Exploring the Savage World of Keltica

Game Master ZenFox42

A Savage Worlds campaign in a fantasy setting (Elves, Dwarves, magic, etc.) with pre-Civil War technology (steam engines, locomotives, but only single-shot guns and no electricity).

CURRENT MAP

Connor, frozen in place as he watched what was going on around him, is jolted back to reality by Marko's shouted plea. His eyes fall on K'Don, and he starts to move uncertainly towards him... then he stops next to Alex as the other orcs register.

"Mister Marko! I can't help until I can get to him!"

Frustrated and frightened, he balls his hands into tight fists and begins shaking uncontrollably. Suddenly, he loses control and screams in fear.

Psionic Scream & Wild => B (the immediate threat to Uncle Alex, naturally!): 1d8 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 5 => 6, Success
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 4) = 9

PP 15/15 | Bennies 3/3 | Venom Strike 1/1

The environment's important to WindDancer's abilities. What's the floor/ground like here? Any sand, pebbles, etc? Is it earthen?

The ground is earthen, with maybe some loose dirt, but it's been well-packed by people constantly walking over it (loading and unloading the flyer). Off the top of my head, how about -2 to damage/effect? Feel free to counter-offer...

Trying something new that we discussed before...

Orc A attacks Arabella :

Spoiler:
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 2 = 2 vs. Parry=4

And misses wildly

Orc B attacks Alex :

Spoiler:
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 41d6 ⇒ 2 = 4 vs. Parry=7

And also misses

Orc D attacks Katana :

Spoiler:
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 4 = 4 +1(gangup) = 5 vs. Parry 6

And misses as well!

Orc F attacks Marko :

Spoiler:
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 4
Explode: 1d8 ⇒ 5 = 13 vs. Parry=4 is 2 Raises
Damage: 2d10 + 1d6 ⇒ (2, 7) + (3) = 12 vs. Toughness=4 is 2 Raises

And lands a solid blow to Marko's chest, delivering 2 Wounds
Marko, since you have 4 Bennies (I think), I would suggest you try to Soak some of that...

ALL - please post comments in Discussion as to how you like this format. Since I saved the spoiler commands for last, it's not hard at all.

Drat - Katana acted before the Orcs, attacking Orc D :

Spoiler:
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 81d6 ⇒ 4
Explode: 1d8 ⇒ 3 = 11 vs. Parry=6 is a Raise
Damage: 1d8 + 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (6) + (4) + 2 = 12
Explode: 1d4 ⇒ 2 = 14 vs. Toughness=8 is a Raise, so a Wound!

And Orc D drops before he had a chance to attack her (whew! - no retcon needed).

After Orc B acted, Connor's scream makes him Shaken.

Marko, Alex, and WindDancer are up.

(Marko is Shaken as well, he'll have to roll to recover from that first, unless you manage to Soak ALL his Wounds.)

I have mixed feeling about the Spoiler. On one hand, I like the "Story Flow" better this way. On the other hand, I like to see it to learn the system better (yes, I know, I can open them).

Male Human Wizard

Vigor: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 5

5 vs 4 Looks like a success

Each Success and Raise removes 1 Wound, so you take only one Wound, and are still Shaken. Roll to recover from Shaken before you can act.

You're down 1 Benny.

I've no clue how that could be applied to what I was thinking, so she'll do something else instead.

She senses Con-nor's panic and increases her pace, rocketing down the corridor towards the skirmish. As soon as she sees the situation -- including two big-bigs near her little-big, one of them attacking Con-nor's big -- she twists her wings and snaps her tail. With a sharp chirp of pain she is suddenly diving directly at the ground and...

Spellcasting & Wild (Mud Melt): 1d8 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 5 => 5, Success. Whew!

... plunges into it, vanishing from sight. For a few moments the ground ripples sluggishly, the rings expanding from where she disappeared from view.

Next!

That was Awesome, Visions of Wyle E. Coyote and miscasting the spell!!!
What spell is Mud Melt.

Waiting for Marko and Alex...
Marko must roll first to recover from Shaken, and will be at -1 to all rolls (except damage).

Sorry, I lost track of where in the round we were. I quite liked the summaries.

Seeing his chance to press the offense against the shaken and wounded orc he faced, Alexander stepped forth to jab and poke at the brute. "It's all right, Connor! You're doing a great job! Stay with Master Montalvo!"

rapier+gang up+shaken: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3 Hope I got that right...
wild: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3

Uh oh... Benny time?

rapier+gang up+shaken: 1d8 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 + 1 = 8
wild: 1d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 = 3

possible damage: 1d4 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (6) = 7
explode: 1d6 ⇒ 2 = 9 damage

2 Bennies left

Male Human Wizard

I'm a bit confused, sorry, but what was the above Vigor roll for if not for Shaken?

Male Human Wizard

I'll assume Marko gets another roll against vigor

Vigor: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 2

OK then...

Ok, I guess we pretty much have to keep the in-the-battle this-is-how-the-system-works comments here in Gameplay, putting them in Discussion would make it easy for them to get out-of-sync...

Alex -
-Technically, Orc B was just Shaken, not "shaken and wounded" (maybe you said that for flavor, but I just want to be clear).
-You do get a +1 for gangup from Katana, but not a +1 because the target is Shaken (unless that second +1 came from somewhere else?). So your attack roll was a 7, which still gets past his Parry.
-And 9 damage is enough to make him Shaken, and since he's already Shaken he takes a Wound, and since he's an Extra he drops.

Marko -
-I had suggested you make a Soak roll to remove some of the Wounds, which is a Vigor roll. So I thought that's what you were doing.
-Regarding your recover-from-Shaken Vigor roll (the post just previous to this one), you're at -1 to ALL rolls (except damage) because of the Wound, so your roll is a 3, and you're still Shaken.
-However, you can spend a Benny at any time to *automatically* recover from Shaken AND act this round, so you can do that if you wish. You have 3 left.

ALL - please always declare *what* the roll is for when you make one...

Male Human Wizard

OK spending a Benny, then recover from shaken.

Attacking Gerta once again.

SpellCasting: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Guess that was a miss.

3/15

Why would a 6 (remember, -1 for your Wound) be a miss? You only need a 4 for the spell to go off, AND a 4 for the spell to hit (barring any environmental penalties). So that's a hit (but no Raise, so no extra d6 damage).
(The TN for ALL Ranged weapons is 4, not the target's Parry.)
Roll your Damage.

I can resolve Marko's action against Gerta, and summarize the round, as soon as the damage is posted. In the meantime, I believe that is the end of the round. So, if anyone is interested :

Initiative (start of round 4)
Alex : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 637
Arabella : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 476
Connor : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 913
K'Don : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 556
Marko : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 949
WindDancer : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 351
Katana : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 512
Gerta : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 143
Orcs : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 791

So, in order : Marko, Connor, Orcs, Alex, (K'Don), Katana, Arabella, WindDancer, Gerta

Male Human Wizard

I had written about a paragraph when the computer froze and I lost it.

Damage: 3d4 ⇒ (2, 1, 3) = 6

6 damage, don't think that was a success.

Summary of round 3
Arabella tries to trick the Orc attacking her, to no success.
Katana attacks the Orc in front of her, finally gets in a hit, and drops him.
Gerta fires her light-gun at Marko, Shaking him.
K'Don lies there in a heap.
All the Orcs miss their victims except Marko's, who was about to land a devastating blow when Marko twisted a little bit out of the way at the last moment, but still got hit pretty badly.
Marko shook off the staggering blow, and threw a bolt of light back at Gerta, but didn't harm her.
Alex whips his rapier around the Orc attacking him, and gets in a good shot, and the Orc drops.
Connor wants to help, but can't get past the maddening crowd.
WindDancer takes a nosedive at the ground and disappears into it!
Gerta fiddles with some controls on the flying machine, and it starts to hum.

Please see initiative order, 3 posts back...

Male Human Wizard

Back to Marko again. Sorry for the missed Init.

Deciding a change of tactic, Marko decides to take a big chance. Instead of attacking Gerta directly, he takes aim at the crystals where Gerta's hand is located. Looking for a crystal that is glowing and looks to be the most important. Hoping to cause an overload or explosion.

Thinking to himself, "I'm really sorry, Arabella, but the loss of the flying ship is minimal compared to the imminent death that's coming.

Changing the type of attack to a 3d6 damage and trapping to "Electric Conduction Burst"

SpellCasting: 1d10 ⇒ 6
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 1

6 is a success!!

Damage: 3d4 + 1d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 1) + (1) = 6
The extra d4 is for more than 10lbs of conductive material.

0/15

If Gerta was just buying time to escape, then Marko may have just doomed the group to "imminent death", by taking away her escape.

Sorry Marko, the spell type and damage ("trapping") is picked at Power selection and cannot be changed on-the-fly. You can target the machine, but still at only 3d4 with a light-like beam.
Actual results tomorrow.

OK the rest of you can go ahead and go now.

ALL - please see Discussion about damaging objects and vehicles.

Gerta's vehicle has a Toughness of 8, so Marko's bolt's damage of 5 (the first 3d4) has no effect.

Waiting a little while for Connor before handling the Orcs, in case his action affects them.

Wounds: 0 | PP: 10/10 | Bennies: 4/4
Alexander James Taarnfalk wrote:
"It's all right, Connor! You're doing a great job! Stay with Master Montalvo!"

Still shaking, Connor looks from Alex to Marko, noticing for the first time that the wizard is injured.

"Mister Marko, you're hurt!" He puts a hand on the man's arm in concern. "Don't be hurt!"

Healing & Wild: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 41d6 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4 => 4, Success, heal one Wound. (-1 is for Marko's single existing Wound.)

Orc A takes a step and with a roar attacks Alex :
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 4 vs. Parry=7 is a miss

Orc F growls something in Orc and attacks Marko :
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 1 vs. Parry=5 is a hit
Damage: 2d10 ⇒ (4, 9) = 13 vs. Toughness=4 is 2 Raises
And Marko takes 2 Wounds from a nasty slice of the blade across his chest.

Katana attacks Orc F with her fists :
Fighting & Wild: 1d8 ⇒ 61d6 ⇒ 6
Explode: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Explode: 1d6 ⇒ 4 = 16 vs. Parry=6 is 2 Raises
Damage: 1d8 + 1d4 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + (3) + 2 + (4) = 15 vs. Toughness=8 is 1 Raise, so the Orc drops.

Alex, Arabella, WindDancer are up.

Sorry about the mistake earlier, I did think the orc was also wounded.

With Connor behind him, Alexander wasn't about to yield ground to the foaming brute at the end of his blade. He pressed the attack, saying loudly, "Once I have seen to this ruffian, Connor, there will be a path free to tend to K'Don, if he yet lives. Where has that little dragon of yours gone?"

rapier: 1d8 ⇒ 5
wild: 1d6 ⇒ 3

Poop. Alex needs to brush up on his footwork.

Male Human Wizard

Master Marko is in deep doo doo, it may be a good thing that Connor is at hand (pun intended). On his turn Master Marko will try to soak one of those wounds if it is appropriate (that is a question. Should he soak one?)

Female Human Card: Bennies: 3 Parry: 5 Toughness: 7 (2) Armored Duster RATN: 4 Pace: 5 Notice: d6

Arabella is no longer on the map. Last turn, she was 2 squares to the left of Orc A, by the wall.

Arabella uses her biogoggs to boost her own fighting skill.

weird science: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Result = 6, success, fighting boosted to d6 for next 3 turns. Parry boosted to 5.

Marko, when you Soak wounds, you do it when the Wounds are inflicted - go go ahead and roll when you can.

Male Human Wizard

Vigor: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 4

I assume a success.

So Marko soaks one and Connor heals one leaving 1 wound left, I think?

0/15, 2/4 Bennys

Marko - correct.
Waiting for WindDancer's spectacular return before Gerta takes action.

We may be waiting a while given his current work situation. (And I understand completely) I was just saying.

I think we should continue the game.

PP 15/15 | Bennies 3/3 | Venom Strike 1/1

Well I dunno how "spectacular" it is, but here ya go.

Alexander James Taarnfalk wrote:
"Where has that little dragon of yours gone?"

Mere seconds later Alex has his answer, as WindDancer bursts from the ground between one of the orc's (A) feet, a blur headed directly for his crotch.

Surprise! (Stealth & Wild): 1d6 ⇒ 11d6 ⇒ 2 =>2, Failure (only means no bonus to attack or damage).

Fighting & Wild: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 41d6 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 =>7, +1 if there's a gang-up bonus?

With a tiny little cry of defiance, she shoots straight upward between his legs and goes for the family jewels.

Bite: 1d4 ⇒ 2 If that's not at least a distraction, there's something seriously broken about Savage Worlds. :op

Apologies for my ragged participation of late. The immutable deadline is past and, while I'll still be working overtime for a while, gaming will return to normal once I catch up (which I'm working on now). I really appreciate everyone's patience. Now let's get back to kicking orc butt!

Well, that sounds pretty spectacular to me...

System notes
-The surprise of 2 is not automatically a failure because it's less than 4, but since it is an opposed roll there is no chance to succeed.
-Targeting a specific location is a "Called Shot", and penalties are based on the size of the target. A small object/area is at -4 to hit, but usually with a correspondingly larger effect (like +4 to damage).

So, your Fighting is 8 - 4 = 4, which does not get thru his Parry.

BTW, your Damage of 2 + 4 = 6 also would not *quite* get thru his Toughness. But another point or two, and it would have been a *serious* distraction!

What are the Orcs Parry and Toughness? The last was 6/8

Gerta, seeing that no one other than Marko has taken a ranged attack against her, shoots him again with her light-gun :

Shooting: 1d8 ⇒ 71d6 ⇒ 3 = 7 vs. TN=4 is a Success
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 1) = 2 does not get thru his Toughness

And then, she fiddles with more controls on the aircart. The crystals begin to glow.

Summary of round 4
Marko fires his last bolt at the flying machine, but does no damage.
Connor heals Marko a little bit.
The Orc attacking Alex takes a mighty swing and misses.
The Orc attacking Marko *almost* gets in a really nasty blow, but at the last second Marko twists to avoid some of the damage.
Alex attacks the Orc who attacked him, but also swings and misses.
But Katana attacks the Orc on Marko, and with a savage flurry of flying fists, manages to drop him.
Arabella fiddles with her goggles and boosts her Fighting and Parry.
Gerta fires at Marko, but does no damage, and gets the flying machine a little more ready to take off.

Initiative (start of round 5)
Alex : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 297
Arabella : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 626
Connor : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 650
K'Don : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 183
Marko : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 603
WindDancer : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 703
Katana : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 258
Gerta : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 819
Orc : Init: 1d1000 ⇒ 479

So in order : Gerta, WindDancer, Connor, Arabella, Marko, Orc, Alex, Katana, (K'Don)

6 Parry, 8 Toughness is correct. Did I call something incorrectly?

Gerta again shoots Marko with her light-gun :

Shooting: 1d8 ⇒ 51d6 ⇒ 4 = 5 vs. TN=4 is a Success
Damage: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4 just equals his Toughness

Marko is Shaken as his pants leg catches on fire.

Not incorrectly, just didn't know if these "more, better, good" orcs had a different set of numbers.

Male Human Wizard

I know it is early in the round, but Marko will mover over to K'Don and try to help him.

Fighting: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 5

Fighting Ace: 1d4 ⇒ 2
So a 6 which is a success.

Damage: 2d4 ⇒ (4, 4) = 8
Wild Ace: 1d4 ⇒ 2
Wild Ace: 1d4 ⇒ 2

12 Damage I"m sure I missed a d4 in there somewhere.

Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 1

Just checking, but you said "move over to K'Don to help him", but your icon is at Gerta - so you're attacking her?

Male Human Wizard

Sorry, I was origially going to go to K'Don but then I saw Gerta and changed who I was attacking. It is Gerta

PP 15/15 | Bennies 3/3 | Venom Strike 1/1

With not a moment's hesitation, she does a vertical U-turn and immediately dives back into the ground to disappear again.

Wounds: 0 | PP: 10/10 | Bennies: 4/4

Connor laughs and cheers WindDancer on for a moment, until she again dives out of sight. His courage bolstered by her example, the boy assesses the situation and then takes an indirect route around Katana to K'Don.

Putting a concerned hand on him, Connor asks, "Are you alright, mister?"

Healing & Wild: 1d8 - 3 ⇒ (8) - 3 = 51d6 - 3 ⇒ (4) - 3 = 1 => 5, Success; Incapacitation cancelled. (-3 is for K'Don's existing Wounds.)

Note, I realize you said K'Don had "5 Wounds." However:

Page 68 wrote:
Wild Cards never have more than three wounds—anything beyond that is just considered three wounds and Incapacitated.

Not "correcting" you, just clarifying why I used a -3 penalty.

Female Human Card: Bennies: 3 Parry: 5 Toughness: 7 (2) Armored Duster RATN: 4 Pace: 5 Notice: d6

Arabella takes a deep breath, draws her dagger, and runs at Gerta. When she gets to her, she takes a swing at her with the dagger, hoping that even if she doesn't hit, she'll be a distraction.

MAP: -2
Gangup: +1
Fighting: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Wild: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Result = 3-1=2, miss
