I see what you did there
Flynn is referring, of course, to the "I'm against BETS, but I'll WAGER" comment
but it sounds like there's some logic to it as well
GM Ladile |
At Xavilon's remark Jamila bursts into laughter and Falbin groans, shaking his head. "Really? That's against the spirit of the bet! You can't just straddle the fence like that," he remarks as he shakes hands with Pai and Eutrophia to seal the deal on their bets.
"Oh I don't know Falbin, it seems like it makes perfectly good sense to me," Jamila replies, still chuckling. "Most people hedge their bets anyway so why would something like this be any different?"
"Yeah yeah yeah...we'll just see which one of us is right," the gnome says, waving his hand dismissively. "Be on the lookout as we get closer to the verdant zone - you might be able to find evidence for one theory or another or..." he groans, "both, before we even get to where we're going. Put those peepers to good use!"
And so with your bets placed you continue on through the forest towards your destination, everyone now watching their surroundings for clues...
As you gaze up at the sky, you notice cloud formations spiraling unnaturally to the south, a phenomenon which often occurs near planar disturbances.
While you pick your way along the path you notice some large, humanoid footprints in the mud. They're clear, if not particularly recent.

"Clues in the mud, but also in the sky." Auberon points to the south, where cloud formations spiral unnaturally. "That can occur near planar disturbances. The sky supports Jamila, but the footprints could be the druids transforming into giants to wreak havoc, as rumor suggests. Xavilon may have been on to something, that it is not just one or the other."
What is Jamila's ancestry? Does she seem like she is plane-touched? Maybe I missed that detail.

Apologies for the delay, today was another work day!
When Xavilon points out the large, muddy footprints, Falbin smiles smugly. "Hah! There's little else here in these woods that'd leave tracks like that except for the druids," he declares. "They do so love their little shapeshifting tricks!"
Jamila frowns as she bends down to peer at one of the footprints. "I have to admit, I'm not familiar with anything else that'd leave tracks like these. Shapeshifting...could certainly be behind them," she admits, albeit reluctantly.
"I thought so - that's a point in my favor," the gnome chuckles. But when Auberon points out the unusual cloud formations only a short while later, Falbin grows unusually quiet.
"Ah yes...I know that druids can influence the weather if they wish, but to form these particular sorts of cloud formations? No, it's as Auberon notes - these sorts of things have been documented to occur near planar disturbances," Jamila remarks with a confident smile. "And judging by your sudden silence, you agree. And so this point belongs to me."
As Jamila speaks, her eyes catch the sunlight filtering in through the forest canopy above and blaze brightly - more brightly than any human that any of you have known.
You're not sure why you didn't pick up on it earlier but you realize that Jamila is actually a janni - a type of genie.

As you move further and further from Bellis, you begin to notice that the landscape and temperatures are changing. Chilly fall winds shift into balmy zephyrs and largely bare trees start to yield to jungle-like growth.
"Wow! Are you all seeing this?" Falbin gapes. "Look there, see those hostas? No business growing in the type of climate we'd normally have here. And we're not even to the real heart of the verdant zone yet! Heck, we're not even as far out from Bellis as I thought we'd be before things started to change - we've only come maybe two miles so far."
With a bit of study, you estimate that the verdant zone's rate of expansion is roughly a couple hundred feet per day.
You notice that the rampant vines underfoot closely resemble an augmented version of an Entangle spell - a favorite bit of magic among druids.

"Ah? Yes, I am," Jamila smiles. "Good eye! Most people aren't familiar with my kind without having done some study or having met one of us before. We're usually confused for those with the blood of the elements coursing through their veins, or sometimes those with ancestry tied to the heavenly realms."
Then, contrary to her usual casual, confident demeanor, Jamila shuffles her feet rather shyly. "I'm not sure if I'd go so far as to call myself any sort of hero though. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if there's some truth to those stories of your ancestors. It might be something worth looking into," she remarks thoughtfully.

As soon as Flynn points out his own observations to the group, Falbin and Jamila both begin talking excitedly.
"See? That right there, that rate of growth - it's consistent with recorded examples of blooms that surround rifts into the First World," she exclaims. "Another point for my theory!"
"No way!" Falbin replies, shaking his head emphatically. "Everyone knows how much druids love their entanglement spells! I bet their shenanigans out here in the forest are letting them augment their usual magics - if they can manipulate the weather and plant growth then why not this? I'd say that's a point in my favor, haha!"
And as Flynn had quietly observed to himself, this makes two points in favor of each theory - still a tie, leaving the group nowhere closer to any sort of definitive answer. You press onward through the increasingly large and vibrant undergrowth as your two guides continue to bicker back and forth good-naturedly.

After continuing deeper into the forest and finally entering into the verdant zone proper - which by now very much looks like some manner of fantastical jungle with impossibly large plant growth all around - you eventually make your way to a clearing. Great shaggy mushrooms sprout up to 5 feet in height and the soil here is a dark gray, standing in stark contrast to the normal brown soil you've observed up until now. A few pools of water dot the landscape and their depth is impossible to gauge from a distance.
But what's more immediately pressing is the presence of two enormous frogs, squatting amongst the mushrooms. Their tongues are corkscrew-shaped and brightly colored and their skin shifts from rich, brown hues to vibrant blues and greens to dusky red and all colors in-between. One frog appears slightly larger than the other and as they spot the group, they begin a series of strange croaks and ribbits.

Auberon, while perhaps a little slower to act than some of his companions, uses the delay to his advantage to enter into his own personal 'zone' before racing around to slash viciously at Big Daddy with his sansetsukon.
