Hearing the creak of the swinging rope, Grel stumbles backwards down the steps.
Meanwhile, Carson flips forwards and goes from vertical to almost horizontal in an instant, taking two dancing steps along the cliff wall before pirouetting to a gentle landing on the steps ahead of the crashing vial.
A slick of brown mould coats the stair between Grel and Carson.

A goblin appears atop one of the structures above the cliff and throws a bottle at the mold.

When it strikes the bottle erupts in flame for a moment and the mold expands instantly, surging along the stairs and across the cliff-face.

Carson sees the stairs burst into flames and quickly assesses his situation. "That's not good."
He moves to the top of the stairs quickly checks out the landing and then moves to the left side of the door. He is hoping that if anyone comes out to check the stairs they will look to their left and miss him completely.

Just to be clear, the stairs don't burst into flame: the flames are extinguished by the freezing mould, which then grows in response the the momentary flame.

Please note, any cold damage makes a 5ft square shrivel up but otherwise, as a hazard, think of it as a 5ft square of mild covering every bit or rock and wood there. You will need to use a splash weapon (or spend several minutes per square) to destroy it.
You could strap a scraping tool to a 10ft pole as well, there are other solutions.

Carson puts away his shortsword and pulls out his tools. Then he quietly moves the lock to he outside of the gate and attempts to open it.
He then pulls out his bow and gets ready to open the gate.

Grel's acid burns a hole in the patch of mold.
Now there are two patches, each covering an area of around 5ft, with around 5ft of space inbetween.
It's a narrow stair so acrobatics checks, and the second jump is from a standing start, but a pretty low DC (I think, will calculate) so you could jump past the mould now.
At one point she seems to look over deeper into the pleateau but you can't see what she is looking at.
