"Wait, the plan is to leave a potential enemy at our back? It seems obvious that the bizarre little man left the cell through the secret door... hardly the actions of a prisoner desperate for escape."

Yantri Ironshield | Dwarf Gunslinger 2 | Speed 20ft | Active conditions: None | HP: 22/22 | Grit: 3/3 | AC: 17 (14 T, 13 FF) | CMB: +2, CMD: 15 | F: +4 R: +6 W: +3 | Init: +3 | Perc: +8 | Ammo: 17 Cartridges

Yantri looks at the secret door and the ground around it, as well as the ground in the cell.

Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Checking to see if there are any tracks in here other than ours, and if so, where they seem to lead. Also, seeing if the dust as thick here as it has been in the corridor and other cells. Barring anything particularly interesting,

Yantri takes up a position by the door. "That's a good point N'gai, but if the rest of you want to finish exploring these cells I can stay at the gate here and cover that doorway. Don't need the light and you'll hear the report of Penance if anything shows. If we don't finish checking the cells then we'll have a nagging worry about what might be there instead of here."

Each cell Sheridan checks are like the first ones he checked in this bloc: locked, with decayed remnants of each chamber’s final occupant.

Yantri, there is no sign anyone was walking around in here other than members of your own party.

The secret door is unlocked.

If Sheridan wonders all the way around, he sees a similarly secret door leading back to the hallway of the empty cells to the north.

Yantri, covering the secret door while the others finish exploring the area, has time to look and think. It's a welcome moment given the chaos of the day so far. When the others return she nods and lets them pass her to enter the cell.

"Nothing's moved in here while you were gone. As far as I can tell from the ground nothing's moved in here but us for years. Whatever it was that took Kane's food and water and left it there wasn't walking around on this floor. This place ... this place is no good. It's no good now and it was no good when there were people who walked these halls. We should finish our investigation, get what answers we can find, and get out."

Sheridan returns to the larger cell, nodding thoughtfully. "You're right. I don't think those little guys got this far. They might have tunneled in somewhere in this rubble, but whatever toppled the tower happened on the ruined upper floors. What we're looking at here is older than that... but is it older than the Baron's disappearance? Either way, the look of things says he didn't get in here either. There might be treasure though, and who can resist a second secret door?"

The cleric gives a small knowing smile to the dwarfs statement and responds kindly.

"Steel yourself Yantri, this place will be dangerous enough without giving fear a place to thrive on imagination. Places like this are a focus of traumas and auras even in the most pure of places that require them."

"I think we should proceed with the door if everyone is ready."

In the room at the end of this narrow corridor is a strange metallic contraption of gears and chains. A large lever extends out at a forty-five-degree angle from the front of it. Hovering above it is a small, roiling cloud of energy that periodically sends out sparks of electricity into the air or along the chains.

Other than the occasional arc of electricity shooting out to the chains or in the air, this creature gives no sign it even knows you're there.

Decide an order before walking down the corridor, if you go at all, as it will have to be single-file.

Sheridan is delighted to see something alive in these halls of mortal leftovers. With some consideration, he offers: "I'm not sure what it does, but I have a few ideas on how to either make it stop or make it go. This narrow passage might pose an obstacle. Lightning can be a bit clingy."

The ifrit examines the narrow corridor, looking for metal plates or glass orbs which might indicate a trap.

"Not sure what this device is supposed to do, but the creature above it is actually a lighting elemental! ...just a small one though. My guess is, it was summoned from the Plane of Air and put to work powering whatever this device does. Not entirely uncommon to use them for purposes like this. They are attracted to metal, so it'd be wise for less armored folks to tackle it, should it get angry... curses. And I've already placed a defensive talisman on my person for the day, too... that would've really helped."

"As to the device it seems to be powering... the most logical answer is that it controls some other aspect of these dungeons. Anything from doors, to floor panels, the like."

Sheridan doesn't balk at the concept of an elemental being tied to a menial task. He's done more for less. He does laugh out loud at the chance encounter. He'd judged there to be life here, but he'd meant it metaphorically.

"It's a shame. Lightning is one of those things at the borders between elements, like magma, but most speak on whispered winds. It's the same concept, just different sounds. A lot more differenter than languages like common or Dwarven. Just a whole different way of putting ideas together." The ifrit nods as though he's shared something profound. "I could see if they know some Ignan- and if they're paying any attention. I'd hate to bother them if they're otherwise occupied, though. No-bloods can be very condescending in my experience."

Confident the narrow corridor isn't trapped, Sheridan approaches, pocketing the keyring, and spinning the sap at the end of its thong.

Kane:
From what you can see of the contraption, you guess that it feeds into that ridge on the ceiling from the north bloc. You change your opinion about the machine. You don't it's powered by the elemental. The elemental must be here to prevent it's use.

Sheridan, the elemental does not appear to register your existence; gives no hint of sentience.

Kane allowed Sheridan to try and communicate with the elemental... though his prediction that it wouldn't understand or regard him was true. But it afforded him some time to study things a bit more, eyes roving over the device and the area, before tapping his foot.

"...you know, I think this actually feeds into that ceiling ridge from the northern block. Though... hm... you know, now that I think on it a bit more, these guys are drawn to metal. Perhaps it's not meant to power this device... but to deter its use. So, uh... if we have any desire to use this thing, we'll have to get rid of the elemental beforehand... what it will do, I still don't know for certain. Either way, unless anyone speaks Aurun, which is the language of the Plane of Air, I doubt it will listen to us. Even if we did, it probably wouldn't bother. It seems to be a security system." Kane glances down in embarrassment.

"I... I fear I left my Planes Translation Pocket Guide at home."

From the back of the group Yantri can occasionally see the swirling lightning elemental, the contraption and the lever. "Nothing in there looks anything like what I've got experience with, but from what you're saying it looks like that thing is unresponsive for now. I agree with Kane, based on the placement that that lever probably has something to do with the line we saw out in the hall to the East. How likely do we think it is that we'd be able to take a good close look at the mechanisms there without the elemental starting to pay more attention. If we can figure out what it does it might help us decide what to do next."

Kane frowned, before drawing his axe and stepping to the side, readying a small slip of paper with curious symbols on it. He had a bad feeling about this...

If the elemental does anything other than sit there while she messes with the machine, Kane is readying his protective ward ability. Gives everyone a +1 deflection to AC.

The moment Ngai pulls the lever, the cloud darkens likes a thunderstorm, gathering itself into a humanoid form, with sparks for eyes, its cloudy arms and hands charged with bolts of lightning. That's not quite what I had in mind, but no time to worry about it now.

Seeing the Elemental surge to life, Yantri sets to motion immediately. She deftly slips Stone and Kane in order to open up the field a bit; Sheridan is still in the way, but by squeezing against the west wall the dwarf can still get a bead on the Elemental. Kane winced. Why did he always have to be right!? Luckily, he had his trusty little paper! Holding it up as the symbols on them glowed bright blue, it hovered up in the air over him, casting rays of light that printed the symbols on those nearby. btw, this foe is not subject to critical hits, precision-based attacks, or flanking.

Sheridan does some fancy maneuvering, swings and misses. Despite his best efforts to "make the cloud rain itself," he just ends up make scary faces at a cloud, and the cloud was unimpressed.

Listening to the chain, the ifrit whispers, "Release the Kaken."

Looking around at the others, Sheridan speaks up as if he hadn't said anything. "The aqueduct was a chain-queduct. I say we should go to the other end of the first hall of cells. That's where that ceiling pipe goes. Maybe there's another secret door."

Wandering a bit closer to the machinery now that the situation has settled down, Yantri listens to the conversation as she examines the contraption. This is the best thing that she's seen in these depths, though there's not been much competition for that particular title so far. If it weren't down here this might be interesting to try to take apart, but as it is, it's not worth staying for.

"Well, whatever was pulling that chain seems to have kept it's power even though the elemental is gone. Based on the positions here I'd guess Sheridan has the right of it. That chain was probably running through the ridge we saw outside. Unless anyone sees anything here they'd like to spend more time with I agree that heading back to the other cells makes sense."

Assuming everyone concurs with Sheridan's suggested course of action, the party leaves this corridor-chamber, through the interrogation room, into foul-smelling secret cell bloc, and goes through the western "secret" door discovered by Sheridan when he was inspecting the western cells.

I assume Stone is recasting light every 10 minutes or so on the insignia around his neck. Does anyone still have a torch? If you were holding it during the course of combat, let's say you dropped it, it went out and must be re-lit.

Kane will stick behind Ngai as they make their way forward, ready for anything that might pop up. He pays particular interest to the roofing, mentally mapping out the layout of the dungeons.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Unfortunately, the runes on his axe begin to distract him as he lowers it to study them a bit closer. "Most intriguing... the initiator strokes on these two runes seem to match closely with those of Tien origin... and these two runes bear striking resemblance to..."

Aaaaaaand he's back to muttering about his work.

Once the party has left the hidden section of the dungeon Yantri takes stock. Just the one way left to go I suppose. Hopefully we're done with these cells. Locking someone away, it's just ... inconcievable.

Looking up Yantri sees the groove disappear into the west wall. Without an obvious explanation for what it does she shrugs and files it away for later. Instead she looks to the ground again.

Yantri:
Once again, Yantri finds even more evidence that everywhere you've been, and this unexplored corridor is no different, hasn't been visited in a long, long time. The kobolds obviously came from somewhere, given that two were on the ground floor, but they weren't in these dungeon blocs at all. But maybe by going where they haven't been will lead you to where they are.

Everyone take a round of movement.

Sheridan heads down the hall cautiously. "You feeling okay Ngai? That bully elemental really gave you a shock."

Ngai smiles back, "I'm ok, a little twitchy but it'll pass. Can't seem to get the taste of metal out of my mouth though." The bloodrager smacks her lips a few times, as if tasting something acrid.

The cleric grins.

"Its good to get punched in the mouth every once in a while. Lets you know you're still alive."

"All joking aside Ngai, that took guts. I'm not sure there was any other way. Hopefully the mechanism working whatever it is will be in our favor."

"Anyways."

"Looks like this corridor is the only unexplored one so lets get to it. I'll keep an eye out in case I have to burst or touch heal you. Just don't rip my arm off and beat me with it thinking I'm trying to get fresh with you. Heh heh."

Yantri advances up the hallway to the turn and positions herself in the corner, musket loaded, raised and aimed towards the door Ngai is standing next to. "Ready on this end."

With Ngai's permission:

Ngai opens the door and immediately steels herself in a defensive position. Nothing emerges or makes a sound from inside the room.

There can be little doubt what purpose this chamber once served. The dank room stores an ancient rack, a fanciful brazen bull, an iron maiden, a cauldron, iron chairs with sharp edges
and cruel protuberances, and a wooden table upon which sit various implements of torture. A bronze plaque affixed to the western wall depicts a crowing rooster above crossed spears. Underneath the spear, a short phrase is inscribed.

Ngai:
You hear a voice. Is it in your head? Maybe. You're not sure. You hear:

"You look weary. Rest in one of the chairs provided here."

Will Ngai: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13

You feel compelled to obey and sit in a chair. You enter the room, pick a chair and sit. You immediately jump back up because the chair was covered in spikes!
You take 1d4 ⇒ 4points of damage.

Then, after a moment, you all hear a shrill voice saying, "You look weary. Rest in one of the chairs provided here." This throws everyone off-guard. But what throws everyone off even more is that Ngai immediately enters the room and sits on a spike-covered chair. She immediately hops back up with a yelp.

Just then, a tiny raven appears as if from nowhere on top of the rooster plaque. He speaks to you with the shrillest voice.

"Greetings, fine citizens of our glorious empire! So good to have visitors, though I fear I have no refreshments to offer. I assume you are here for the treasure. Well, I'd be happy to assist, provided that you give me what I require! It has been so long since I was able to ply my trade. I require only that each of you shed your life's blood in this room-simply take a seat in one of my lovely chairs, as your friend demonstrated."

Kane's first object of note is the phrase inscribed under the spear, interested in what it said. Perhaps a clue..?

Linguistics (if needed): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Kane blinked a moment as Ngai actually took a seat in one of the torture chairs! What was she thinking!? But when the raven presents itself and starts talking to them about plying its trade, Kane furrowed his brow and stared at the creature. Something about this seemed... off. Kane suspected magic. Compulsion, perhaps. Now HERE was his area of study.

"Not treasure, my little friend... kobolds. And possibly a wizard. And no, I believe I will refrain from your kind offer. Though, if you wouldn't mind holding still... Ngai, I believe it wise you stay back for this one. This is my expertise." Kane pulled out a slip of paper with foreign symbols drawn down the center, holding it up and holding it between his eyes for a moment. The symbols glowed a dull blue, his eyes matching the hue as he studied the creature.

Call him skeptical, but he doubted this raven was really a raven.

Casting Detect Magic on the raven for a couple rounds. Either it's actually awakened and genuinely talking, or it's an illusion of some sort. Last I checked, most ravens don't talk unless they're familiars...

Yantri watches in horror as Ngai unexpectedly enters the room and sits in a spiked chair. When the Raven appears and Kane engages it Yantri keeps her distance and her eyes on the Raven, taking aim with her musket while calling out to her friend in the room. "Ngai! What happened? Are you alright? Please come back out of that foul chamber and let us look you over!"

”I am also going to decline the offer. I try to keep myself out of such contraptions.”

Sceptical as ever the cleric asks critically.

”Pray tell how a raven would survive down here for well over 100 years? Let alone a talking one. Hummmm, unless . . . “

His eyes narrow.

”Is your master about familiar?”

The cleric casts his eyes about the chamber.
