The ettin was enraged, and it completely ignored Molly's evil eye and Sander's hissing bomb as it continued to spin the heavy flails independently. Arrows skipped off its unnaturally armored flesh as both Storn and Chwaer landed blows. One arm flailed at Chwaer, who dodged around the left ankle, while the other swung sideways to smash Storn in the chest.

The bag functions like a tanglefoot bag, plus a direct hit on a creature deals 1d6 points of fire damage, and the creature must make a DC 20 Reflex save or catch on fire. If it catches on fire, for the next 2 rounds extinguishing the flames is a DC 25 Reflex save instead of a DC 15 save, and using water to extinguish the flames creates a burst of burning material equivalent to alchemist’s fire making a direct hit on the target (including splash damage). After the initial 2 rounds, the flames may be extinguished as normal.

One of Quill's arrows struck the giant square, while the other two simply hung in the enormous ettin's tough hide. Sander's bag exploded on the giant covering it in fiery goo that immediately hardened. From behind one of the giant's legs he heard a yelp as Chwaer was hit with the goo as well. Storn jabbed the ettin repeatedly, tearing great gouges in its belly with the jagged spear he carried. The ettin's roars of fury wound down into gasps of pain, then the panting of the dying as Storn shook blood and viscera from his weapon. Chwaer, not one to let any giant get the best of her, made sure of the dying ettin by planting an axe blow into the back of each of its heads.

A quick search of the body finds nothing of interest, other than the enormous anvil flails, and those are more of a curiosity than anything actually worth money. You'd have to be as strong as...well, as a giant to even swing one.

There are two ways out of this room, other than the one you came in. Doors to the north appear to open into the next room on this level, while stairs to the west appear to lead up into the cathedral's central spire. There was also the well, but given that the ettin appears to have been using it as a privy, you probably don't want to go down there if you don't have to.

Quill loots the body and looks around while others heal up.

”Sander, does this count as 1 or 2 giants? It’s a giant, right? Probably should count as just 1, but it might be two. I don’t really know this kind of stuff,” Quill whispers.

Quill declines to head down the privy, as he’s already been covered in giant s%~! once and has no need to experience that again.

”C’mon, this way,” He moves to the north door and waits for others to be ready to open it.

"Just one," Sander replies. "If you have a tree with multiple leaves, that's still just a single tree, right? Think of it like that..."

Sander looks up toward the stairs, thinking that's probably the better way to go, but proud of Quill actually being assertive, he decides to follow the elf's lead. Or at least let Chwaer do so.

Let's assume we heal up too, of course, before we move on.

Storn beams and cleans off his spear before trying to mold his collarbone back into shape with a lot of pressure from his cure light wounds wand. "Good fight! See? We see if there's an ally and if not, we kill him. This is Gorum's way."

Mostly healed, he tromps over to the north door. "You listen. I kick. Chwaer goes in first. She's a little faster than I am. Ready?"


Storn kicked the door in and Chwaer prepared to leap inside...only to find no immediate threat.

A huge stone bench carved with strings of runes runs along the circumference of this circular chamber. A narrow ledge along the back of the bench holds several dozen stone busts of stern-looking giants. To the southeast, a high-backed granite throne sits atop small platform overlooking the room. To the west and northwest, six tall stained-glass windows covered with iron grates line the wall. The glass is nearly opaque from centuries of dusty mountain winds. Numerous panes have cracked or blown out completely; the holes have been sloppily patched with wads of clay and dung.

A number of tree trunks are propped against the bench above large piles of wood shavings—each is in the process of being reshaped and bound into an iron banded club. Open crates packed with tools, rope, wood, chunks of coal and iron ore, and other objects are piled everywhere throughout the room. Dozens of broken or rusted weapons and shields have been haphazardly thrown into a scrap pile nearby. Near the throne, several human corpses have been stacked liked cordwood.

"Those must be your friends, Chwaer" Sander says softly, pulling a cloth over his nose in case the stench gets as bad as she mentioned earlier.

He looks around for any sign of a threat.

"I still think up makes more sense," he says.

Quill moves into the room and to the left (BB11), keeping his bow ready as the others move in to scout the room.

”Looks like someone sits there and shaves clubs,” Quill offers an insight. ”I’m not sure I want to meet that giant.”

Looking more closely - yuck! - Chwaer can easily see that these are not her companions. In fact, they all appear to be wearing the same clothing, a tabard with a white tree on a field of green.

K. Nobility or Geography DC 10:

This is the symbol of the nearby kingdom of Nirmithas, and the bodies are likely those of a border patrol.

If you guys would like to search the bodies or the crates, let me know. It will be a long process to clear everything. If you do decide to search, let me know how many minutes you will take doing it, and roll a Perception check for the entire time spent (No Taking 20). Needless to say, the more time you spend searching, the more likely you are to get caught.

Sander shakes his head.

"We don't have time to look around right now," he says, "though maybe we should see if those poor people have anything useful on them?"

I think a quick detect magic on the bodies. Then let's move on and hopefully come back here. I still think going up makes more sense, but will do whatever majority rules.

Per the rules, peeps, you can make untrained knowledge rolls for DCs at 10 or lower.

”I think Sander and Chwaer are right, we should move on. Maybe we’ll have time later to examine this...assuming our bodies aren’t added to that stack of the dead and all.”

Quill waits to move on, happy to follow others into the next room.

Sander doesn't bother to look at the bodies that closely, since A) it's sad, and B) they're in a rush, so it's irrelevant whether he knows Nirmathas' symbol or not.

Storn looks around, tempted to give the place a thorough going-over but only so tempted. "Let's take a few minutes. You only loot once."

Since you were in a hurry, only the pile of bodies was investigated. There was only a single magic item left among the eight soldiers, a set of scale mail enchanted to deflect giant-delivered attacks.

Beyond the next door was an anteroom of sorts, with another set of double doors leading to the next area. Through those door scame the sounds of boisterous voices and the sounds of breaking pottery and smashing wood. Chwaer edged the doors open to see what looked to be an enormous feasting hall. Tables the size of rafts filled the room, loaded with greasy piles of chipped wooden bowls of congealed stew, piles of bruised apples and scorched root vegetables, dirty iron cutlery, and the cracked bones of half-eaten meat shanks. The floors are equally filthy and are littered with rotting straw, food scraps, and puddles of slop. In huge recesses along the outer walls, iron cauldrons suspended by thick chains simmer above blazing fires in massive hearths of soot-blackened stone. Three huge hogsheads stand against the western wall. The hall is uncomfortably hot and reeks of sweat, fetid stew, and stale beer. Rats skirt the room’s fringes, greedily darting from shadow to shadow.

Two ogres and three giants - one of them with blue skin that looked like she might be a frost giant - celebrated here, knocking back food and drink, and occasionally throwing something.

Oh man, that’s armor that Quill could wear, but happy to offer it to others first.

”I wish he had some brave heroes who were good at killing giants about now,” Quill whispers wistfully under his breath as he sees the array of giant kind in the room. ”But it looks like someone needs to kill them, might as well be us instead.”

Quill waits for others to get into positions and make preparations before this big ass battle, setting his own bow to crackle with green electricity.

Once they get to the dor, Storn peers in with the group and ducks back.

"Make them come to us, use the door as a choke. Chwaer and I can be the meat grinders. Get the blue one first."

Also, are we fully healed?

Once everyone else is ready, Sander lights and stealthily tosses in his last orc bomb, aiming at a spot where it could hopefully catch more than one of the giants.

Unerring grenade (ranged touch): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13 wah-wah...

I had been aiming at let's say Y-44, so there's a chance it could still catch someone in some splash...
Miss direction (20 ft.): 1d8 ⇒ 4 So that lands to the north; I'm assuming it's a 10-foot increment, so W-44, and still might catch the red giant in the splash, which I think would be 2 bludgeoning, 1 fire, DC 15 Reflex save for half. Of course, if they notice it bouncing in there, they might all cluster around it to see what it is and catch more people...

Everyone readied themselves for battle, then Sander threw in the grenade. It bounced on the filthy floor, rolling to a stop between two of the tables. The general revelry caused the grenade to go unnoticed, at least until it exploded. The giants all looked around, quickly focusing on the wide open doors where Quill was standing, bow at the ready.

Quill can make his surprise round attacks now, then we go into init

Quill managed to get off a pair of arrows into one of the ogres, killing it, before Sander readied his bombs to throw. The frost giant reached into a sack sitting on the table and pulled out a rock the size of Storn's head. She hurled it into the doorway, and the rock slammed into Quill, nearly knocking the trembling elf over.

Chwaer takes a quick look at the room and realizes she won't make it all the way in there to actually hit anything. Instead she darts forward and hides by the corner of the table, let them come here and I can sneak in behind when Storn uses that spear of his.

Quill's first two arrows leveled the charging ogre, and the third injured the closest hill giant. The frost giant shouted something, and the hill giant ducked low, evading Molly's shot, then straightened, flipping the table up on end and creating a wooden bulwark that shielded it from Quill's arrows. He and the other hill giant used the table as a sort of mantlet, lobbing rocks into the crowded doorway and ducking behind the cover of the table. Quill is hit again, and he feels a couple of ribs break at the impact.

Realizing they have no need to come toward the group, Sander moves into the room next to Chwaer, using the other side of the table as his own cover. Move to AC-30

Mental note to self: Do not post when tired or headachy. I just spent 5 minutes poring over Sander's character sheet trying to figure out how he got his AC to 30 while moving.

GM screen:

Sander scurried forward, using the table for as much cover as he could, slamming his back to it as he planned on which bombs to toss over the barrier. The giantess grabbed another rock from her bag, hurling it at Quill once more as she slid into cover behind the thick oaken barrier. Once again the air was blasted from the archer's chest as the rock slammed home. He was certain that he had broken ribs now. And possible a punctured lung if they didn't finish this fight off fast.

What kind of cover are the giants getting from the table? Want to decide what Quill can see. Also, last rock misses due to Quill’s new scale armor...in fact, it defiantly misses. He will still gladly accep Molly’s healing.

If I understand the map correctly, the table is acting like a wall so should provide cover while I double move to AC41?

OK. Mind updating your banner, then? That's what I go by for quick judgments.

As for cover, they are getting Cover (+4 to AC) as per the Low Obstacles and Cover rules. Think of the cover you could get by tipping over a standard picnic table. It goes up to their midriff area, and they can crouch behind it.
