GMDQ's Skull and Shackles

Game Master DeathQuaker

A small band of mariners find themselves press-ganged into service on the Wormwood, led by the fearsome Barnabas Harrigan. Will they turn their misfortune to glory on the high seas, or will folly lead them to an ignominious watery death?

Female Changeling? Magician 20

The d3s are simple and quick, good idea.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

It's quiet around here guys. I know I'm on staycation so I can nap plenty already, no need to keep the noise down :-)

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

Sorry, just waiting to see if there's other responses before carrying on. This scene won't take long.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

No worries, I'm just playing :)

LET'S GET READY TO RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMBLE!

Female Changeling? Magician 20

I've been in contact with our wonderful GM. She's about to go on vacation and hopes to be checking in by Sunday with a Wednesday return. In the meantime she has asked me to pass along this information:

Corwin, please roll 3 d3's for yourself, then another 3 d3's for your opponent for the rock/paper/scissors of your combat so we can move that along.

Thank you!

ack, somehow the discussion didn't show up for me! I'll go ahead and post the actual dicey part here
me: 3d3 ⇒ (3, 1, 3) = 7 them: 3d3 ⇒ (1, 2, 3) = 6

Female Changeling? Magician 20

No worries!

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

Sorry folks! I was going to post Friday a.m. and things suddenly got hectic, and I was flying out Sat. Thanks Lathiira.

Assigning alphabetically, If 1 = paper, 2 = rock, and 3 = scissors, and Corwin's martial flexibility allows him to win ties, he wins all three rounds, and is the undisputed winner. He wins 250 gp and takes 1/4 of his up in damage.

He may leave now or fight 1 more bout for another 250 win, but there is only time for 1 healing spell.

M Human Two-handed fighter-7 | HP 95/95 | AC 20, T 10, FF 20 | F+9 R+3 W+5 CMD 22| Init+0 Perception+8 | Brawler: 2/2 | Current:

I have to do one more bout of travelling. This will probably be it for a while though. Looks like Tues thru Sunday. Will do my best to check in as I can, but no guarantees. Apologies in advance

Female Changeling? Magician 20

No problem. If Corwin's up for another round Thren'll provide a little healing. If not she'll still heal him of course.

It sounds like Corwin is all done. I'm going to give it this evening just in case. After that I'll try and finish discussing construction while GMDQ is away.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Figured out how you want your wing of the stronghold set up yet?

Lathiira, I'm falling back on your original suggestion with one change:
bedroom, lavatory, trophy room
war room, sitting room, empty (workstation size)

Instead of an office, how about an empty space large enough to be a workstation later? I've got some amorphous thoughts about a workstation for crafting or a profession.

Related to that, maybe we should look at a carpentry or shipbuilding workstation. We could convert the cell (12) or those odd-shaped store rooms (11 a & b).

Re-reading your suggestion and the room descriptions also convinced me about a sitting room instead of a common room. It doesn't upgrade the same way, but I like the little bonus it gives to social skills. It's a nice reminder of the purpose of the room. Also, can your arrange the trophy room near the sitting room? It should be easy to step over and show off for guests, right? ;)

Female Changeling? Magician 20

I don't see why we can't. We could also put the door to the trophy room off of the war room for that matter, but the sitting room is better. The workstation's also a good idea. I might suggest it be set up for any of these: leather, weaponsmithing, jewelry, or ropemaking. Those are all things that might make sense for us as pirates. Just note that leather is probably gonna smell, weaponsmithing means a hot forge.

So what I'm hearing is this: sitting room and trophy room towards the front. War room, workstation in the middle. Bedroom (extra large) and lavatory in the back. Do I got that right?

The cell I think is in a better position for use as a workstation. It's closer to the drydock so if we need to make some stuff for a ship that's not too big it's not a long haul. If we need internal items (e.g. furniture) it's not that bad a spot.

The store rooms I haven't found a good idea for yet. I think we need one for sure. But Kroop should have his own space I think too. So I'm up for ideas what to do with them.

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

Your drydock includes a shipwright's workshop (which also will do for carpentry) already. It is a "building" consisting of effectively a dock, the pump/canal apparatus, a workshop, and an office.

I think I've mentioned this before, but Sandara and Kroop would urge you to keep the cell as a cell, as you may need to keep prisoners from enemy ships or punish crew. Moreover, the alchemically reinforced bars (hardness 11, hp 120, break DC 31) are extremely hard to come by--and would be extraordinarily difficult to remove, as they are built into the walls. You think probably the original builders of the area used stone shape to fit the bars around the pins that hold the cell walls in place. You'd probably need an adamantine saw (which would still be damaged as it was used) or hire someone with the stone shape spell to remove the cell walls. Either way, it would cost MORE to convert the cell into anything else than what it is because of the costs and labor it would take to dismantle it. (This is also your GM not so subtly telling you, at the risk of handholding and undue interference, that you may need a good place to keep prisoners--YOU ARE PIRATES--and that it would be a bad idea to get rid of a valuable thing you already have that would probably be impossible to build a new version of later that is as good as the one you have. If you decide to get rid of it, I won't stop you, but I feel responsible for outlining the issues here.)

If you want more stuff built around the cove, there is nothing stopping you from building into the cove area with wooden or stone structures--it would just cost normal. Indeed, I think the "unfinished" appearance of the area was by design that if the area was going to be used as a stronghold by PCs, to give them space to build extra rooms as they saw fit. And if you're going to use stone shape to help with the building, you can widen and smooth the storage areas and cave walkways along the cove area.

You'll want to keep some storage space as just storage space, for all your phat lewt (and supplies for less important stuff like food or water or clothes).

I have returned from my one trip, and will be headed off to the other Thursday or Friday. I should be able to check in by phone when I can't by computer.

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

It also occurs to me that as I've also received some freelance work (unexpectedly, but cool) so I may be a little slow.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Not a problem. We all have our lives and have been a bit slow lately anyway. Hopefully we'll entertain ourselves in Hell's Harbor :)

Alright, I am off to a Quaker conference for the weekend. I will be checking in by phone, but may be slow.

Quaker conferences have always sounded like a good time to me (though I guess my impression is actually more of Quaker summer camp...one of my best friends growing up was Quaker, and she always had a lot of stories!). Enjoy yourself!

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

I grew up Quaker but never went to camp, and there are injokes between campers I will never get... but apparently it is a good time for all. What I went to was our Annual Business sessions.... which is more fun than it sounds, but does include trying to have 200-300 people in a room come to unity on a decision which can be trying when one is not in the right spirit. The music and workshops and fellowship are tremendous however.

In other news -- I got back Tuesday but have been catching up like crazy and finishing the editing project. I will push us forward I *hope* tomorrow, with sincere apologies for the radio silence. Everytime I went online to post something interrupted me.

Male

So sorry for my radio silence - had some unexpected hiccups and now in the throes of moving - much less time than expected. D: Please bear with me as we get everything sorted out...will check back in ASAP.

Bot me as needed.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

No problem The Norv. This is when school's getting ready to start, so people are also busy getting ready for it by shopping and getting lesson plans ready. Right thermopyle?

P.S. Did we ever settle on the way we were going to set up your wing of the fortress Captain?

Pretty close. For me it's more like "finish those upgrades" and "make sure we're ready for the spike in load when classes start." I do IT at a college, but no teaching.

We got close on the building. GMDQ helpfully reminded us not to pave over our awesome jail cells.

We left off at...

Yes, you do have that right.

We didn't pick the kind of workstation yet. You mentioned the downsides of leather working and weapon smithing, and I agree, too smelly, hot and noisy. That leaves jewelry and rope making from the original suggestions. Should probably add a sewing room to the list. That might incorporate working with leather that's already treated. I think I lean to sewing and jewelry. Does anyone care to make the case for rope making? Very utilitarian, but is it as fun?

Female Changeling? Magician 20

I will refrain from commenting on 'is ropemaking fun?' ;-)

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Being serious, I'd go for sewing. We have Mary who's definitely got skills there.

not sure if it's fun, but it is interesting. There are these wooden frames with dowels that let you twist the fibers to make cords, and twist the cords together to make rope. Some of them are fancier than others, having a system of pulleys and such, but the simple ones are sufficient.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Hey guys, you're supposed to fall asleep AT the opera, not before! :)

Male Sylph Witch 7 |HP: 49/49| AC/T/FF 19/15/16| F 2 R 4 W 5 CMD 17| Init +3, Per +3, Prof (Sailor) +1

I do not in any way intend this as a criticism, so please don't take it that way. I'm loving the notion of stunts and showmanship in Chelish Opera. That all makes sense, but IRL I've worked with Opera singers who refused to walk up a staircase because of the effect it would have on their "instrument." Thren is quite a performer.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Thren is far from your modern-day Opera singer. She lives a life beneath the stars, the wind and waves her friends. Modern opera singers aren't 7th-level bards that have been skewered by spears the size of tent poles, smashed by golems of glass, or impaled sea hags on their blades. She's a bit more robust. And well, let's face it, Thren is rather reckless :)

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

This is Shackles Opera, it operates by different standards---not to mention healing magic can mend ragged vocal chords!!

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Could be worse. Could be Chelish Theatre of the Real. There's one opera where all the actors actually die by the end and it's a great honor for them to get to perform it.

Just when I think I've heard the worst of the Chels...

Hey all - if anyone has any brainstorms about other places or methods for getting info here in town please share. Also, we did some shopping in Plumetown, but is there anything else we need? Would it pay to try and get some high-level scrying done? Can we afford the level that would actually help us here?

Mechanically, I could spend another day rolling Diplomacy, gather information, but Yoha's Graveyard may be too esoteric to get much beyond what we've already heard.

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

I can say that asking around, you can probably pay for no more than 4th level spellcasting here. The spy-hunting paranoia makes it harder for powerful spellcasters to act openly.

WHERE you seek information can be as important as a roll. Do you want to talk to a priest? A merchant? A pirate?

Do you want to go imp hunting? Spy hunting?

You can also continue to work to build Infamy. You've earned one point. You can earn up to 5 in a given settlement (until you hit your max).

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Friendly reminders:

1) Just because the bard is off aspiring to diva status, it does not follow that the rest of the party is relegated to the background. Someone's got to do the important legwork of fact-finding and boosting our Infamy while Thren's off being Thren. We should be at 19 for our Infamy score, so keep it up!

2) Have we all hit the busy back to school/Labor Day weekend run yet? If not, post! LOL

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

Yes, I am waiting for more players to post before continuing. I am going to try to make that more clear in future.

I would also like to remind you all that of you have checked in the thread but have nothing to add, TO POST SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT. So we are not waiting on you.

And general question: please be honest. Is this boring? Is there something you would rather be doing in game? I want to give folks an opportunity for building infamy and the like, but this is also a good time for role play with each other and the NPCs. Is there something you want me to throw at you? Someone you want to meet? If you're not having fun I need to know so I can try to fix it.

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

FIRST OF ALL -- I apologize--somehow I missed the posts that happened later on Thursday.

Second of all, I am feeling a bit of brain drain when it comes to this campaign. I am certain it is temporary, but I need a break.

I am declaring a week hiatus starting now, until next Sunday. By all means, continue to post, converse, roleplay, talk amongst yourselves. I'm going to work a little on this segment as well as the upcoming exploration of Yoha's Graveyard. Thren if you want to go ahead and post some performance rolls AND Fortitude saves (you are going to be worked very hard) for your opera adventure please do so.

None of you have answered my question above, so I will also repeat: I would really like some honest feedback about how you feel this campaign is going. The non-response to the above message makes me want to assume you ARE bored and are afraid to tell me. 1) Please don't be afraid, 2) my priority is your having fun so I need to know what I am doing right and wrong. I am a big girl and I can take it.

I know the Norv has been buried under moving house. I'd appreciate a check in from the rest of you to get a sense of where we are.

Thanks.

To answer Thren's question (and in part GMDQ's), yes, the start of school and the holiday weekend caught up to me. My mistake was not just asking for a few days off. Instead I kept telling myself "I'll make time to post soon." I'm sorry about that. A week off sounds fine to me and I'll work on being ready to go next Sunday.

I'm excited about taking on Yoha's Graveyard, I just want to make sure we're ready. I think we have some good leads, so there's plenty for us to do while Thren is "off being Thren." ;) Honestly, I'm looking forward to the opera too. I think it's a really cool side activity.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Strange, none of this appeared to me until now (2:30 am Tuesday).

I am looking forward to the trip to Yoha's Graveyard. But the opera will be fun too. Thren finally gets to (try to) feed her ego!

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Oh, and Thermopyle: "off being Thren" should now be part of the ship's lingo. "Where's the first mate?" "Off being Thren." "Oh. I'll stay out of the way then."

When the opera comes, do make sure you dress appropriately. Let's not offend anyone going in underdressed, it's a classy establishment. Besides, maybe you'll get to hobnob a bit, meet the Lord, spread good word of our lootings and pillagings!

I make no promises that Ultros will be at the opera, nor the Phantom :)

I'm having a great time. Maybe I'm laying back too much because I'm a new.

Boys, let's go on a shopping montage to get properly suited for the opera. Special K doesn't even wear a shirt most of the time, so I'm doubting he has formal clothes. And Corwin doesn't strike me as the type to have packed his dress blues.

The graveyard scares me, but I'm all for it.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

Love the idea of the shopping montage! Thren's already building a wardrobe and has sleeves of many garments, she's good to go there.

you make a good point. Corwin does not have fancy clothes. A small shopping trip may be in order

Shopping trip!

Here's a bit of me thinking out loud. I put it behind a spoiler tag because we might have some other discussion to get through first. I just want to have it handy for later.

Yoha's Graveyard notes:

The mist we hit outside of Hell Harbor is probably just a taste of what we'll be facing. I think it did offer a bit of hope - the first symptom was hunger for regular food. So we need to take lots of extra chow.

Maheem progressed all the way to flesh-eating that same day. We knew we needed to move fast and that just drives it home.

Fighting undead - Lark needs to ask Emberar how much he knows on the topic. I've not looked at those rules in a long time. Do we need some alternate weapon types to get past resistances?

We need some silver and tools for working it - for filling in around the seal (the amulet).

Ghoral-Rey + Land Battle Map + Ship Battle Map + Loot+ Besmara's Whim and her Crew

Hey folks! I had a busier day today than expected and I've also been fighting a stubborn cold, so I am going to get some rest tonight, but update WILL come tomorrow.

Thanks very much for checking in, I do appreciate it. It is very hard to interpret things sometimes so I am always open for feedback.

You all have fought enough undead to know special resistances may vary from creature to creature, and of course positive energy hurts them worst. You have specifically fought ghouls and know they (if what awaits you is more of same, which you only have hearsay to go by) do not have any special weapon weaknesses, but their attacks have nasty side effects.

Anyone with Knowledge Religion can roll to see if they know more.

There are certainly clothing shops in Hell Harbor, including upscale ones toward the center and part of town close to the opera house.

You all also haven't chosen where you will be staying overnight. Thren has been given free lodging in a place called "The Ruin" which is more classy than it sounds.

Good night.

Female Changeling? Magician 20

I smell a shopping trip for the boys :)
