Vlazis 'The Beloved' Chibuzo |
Vlazis greets the captain with a warm but serious smile and handshake. Thank you for the use of your vessel, captain. I trust that with our assistance we should have a safe and simple voyage.
GM Bret |
"Good. Now get aboard!"
Once everyone is on board, the captain and Ewem finish preparations and then cast off from the dock.
Once the ship is underway, the captain comes into the cabin.
"Given your responses on the dock, I doubt you were briefed on likely dangers." He looks around at the group, to see if any of you know.
As Pathfinders, you all know that the Tamran lodge was founded in 4705 AR. In response, Multhune declared the Pathfinder Society enemies of the state and refuses to work with your organization.

You know that Nirmathas and Multhune were once a province of Cheliax. The province declared independence around the time of the Chelish civil war. Soon after declaring independence, the province split in two -- those in Nirmathas calling it the Freedom War and those in Multhune calling it the Northern Rebellion.
Although the borders between the two nations have somewhat stabilized, there continue to be sporadic attacks against each other.
The Nirmathi are outmatched by the Molthuni in numbers, and so they rely on guerilla tactics to win their war of independence. To this day, the capital Tamran and its surrounds are not protected by a single army but by loose collection of militias.
Anywhere there are boats and sailors, there are likely to be undead. It is difficult to recover the body of a sailor that is washed overboard, and extremely uncommon for them to get a proper burial unless there is a friendly aquatic settlement in the area.
You aren't aware of any aquatic settlements in Lake Encarthan.
You have heard that there are Razmiran 'faith barges' that ply these waters asking for donations and prayers to The Living God. Rumor is those who hesitate to give generously are encouraged at sword-point.
There are also privateers sailing in the areas around Nirmathas. Like any problem, those in Nirmathas blame Multhune for these attacks. Multhune is just as quick to blame Nirmathas for any problems they face.
Vlazis 'The Beloved' Chibuzo |
It can be difficult to properly consecrate the bodies of any who perish on the water, so various unquiet spirits can prove troublesome. Or the misused remains themselves.
Kriklishik |
"Natural creatures aren't likely to be a threat. There are a few large crustaceans and fish (and this water is right for electric eels), so falling in presents hazards of its own, but a body of water this size isn't likely to contain anything that could threaten the ship. Absent dangerous weather, nature shouldn't be a problem."
GM Bret |
The captain grimaces and utters a "Tch!" but nods his head in agreement with Vlazis. "Watch out for those, many want to drag you down to the depths and drown you!"
Looking towards Kriklishik, he says "With the current load, we are riding pretty low in the water. Some of the large crabs can be a problem."
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
"Of course, riding in contested waters is never a picnic, either, and Tamran's a logistical mess defense-wise -- it's a bunch of militias each defending the city. Might have to be ready for several different checkpoints and lots of papers when we get into town."
Ramon offers, then considers.
"Oh, and you can kinda get a feel for folks depending on how they refer to the Chelaxian Civil War. Nirmathans call it 'The Freedom War', and Molthunian folks call it 'The Northern Rebellion'. Nirmathas is much more clandestine about their operations, Moltune's more stand-up, far as I remember."
Should keep an eye out for business opportunities, Exchange could make a good chunk keeping Tamran supplied, I'd imagine...
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |

"Oh, boy. You should probably pull up a stool and get something to drink, this could take a while." Ray starts, then considers.
"Okay, short version, there was once a big empire named Taldor. Some of their explorers even reached Tian Xia, and founded a colony-nation called Amanandar. The empire wasn't as big as Lung Wa, but for Avistan it was pretty sizable. Any rate, like empires do, there was dissent in the territories. Half the nation broke off into a second empire called 'Cheliax'. Things went along swimmingly until Cheliax started getting dark and dirty with worship of devils and turning their whole government into a... I don't have a good term for it. That's when their civil war started.
Any rate, the territories of the Chelaxian Empire said 'check, please!', and left the Empire for the most part, because they didn't want to be tied in with devil-worshippers and such, and there was a lot of independent minds and writings going around.
Molthune broke away, and shortly after that, folks in northern Molthune realized that nothing had really changed with the so-called 'freedom', and rebelled against the southern half of the country, and more or less won their mini-Civil War after seven years of hard fighting.
So yeah, it's kind of a mess politically."
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
After Shayna chimes in, Ray glances to Thomas, making a comment in a different language.
Fran Belmont |
"I've heard that sometimes priests from Razmiran ride around out here asking for donations to their Living God," Fran chimes in. "And that...they're not afraid to get a bit pushy if people are hesitant to donate. There's also the critters that Mister Kriklishik mentioned and even privateer ships that sail around Nirmathas. Both Nirmathas and Molthune seem to like blaming each other for that one."
She shakes her head. "I hope we don't run into any of those things, but kitty and I will do what we can to help if we do."
GM Bret |
The captain seems more than happy to the various members of your group explain the situation. Well, at least they have a fair idea of the dangers. That is good!
"I don't know all the details, but the fighting between Multhune and Nirmathas never really stopped. One other thing, it is the people of Multhune that want paperwork. Nirmathas could care less."
With a nod of his head, he says "I will let you work out your own duty roster. Just keep a watch for dangers and don't get in the way of me or Awem as we sail."
He then leaves you and goes back out on deck.
The ship is on slide two. If you haven't already, request edit permission.
Fran Belmont |
"Um...okay, so who needs to sleep a full eight hours?" Fran asks as the captain heads out on deck. "I uh, actually need to do that if I want to be at my best. So I should take a first watch or last watch," she says apologetically.
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
"I can handle an overnighter, if needed. I'm not too bad at seeing things in the dark and I don't think I need beauty sleep?" Ray offers.
Kriklishik |
"Captain, how dark does it really get at night? In open water, with a decent moon, we should be able to see pretty well, right?"
Kriklishik looks around.
"Is there somewhere high the watch usually stays? I'm not *awful* at climbing.
"But anyway, I can take any shift. Do we need to divide it up like we're camping, though? I personally don't mind sleeping during daylight hours. Why don't Ray and I take the entirety of third watch. Shayna, you can join us if you wish. The other three could take first watch, and we could all be together on deck for second watch."
If we're already at sea, now's a good time for me to remove my Hat and reveal myself to the party and the ship's crew. If not, I'll wait.
"I'm not too bad at night watches. We can wake you all if you're needed. I'd heard there's usually a bell or something for that?"
GM Bret |
You are under way and currently the captain and the first mate are out on the deck. The ship is on a large lake, so I hesitate calling that at sea. :)
Although the module has a different description of the ship, I'm going with the one I have a map for. :)
Kriklishik |
If you're referring to my question about a crow's nest, I wasn't sure if it was just assumed to be on top of the mast.
Kriklishik removes the tie from his hair, and immediately his complexion seems to redden ever so slightly. His long black hair, rather than cascading loosely when freed from the thin cord, disappears. In its place, a short-cropped red mop of unkempt hair barely reaches a pair of nubby red-specked horns above his brow. In his hand, Kriklishik holds a simple flop-brimmed hat.
"Also, if it matters, I'm an Ifrit. I apologize for the subterfuge; the letter said to be discreet. But yeah; the darkness won't be a problem."
GM Bret |
We will assume the question about night was asked before the captain leaves.
"We generally pull on to a small island or anchor ourselves. Boats don't turn very fast, so sailing at night is dangerous. It varies with the weather, but visibility is generally alright. You can get a fog at times though."
No crows nest, but if you can take 10 on acrobatics to balance on the mast with a light wind, go for it!
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
"In case anyone wonders, I'm what folks call an 'Undine'. It's kind of hard for me to hide it, so I wasn't even trying." Ray offers politely once Krik reveals his hidden identity.
K:Planes(For Ifrit info): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
She gives an approving glance to Krik. "And I'm not tied into the stupidity of some elements hating other elements blah blah blah. It's really bad for business."
"I suggest when we're on watch, we take opposite ends of the ship, and then walk non-widdershins around every so often. Keeping moving can help spot things that standing in one place won't."
Kriklishik |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
Krik looks suddenly concerned.
"We're supposed to hate each other? Oh. Hmm. Nobody told me that. Well, if it's all the same to you, I think I'll leave that aside. Seems to me mistrust among the elemental planes was what caused most of the mess of the past year, isn't it?
But anyway, unless you're opposed, I'm still happy to take third watch in its entirety with you and Shayna. But, if that's how we're going to do it,"
Kriklishik looks around at the rest of the party.
"I should probably get some rest. Someone wake me for supper?"
With that, Kriklishik hangs his cloak on a protruding nail and, folding his chain shirt to use as a pillow, stretches out on the hammock, facing the wall.
Fran Belmont |
"Oh wow, I've not worked with anyone fire-blooded before," Fran stares with wonder as Kriklishik drops his disguise. "Or water-blooded either," she adds with a nod to Ray. "But kitty and I are still quite new to the Society so we've not been on very many assignments yet. I suppose the longer we work, the bigger variety of people that we'll be able to meet."
As Krik stretches out in his hammock, she nods at him. "Of course! And the watch order you suggested sounds good to me. Mr. Sunshine and I would enjoy having the company instead of having to sit and watch alone."
Vlazis 'The Beloved' Chibuzo |
Vlazis is happy to give a less jaundiced view of the Chelish Civil War to any who are interested. As for the watches,The First King is well aware that duty knows no limits. I will face no undue consequences from a disruption to my sleep. So long as I am given appropriate time for my morning devotions.
Shayna Therinor |
Well, when it's my watch, make sure there is some coffee or tea brewed. It'll help keep us awak and fend off the cold. I'm going to stretch out for a bit of a nap. See you in a bit... Shayna says as she heads towards the cabin for a nap.
Thomas Hasoshi |
I wake up and 14 new posts. Nice. :)

Where'd you pick up the eastern speech?"
Contrary to his elemental blooded colleagues, Thomas isn't in any hurry to reveal what he actually is. Deception and mischief is a natural thing to most of his kind.
Kriklishik |
So it sounds like everyone agrees:
1st watch (about 6am-2pm): Fran, Thomas, and Vlazis
2nd watch (about 2pm-10pm): All
3rd watch (about 10pm-6am): Krik, Ray, and Shayna
Sound good to everyone?

Day watch as well...
Guess I'm going to have to read up on disguises. The trip is about a week long.

Day watch as well...
Guess I'm going to have to read up on disguises. The trip is about a week long.
Well, I was assuming 8 hour watches (see above). It's not like we have to get up and travel.
Also, if it matters to you, my disguise was from the hat. Which makes it a standard to don or doff.
GM Bret |
Sorry, hadn't read closely enough. You are right, the watches do cover the whole time.
It wasn't your disguise I was thinking of, it was Thomas's. The group knows what Kriklishik is, and I generally only both to check when the skill is low or it is a significant NPC.
Thomas Hasoshi |
Oh? Then i wonder if el capitain knows enough of Tian Xia's races to recognize kitsune by their eyes' color.

Kriklishik |
Kriklishik's daily routine, barring any interruptions:
.
.
.
.
6am - Come off watch, pass any pertinent info to the captain and the next watch, and head to the cabin and straight to the hammock
2pm - Wake up, eat
2:30pm - Find 2-3 people to chat with about the happenings I may have missed, and discuss my watch
3:00pm - Practice controlling my blasts. (But ONLY off the side of the boat!) [li]
Level 5 I get quite a few useful abilities, so this represents my honing those abilities. Purely roleplay. They won't actually exist until I level up.)
- sometime in the evening - dinner with the rest of the party
10pm - Begin watch
Watch tasks - deck swabbing, armor maintenance, etc.. Anything that is repetitive and simple and can be done while watching without causing distraction. Oh, and also keeping watch. :)
6am - come off watch...
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
0545 Turnover to next watchstander
0615 Relieved of watch, rest.
1400 Wake up, check to see if things changed on a given day. No mechanical changes, but half the time when Ramon wakes up they're male, the other half female. They have clothing for both and it's more for roleplay purposes than anything else.
1430 Go swimming unarmored if the boat is moving slow enough to keep up with. Otherwise stare at the water for about an hour wistfully, and make light conversation.
1530 Get back on board if swimming was had, and get geared up, including gear maintenance. Discuss and or conversate as appropriate.
2145 Arrive at watchstation and start talking with watchstander about events of watch.
2215 Take over watch with others. Focus is completely on the watch duties.
This is pretty standard stuff, I wonder if this is the first mission for some of the other Pathfinders here.
Vlazis 'The Beloved' Chibuzo |
Vlazis is used to a regimented existence, even while dealing with the chaos that so many pathfinders bring to the world, and a ship and a couple of shifts on guard is not enough of a disruption to affect that.
Watch tasks: Explaining the true story of the Chelish Civil War, and Her Imperial Majestrix's ending of the chaos thereof, He's biased, but does spin a good yarn, tending to any minor repairs or cleaning of his personal effects as he despises looking like some sort of ragamuffin, getting to know his Pathfinding fellows better, and of course, spreading the good word of Dispater to any who ask, though he doesn't directly evangelize.
Leisure tasks: Vlazis makes a particular point of getting to know a different crew-member each day, and aside from that can usually be found curling up with a good book or The Good Book.
Shayna Therinor |
Shayna will spend her shift on watch from the top of the mast looking for troubleHave a good acrobatics...plus a 10 should do it . She will spend her off time stretching and exercising, as well as drinking hit beverages.
Fran Belmont |
I'm guessing that by the time we board on the first day it's probably either late into what would be 1st Watch or partway into 2nd Watch?
Although she does suffer some initial sickness due to having not traveled by boat before (and skips dinner later that evening as a result), Fran otherwise seems to settle into a routine aboard the ship with little trouble. She does her best to keep a sharp lookout during her watches but at times finds herself distracted by the view from the ship as well as by pestering chatting with her newest companions.
"Thomas, you said you came all the way from Tian Xia, right? Father showed me a map once and I remember it was very far away from here! Why did you come to this part of the world, if I'm not being rude by asking?"
"Vlazis, would you tell me a little about Dispater? I'm afraid I don't really know very much about him."
"Ray, you have so many different outfits and they're all so pretty! Most people I've met seem to dress to be practical and maybe comfortable instead of colorful or anything else."
"Hey Shayna, did it take you very long to learn to fight like you have? I'm not an expert but it looks like you're a little differently-armed and armored than most warriors I've seen."
"Krik...um, may I call you Krik? How do you do that? I don't see you using any words or really even any gestures at all but it looks like magic that you're doing!"
______
When it isn't her turn at watch, she largely takes advantage of the opportunity to sleep - though sometimes she does sit in her hammock or out on deck under the stars and whisper softly to Mr. Sunshine as they watch the water slide by the ship.
Mr. Sunshine |
For his part, Mr. Sunshine gradually relaxes as the hours slip by and the ship isn't beset by horrible monsters or sank by pirates. He even seems as if he begins enjoying patrolling the deck with Fran during her watches.
We'll let nothing slip by us, will we Fran? Just be careful that you don't actually slip, okay? I don't think I could save you from the water if you fell in!
Kriklishik |
"Oh, this?"
Krik manifests a little ball of fire in his hand.
"You know, I'm not really sure. It's just something I kindof, well, do."
He closes is hand, and the fire vanishes.
"I just, well, will the fire to spring forth, and out it flies. But it always has to be directed at something. I'm working on a way to just bring forth an unfocused gout of flame, but so far it always has to be focused on something."
Krik gets a far away look in his eye. "Well, except for Flicker."
Will you come out and meet my new friends? They'd probably be interested to see you.
Kriklishik opens his hand again, and the fire returns. But this time, the flames seem to coalesce into a familiar shape - that of a scorpion.
"I don't really feel comfortable putting him down on the boat. I don't think he'd burn anything, but I've never actually tried it. But anyway, this is Flicker."
Shayna Therinor |
Well, it took a while to get my training. My older brother Mykel is a Pathfinder, and he received his training in the military. Since I am a woman, military service is not an option. So, my father and his brothers; all former military, trained me themselves when I expressed my desire to be an agent. This falcata is the centerpiece os the fighting style back home, the Rondelero. My brother doesn't know I am an agent yet. I figured it's the family business....a few of my cousins are agents as well.
Thomas Hasoshi |
Thomas doesn't have a set-time routine. Instead, he practices his jabs with the Sibat and tonfa in the morning, and some exercises to stay flexible.
Otherwise, he'd fill time with enjoying the view of the sea, and try playing with Mr Sunshine, if the latter allowed it.
"Thomas, you said you came all the way from Tian Xia, right? Father showed me a map once and I remember it was very far away from here! Why did you come to this part of the world, if I'm not being rude by asking?"
At that time, Thomas was partially hanging from the ropes. He nimbly climbs down.
"No, you're not rude by asking.
Well, i came with a merchant who works on the western continent on behalf of Tian Xia. He has a warehouse in Absalom, he ships wares between our continents, shipping . So when he doesn't require my presence, i get dispatched on these adventures, if he deems it useful."
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |

"Shayna, I may not be a rich Pathfinder by any means, but one of the things I learned in Druma is that if one has the money, one should not be afraid to spend the money on the things one appreciates, in proper measure." Ray offers with a rather boring monotone, then smirks a bit, getting rather bubbly and giddy. "When someone has to change outfits on a daily basis, trying to go with something boring and plain would seem like the easy way out, but nicer clothes make a person feel better about themselves. At least, that's been my take on things? And the dress IS pretty, isn't it?"
Back when I was a bit more focused on matters mercantile and still 'hungry' and less caring about the consequences of the contracts I was writing as a merchant.
When you make the wrong contract with the wrong dragon, though, and they put their blood in it, well. Things get real quite quick, and it's enough to make anyone reconsider their life choices. Still, it's refreshing to have a counter-point to the tales I'm weaving about Avistanian history -- we learn by teaching, and we teach by learning. Thank you."
Shayna Therinor |
Oh don't get me wrong, I love dressing up as much as most women. It's just that it is kind of difficult to parry and thrust in a dress and heels. I prefer more serviceable clothes when I travel. At home I have an abundance of dresses and such, even a robe from Tien my cousin brought back for me. The silk is so soft...
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
"I avoid heels for the most part, they're one of those fashion accessories that really doesn't help with balance. But you'd be surprised what a good battle dress is like. Form, function, AND fashion, all in one neat package."
Ray offers, then considers. "No argument on silks, though. They're pretty amazing."
Fran Belmont |
With Krik
"Huh...I've heard stories about people who can shape arcane magic and divine magic at will," Fran responds, listening to the ifrit with interest. "And I even met someone on my first assignment who swore that his powers came from somewhere within his mind - and I believe him. He never lifted a finger or spoke a word to use his magic. It was amazing..." Fran's voice trails off and a rather dreamy, faraway look creeps over her face. Then she realizes that Krik is still standing there looking at her and she drags her thoughts back to the present.
"Er, anyway, that's a really neat power that you have. I do hope you're able to learn to do more with it," she continues, blushing a little. But when Flicker makes his appearance, any thoughts of a handsome, brooding man vanish and her eyes open wide with surprise and delight.
"Oh, how wonderful! Hello Flicker, it's very nice to meet you," she smiles. "Does he live in your mind? I met a woman on my first assignment and the ghost of her husband lived in her head. Well, I mean I suppose he wasn't alive since he was a ghost but his spirit still lingered."
______
With Shayna and Ray
"Huh...it must be nice to have already had some familiar faces around when you joined the Society. Er, perhaps not your brother, but surely you've crossed paths with one of your cousins that joined, right?" the half-elf asks, looking rather impressed by Shayna's answer. "That doesn't seem very nice that they won't let women join the military in your homeland if they want to, though. But at least your father and uncles were willing to teach you how to fight. I bet they're all very proud of you!"
Then she giggles a little, finding Ray's subtle shift in demeanor to be catching. "And you're right, there's no reason at all why you can't enjoy fighting and looking pretty, too! I don't really get much of a chance to dress up but maybe after this assignment I'll go shopping and find a nice dress or pair of shoes."
______
With Thomas
"Oh, okay," Fran nods. "Sort of like mercenary work then. It's always good to be able to make a little money so you can stay warm and safe and fed."
Then she tilts her head slightly, as an odd thought comes drifting up from the depths of her mind. "Do you enjoy your assignments? Could you go back home if you really wanted to?"
Shayna Therinor |
I mran, I understand the whole protective of women concept, and utseems so indoctrinated into the military....it's just that if a woman wants to defend her homeland, why can't she? It's not like she'll be wading into combat in full armor swinging a greatsword, but achers, light infantry...even cavalry can be suited towards women. Luckily, my family saw that I wasn't going to be denied and helped me. And my cousins have been abroad so long, they might not recognize me...Karlos and Doran I haven't seen for about 4 years or so...and the others are always travelling. Mykel will have kittens when he sees I have joined up. I made Papa swearto not tell him I joined.
Ramon 'Ray' Azure |
"Given my experiences, I'd have to say women and men are equally capable of strapping on heavy armor and marching into battle. I really don't see what the big point is, there? I mean, why discard good talent because the equipment isn't the way a couple of misguided folks think it's supposed to be? Heck, on the mission to Tian Xia a bit ago, we had two ass-kicking women on our team -- not counting myself because I'm in a variable category -- and one guy who was, to put it nicely... rather reluctant to engage the opponent."
Thomas Hasoshi |
"Oh, okay," Fran nods. "Sort of like mercenary work then. It's always good to be able to make a little money so you can stay warm and safe and fed."
Then she tilts her head slightly, as an odd thought comes drifting up from the depths of her mind. "Do you enjoy your assignments? Could you go back home if you really wanted to?"
*Likewise tilts head*
"Mmm, i'm more of a security and spying employee. Mercenaries are often not generally committed things other than money and contracts."
"Oh, i most definitely want to visit my homeland from time to time. The western continent still holds many new things for me to see, though."
Kriklishik |
To Fran:
"Yeah. It was weird. I was trying to understand the nature of these powers, and suddenly I could feel the fire. Not a burning sensation, but I could feel what it was like to burn, to hunger. To consume..."
Kriklishik's eyes defocus, his mind far away.
"Oh, my apologies. Anyway, it turns out that it was fire itself speaking. At least, that's what I imagine. I suppose it could be some horrid spirit masquerading, waiting to take over my body while I sleep, or something!"
Krik's eyes sparkle and a smile plays at the edges of his mouth. He looks down, and he notices that, at some point in his reverie, he'd stopped thinking about Flicker, and Flicker's physical form had dissipated into a wisp of gray smoke.
"But it hasn't yet. Ah, and it seems he's back inside."
Kineticists don't make good multiclass candidates, but it would be wicked fun to add a level or two of medium, just to play up the fire spirit thing.
GM Bret |
...swimming...
Swimming would work best around dawn or dusk. You could most likely do it just before your watch started if you wanted. It is best done when the ship is either searching for a place to tie up for the night or while the ship is tied up.
Leisure tasks: Vlazis makes a particular point of getting to know a different crew-member each day, and aside from that can usually be found curling up with a good book or The Good Book.
There are only the two crew, Captain Walren and Ewen.
Anytime someone tries to strike up a conversation with Ewen, he tells them in broken common that "Questions go captain." and points them towards Walren.
The captain seems like a very reasonable man to you, Vlazis. He isn't much for idle chit-chat, but it is plain he likes things orderly. You notice that everything on his ship has it's place and he is diligent about making sure things stay that way. He keeps a regular schedule, the two of them operating the boat together.
He does look a little nervous when Kriklishik practices with the fire, but since Kriklishik appears to have it under control the captain never orders him to stop.
---
The boat stays within sighting distance of the shore. During the day the captain and Ewen trade off duty at the helm. At dusk and dawn the two of them are quite busy making sure that the ship will be secure for the night or getting ready to get underway in the morning.
While working, the captain will frequently whistle a tune to himself. Although most dwarves aren't fond of water, Captain Walren appears to genuinely enjoy sailing.
The first night you tie up along the shore of a very small island, almost more of a sand bar really. Overnight the land gets covered with crabs, but they pose no threat to the boat.
The second day everything goes well, although the Captain does yell at Thomas a few times about staying away from certain areas in the masts and insists that Thomas never climb or otherwise manipulate certain ropes.
More incoming.
