"How truly awful," Serge remarks, kneeling to examine Kalkamedes. "Had it not been for someone stopping him, this poor man would have fallen to his death months ago. He should be grateful to have such assistance from the Pathfinder Society."

Serge stands up, walks over to Luurg and places his hand on his shoulder. Honesty in his voice, he looks at the half-orc with concern. "Luurg, I recall what you knew about wolfsbane, and how you were able to utilize the herb. Surely there must be a similar sleepsbane, correct? Where might we find such a thing?"

Throughout the ride to the cabin, Marcel remained quiet, learning as much as he could about his teammates through their polite conversations. He kept silent when the group reached the cottage and were briefed on their mission by Venture-Captain Heidmarch. Seeing the man called Kalkamedes tied up in such fashion brought a momentary pang of sorrow to his heart. This man was a much a slave to whatever it was that was compelling him to the night walks that the captain spoke of.

Deep in thought, Marcel absently watched Luurg, Meredith, and Serge attend Kalkamedes as he lay incarcerated to his bed before turning to speak to Captain Heidmarch.

"It's sad to see Kalkamedes suffering like this. I hope we are able to help him. I do have a couple of questions before you free him to start walking. Has anyone already tried to figure out where he was going? Second, is there anything you can give us, advice included, that would help us better protect him when you cut him loose?"

Season of Ghosts

Venture-Captain Heidmarch gives Luurg a withering look as he implies that Kalkamedes' bindings might be tied to 'other' nocturnal activities. As she does, the light of recognition dawns in her eyes. "Ah yes, I remember you now. Names carry weight but with so many agents it's not always easy to remember the faces that accompany them," she comments, quickly tucking her hands behind her back lest she be subjected to another of Luurg's sticky handshakes.

As several of you offer your own insights as well as questions, she nods with approval. "It is always best to ensure that you have as much information as possible before setting out on a task. To answer your question," she nods at Yarricki, "we are uncertain. You might wonder why not simply leave Kalkamedes safely restrained and begin searching to the north of here? It's a good thought and was one of the first things we tried, but little came of it. We suspect that although his general path from here leads to the north, he may not take the exact same path due to having to maneuver around obstacles such as boulders and trees."

"...zzkghh...watch out...tree..." Kalkamedes snorts and mumbles, as if on cue. And though his words might seem comical, Yarricki does know that nearby Fenwall Mountains are rugged, covered with thick forests, and monster-infested but also mineral-rich. Thus the hillsides are dotted with small mines and other prospecting operations run by both loners trying to strike it rich and by major trading houses.

Shaking her head, Heidmarch then turns to Malusha and Marcel. "We sent out scouts to try and discover where Kalkamedes may be attempting to go but weren't able to discover anything useful; no landmarks or ruins that we could find. Our mages and priests also examined him thoroughly and could find no traces of magic on his person, which is extremely puzzling," she admits. "This sort of behavior is practically a textbook example of a compulsion effect but it isn't like anything that we have seen before. All I can tell you is that he isn't suffering under a curse or any enchantments."

The Venture-Captain idly runs her finger lightly along the blade of her knife and then looks around at the simple, but cozy dwelling. "You might try having a look around inside here before I set him free," she suggests. "Perhaps there might be a clue among his belongings that we missed? I highly doubt that our good friend here will hold a grudge against any of us for rifling through his things - in fact, he would likely do the same were his situation reversed with one of you."

A second post to follow this one very shortly, please sit tight and hold off on posting until I can throw it up as well!

Season of Ghosts

While some of you speak with Venture-Captain Heidmarch and make further inquiries, the rest of you turn your attention to Kalkamedes himself. Luurg examines Kalkamedes and quickly confirms that he seems to bear no serious physical injuries although his arms and legs are dotted with small bruises and cuts as though he might've recently forced his way through thick brush or undergrowth. He also doesn't recognize any signs of the man having been poisoned or having contracted a disease, so those possible causes for his condition can also be ruled out.

As you consider your charge and how to best proceed with your task, each of you turn your thoughts to Kalkamedes, the man. What do you really know about him? Some of you realize that you might've actually heard of him before. Perhaps his personal life and his past might hold a clue as to his current predicament?
_______

Kn. Local (DC 15+):

You actually recall that Kalkamedes is a veteran Pathfinder, though his fame does not extend beyond southern Varisia. Although he is now semi-retired and only forwards the occasional report to the Decemvirate these days, his colleagues continue to respect him for his many prior accomplishments.

Kn. Local (DC 20+):

Late in his career, Kalkamedes developed an interest in the lore of the ancient runelords and the rare heroes who dared to oppose their tyranny. It was then that he relocated from Absalom to this remote corner of Varisia in order to further his studies.

Kn. Local (DC 25+):

Early in his adventuring career, Kalkamedes swore the oaths to become a paladin and served as a staunch defender of the meek for many years. However, one day he abruptly left his holy order with little to no explanation as to why.

Kn. Local (DC 30+):

Kalkamedes was sometimes seen carrying a broken sword. Rumor has it that the sword is actually a sentient blade and that it and the former paladin are inseparable.

Marcel thinks hard, but in his time as a Pathfinder agent, has never heard of anyone he's worked or traveled with mention Kalkamedes's name, let alone any deeds he's done on behalf of the society.

"I'm sorry," he says to the others. "Nothing about Kalkamedes rings a bell to me. One of you may know more about him than I do, which is nothing. I'm going to look around the cabin and see if I can find anything that will assist us in helping him."

Marcel does just that and begins to search the cabin to find anything important that will help, albeit slowly as he tends to make sure anything he picks up, looks in, or goes through is replaced exactly how it was found if not considered important.

Meredith and Denair head to town to quickly buy some scrolls while everyone else searches the cabin for clues.

Season of Ghosts

Heidmarch smiles awkwardly as Luurg wraps her up in a quick hug, trying not to cringe away. "Oof! Um...what was I saying? Oh yes! While I'm positive that Kalkamedes will not be upset with you for searching his home, I will take responsibility should I find myself mistaken," she replies to Serge as she brushes at her clothing, offering silent thanks that none of the half-orc's strange concoctions seem to have leaked onto her.

In the meantime, Marcel and some of the rest of you begin a careful search of the small cabin, being mindful to avoid breaking or damaging anything in the process. Within a small wooden wardrobe Luurg discovers two or three sets of clothing (and holey underwear), one of which consists of a pair of leather breeches, a belt, a shirt with an overlying vest, gloves, and a simple cloak. He also notes a worn but sturdy pair of boots that sit near the foot of the bed.

Marcel decides to poke around inside the small end table at the head of the bed and finds several unfinished charts that appear to be maps of the nearby Fenwall Mountains.

At the other end of the cabin, Yarricki, Malusha, and Serge begin a sweep of the small kitchen/dining/living area. On what could almost be called a lark, Yarricki gives in to her gnomish curiosity and peers inside the stove, perhaps wondering if the man's strange affliction might be a result of something he recently ate or cooked. Within the stove, she finds a crumpled and burned piece of paper that turns out to be a charcoal sketch. The sketch depicts a squat fortress sitting under the light of a full moon, enshrouded by clouds.

Please see Slide #4 under the Night March (Table A) link in my profile header! You may also find a link to the various slides used in this game at the top of the campaign page.

As Yarricki makes a surprising find within the small stove, Malusha and Serge notice a small switch on the back side of the stove! Flipping it reveals a hidden compartment, the opening cleverly concealed underneath a nearby water barrel. Inside the compartment the pair see a heavy metal chest that appears to be locked.

Marcel looked over the first map, noting the details of any particular mountain ranges, forested areas, bodies of water, and any points of interest. He shuffled through the maps, repeating the process with each one.

"Looks like Kalkamedes was exploring and mapping out the nearby Fenwall Mountains," he remarked to the group as he walked toward the kitchen where most of them seemed to be gathered. "All of these maps seem to be incomplete and..."

He took a step back to avoid bumping into Malusha as she retreated away from Denair. All he could see was the corner of a metal chest over the eidolon's shoulder. "Looks like I'm not the only one who found something," he said.

It takes Denair a bit of effort but on her second attempt the lock on the chest makes a satisfying *click* as it gives way. After a little additional scrutiny to make sure there are no nasty surprises in store, the little eidolon flips the lid of the chest open and you're all greeted by an odd little musical fanfare - perhaps Kalkamedes knows a wizard with peculiar sense of humor? Inside you see several items of interest: a set of bracers, a mud-spattered cloak, a dried gourd containing a milky blue liquid, a small vial of clear liquid, an odd, jigsaw-shaped flask with sharp edges that contains a pale pink liquid, and a longsword that bears a large crack running from tip to hilt.

Working together, the more magically-inclined among you take some time to study the items and discover that they all bear enchantments of some sort. While you're able to easily identify a potion of Cure Light Wounds inside the dried gourd, an Elixir of Swimming inside the vial, and a potion of Hide from Undead inside the jigsaw flask, you realize that the bracers, cloak, and sword will require a bit more study.

Spellcraft - Cloak (DC 20):

It's mud-spattered but it's clearly a Cloak of Resistance +1.

"Well! It looks as if you've found several things that might be of use," Venture-Captain Heidmarch comments as she observes your activities. "Good eye on spotting that lever by the way; I don't know that I would've thought to check behind the stove for such a thing."
_______

To save a little time, I assumed that the folks with Spellcraft would want to Take 10 to identify the items. Between the group of you - especially Malusha who has the highest rank - your scores were enough to identify the liquids without needing to roll.

Does anyone else want the bracers? You get first dibs, otherwise I'll hand it to my eidolon.

Dang nice rolls Yarricki!

Luurg watches along as he slobbers down yet another juicy pear, tossing the core into a dusty garbage can in the corner of the kitchen. "Neat stuff, nuttin I'd use, I'm sure Kay not mind if we borrow."

Luurg nods at Marcel, offering him a pear as well "Well, guess we just gotta go find out ourselfs! Not much better den esplorin 'round da woods!"

Luurg continues to mow down fruit while the others finish off any questions or preparations.

Malusha looks impressed at Yarricki. "Thank you for identifying all of these things." He picks up the bracers and turns them over in his hands a couple times then hands them to Meredith. "I don't need these. So it's fine with me for Denair to use them."

"Yarricki, can you tell me more about the sword? What do you mean that it will help allies?"

Malusha looks amazed at Luurg as he finishes another piece of fruit. "Luurg, how much of that do you each everyday? And where do you keep it all."

After Yarricki explains how the sword works Luurg smiles "Dats pretty neat fer sumbudy that doesn't swing dare sword much at people. If sumone uses it feel free to make leafy here, or fruit slicer magical!" He points to his sapling spear and his sticky dagger he's always using on his fruit.

In regards to Malusha's question Luurg gets a very confused look "Where do I keep it? In mah belly like most people? Dat not how people eat over in da desert?" He rubs his large, extended belly, which has had a breast plate thoughtfully crafted to contain it.

"Great job, Yarricki. You certainly seem to know your magical gear," Marcel replies, very impressed with the gnome's knowledge of such things.

"As far as using these items, I purchased a cloak before our summons that protects me in the same way. I also bought my mithral shirt at that time as well, so I wouldn't be able to get any use from the bracers. The sword?" Marcel thinks for a moment and then shakes his head. "I could use it, but I learned how to fight hand-to-hand with axes and knives, not longer style blades and I'm a better archer than a bladesman. I wouldn't object if Denair wants to use those items until we can put an end to Kalkamedes' sleepwalking problem. Or maybe let Serge use the sword," he added, noting the holy crusader's longsword sheathed in its scabbard.

Marcel turns to Luurg. "Just curious. Have you got any apples stashed away in there?"

"Oh? A sword whose very magic aids not only the wielder, but his allies too?" Serge gazes upon the longsword with intrigue, running his finger along the blade. "I could certainly make use of such a weapon if you do not think it would suit you better, Marcel," he smiles. "Normally, I brandish this goliath of a sword," he throws a thumb behind his head, pointing at his two-handed greatsword, "But simpler, more elegant weapons have their place and purpose, especially when they can aid others in more ways than one."

Now pretty sure that you've found everything of us that there is to find within the cabin you busy yourselves divvying up the gear you've found, hopeful that these items will help you keep Kalkamedes (and possibly yourselves) safe in the hours to come.

"It seems as if you're almost ready to go," Heidmarch comments, idly twirling her knife in her hand. "Just give me the word and I'll cut him free, but be sure to make whatever plans and precautions you want before I do so."
_______

Okay, so Serge has the longsword (which I need to point out has the Broken condition though you'll still be able to use it if you like), Denair has the bracers, and I suppose Yarricki is carrying the cloak and the three potions/elixirs? Also, are you making any specific preparations or will you just let him motor once Heidmarch cuts the ropes?

"Before we let him up, why don't we put this cloak on him? Maybe it will help him avoid a fall or trap. On the otherhand, it might make him more resistant to our spells if we need to cast something on him." Malusha places a finger on his lips in thought. "But, on the third hand, it would also allow us to detect magic to find him if we lose him in the dark."

He looks at the others for responses to his suggestions.

Luurg nods along "Ya we shud get him dressed fer da wedder, I guess maybe put deez boots on him." Luurg slides the hiking boots off and works to put them on the man's feet "Stop kickin me already eesh mang!"

Once he's all dressed Luurg unshoulders his own pack and gently sets it down, digging in he pulls out a long length of silk rope and smiles "Gonna leash him like a pony, den we can keep him from wand'rin off. If we needs a break we can just tie him off to a tree er sumting." He ties up a harness like thing on him, sort of like a toddler leash.

"Keep dem maps wid us, maybe we can fill in dem blank spots fer him while we go!" Luurg rubs his hands excitedly.

"I'm ready for him to be cut loose and see where he goes," Marcel replies. "I'll keep the maps with me and if you need me to, I can try to scout ahead of the main group for any monsters or obstacles." Marcel looks to see if there's a map that show's Kalkamedes' cabin on it for a reference point.

Serge thinks back to just a few days ago and how he attempted to chase a werewolf down in futility. He eyes Luurg's lightweight armor in envy. "If we are going to have to run after him, perhaps I might remove this overencumbering armor first... Yet, then I would find myself unable to properly defend you all. What a dilemma." He sighs, beginning to unstrap his breastplate, then changing his mind and fastening it even tighter than it previously was. "I really must acquire this mithral material."

As he looks again at Kalkamedes' maps Marcel finds that a couple of them do reference the cabin, so at the very least it shouldn't be very difficult for you all to find your way back if you need to.

After quickly forming a plan you all set about dressing Kalkamedes in his travel clothing, boots, and his magical cloak - a task made much more difficult than it ought to be due to Kalkamedes' thrashing and having to work around the ropes that keep him bound to his bed. Several minutes and a few bruises and rope burns later, you've got your traveling companion dressed and as ready as he'll ever be. Just before you give the signal to Heidmarch, Luurg quickly ties a length of silk rope around Kalkamedes' waist to act as a leash of sorts. Then, Marcel gives the signal and Sheila Heidmarch bends down and cuts through the ropes with a flourish. Kalkamedes rises from his bed, arms held awkwardly in front of him, and totters out the door and through his small living area and out the front door. Under the light of a full moon and the gaze of twinkling stars, Kalkamedes the Dreaming turns his vacant, unseeing gaze to the north and begins his night march for what will hopefully be the last time.

Venture-Captain Heidmarch pokes her head outside the cabin door as you all set out, calling, "Good luck and stay safe! I will see you all again very soon - I am certain of it!"
_______

And you're off! It is currently just after dark on a pleasant summer evening and the lighting is Dim Light unless you have darkvision or want to utilize light sources. As I understand it, Marcel is going to range a little bit ahead of the group (as best as he can) and Yarricki is going to ride Thunder and fly overhead? About how high do you want to go and where do you want to be in relation to your companions on the ground?

I'm going to range ahead, but with it being nighttime and being human, I'll activate my one sunrod. I don't want to be so far ahead that I can't see Kalkamedes or the group when I look back in case something happens to the main group or if he goes in a different direction. I'll look for him primarily, with light sources from the group secondary.

As they head off Luurg smiles and keeps a good hold on Kalkamedes's leash "Dis gunna be da weirdest mission yet... maybe we we done you get nuff coin to get that armor made wid mithril Serge. But you better have lots saved up already, NOT CHEAP!"

If Marcel is going to scout ahead stealthily, and Serge is at a 20' movement via his armor, we should try slowing things down to 15' movement? What sort of speed is this zombie man trying to motor along at? Luurg would be good to be in front of him vs behind if possible, especially with darkvision.
