I see Wayfinder is available again. Makes my life a lot easier, thanks.

I am running a second level SoP caster in a game right now, and I'm really enjoying him so far. I'd like to get in another SoP game and try a different type as I'm a big fan of the system!
Ziebodug Bandmocken |
I will take a look. Based on what little I read, it sounds pretty cool.
Also, I am going to be travelling a bit this weekend. It is only supposed to be 24 hours, but there are expectations of ice storms which can certainly interfere with driving plans.
I will try to chime in, but access will be pretty limited while I am out.
GM Bold Strider |
@Zie: Thank you for the update as to your posting availability!
@Everyone: The SoP stuff is interesting. (Thanks for giving me another subsystem to look over!) Perhaps I will allow a rebuild into SoP for any caster levels (alchemist included). I'd need to understand the system better first, however.
@Zie, Again: I am currently playing in Jace's Giantslayer and we are about to wrap Book 4, I believe. It has definitely been a lot of fun and the straightforwardness of it is quite nice actually.
Elena Lovain |
Wow, done with 4 books? That's impressive! Congrats to the both of you on that accomplishment.
Jace Devak |
Yup, we are currently on the BBEG of Book 4 and getting ready to transition into Book 5. All PbP of course.
Giantslayer is definitely a blast, though some of those giants get scary with the amount of damage they dish out.
Rajendra Sastri |
As the GM may remember, I was in Endless Forms' Shattered Star PbP, and we finished in a little over three years. (It would have been sooner, but we lost Tektite and Mark Garringer late in the game--too late to replace the characters.)
Elena Lovain |
The only AP I've finished via PBP was a nicely abbreviated version of Curse of the Crimson Throne. The DM did a wonderful job of hitting the high points and forwarding us through some of the background stuff. That was a great experience!
If anyone wants to start a new AP, keep me in mind, lol. We've got finishers here!
Rajendra Sastri |
Thanks for the game, GM Bold! I admit, for the most part I have been in PFS mode because it fits my schedule, but I have quite enjoyed being part of a longer storyline. It is a much different feel, and has been a lot of fun!
In fact, it has inspired me to start planning to run my own AP (probably not until after this Blood under Absalom special). I was thinking Giantslayer...
I see you've got the usual mob of signups for the game. I would have, but my work situation just got a little weird and I don't know how much time I'm going to have to spare. Good luck!

When I posted earlier about more involved posts, I was trying to encourage more posts that detail actual movement or active engagement. Posts like Jace's most recent allow me to add to the story and move the action along as he has posted an action (moving through the crowd and finding a local to speak to).
Posts that are essentially "Hey, what should we do guys?" or "Sure." give me literally nothing to work with. At a tabletop, these are fine, but PbP bogs down severely if everyone waits for a consensus on something. This is a good example. We've spent over a week on seeing if you guys are actually going to enter the townhouse while both of the people are out. In the end, you didn't even enter.
If you want to go back to the inn and sleep, then post something that says. "I head back to the inn, bursting through the door in a ball of frazzled energy from the late night. A turnip spills from my bag and I quickly follow after it, bumping into a few people, but find myself next to the barkeep. "Can I get a room for the night, please?" I ask as I hold onto my slippery tuber."
If you want to break in to the townhouse, then you need to make a post that actually states what you are doing. Making a post that says "Oh, should we break in?" is aggravating from a GM standpoint as I literally can't do anything with that beyond type stuff like "The people are looking at the group of well-armed adventurers standing around in a nobleman's courtyard, seemingly loitering since they are doing nothing."
Thoughts on my thoughts? Concerns? Comments?

Yah, I get the frustration. This medium is pretty slow for times when the group doesn't know what to do. The questions Zie poses are really meant for the GM, but for other players to try to reach a consensus.
I had thought we were going to speak to local law enforcement next, but then the fatigue checks started and it seems we need to regroup.
My suggestion would be that we get rooms, get some rest, then go talk to local law, and then try back at the residence - knocking first, but failing that, entering. So the visit should take place at night.
Jim Seeker |
I agree that the toughest moments for a PbP are when the party doesn't know what to do. We're reduced to a paladin pondering the act of breaking and entering.
But for what it's worth, I believe Jace has the key, so he'd be the one to actually open the door if that's our chosen path.

Yep, when we are unsure what to do that bogs a PBP game down. Someone needs to take the lead and be decisive, but honestly I'm not sure what the best action is, so I've been hoping someone would decide for me.

+1 to this
Pushing is a big one with PbP. Even if we are all going in separate directions we can easily link back up to a single plan. My characters constantly make bad decisions in PbP's but at least it pushes the story onward.
Rajendra Sastri |
As others have said, it's difficult when there's no clear indication of a path forward and none of us have talents or abilities that would make it easier. PbP as a format is at its best when the potential action space is fairly bounded, and in this particular case--when none of us have a good idea of what to do--we all slow down in posting and wait for someone else to come up with something. I also completely missed the time, which didn't help; I thought that Aldern had left sometime during the night, and was taken a bit aback when I realized that it was daytime. This drove a lot of the walking-back, at least on my part. A little B&E at night is one thing, but midday robbery is quite another. There is also some frustration driving that; I don't know what to do, so the thought of taking action--even an action profoundly antithetical to my character's ethos--was attractive.
And tbh I've had a lot of stuff happening in RL (looking at a major shift in job duties at work, and management has seriously screwed up the implementation), and have been prioritizing the games I run plus the shorter-duration games I'm playing in (figuring if I can get them out of the way I'll have more time for the long-haul games).

In a few other games, I am addressing my own lack of desire to long on and GM, however I am wrapping up several games soon and I am prematurely ending some others. I want to keep this game and this group running and I think this step is necessary for that.
If we can keep a good pace on posting, then I think we can be successful, so I just want to encourage good posting habits and rates.

Sounds good to me! I'm having a blast when I'm not ghoul fevered and dying!

For future reference, there's stuff I can do to pre-buff for a fight. If you have the option, waiting until I have done so will be better for me, and thus for everyone.
I'm not complaining, just pointing out.

Big Update: Hey guys. I have been slacking in relation to this game (and all of my games in general). Honestly, I am just not that interested in PbP anymore. I'm going to cut some of my long term games and quickly finish out the rest.
I know that some of you recently joined the game and I'm sorry that this is coming around now, but I'm just not enjoying it anymore so it is increasingly easier for me to just not log on and do anything.
This is one of the games that I am cutting and I just want to thank all of you for your time. I am sorry for the way that this is ending, but I'd rather cut it off then slog through.
Sincerely,
GM BS

Indeed, it's been fun. I'll miss these characters.

Yeah, if it's not fun you shouldn't be doing it. I had the feeling we were getting off the rails, there, which probably didn't help. Thanks for sticking it out as long as you did. I'll probably see the rest of you around the boards.
Elena Lovain |
Thanks for the running, DM. I had a great time!
