Hey guys, looking for just one player for a homebrew game, starting at 5th level. Game is set in a type of purgatory, where our heroes must prove their souls innocence before getting sucked straight into hell. The kicker being; your memories of where you are and why you're here have been taken away.

The game is a little experimental, just trying things out. If you're expecting something that strictly abides by rules then you might prefer to move on. Expected posting rate is something around 2-4 days, nothing harsh, though I'll be posting as much as possible. Though there will be no straight pvp or griefing allies, I do not expect your character to be entirely unselfish or completely trusting of your newfound friends (though unfortunately you're still stuck together ;))

We've only just started, so you won't have missed anything so far. Give a read of the gameplay thread to get an idea of what you're in for.

Cheers.

Also, expect some solo interaction via notes with me (or even other players, if you're feeling up to it). Not everyone has to know everything!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I find the concept interesting, but I do think mlre information would be needed.

And for that purpose I will ask a number of relevant questions. Or at least relevant to me.

First the more crunch heavy:
·What are the character creation guidelines? 5th level, yeah, but I'd need stats, wealth, traits, available races/classes et al.
·You said you'd be experimenting. Is there any houserule I should know of?
NoW tothe flavour and fluff:
·What kind of character would you be looking for? You say the players are trying to prove their soul innocence before getting sucked into Hell. Allow me to explain myself... would a paladin who got corrupted in the end be a valid concept? (Substitute paladin for good aligned whatever) What about an evil person who half-way was shown his evil ways and tried to redeem himself? What about one who desires going to hell for reasons unfathomable by others? And a covert Hell's agent, trying to corrupt the rest and achieving it/redeeming himself in the end?
·I suppose you are looking for a serious theme instead of a comical or lighter toned one. But is the game gritty or heroic? Will we be exploring the moral grays or would things pretty black and white? What do the players know about the tasks they need to accomplish to prove themselves innocent? Do they need to be good or simply not hellishly evil?
·Do divine characters lose their powers/connection with their deity?
·Any pet peeve of yours we should know? Being in purgatory and Hell can involve adul themes, and while I have no problem with anything -except maybe getting forceful molested by anythinf that isn't a sexy succubi. I am kidding, I'd only be okay with it if it was Cthulhu.- some people has. Any harsh limit on that?

I think that will suffice for now.

Hey bud,

* 5th level, anything's fine. Only thing I use is Automatic Bonus Progression, otherwise I'm pretty lax with restrictions. As long as you don't intentionally try to drag the game down with an incompatible character design.

* Maybe? I generally just go with the flow. If you want to do something that's cool and makes somewhat sense (say, swinging from the chandelier to do a jumping attack, or dropping a knocking a potted plant over onto an unsuspecting enemies head) then I tend to reward it sufficiently so that you don't feel bad for being creative over just full-attacking.

* Any character is fine, as long as they're not actively ruining other party members fun. All of these suggestions sound unique and fun to me! Have at it.

*It'll be somewhat gritty, I guess, but there's still room for comedy and heroism. Sometimes you'll find yourselves wondering whether you should be doing what's "right", or what's right for you! Other times you might just want to help out of the kindness of your heart. Purgatory is full of piteous souls, after all. Everyone has a story.
Just because your character was tricked into falling into hell doesn't mean they didn't deserve it anyway!

* Divine characters are fine.

* There won't be anything overtly sexual aside from perhaps some humour. I don't have many pet peeves, I only really dislike excessive disrespect of the world and the characters in it (killing random civilians for 0 reason, not taking anything or anyone seriously etc,)

Oh, and I use these homebrews: http://michaeliantorno.com/feat-taxes-in-pathfinder/ just for ease of character creation

Perfect, that makes my job easier and honestly helps building multi-talented characters. And that couple things about going with the flowand being creative, that I like. Rule of Cool is definitely my favourite rule.

Only two missing things I need: stat generation and starting wealth. Wealth is less pressing, as ABP and being inside a bone & flesh cell will very much take care of it. Oh, and will it be standard ABP or no magic items increased level one?

Also, Variant Multiclassing. Yay? Nay? I am looking at Cavalier's one, with Order of the Cockatrice and Order of the Flame ranking high among the options.

Also I would very much like to know what the others players are going to, well, play as I wouldn't like to create a ocharacter that steps on other's turfs.

Right now the concept I have is a dextrous and intelligent fighter, probably an older than average one. I'm orbitating between adventurer that turned to the jaded and less scrupulous side -but with redeeming characteristics like putting a high value on companionship and loyalty. For example, he wouldn't doubt betraying someone if it proves favourable to him and his allies but would necer betray a friend- and a Big Bad lieutenant that after being defeated reconsidered his life choices and what drove him to that point and turned to undo his former master's plans and work towards a greater good -while maintaining a less scrupulous way to do things as he still carries the hubris from being bad for a long time-.

Just so I can have something half prepared to present to you tonight -as it seems we are on auite different posting times- I will assume 20 point buy, but I will be waiting for your answer.

I think wealth is half normal WBL, according to the ABP. I'm not sure what you mean by no magic items increased. If you mean no Sword of +1 then yes, none of that.

I'm cool with anything you wanna do really, that all sounds fine to me.

Just something to keep in mind, and something I should have mentioned, is the other players are fairly new/inexperienced with pathfinder, so I wouldn't expect hyper competence.

We have a Goblin magus, bomb-focused elven alchemist, and a big brute human bloodrager.

20 point buy.

And you're right, we're all Australian, so there's likely to be a bit of delay. C'est la vie.

I meant this:

Automatic Bonus Progression wrote:

If you want to remove magic items entirely (or make them so exceedingly rare that there is no expectation of finding them), consider giving the characters bonuses from the following table as if they were 2 levels higher. The table extends to 22nd level to account for games without magic items.

But your answer clarifies everything, so I will start working on it already.

Also, tell your friend the goblind that I love how she has presented her. I mean, if they are new/inexperienced with Pathfinder, that's even more amazing.

I'm sure she'd appreciate that :)

This sounds really interesting but IDK if I've missed my shot or not. I have a handful of interesting ideas and I love the feat tax rules, makes it so much easier to make characters that can do more than just the one specialty.

Also, roleplaying with Clarice just looks like it's gonna be an absolute treat. That goblin is the truest form of goblin; sheer, distilled comedy with sharp pointy teeth and green skin.

EDIT: Almost forgot to add my character pitch. I was thinking of a Serial Killer vigilante; I'm thinking it'll be a blast to have them skirt the edge of eternal damnation and turn over a new leaf. That said, I'm aware that psychopathy is disturbing and the particular flavor of it unique to a serial killer even more so, having gotten a degree in psychology and criminal justice, so I'm more than willing to come up with a far less... extreme idea.

If you're really interested then I'd be okay with adding a 5th (we have to retcon the 1st post anyway). The concept is cool, I'd say go for it! Just remember that group cohesion is key, and it's okay to have a darker theme, as long as it doesn't get rapey and uncomfortable. Murder is perfectly fine! Though again, keep in mind, a large portion of your most recent memories will be gone (and you'll be earning them back throughout the course of the game. We'll work together to make something that fits the character but is still a surprise even for you :))

Sounds great! How're hit points dealt with here? Also, do you plan on having enough social interaction for the actual Serial Killer abilities, the ones that rely on civilization wanting to punish the SK, to come into play or should I play a serial killer who doesn't have the AT?

Max lvl 1, Average every other level.

I'm not sure how those abilities work, but the game is set in one big city for the most part, which we keep returning to. There's... some forms of law enforcement, but not what you might expect from the world of the living (everyone stuck down here is destined for hell, remember).

Mostly it's a bunch of abilities designed to make it harder for people to track down the serial killer. If there's a city and we spend time in it, then my kit will work just fine.

I could probably incorporate something like that, just haven't really thought about it that far yet, sorry.

If you would prefer to add me on discord/steam/skype/something else, let me know.

.

you still looking for people?

Well these two haven;t got back to me in a while! I'll give them a little while longer. If only one, or neither, return then I'll have a space open! :)

Grand Lodge

This is Emissary! Once again, I'm sorry for the long wait. Hope it's worth ^^

Very busy at work yesterday, almost done with character will send soon.

Closed.

Unfortunately a player has dropped, so I'm re-opening recruitment. Please have a read through of what we've got so far. I'm okay with either ret-conning, or introducing you as a new character. I have a perfect character that you can take over (the cloaked figure who saved the party near the beginning), she's a clean slate, you can make her any way you want, the only thing I really need is that she be a mother.

Otherwise, let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Looking for posts 2/week, nothing strenuous.

Just to update: The gist of the campaign is that you find yourself in purgatory, with a countdown on the number of days until your soul is dragged down into Hell. There's two big problems with that: firstly, you're CERTAIN that, whatever it is, you didn't do whatever it was that's damned you to Hell. Secondly, you've lost the majority of your recent memories... You're innocent, you just don't know what of, or how to prove it, and the clock is ticking...

Interested, willing to play The Mysterious Mother. :)

Will get PC details posted tonight or tomorrow.

What are your thoughts on 3pp? I've got a few ideas, but I was most interested in making a Nightmare Dread accused of... Something. Of course, the scary person is always an easy scapegoat.

There are two links.

Edit: More interesting concept for the character; Unassuming man in the real world who let his fear dictate his actions, finally taking the reins and becoming empowered by his fear post-mortem, driving him to free himself from eternal damnation.

Thanks guys!

@Hunger, looking forward to seeing your idea!

@Joseph, I like the character concept, and I'm okay with basically any class. But, just giving you a heads up, there's likely more RP than combat, so if you were really keen on a highly competent combat beast then this may/may not be the game for you. I'm just making assumptions though! So you might have other ides, if it fits your character then I'm all for it.

While the game seems really neat, I'm having trouble cementing a concept in my mind that I can play around, unfortunately. The basic concept of the dread, I really liked, but I don't think I'm quite good enough at articulating my words to do this game justice. Happy gaming!

Appreciate it. Thanks anyway mate!

Still lookin'! :)

Pop.

Still looking?

If so, I'm interested. To recap, you want:
An active poster, who's willing to roleplay with you and others.
Set in a purgatory, with no memories beyond a suspicion about a crime you didn't commit.
If I want to be an established character, I have to play a mother (which is fine).

And for build:
5th level, automatic bonus, 20 point buy, half wealth by level, anything from Paizo, all those rules from that link you posted upthread.

Is that right? I'm interested and already thinking about it. I'll read over the gameplay to see where I can fit, but I'm already thinking oracle or ninja. Maybe both. What's your opinion on fractional BAB?

Seems good to me!

We only post 1-2 a week really, so doesn't have to be too active. I'm fairly loosey-goosey with rules, so as long as you don't look to abuse rules and stuff I'm cool with most anything you do.

Okay. I'll get to work on a character. Shouldn't take more than a day. If I did decide to take over the mysterious woman, did you have a backstory for her I should take over or am I writing my own (as long as I meet the mother requirement)?

Backstory is all yours, minus the last year or so which you'll have forgotten for the most part.

First draft, for review. I'm still playing with skills and (2nd level) spells, as well as hunting for a more interesting feat than improved initiative. Everything is subject to change, as needed.

Build Notes:
A lore oracle, with spells designed to heal her allies and hinder her enemies. Of note is the spirit guide archetype, which allows me to choose one shaman spirit to gain a hex and spells from each day for added flexibility/utility (my default is gonna be life link from life for low effort ranged heals). Through feats and magic items, I have a large array of utility spell likes. They should be helpful. I hope.

The only problem I think you might have with this is the automatic writing revelation. I figured a divination type ability could be handy in this setting (I imagine that stuff like 'how many marks until I disappear?' or 'how do we get out?' or 'what did we do before we died?' just fails). However, I know some GMs aren't comfortable with scrying abilities in the game or just never give good answers because they dislike em. I get it, I've GMed. I just wanted to make sure it's okay, as I can easily swap it.

Change shape (Su): A kitsune can assume the appearance of a specific single human form of the same sex. The kitsune always takes this specific form when she uses this ability. A kitsune in human form cannot use her bite attack, but gains a +10 racial bonus on Disguise checks made to appear human. Changing shape is a standard action. This ability otherwise functions as alter self, except that the kitsune does not adjust her ability scores.

Kitsune Magic (Ex/Sp): Kitsune add +1 to the DC of any saving throws against enchantment spells that they cast.

Bonded spirit (Su): A spirit guide can form a temporary bond with a spirit, as the shaman’s wandering spirit class feature. She must make this selection each day when she refreshes her spells. A spirit guide cannot bond with a spirit that is incompatible with her alignment, ethos, or mystery (GM’s discretion). A spirit guide gains one hex of her choice from the list of hexes available from that spirit. She uses her oracle level as her shaman level, and she switches Wisdom for Charisma and vice versa for the purpose of determining the hex's effects. She also adds the bonded spirit’s spirit magic spells to her oracle spells known for that day, but only of spell levels she can cast

Wrecking Mysticism: Increase by 50% the duration of any poison, sickened, or nauseated condition that affect you.

Automatic Writing (Su): Once per day, you can spend a full hour in uninterrupted meditation. During this period, your hands produce mysterious writing that pertains to the future. The writing takes the form of a divination with 90% effectiveness.

Brain Drain (Su): You can take a standard action to violently probe the mind of a single intelligent enemy within 100 feet. The target receives a DC 17 Will save to negate the effect and immediately knows the source of this harmful mental prying. Those who fail this save are wracked with pain, taking 5d4 points of damage. After successfully attacking with this ability, you may use a full-round action to sort through the jumble of stolen thoughts and memories to make a single Knowledge check using the victim's skill bonus. The randomly stolen thoughts remain in your mind for 5 rounds. Treat the knowledge gained as if you used detect thoughts. This is a mind-affecting effect.

Sidestep Secret (Su): Your innate understanding of the universe has granted you preternatural reflexes and the uncanny ability to step out of danger at the very last second. Add your Charisma modifier (instead of your Dexterity modifier) to your Armor Class and all Reflex saving throws. Your armor's maximum Dexterity bonus applies to your Charisma instead of your Dexterity.

Proposed background:
Dana was raised in a minor fey household, and then married into another. Using her natural fortune telling powers, she managed to raise the rank of her new house significantly, while training in more kinds of magic. Life was good, until the birth of her second child. She had a vision showing her new child performing many terrible acts as an adult, including murdering Dana's husband and daughter for the ownership of the house. She ranted for weeks to warn them, and was locked up so her madness would remain secret. She doesn't remember anything after that, although she suspects she broke out using her magic.

She found herself in the purgatory an amount of time before the rest of the party (I was thinking a week?). Dana has been using her divination skills as much as possible to little success for finding things out about this world. Her only success involved asking 'How do I escape?' and seeing an image of her throwing the sun bomb down from the wall at the rest of the party. She has since been following the party, trying to work out how they will get her out.
