ami are certain that no one is within does he pull the scroll out of its secret spot to show to Almah.

"Yes, Almah, here you go. This is not to be shared outside this room, you see," Ami shoots a glare a Pent, hoping Almah understands where a gnome might not.

"This is sacred to Sarenrae. She wanted us to have it and cautioned against making it well known," Ami says and shoots a glare a Pent, hoping Almah understands where a gnome might not.

"We already know that there are some evil doers that want it. So it is important to keep secret," Ami says and shoots a glare a Pent, hoping Almah understands where a gnome might not.

Ami lays the scroll out for Almah. He completely unintentionally puts himself in between it and Pent's view.

Pent finds himself arranging his cheese and meat plate in a checkerboard pattern, bringing out crackers in both light and dark grains, fashioning a game while Almah and Ami finally get to it.

He makes several bad moves on the black advance, snuffling the losing chips with either the meat or the cheese that was unfortunate to bear the final landing space. The game advances, but not without a couple of long drags of wine to liberate cracker crumbs in his throat, unhappy with their failure on the board.

He hears brother half talk to other half, reassuring the slow one of Almah's trust. Sarah, You are a kind one. It's good to encourage him to feel proud about something.

Pent looks on with satisfaction as the black makes a sudden run of the board, completely overturning white, and leaving both black and gnome satisfied with the clearing of the board. Black's celebration is short-lived, as Pent pours another cupful of sourgrape.

"So, Almah, who do we talk to? You must have someone you trust, eh? Are they local folk, I hope?"

Almah does not touch the scroll, but simply looks at it. She nods slowly.

"There is no one here that could learn anymore than I am sure all of you already have. Or at least no one I would trust. You are wise to be cautious. Shifting her gaze from Ami to everyone. What have you learned so far? What are your plans?"

Otah watches the exchange, noting the numerous glares Amiamble gives to the gnome.

When the huddled and hush-hush exchange is over, Otah brings the conversation back to normal volume.

"Almah, you spoke of securing the roads. In order to do that, we need bodies. Trustworthy and able-bodied. We have intentions on putting the word out, but surely your voice will carry more weight?"

While he's speaking, he takes one of Pent's checkerboard meats. While waiting for Almah to respond he pops it into his mouth with a smirk.

Sighing.

"I have tried. The merchants worry still about local guards straying to far away. If I press more to the roads, I upset them and risk trade. If you all are willing to travel I could send a request to a friend in Katapesh. I am sure even your presence on the road would improve travel for the caravans, at least for a time. I can send a small contingent with you."

Ami looks at Mahdi, wanting the man to explain what he is too shy to. Yeen returns from his scenting, looking for Ami's hand for some pets. Ami scritches Yeen's neck and waits for Mahdi to explain.

Ami looks up as Ooootah suggests that there might be more gnolls to kill. He nods helpfully at that.

Pent suddenly sees a dwarven pair of finger tweezers enter his peripheral vision, absconding with a part of his board. He follows the tweezers all the way to the gates of teeth awaiting the meat, and almost reaches for it. Too late. The gnome's face scrunches into a grump, while he reaches for replacement ham out of the corner of his eye, while watching Otah for any sudden movements. His hand alights on the stack of thin-cut, where it selects a single slice, and returns it to the gap on the board.

The gnome unconsciously mimics the half's silly gesture, putting himself in between his checkerboard and Otah's view.

My sincere apologies; apparently I X-d out new notifs on this and I was wondering why the hell everyone had gone quiet just because I was in Hawaii. I'll get a retcon'd post in for the matter of the emir and the scene with Zanphir tomorrow, but I just want to address the current scene quick before I crash.

Ami's dagger-glaring at Pent is matched by Mahdi's own burning gaze. The fire mage grits his teeth, gripping the tablecloth a little with smoldering fingers until Almah's words cut the air again and he exhales, getting control of his temper, more or less.

(Mahdi, for the record, purchased some extravagant new clothing to wear to dinner, the cost of which will be deducted from his sheet when I get around to it.)

He takes a deep breath at Almah's enquiry of where to go next, and offers her a stiff bow as well, tucking his pouch of gems away into a fold in his robes.

"My lady is most generous," he says of the gems that he's already mentally spending. "I present our regrets for not speaking of it formerly, but you must understand: the one creature that we fought... which I personally believe may have worn several faces, and interacted with us as different guises... seems to be as slippery as ice, and as hard to corral as the desert wind. Furthermore, such creatures are capable of making themselves invisible, and slipping between planes, so you realize the difficulty we have in taking promises that 'no one else shall hear' at face value. I trust your intentions perfectly, my lady; but I hope you will not be offended if I say I am warier of the ability to execute that promise of total silence. Not for your own lips, but because of the janni's aforementioned abilities for subterfuge. If he could change his face to be a gnoll, I must assume he can change his face to be a servant, or-- again, no offense, my lady-- even to take your likeness."

While Mahdi's words are directed at Almah, he is glaring at Pent the entire time he speaks. After a moment, he continues.

"We are more than happy to carry out any sortie you would wish. As for long-term plans: I was hoping to perhaps obtain, by scholar's request, some scrolls and books from Katapeh's libraries that might prove fruitful in our little riddle. I have begun some researches already, with what resources are here in our little town. We have some insights of our own as well," a little incline of his head at Ami, "that may also prove fruitful."

Pent listens to Mahdi, and slowly comes to understand that as he moves to pour more wine, Mahdi's eyes follow him. When he sits back in his chair, Mahdi's eyes follow him. The gnome ducks his head under the table, then slowly lifts it, only to find Mahdi staring at him still.

Pent raises an eyebrow, newly aware of Mahdi's apparent displeasure with something or other. He checks his beard for crumbs. Finding some, he removes them, mostly, then looks back at Mahdi for a change of face. When no change registers, Pent puts down his goblet, gesturing to it no longer being in his hand. Looking back to Mahdi, he sees no change of face. Intrigued, Pent looks around the room, and alights upon the half huddled over something or... other...

The gnome sits bolt upright in his chair, nodding vigorously at Mahdi, now understanding the mage's frustration. "Ami, for the continued love of Sarah, why would you go and produce the Scroll?! Almah already told you she'd be of no help in looking it over, only wanted to know what you all knew about it so she could advise. Now, she knows you're the one carting it about. No wonder Maddie's looking pissed. Why on Kelmarane's grand plain would you pull it out of hiding to show our boss, when you could have used your words to provide her just as much understanding?!"

Pent shakes his head in disappointment. "Almah, I'm sorry. I don't mean to offend you. Perhaps you did want to look upon it with your own eyes. I didn't hear you ask. Since we've got a janni on our tail, I thought it best that you understood what we bear from the House of the Beast, and what will pursue us, likely looking for said Scroll. We bring danger into Kelmarane for having absconded with the Scroll. It was reckless to try and keep you in the dark, and for that, I apologize for my crew's paranoia. It's only a matter of time before the janni tries to steal the Scroll, so the sooner we know what to do with it, the better."

Aldebert's head spins a little with the discussion and he remains silent watching it all play out. He considers checking Almah for evil, but in the end decides it would simply be extraordinarily rude and he keeps his powers to himself. He's happy that Pent finally gets the secrecy of the scroll.

He even considers stealing food off Pent's plate from the other side, but can't quite bring himself to do it...

"I think it makes sense for us to go to Katapesh for a short while. We can do what we can to cleanse the road on the way, we have some purchases to make there, and we can hire, or entice, more able bodied warriors while in town."

"We might even be able to do more research on our find there, if we get a little lucky. Do you know anyone there we can trust Almah? A wizard or other scholar who might shed some light on our plight?"

Retrieving a bit of parchment from her wooden chest, Almah appears to be penning an addition to a letter she had already prepared.

"I suggest that you keep the item hidden. There are few in town beyond yourselves that could hamper such a creature from moving about as it wishes. Even the precautions I took will do little more than alert us to its arrival, if it is indeed pursuing the item as you have suggested. It seems best that you depart as soon as possible. I am adding an additional request to the one I had planned to send via my own messenger. If it is permitted, I would like to send Garavel and some guards with you. They will of course know nothing of the true nature of your travel."

Amah quickly finishes here letter, puts it together with the previous letter, and seals both.

Thanks for the update Mahdi. Will give you a chance to get back to the other areas of interest before we move on. Meanwhile, are there other around town matters that others would have taken care of before departing?
