"Well they know were here." She says. Then she casts a spell.

Stone call: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6 The guys in the tower take 6 damage, no save, and the area is difficult terrain for 3 turns.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

I don't think you want to cast that spell, Yvette. Its radius is 40 feet. There is no possible place you have line of sight to that won't result in stones crashing down on you and your fellow PCs as well as the guys in the tower. I will give you a chance to retcon that and if you don't get a chance within a few hours I will assume you delayed.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Sticking Yvette on delay rather than have her deal damage to herself and the other PCs.

Hearing the shout from the sentry, Nessian frowns and snatches a potion from his belt. He drinks it down, and his bodily outline becomes wavery and indistinct. "Go cut the hounds loose!" he tells the man with him, but before the chap can act on that...

Party's up, including any revised action Yvette wishes to do. Kara, I assume you're moving out and attacking Nessian with the pre-rolled attack?

Sorry I thought it was a 20ft burst. I will cast snow ball on the one closest.

"I guess we're doing this thing, then."

Jal is right behind Karasuma, dodging through the door as his katana slides from its sheath and over his shoulder. The motion becomes a fluid attack, slicing down at Nessian's watery form.

He grins at the man, "Let's dance, cara."

Move into room (drawing katana on the way), then 2-handed power attack Nessian.
katana: 1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 - 2 = 20

I really need to figure out a better way of making this happen. This was what I was worried about.

Karasuma whips in, thin long blade slicing at the enemy leader in a dramatic clearing arc while taking care to not hit Jal.

If someone could place Artoria one square south of Odd, I would appreciate it! On iPad now

Artoria surges towards the door, bangibg flat of her sword once against her shield. She calls out to the upper levels of the tower.

snowball needs to roll to hit.

Rogar will inspire his allies. "be swift as the ancestors. But also be wise and take him alive."

He will thenwait patiently for an opening to appear.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

As Rogar says, an attack roll is needed for that.

Yvette attack roll: 1d20 + 4 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 - 4 - 4 = -3 (miss)

Outside, Odd and Artoria run close to the tower, using its bulk as defense against the sentry inside it. Inside, Jal and Kara burst forth, spilling out onto the startled War Hounder leader!

Jal miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 62
Kara miss chance, high is good: 1d100 ⇒ 58

Both of their blades connect, though Kara is disappointed to realize his perfectly-aimed kidney shot seems to miss the sweet spot. No sneak attack because of his blur, but the regular damage goes through fine

Badly injured by the double-strike, Nessian turns a wide and wild-eyed glare on you all... "UNDER ATTACK! WHERE THE HELL DID THEY COME FROM!?" he screams. "HOUNDS!"

The yellow-bandana'd Hounder claws at Jal.

To Hit Jal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

A door opens in the tower, revealing the startled stare of another War Hound (black).

The one outside tries to use his crossbow against the women on the ground, to poor effect, as the tower's bulk prevents him from having a clear shot.

Vs Artoria: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

The bolt doesn't even come close enough to break on her shield, alas.

Nessian draws a flail of his own and tries to introduce to Jal's skull!

Vs Jal: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Despite the cramped quarters, though, the Varisian is able to dodge!

Outside, the hounds set up an awful howling and barking, emboldened by the sounds of violence.

Str check?: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 + 2 + 2 = 16

For now, though, the stake holds, though the dogs strain against it, pulling the full length towards Artoria and Odd.

Round 2: Party's up! 28 damage to Nessian. Ignore the original map line of the rope for the dogs, ha.

Ok We will see.

Plaguestone Map | Gallows of Madness Combat Map

Nessian falls from Kara's accurate slash, and Jal turns his blade against Mr. Yellow Bandanna! Both drop without further outcry, blood spreading on the tower floor. The fellow in the black jacket stares at the sight of his leader on the floor, and wordlessly drops his bow, hands upraised...

"Jakko! Jakko, Nessian's down!"

The man in the tower aiming at Odd and Artoria goes pale, then retreats from the window.

Gonna say out of combat there, lol. Nessian's down, it's four against two in the tower and they are still completely demoralized over how you even got inside, and the dogs didn't manage to break their leash on their last turn.

Both the guys you just dropped can be stabilized, if you desire.

With their leader down, the will of the War Hounds deflates like a slashed sail. The two remaining thugs quickly surrender, having no desire to end up on the floor like their colleagues. The hounds outside growl for a while but they subside now that they are no longer hearing active orders to attack.

It is no trouble at all to collect the codebook from the table where Nessian had been examining it. It outlines various colored signals-- the cramped tower room is full of large-but-portable lanterns, and colored sheets of glass wrapped in hides for safe transport.

Linguistics or Profession (Soldier), DC 15:
You are able to decipher the military shorthand in which the codebook is written, and to identify the correct sequence of lantern lights that will signal retreat to the undead fleet that is presumably still headed for Absalom. It will be but the work of but a few minutes to successfully use the lanterns, and the height of the tower, to flash the correct signal out to sea!

Totes stabilizing both of them. That's the first case for the law firm of Kara, Kara, Kara, and Tazou! =P Even if Kara can't represent them for 'conflict of interest' reasons, it's still a good thing to keep them alive in case other shenaniganss are in play.

Odd kicks in the nearest door and marches up the stairs. She surveys the bodies and bloodstains with a grim gaze. "Looks like this was short. These are still breathing though," she comments. A soft touch to each's wounds and the bloodflow lessens.

"What now? Should I go get Gill?"

They are accordingly totes stabilized.

Kara and Yvette are able to make short work of the military codebook. Even without Yargos's study of it, they are able to recognize the last signal light combination that will signal the fleet to rest once more below the waves.

The Pathfinders light several of the lanterns and use the roof of the intact siege tower to send the signal out towards the morning sea! As dawn gilds the waves with a blazing path, the Silent Tide of Taldor is called off, and-- though this is too far away for the Pathfinders to see with the naked eye-- spectral ships crewed by more cloaked figures sink again beneath the waves...

Yargos huffs and puffs up towards you all. "Excellent work. Excellent work. Please convey my thanks to Adril. And you may also convey that I have, indeed, decided to sell the codebook to him, aha ha. Ha."

The rain clouds that made your night so miserable break away, and the morning sun shines warm and bright over Absalom once more.

Thus concludes the actively GM'd portion of this scenario! Feel free to RP out any winding up you may wish to do. I'll get Chronicles out in a few hours. Sorry for the anticlimactic bad guys; it definitely suffers from season zero-age. Hope it was fun all the same!

Karasuma watches the lack of invasion quietly, thankfully, then glances at Yargos.

"As your attorney, I strongly recommend you remand yourself to the custody of Artoria Pendragon until this matter can be resolved in the courts, for your own safety and protection. Your testimony will be key and crucial in the weeks and months ahead if this goes to trial, and you will be sequestered appropriately."

Karasuma hasn't forgotten the mercenary nature of Gill leading to all of this happening in the first place, and while he may represent the fellow, he's also no fool and is well aware that those who would crawl under a rock will do so at the first chance and never be seen again.

No worries, there was still some terror involved, and... thank you for running, and for everyone else playing!

Earlier

Artoria walks the tower, making sure it is clear of all remaining villains. She sighs numerous times as she notes the ease with which the defenders were slain. As time passes, her energy just drains from her. When she finally sheathes her sword and stows her shield, she sits down against the wall, seeming to have aged a couple decades.

"A loss, a terrible loss."

She shakes her head.

"When you start stabbing them in the back, they start killing their prisoners. You start killing your prisoners, they start poisoning your food. You start poisoning their food, they start killing children. You start...."

She clenches her jaw, staring at the wall. She doesn't appear to be talking to anyone in particular.

"When all that matters is winning, war becomes a race to the bottom, to the worst parts of our nature."

She lets her head fall back against the wall, and she closes her eyes.

"It wasn't worth it then, and it's not worth it now. I'd rather die again. I'd rather lose everything again." She begins with a tone of grief and regret, but by the end, her voice carries nothing but resolve.

She sits a few moments listening to the sound of her breath, remembering the last time she died, sitting with her back up against an oak tree near Camlann field. Archimedes rustles up against her, resting his skull on hers.

She opens her eyes and softly turns to the owl. She removes a gauntlet and caresses him with the back of her hand.

She smiles.

"No, I don't want to lose you, Archimedes. Merlin would have my head."

Now

Artoria nods, a grave expression filling her face and leaking into her body.

"I swear that I shall ensure you are treated fairly, Yargos. As long as you are within my charge, I am responsible for your safety."

Don't take Artoria's comments as an indictment from me! She's my attempt at an intelligent and world-weary paladin, so she can be a bit of a downer sometimes. I had a good time, and thanks to everyone for playing and Dien for running!
