Hrrm. All of them sound fun (although it's hard to go wrong in Pathfinder, imo), but it's really up to you. Two notes, though;
First, whatever you pick, it would be good if you train Survival (as I think that we lack it, I'm not sure if I can squeeze it in on my cleric, and it has been highly recommended by the DM).
Second, unless you go small-sized, this is one of the few campaigns where a cavalier is actually a viable option, at least from what I've seen. If you wanted to be a tracking cavalier (possibly from boar hunting in your youth or somesuch), then the Caravan Guard trait from Jade Regent makes it a class skill.
Again though, play what you think would be fun. A druid could provide some fun RP (since I'm going Cleric of Abadar), but they all sound good to me. Methinks that someone wants an animal companion, though. :P
Edit: GM ninja'd.
GM Aria |
Your fighter has survival. And yeah... I'm not certain how big of a deal I will be making of it. Some monsters you will need to track, as I recall, but as far as breaking camp and what not, you're all experienced players, I assume at least one or two of you have gone camping at some point in your careers as fledgling heroes and know better than to urinate and defecate into your water source, or camp right next to the animals you just killed. For that sorta stuff it is not going to be an issue.
Really looking forward to the fey encounters if you make a druid, though. *rubs hands together* heh. heh heh. heh. hooo.
GM Aria |
Ah, I should let ya'll know that hubby runs a campaign that precedes Kingmaker by a few years for me to play in, and maybe a few characters from there might show up in this game. I haven't quite decided yet, but ya'll wanted female NPCs, and we got... bunches. Ha. Ha. If my poor hippy cleric gets picked up elsewhere, all the better for you guys :P
Also have my original cleric for my kingmaker campaign floating around somewhere... suffice to say, I'm gonna have no problems coming up with new and exciting NPCs to throw themselves at cha, I mean...
GM Aria |
Well, just off the top of my head, if I was an intelligent villain who wanted to cull a party's effectiveness, I'd maybe, probably, advance some manner of charismatic caster to bewitch the party fighter. Everyone knows the tank's will save is garbage.
In other more pertinent news... uh...
Darn, had something to say. Oh yeah. I'm not a jerk with miserly bovine feces like rations, and encumbrance, unless it's ridiculous like the Wizard carrying the fighter on his back or something. If you got someone with a bow and the survival skill, and unless it's a blizzard out out in the middle of February, I am going to assume that you can hunt enough food to sustain yourselves. If it's dark out, I am going to assume that those of you who can do so will cast light spells so that you can see things. You all should know how to light and keep a campfire from burning your camp down in the middle of the night, etc etc.
And it's been over six hours and not a single person has responded to my former GM's call for a new cleric. Ha ha ha. I feel... vindicated.

Anyone getting a Full Metal vibe here?
I've decided, while I like the hawk idea, and will very likely use Eldritch Heritage to get a familiar hawk or something cool, I'm instead going with a character based on my second favorite well dressed time traveller. James Hereca is a half elven inquisitor of Calistria. His attitudes towards sex and love are... loose at best. He will be charming his way into the hearts of the women, men, and things of the Stolen Lands with his leather greatcoat swirling about him as he pursues the Whip Mastery feats.
10 pts if you can guess which character he's based off.
Also Aria, what's your stance on firearms? I'm a big fan as an opening weapon and I'd like to take black powder inquisition from UC if you're ok with it.
EDIT: Also going with the Heretic Archetype... bonuses to bluff and stealth in place of Solo tactics? Yes please.
GM Aria |
I think if you make an inquisitor of Calistria, you're asking me to include some of me and hubby's PCs and NPCs into the mix. Hehehe. Did I mention I run a bard of Calistria? I'm very familiar with how Calistria works at this point.
What do I feel about firearms? Eh, I mean, we got a wizard, that's... well.
I'll open it up to your companions decide. If you guys think it will break immersion for your game, I'll let you decide.
James Herecea |
Oh I giggle like a loon here far too much for it to worry her anymore. I might go with something like Tam's suggestion... at least just a crossbow to close. Maybe... I dunno. It's still pretty up in the air.
And oohhh... someone's into a little pain... I can roll with that. And I do have this whip here.
NOTE: I won't be doing this quite so bad in the game. He's not a charicature, and I intend him to be an adventurer first, a leader second and an omnisexual love machine somewhere third or after.
GM Aria |
No worries. If I am wrong in my assumption that we're not all mature adults here, I would rather not be informed of it. As I said, I'm looking for heroes, not sexual predators. That isn't the game I envision running. Not all Calistrians are soulless siphons of lust. My characters are never one dimensional, and I do mean to engage you if I set you up with something. Is why I am asking for good histories for me to work with.
James Herecea |
Quick Rulesy Question: I'd really like to take a vermin themed version of the Animal Domain, especially the Feather Subdomain. That would allow me to get a bonus on perception, fly checks and at 4th, an animal companion (I'm thinking the giant wasp from Ultimate Magic would be appropriate.) Would you be ok with this? I'm fine if not but I'm not liking the Domains that Calistria gives very much. I'll bite the bullet for the character concept if I must... but this seems cool to me.
GM Aria |
Uhh... lemme research what you're talking about and get back to you.
Edit @ Tam, I'd like a little more. Think like what we did for Ryuko. Give me half page at least, and some plot hooks I can work in later. Or I might just nab his questions... or others.

Okay, if I am reading this correctly, your inquisitor wants to take the Animal (Feather) Subdomain, giving you... essentially make you better at seeing stuff, quicker to react and a giant wasp following you around at level 4? (sometimes I repeat stuff to type it so that I can read it back so it makes sense to me, don't mind me)
Sure, why the heck not? Fighter's don't have perception, clerics don't, wizards don't. I actually have to investigate what Tam's archetype is making him give up.
GM Aria |
Woo hoo, finished my studies. Time for some mother lovin' ManOwaR!!
And I'll be putting up a list of questions I'd like for you guys to answer for me before we begin play by the end of the night. Just to give me a better idea. I'll try to keep it under 30. OOOOOOr, conversely, you can give me a good backstory and not answer the question...
Up to you. :P
Make it a great game or not... the choice is yours.
Edit: @ Tam, thanks. I figure she was just perfect for being a female GM's avatar :P

My wizard has perception. Eyes and Ears of The City trait, coupled with Alertness from familiar leaves me at +7. Because a surprised wizard tends to be a dead wizard. Worth a trait ^^
Also, if he is going "Knife Master" he gives up trapfinding (the ability to find magical ones and the bonus to perception & disable device) and trap sense. Also, his sneak attack is Xd8 with daggers, but Xd4 with everything else.
Stanislaw Quill |
But you do get my point that it is hardly game breaking for him to have better perception as opposed to the charm, or trickery domains, right? I gotta agree with him that Calistria's domains are pretty rectal.
Luck is a downright amazing domain. Trickery is not bad either, as you get more class skills, and as an inquisitor, the points to back it up (but I think there is some overlap). But hey, if it works, and it is thematically correct with the deity, I say more power to ya.
And having a flying critter as companion is going to be quite useful, if my memory serves. Grab the Boon Companion feat at lv5 to make it as kick-ass as a proper druid companion, and things might well get interesting.

lol trying to coordinate with brother on the questions and family background
EDIT: NOOOOO paizo ate my profile worked so hard on background and appearance poop.
oh aria can I make an adaptation to the equipment wrist sheath and make it an ankle sheath? I cant get boot knife cause its martial weapon >:( grrrrr but makes sense to have least one knife strapped to his ankle
Stanislaw Quill |
Aria told me there was some complaints about Stanis being optimized.
First off: Tell ME that.
Second: No. He is not. Sure, his int is 20, and his str is 7 (a flaw I am owning, as he doesn't even carry a crossbow, and have been limited to adhere to), but that is where it ends. He is a universalist, meaning fewer spells, and fewer powers. A true optimizer plays a diviner, conjurer or illusionist. He has taken traits and skills (diplomacy, perception and sense motive) that base themselves off "dump" stats. He has a familiar (that gives a skill bonus, not a save or initiative bonus) rather than a bonded item, which would give far more power. And finally, the feat selection down the road is going to make it even clearer, as the bulk of my feats will be crafting feats to make sure the party is equipped.
In short, I have seen far worse, and could do far worse, if I was thus inclined. If people still are not convinced, I can alter him so his Int is 19, and his str is his only negative.
GM Aria |
Lemme think about it. So far as I see, it's a spring loaded wrist sheath, just... on your foot. I really don't see what makes it martial. It still has normal dagger damage, except for just piercing.
I'm inclined to let you just take it as simple, since all that is required is the triggering mechanism, which you would have on the wrist sheath as a move/free action anyways even if you weren't proficient with it.
Stanislaw Quill |
First off Stanis, i dont play wizards a martial lover rule. so im confused. idk if Universalist gives u scribe scroll as a free feat, otherwise u have 3 starting feats.
All wizards have Scribe Scroll as a bonus feat. I am playing an archetype that gives up the level 1 class power (Hand of the Apprentice, a power to smack people in the face with telekinesis) for a crafting feat at level 3. So I can make matching cloaks for everyone :P

Anyone else have issues picking avatars here? Anyways, here's a link to the profile I'll be using for my priest; everything is still very much a work in progress. Stannis, for some reason you inclined me toward a Polish name. Not sure why, but it seems Brevoyan (or proper adjective) to me now.
Also, quick question on that last post, Stannis (with the note that this is out of curiosity, not a question/comment on your build in any way, shape, or form--ah disclaimers, part of the joy of trying to communicate tone of voice effectively via messageboard), are bonded objects seen as the better option for min/maxing a wizard? Admittedly, my knowledge on the subject is mainly from skimming Treantmonk's guide when I was building one of my own, but I thought that Familiars were generally seen as more useful.
Anywho, a quick note on my build; the Charisma is slightly lower than I might like, but methinks that the Trade subdomain should more than make up for that in the long run.
Edit: Triple-ninja'd. Clearly, I take too long to type my posts. Ah well. *glances at universalist wizard* Oh, that's a cool archetype--didn't notice it before.

Avatars are a mess. You have to page through like a dozen pages of silly monsters before character portraits come up ~_~
Treantmonk's idea of familiar>bonded item is based off the notion that you can lose your item and be ham-stringed. Easily solved by getting a ring instead of a staff, wand or other bulky implement. And some familiars are more min/max than others. Like the dinosaur that gives you +4 to initiative, or the ones that give +2 to a saving throw. Also, improved familiar allows you to get more actions and options.
So I guess I should further qualify that I took a "bad" familiar instead of bonded item. Which would allow me to cast one more spell per day, freely from my spellbook. Which I am sure anyone can appreciate how insanely powerful it can be when we are level 8+ and I have like 50 spells to chose from, and can stick any metamagic I want on it as well, due to the lv8 power of the universalist.
Ryuko |
Note to Ladislaus: Bonded item is very superior. Able to be enchanted without the feat, ability to spontaneously cast one spell. Really the only downside is that if it is destroyed it's much worse penalties. The only way a familiar is really optimized is if the caster goes the "Hands, Wand, UMD" route to make them into mini-casters, which he doesn't seem to be doing.
I don't feel you're min-maxed Stanis, though I admit Universalist seems the min-maxer's dream unless he's summoning tons. I think your guy is fairly flavorful... or... erm... actually... intentionally bland? Either way, I like him.
EDIT: Ninja'd
GM Aria |
All right, Gentlemen. I have exceeded the two yawns in under a minute threshold, and as such, I will be signing off for the morning.
@ Ladislaus uhh... charisma is just channeling to harm DC. I wouldn't worry too much about it for now. There's feats and magic items that can help you out with that later on, if you feel deficient.
riight, super drowsy all of a sudden.
This old woman is going to bed.
Ladislaus Veil |
Whoa, refresh and all of a sudden there are three responses. Good stuff.
Thanks for the correction on that, Stannis and Ryuko. Maybe I'll actually look into the bonded items at some point when next I make a wizard instead of just going with the familiar (even though they're so entertaining to have).
@Aria: G'night. The comment on Charisma was more about me being able to be a viable party face; I'm not too worried Channel DCs right now. 14 is certainly respectable at this level (hell, it's more than most of my characters have if they don't cast spells on it), but I wanted to note that I had a long-term solution for our social needs. Free bonus to Bluff, Diplomacy, and Sense Motive? Yes please. Besides, it seems more Abadaran than the Travel domain on its own.
Edit: Also, this might be useful for those who like maps and are planning a background in Brevoy: Map of Brevoy.
