Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
Ace cheers and begins to play a rousing, fast-paced melody on his guitar for the audience to enjoy. "Never said no to a willing audience yet!"
Perform(Rock Your Face Off): 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (20) + 24 = 44
He boldly strides to the middle of the tent as he plays before slamming on his axe with the power of Torag. The music echoes throughout the tent as Ace gets lost in the music.

The Bear: the bears take a –4 penalty on Acrobatics checks to maintain their balance on their unicycles
The Juggler: if Rogg rolls a natural 1 on any of his thrown attacks, the attack deals damage to him instead of simply missing his target
There's one more for this combat but it's a bit trickier.
Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
The bears start grabbing the food from mid-air as Hawkwren throws the rations into the ring, staying on their unicycles the whole time. The crowd applauds at the stagemanship.
Fendahl then gets one of the bears to stop pedaling, at which point it flops over to the ground. The crowd laughs and jeers at the bears and then bursts into wild cheering at Ace's appearance!
The giant frowns at getting the show taken away from him and grabs a pair of pies from midair to throw at Ace!
pie: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26

Acro: 1d20 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 1 - 4 = 4
The blue bear tries to ride past Ace and swipe at the bard but instead comes crashing down on his face instead! The crowd howls in laughter!

1. Kirrah, Hawkwren, Fendahl, and Ace
2. Juggling Giants and Unicycling Bears (rb: held)
3. Tolgarov, Maldoc, Fletch, and Romulus
You guys are up!
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawkwren thinks for a moment. "Ace! Keep working the crowd, they're applauding us. Let us deal with this....Joker! Play the Joke, there was a giant on it!"
Hawk grabs some blunt arrows, steps back, and begins firing them at the bear.

Fendahl Silvermane |
Using the mental control over the bear, Fendahl points to the side of the ring out of the way.
"Sleep!"
Kirrah will stay close to his side.

Tolgarov |
Seeing the scene, Tolgarov tried to use his spell "wisely".
He stand ready to send back one of the pie in the giant's face with a carrefuly well targeted hydraulic push.
Ready Action Hydraulic Push (vs DMD): 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (10) + 17 = 27
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
The pies smash into Ace's face, drawing blood from a gash on his forehead. Some of the cream from the pie drips onto his guitar.
Ace's eyes light up with a deep fury as he launches into a tirade against the stone giant. "This two-bit carnival has seen the last of your tired act! THIS IS ACE'S CARNIVAL NOW! RUN BEFORE I HAVE YOU GUTTED AND FED TO YOUR BEARS!"
Scathing Tirade: No save; frighten effect
This performance cannot cause a creature to become panicked, even if the target is already frightened from another effect. Scathing tirade is a mind-affecting fear effect, and it relies on audible and visual components.

@Maldoc: sure!

Maldoc Tisbane |
Maldoc tries to start a mosh pit or something... you really can't tell... as Ace starts to play angry metal.

"Fletch" |

"Easy boy. Guard." Fletch orders Romulus to stand by and guard him. The ranger himself keeps an arrow nocked, but doesn't fire yet.
Open fire on the giant if things turn ugly. Otherwise, just stay ready.

Maldoc's dancing only attracts jeers and boos from the crowd as the frightened giant starts juggling a kitchen sink and a giant-sized pair of stained underwear. He catches the items in mid-air and hurls them at Ace, to the delight of the crowd! I'm going to say it can't really flee effectively since it's stuck in the tent. It's only way to escape is to fight through you I guess. Still takes the penalty to attack though.

"Faldoc, stop dancing! Ace, work the crowd!"
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
I think you missed the part where Ace is at -10 HP.
Ace catches the sink to the face as the underwear somehow sends him unconscious.
Stabilize DC 10: 1d20 - 10 + 1 ⇒ (4) - 10 + 1 = -5
Now he is at -11 HP.
The giant is still frightened for 1d4 ⇒ 3 rounds.
EndlessForms |
Sorry, Tolgarov! Forgot about that! Would have been triggered by the first attack (the kitchen sink) so:
As the giant throws the kitchen sink at Ace, Tolgarov sends a blast of water to knock the sink back, sending it flying through the air! That should bring Ace back above 0 since that attack didn't go through.
Hawk's arrows knock the bear unconscious!
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
No worries! Ace has been unconscious for half of his life. A few more minutes added to the total can't possibly hurt, right? ;-)
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
Retcon!
Ace gets smacked in the face by the underwear as the smell overwhelms him.
"You !@#$! of !@#$!@, the !@#$ will !@#$ have to #@$@# @#$@#!@#!%!" yells the diva as he launches into a tirade against the man.
He begins to perform a dark piece on his guitar, fast-paced and deep intonations. Hold Person on the giant, Will Save; DC 22 (-2 to saves from Frightened.
"Fletch" |
Having nothing nonlethal to add to the conversation, Fletch pulls out his wand of cure light wounds and moves to Ace's side.

Out of combat!
The crowd applauds and cheers at what they have deemed was one of the best shows in a long time!
Behind the giant you notice for the first time that at the far end of the tent stands a sophisticated network of wiry bars and iron embellishments—an elaborate animal cage. The interior is furnished with overstuffed chairs and divans, and teacups and fine porcelain crowd every visible surface.
"Quite the show," a deep voice echoes from the cage. You see crocodile-headed creature dressed impeccably sipping daintily from a teacup. "Yes, quite the show. Come forward and let us chat. But I should warn you, I almost invariably lie."
DR/good and piercing; SR
Fendahl Silvermane |
Fendahl looks up at the speaker with a cynical eye.
"Hrrmm. There is no honor in lying. Who are you and what is your purpose here? ."
He will let the bear sleep.
Tolgarov |
What is that asked Tolgarov to his comrades before moving forward to the creature.
Moving the grace of a whale outside waters, Tolgarov approached the creature.
As you can see, we are more than capable with ... a lot of things. We need a small favor from you and as we made the show, quite unforgettable for generation to come, I thing we've earned this favor from you.
EndlessForms |
"I could tell you that I am Bernaditi, but would you believe me?"
"Yes, I know what-and whom-you seek. The show was memorable, and I guarantee that was no lie. I enjoyed it. But if you want my token," he grins, showing all of his crocodile teeth before taking another sip from the tea he has been stirring, "you will need to beat me at a challenge of wits."
"I offer you five questions to catch me in a lie. You must prove that I lied, that is. If you succeed, I will hand over my token freely. Should you fail, I will keep one of you as my pet." He pats the slave currently serving as his chair. The laughing crocodile then adds, "And violence and threats are truly pointless, I've cleverly hidden the token so that you won't find it. Shall we begin?"
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
Ace analyzes the creature's proposition, especially the part about whether it has truly hidden the token. Maybe the hidden token is a lie as well...
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (10) + 24 = 34
He pulls out his wand of Cure Light Wounds and patches himself up, still clearly pissed about being hit by underwear that did not belong to a lady.
If he is telling the truth, Ace will concede to his request for a battle of wits. I am clearly the smarter of the two. Finding him out for lying should be quite easy...
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawk thinks back for a moment, then tosses down the Raksasha card. "He looks exactly like the drawing....
Anyone else want to take shot at the cards? I was holding off to see if anyone else would pick some. I feel like I'm hoggin' the Harrow Deck! I would assume the Liar gets played as well.
Fendahl Silvermane |
I agree with Bold Striders picks.
Fendahl continues to watch the rakshasa with skepticism.
"If you admit to lying, how shall we trust you will keep your word once we win this contest. Customary practice would have the prize entrusted to a third party for safekeeping . "
EndlessForms |
Surprisingly the Liar doesn't work here (I think that not all of the cards are used) but the Rakshasa certainly works and gains you a +4 circumstance bonus on Sense Motive checks against Bernaditi!
A bit more about the game though: you can all play together (it's not just one-on-one), and while Sense Motive can give you a hunch that he is lying, you have to prove that he lied. So you have to be clever about the way you ask the questions: they have to be things that he would lie about and then you would be able to prove rather than just accusing him of lying.
"If you admit to lying, how shall we trust you will keep your word once we win this contest. Customary practice would have the prize entrusted to a third party for safekeeping . "
"I never said I would admit to lying! But if you can show that I lied, then I have lost and the token is yours. There will be no third parties. I lie but I don't cheat." He grins wickedly again.
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawkwren turns away from the liar, and whispers to his companions. "Surely this should be a simple affair. Is it as simple as asking him if he is a liar, then asking something that is true? I feel like I've heard this in the form of a riddle before, but I'm having trouble recollecting it."
Fendahl Silvermane |
Fendahl still cannot fathom building a game around deceit. He sees no honor in it nor in this creature.
He pauses and then nods at Hawkwren.
"Hrrmm, seems plausible, Master Hawkwen. Although he warned us he will invariably lie. After that statement, why would we trust anything else he says?"
FYI I like the idea of the riddle, but find it at odds with Fendahl's samurai principles.
Hawkwren Agricola |
Hawk thinks for a moment, glances at his companions, and takes a breath. "Five questions, you say? I think I can prove it in one." He says, leveling a stare at the man. "Are you a liar?"
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
"Couldn't we just have asked him where the token was? Then when it wasn't where he said it was, we can confront him with that evidence?" Ace states plainly.
EndlessForms |
"Are you a liar?"
Bernaditi smiles and takes a sip of tea. "Of course I am. But not compulsively."
"Fletch" |

"Ask him your question, Ace," says Fletch. "It's a good one. Also, beware. He can read our minds."
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
"Question two, where have you hidden the object we seek, rakshasa?" Ace states, clearly still a bit upset.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 24 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 24 + 4 = 31
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
"You said that violence was unnecessary because you had cleverly hidden your trinket, yet the trinket is in your pocket? One of those surely has to be a lie, Bernaditi." Ace summarizes.
Maldoc Tisbane |
Maldoc merely waits, seeing if the violence is true or not. He'll try to keep an eye on anything else that might occur while the "game" is being played.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26

"You said that violence was unnecessary because you had cleverly hidden your trinket, yet the trinket is in your pocket? One of those surely has to be a lie, Bernaditi." Ace summarizes.
"Prove it." Bernaditi responds. "Besides, who's to judge whether my pocket is clever or not?"
"I have counted three questions," he finishes.
Ace of the Flesh Puppets |
"Now, now, Bernaditi. The perceived third question was rhetorical in nature as is quite evident for someone of your mental prowess. For you to count that, it must mean that you are worried that we shall best you in this game of intellectual fortitude." Ace states in response to the rakshasa's claim.
"Either way, which pocket is the trinket in, Bernaditi?" Ace asks.
EndlessForms |
The rakshasha gives yet another toothy smile, confident in his power, and responds, "Why, my breast pocket right here."
Tolgarov |
Tolgarov stayed mute during the game. He wasn't particulary found of these games and find Ace sufficiently good at it to not intervene.
He oppenly began casting non offensive spell.

Bernaditi recognizes Tolgarov's spells and chooses to ignore the casting.
