Hello all!
GM, would you mind opening up the Gameplay thread when convenient so we can dot and make sure not to miss anything?
Kriklishik |
I can't recommend enough using IFTTT to follow this and the gameplay thread.
Also useful is AutoHotKey for quick formatting. When I get them set up for myself, I'll share what I have.
GM Bret |
@Vlazis

@Kriklishik
I hadn't heard of IFTTT before. Doing a quick search I found this service which I'm guessing is what you are talking about.
Other that provide some specialized applets, what does it do?
tchrman35 |
IFTTT stands for "if this then that". But the useful part is that one of their applets checks an RSS feed and emails you every time it's updated. The gameplay thread will have an RSS feed that's easy to find in the top right corner of the page.
Once I've got it set up, I'll get an email every time someone posts.
GM Bret |
Oh, I had heard of "If This Then That" but never investigated using it.
I think I would need another e-mail address just to handle the messages from the service.
grimdog73 |
hey...quick question...would you mind if i swapped out Conal for another character? wil still be a swashbuckler, just a female...and will have done crypt. the reason I ask is a gm is doing the 2nd and 3rd parts of the Gallows of madness...Conal did part 1 and I wouldnt mind doing the whole thing with the same toon...
GM Bret |
Go ahead, play Gallows on Conal! It is supposed to be a fantastic series and I'm not going to get in the way of you doing all three parts on the same character.
Have fun!
I'm glad you have another similar character to bring in. Too bad it isn't third level. I wouldn't mind if one of the second level characters managed to get to third before we started. I just think doing so requires they play VTT or face-to-face. I don't think there is enough time to do it via PbP.
Fran Belmont |
Alas, I don't think I'll have any good opportunities to do any F2F gaming with Fran before Gameday starts. We may just have to be a little more cautious about what we do as we progress through the module.
Fran Belmont |
Fran Belmont |
Yes but I think the GM said we'd be starting just a little bit later, on September 2nd/3rd. It should be somewhere in the recruitment thread :)

We will be starting soon, so I would appreciate it if everyone could look over their profile and make sure everything is in place.
Headers
Although I don't care that much about order, I would appreciate if everyone has their ACs (normal, flat-footed, touch), Current Hit Points / Total Hit Points, senses, CMD, and saving throws in their header.
If you want your character sheet to be someplace other than your profile, please include a link in your header so I don't have to go through a two step process to find the full stat block.
I don't care if you list Init in your headers, I will be collecting Init modifiers and botting the initiative rolls as GM.
Full Stat Blocks
In their profile somewhere please include a full stat block. Please do not spread it across multiple spoiler tags. I don't mind if you put the stat block under a spoiler, just don't make me expand multiple spoilers in order to find something from the stat block.
Botting
Some sort of botting instructions would be very helpful.
Thomas and She-Conal, since you have Swashbucklers, I would greatly appreciate it if you could include when you would use Opportune Parry/Riposte, Dodging Panache, or Charmed Life (if applicable).
Something like: Charmed Life: Use on any Fort save until I only have one left.
Initiative
Having had too many instances of GMs swarming PCs with a horde of NPCs, I roll each NPC initiative. We then do the normal ordering for initiative. I then separate it into blocks where party members between two NPCs can act in any order. This keeps the game moving.
If you want your action to happen after someone else's, please post but start with something like "After Thomas attacks, Fran will use her Whammy on Thug 2 (if still alive) or LBEG."
When there are too many interspersed NPCs in the initiative, I may elect to have one delay just to group them up.
When in combat, I plan to list everyone with those who are to act bolded.
As an example:
Initiative:
Fran, Thomas, Thug 1, Vlazis, She-Conal, Ramon, Thug 2, Little Bad Evil Guy, Krikislik
The above could happen if Fran, Thomas, Thug 1, and She-Conal had acted. More than likely, it is at the end of a post telling people the results of She-Conal's actions. We are still waiting for posts from Vlazis and Ramon before Thug 2 and the others can act.
As a GM, I work very hard to not give NPCs a hive-mind. I will have each act on their own based on their knowledge.
I am still unsure about the best way to list active buffs. I've seen a few different ways, but this being my first time GMing a PbP please be patient as I find what works for me.
If something I've written above causes you confusion or consternation, please let me know. I may be willing to adjust given reason.
Any questions?
Fran Belmont |
Headers - I think Fran and Mr. Sunshine both have all the relevant information in their headers.
Full Stat Blocks - Pretty sure the only spoilered information I've got is stuff relating for background, chronicles, and the like.
Botting - Need to do this; I'll try to get that taken care of shortly.
Initiative - Sounds fine to me!
______
No questions at the moment. I'm looking forward to getting started :)

Wildfire heart is where the other +4 comes from. From ARG.
Ifrits with this trait are as swift and dangerous as a blazing wildfire. They gain a +4 racial bonus on initiative checks. This racial trait replaces energy resistance.
I will try to find the box to check in HL.
Dex +3
Reactionary +2
Familiar +4
Wildfire Heart +4

Thanks! I had missed that. Guess it has just been too long since I created my Ifrit Swashbuckler.

They can get them via Wild Talents.
Kriklishik |
Ah, right, i forgot about the elemental whispers wild talent.
Elemental whispers is the ticket here. And as an overwhelming soul there's not a whole lot worth taking at level 2. And going first is never bad.
Kriklishik |
I'm always happy to attempt a roll for a knowledge check, even if I can only succeed at a DC10.

Duly noted.
Most of the time, it isn't a consideration.
GM Bret |
@Krikliskik & Fran,
Will Flicker and Mr. Sunshine be combat familiars, able to make skill rolls and such, or just a passive bonus?
I notice that Mr. Sunshine has an avatar already.
Kriklishik |
Combat? Noooo! I have to spend my standard concentrating to keep him manifested. But I have used him for reconnaissance before. I get an empathic link to him, so it's very limited.
Mostly I use him to show people. It's a circus act. And an initiative bonus. Honestly, I almost regret the initiative, when I could've had a hedgehog and a Will save bonus. But oh well. Alea Iacta Est!
GM Bret |
Guess I need to read up on kineticist familiars. I'm much more familiar with Wizard and Witch familiars.
If you want it to scout, that requires a skill roll.
Fran Belmont |
I like avatars for my familiars/ACs/eidolons because I like to try and role play them as well :)
Mr. Sunshine might scout sometimes but I don't plan to have him take an active role in combat at this time.
GM Bret |
On a more serious note, I like familiars. I do not go out of my way to muck with them.
The rules are pretty simple. If it can roll for anything, it is considered a combat creature. If it can't, you can still take the passive bonus. For witches it can be passive and you would still be able to get your spells.
Recon is a stealth roll.

Totally fine with that. I'm not worried about losing it, because if it takes any damage at all or is destroyed, it just pops back into my head.
Nevertheless, I'll get a character sheet ready for it and add it to my header.

Kineticist familiar text:
You form a friendship with a fragment of your element. The element speaks back to you empathically, like a familiar. Pick a type of creature usually allowed as a familiar when you gain this wild talent. You gain the Alertness feat and the special abilities granted by a familiar of that type. As a standard action, you can give the voice of the element the body of such a creature, using elemental matter of the appropriate element within 30 feet. As long as you concentrate, the familiar can take actions as a normal animal of its type, and it can move any distance away from you, though if it takes any damage or you cease concentrating, it returns to your mind. You lose Alertness while the familiar is manifested in this way. The familiar gains abilities as usual for a familiar of its type, though it never gains the ability to speak with animals of its kind.
The moment it takes any damage, it pops back into the head of the Kineticist. It is very unlikely you will be able to kill it, unless it's in a single blow.
Fran Belmont |
@GM - Thank you, that's good to know. While I certainly understand targeting familiars if they're an active and noticeable presence in combat and/or if you put them in potentially dangerous or odd situations ("Dude, check out the hawk flying around in here! Let's catch/shoot/eat it!"), sometimes I think some GMs go out of their way to target familiars when it doesn't make much sense.
At any rate, it's up to you - if you'd prefer to classify Mr. Sunshine as a combat critter since I might have him scout then that's fine; he can always (try) to run away if it comes down to combat!

Fire Blast, PBS, BI: 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 7 + 1 = 18
Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 2 + 1 = 9
Cast Defensively: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Reflex Save:DC 15 or catch fire
Burn Accumulated: 1
Gathered Power: 1
Net Burn Accepted: 0 (Must ALWAYS be zero.)
"Well, that seems to be working quite nicely." Kriklishik hops over the short wall...
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13...and lands on his face.
"Ouch! Well, THAT much isn't."
PS - Precise Shot
BI - Burning Infusion
ERI - Extended Range Infusion
I think I've tested just about all of it. I'm sure I'll find something else I need. And, for the record, I kinda like the GUI engine in AutoHotKey. Very cool!

I've posted the lead-in to the adventure.
The actual adventure starts when you board the boat.
Feel free to interact with each other as you arrive.
Patros Therinor |
Hey. I will be bringing in this characer instead of Shayna...there is an issue with the one chronicle, so I will bring in Patros, another of the Therinor clan...and yes, a rondelero as well...it's a family thing...lol...will have him lvled up in a few minutes...

I thought the chronicle was getting fixed?

well, just in case it doesn't get fixed by then....want to be ready just in case....so whatever happens, i'm ready to go with whichever one...
Grimdog, we all know about the chronicle issue. Bret is fine with letting you proceed while your chronicle is getting fixed, as am I. Play your original character. If the GM who issued you the chronicle is unable to get it fixed, then I or Magabeus will write it up.
We just wanted to give the original GM a change to repair it first. But no matter what, we'll make sure that you are taken care of!
