Balooo confirms what the party had already been told about the Gallows - that they're used by the Besmaran church to execute heretics and religious malefactors.

Ushakas and Melina recall specific details about the late Captain Rahil. It seems Captain Rahil was originally from the land of Rahadoum and took that nation’s atheism to an extreme after entering into piracy, vehemently hating all gods, priests, and religions. During his piratical career, Rahil made sure to murder every priest on the ships he captured and destroy any religious items he came across. This included priests of Besmara, a policy that eventually led to his crew turning on him and delivering him to a Besmaran temple. The temple priests hung him from an arch in Blackwarn’s Gallows, and made it known that no one should try to recover his body.

Zink has never been much of a student of history, and he's certainly never been a sailor, but he's interested to hear what Ushaka and Melina have to say about Captain Rahil.

Speaking quietly, lest he be overheard by real pirates, he says, "Well, I've no particular wish to pick a fight with any faith, but if I have to do so, the Besmarans wouldn't be last on my list, rambunctious lot that they are. Shall we see what we can find?"

"The religious types seem to always throw curses on their dead. I'd expect his corpse to rise up and fight us, whether there are any guardians of Besmara there or not."

"We don't need the whole body", the Captain adds overhearing the party's chatter. "Just his peg leg and what's inside. Besides, I wouldn't worry overmuch. It isn’t grave robbing because there's no grave, it isn’t theft because there's no one to claim his effects, and it isn’t even looting the body since the peg leg isn’t really part of his body. So there's nothing to worry about!"

Once the teams are prepared, the crew loads into launches and rows toward the rocky shoreline. The first members of the crew to reach the shore quickly confirm Rahil's body isn't among the bodies hanging from the arch. The teams split up to search their assigned caves.

Venturing into their assignment, the party finds that these caves are surprisingly deep. The cavern ends at a huge pool of water. A headless partially eaten body sporting a sturdy peg leg and wrapped in chains lies at the edge of the water.

Seeing the partially eaten body by the edge of the water, Zink slips his bow off his shoulder and goes to take a slightly closer look. "I wonder just how many peg legs there are on this island? Do we know if Rahil's had any distinguishing features, aside from what's inside it?"
