GM Kamro |
Sweet. Any other prep before you open the door? Remember, you can also request spells from Laori and Sial. Laori in particular is drained at the moment, and so would be a better source of buffs than a combatant. Link to sheets.
Shaeda Stormborn |
We'll take a flame strike from Laori as soon as the door opens on as many as she can get.
And we'll take a Summon Monster VI from Sial to bring in 1d4+1 Lantern Archons to start gunning the things with their light rays!
Tronar HanFrum |
Tronar casts Shield upon himself.
"We also have a wand of mage armor. The force of magic will impede the specters touch." Tronar will use the fully charged wand on anyone who wants it and Tronar casts haste from the wand on the primary party members just as the door opens.
Searok Ironbeard |
We also have a wand of mage armor. The force of magic will impede the specters touch
Eh? Will it work on me? I want to be able to stand there an' punch 'em in the nose!
Searok Ironbeard |
Unless someone is planning on doing something that requires them to open the door, Searok will go ahead and open the door. After he gets his mage armor, of course!
Ziranu Barova |
Ziranu will defer on the Mage Armor, with thanks, to save it for those in greater need, and rely instead upon his supernatural dexterity and Ghost Touch armor (which I think Shaeda has as well).
GM Kamro |
A worn but colorful carpet covers most of the floor of this room, and a number of wooden tables and comfortable chairs are spaced about the chamber for informal gatherings and meals. A small kitchen has been set up by a low stone fireplace alongside a cupboard holding some dishes and utensils as well as a few desiccated remains of foodstuffs.
The spectres are obvious, five of them floating arranged around the central table as if waiting for something.

Laori's Flame Strike will also go off. By placing it in the middle of the group, it can hit all of the monsters, though they will take half damage due to incorporeality.

Hush you for knowing my PC's gear better than I do!
Shaeda Stormborn |
To say that I'm disappointed in your rolling skills there GM would be an understatement. Under average on both the flame strike and the summoning, but your saves were exceptional!
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Our great GM is just doing us a favor by creating a more challenging atmosphere! :-D

Without hesitation, Ziranu unleashes his emerald barrage of undead bane upon the closest of these hungering spirits as soon as he can target the horror…

Hit, Miss, Hit, Hit, Hit!
Ziranu's barrage of attacks destroys one of the monsters and injures another.
Shrieking with rage, one of the remaining spectres seeks vengeance, diving through the north wall and emerging from the east one, behind Ziranu, reaching for him with its ghostly hands.
Touch Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (3) + 12 = 151d8 ⇒ 4 Plus 2 negative levels.
(Looks like it misses Ziranu's touch AC)
Laori will attack the creature with her Spiked Chain, also using her Destructive Smite ability on the first blow, and unleash a CMW from her Spell Storing chain if one of the strikes hits.
Spiked Chain: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 192d4 + 6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 + 5 = 16
Spiked Chain: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 112d4 + 6 ⇒ (3, 2) + 6 = 11
First blow lands.
Positive: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (7, 3) + 10 = 20
28 total damage; chain does half, but spell does full.
Anastasia's up
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Anastasia looks distressed and channels positive energy!

Anastasia's burst of energy tears through most of the remaining spectres.
One of them darts forward and reaches for Searok.
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 191d8 ⇒ 3 plus 2 negative levels.
Tronar's turn
Tronar HanFrum |
I believe Tronar's position allows him to see all 4 specters and all of them are within 30' of the middle one that just struck at Searok
Tronar takes advantage of the current tactical situation and calls forth lighting that seemingly strikes his intended target and then weaves through space to strike the other 3 companions.
chain lightening damage w arcane point to boost DC: 13d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 5, 5, 3, 6, 3, 6, 4, 4, 6, 3) = 53 Reflex for half; DC is 28 for the specter on Searok and DC is 26 for the rest of them
Shaeda Stormborn |
Whoever set this up, please keep me next to the party members in the future. I've been pretty consistent at always wanting to be next to Searok, and then next to other party members too, so I can BG them against such attacks. As it appears now, you all are on your own.
Shaeda will move 5' to the East, so she can at least BG 3 people. She considers casting detect undead, but she decides she knows where they are.
Shaeda will end her turn.
GM Kamro |
Oops, sorry, I'll swap you with Asyra, since she's up now anyway.
Asyra steps into the room and strikes at one of the remaining spectres with her chain.
Chain: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (2) + 18 = 202d4 + 11 ⇒ (2, 3) + 11 = 16
Chain: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 142d4 + 11 ⇒ (3, 4) + 11 = 18
She finishes it off. The remaining one retaliates.
Touch: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 211d8 ⇒ 4 plus two negative levels.
Searok's up
Shaeda Stormborn |

Ziranu Barova |
Ziranu nods silently in concurrence, ready to move out purposefully towards their objective, while not leaving avoidable tactical surprises in the company's wake.
All set, team? Tronar, Shaeda, and Anastasia still appear as Level 13. Ready when you are.
GM Kamro |
Going to reveal all the rooms along the right side, since they're all the same.
The doors along the hallway each open to reveal a simply furnished bedroom, decorated like a priest's cell. The beds each contain a long dead skeleton - it looks like when the castle fell to Mandraivus the occupants ritually killed themselves rather than risk capture - you suspect they may have become the spectres you just faced.
They seem to have destroyed anything of value before their suicides, since they would have little use for physical goods when incorporeal and didn't want any valuables falling into enemy hands. However, one of them missed something - you discover a block of incense under one of the beds that detects as magical.
Laori: "This was dumb. Mandraivus and Co never even came here, so these fools just hung around for hundreds of years until we dispatched them. Why not fight as themselves? At least if they died that way it would have been heroic."
Sial: "Perhaps this wasn't their call. They may have been following instructions from Zon-"
Laori: "DUMB! If that were true then either the Midnight Lord should have called their souls home as soon as the threat was over, or maybe given them some new instructions, like, I don't know, not attacking if two of his own servants swing by. They got screwed, that's all."
Sial: "My, we're testy today."
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Anastasia looks at Sial and Laori and shakes her head.
“It's truly tragic, but we must focus on our task at hand. We need to find that holy sword of Iomedae and put an end to this evil presence!“ she says.

Tronar HanFrum |
"I tend to agree with the priestess of Pharasma. we should make haste for the sword to weaken the rest of the enemies here and strengthen our own hand."
If no one objects to Tronar's assertion, then he will suggest we go back to the most direct route UP. :)
GM Kamro |
Argh, been busy all day and then crashed after work, sorry for the delay
The incense is a block of Incense of Meditation, a very powerful one-time item.
Sial: "If we're making haste, I have a suggestion. Remember, the tower we seek to enter is not part of the original castle, is impossibly old, and nearly indestructible. So it stands to reason Kazavon could not have simply knocked open a door wherever he liked. I'd bet the simplest way to gain entry is at the top. And, well, why bother with the dangers in these chambers that aren't important to us if that's our goal? Who's to say there's even another way in, considering the owner was a dragon."
Laori: "In other words, let's go out a window."
Anastasia Shoi'Ming |
Anastasia nods, “That may be our best course of action. It's worth investigating the top of the tower to see if there's a way in. And if we can avoid unnecessary dangers along the way, all the better. Let us make haste then, and head towards the tower!“
