I'm actually not sure what to do. Squeak is certainly prepared to die in the course of his duties, and is willing to set himself on fire if it will also burn the mummy.
Companions need desperately to be saved, but it is hard to see how when there is this much damage going around.
If Vi does not have a magical weapon, potentially Squeak could give her his?
Anyone see anything I do not?

Cast Acid Splash? it will bypass his AC (which is pretty high) and force a save, which we haven't done a ton of yet.

I've looked this over and things are not that bad...

The half-dragon mummy has 50 hitpoints left and it's resistant to non-magic weapons (takes half damage) but it is vulnerable to fire (takes double damage).

Both Squeak and Bronwyn have firebolts which does 2d10 or 4d10 to the mummy. Get a critical and it does 8d10.

Obviously the dice have to help because you have to hit it but there's a chance here...

I would also be willing to have you roll with advantage if you get creative on how you detonate a firebolt. (i.e., get close to the mummy and you also take damage or something to that effect).

Bronwyn breathed an internal sigh of relief as Squeak seemed to snap out of whatever had been paralyzing him. The problem she now faced was that all she could see was Squeak's back as he had firmly placed himself between her and the mummy. If she was going to help, she'd have to move.

Knowing it was a risk to her own life, Bronwyn stepped up beside Squeak so that she could shoot a firebolt straight into the mummy's face. "Stop picking on my friends and die already!

Just in case she gets advantage as well for flanking with Fendir, I'm giving you two rolls. I would assume she does stepping up beside Squeak but what do I know.

Ah! That's pretty much exactly what I was going for. Squeak has a lot of oil. He was attempting to ignite himself and run into the Mummy, forcing both of them to take fire damage.
If Firebolt is the way to do that, then fair enough.
if there is All Out Attack in 5e, consider him doing that.
I was hoping to turn it into a mild AoE, but fair enough.
@Bronwyn - doesn't B get two firebolts, or something?
Squeak steps forward, the oil catching as the firebolt incendiarise light. Flashing and sparkling the Warforged goes up like a Rebirth Eve firework.

OOC: we'll call this 'player error'. Your firebolt is being cast within 5' of an enemy and thus you need to make your ranged attack with disadvantage.

Or you could try and move away (incur an opportunity attack) and cast it.

Or you could cast something that doesn't need an attack roll like burning hands.

Why don't you try again and give me a good description of the results?

For a moment, Vi almost dropped her bow and ran. So great was her desire to flee, that as Bronwyn said the words she was ready to act. Until she saw that the hasty sorceress wasn't heeding her own words. Vi couldn't run while Bronwyn stayed to fight.

Vi fumbled arrow after arrow, though this one came closer than the others. "No, no, no nonono..." she moaned in despair.

However, her complete and utter incompetence in the face of the horrific dragon mummy suddenly ceased to matter. Bronwyn's fire finally finished what the others had started, and the creature erupted in a gout of flame and ash. It took a teetering step towards Bronwyn, then fell in a swirl of ash and smoke and the wizard's feet.

For a moment there was silence. Vi's ears rang with the aftermath of the flames and the battle. Finally she shook herself free of terror, and scrambled along the floor towards the others. Reaching Squeak first, she looked for something she could do, somewhere she could apply pressure, but was at a complete loss. "Healing, we need healing," she moaned, tearing through his bag, looking for a potion, or an unguent, or anything that would help.

Can I do Aid Another (or the equivalent) to help a death save? Also, anybody have a potion in their bag that Vi can find?

Action 1:

As the adrenaline left her body, Bronwyn crumpled to the ground. She hurt all over, her dress was ruined, and her protectors were unmoving on the ground. Tears streamed down her face and she sat there paralyzed by despair.

Then Vi's voice cut through the silence. Healing, they did need healing. They needed Palisade and his creator goddess.

Bronwyn winced as she moved over to help Vi. She didn't have the strength to stand so she crawled over. "Whatever we find we need to give it to Palisade and get him back on his feet. He can help everyone else." They finally found a healing potion in Palisade's things.

With Vi's help, Bronwyn managed to tilt Palisade's head back and get his mouth open. She raised her face to ceiling and said, "Ummm, creator goddess, your devout servant Palisade needs your help. I'm sure there's some sort of paragraph or section or subsection that speaks to the employer providing a safe work environment and if the employee should be hurt or maimed or something that the employer shall provide suitable compensation. Since Palisade is like your employee I'm trusting you to honour your obligation and help Palisade to regain health and consciousness." She paused, "Ummm, Amen?"

The wizard looked at the potion and then looked at Vi, "This better work. It has to work." She then proceeded to pour it into Palisade's mouth.

Healing still works on warforged and is just less effective, right? If it makes more sense to try to get Squeak conscious first so that he can repair himself and then Palisade so that Palisade can heal the others, then she'd do that instead.

Action 1

3rd death save: 1d20 ⇒ 8 3 fails, 0 successes...

Dusk's prone form had been lying in a pool of ever expanding red, her life force slowly soaking in to the stone of the chamber.

As the undead half-dragon continued its relentless assault on the others, the tiefling took a final shuddering breath, and then was still.

Her shadowblade, still clasped in one hand, began to melt away. Darkness crept along Dusk's arm, the shadow spreading like paper soaked in ink, until it had engulfed her whole form. Her body began to fade then, claimed by the Shadowfell she had forged a pact with, it was almost gone from view until...

...Bronwyn's last, desperate fire spell overcame the necrotic energies animating the mummy. As it collapsed in a swirl of ash and dust, motes of shadow blossomed in the cloud, streaming across to Dusk and darting in to her body. The growing stain of shadow across her flesh faltered and stopped.

She took a sudden breath, gasping and wrenching herself in to a position with her back against the sarcophagus, eyes wide and glancing about.

The tiefling's skin returned to a paler shade of its normal colour as her blade rematerialised next to her.

"Is everyone else...ok?"

She still clutched her side, face covered in her own blood as she watched Vi and Bronwyn assisting the others.

"I've no magic, nor potions or unguents I'm sorry"

It was all she could do to hold on to consciousness.

Action 2

"Well that's that, no Crown and yet it should have been here. We'll have to take the other pieces back to Sur'Kil on their own."

She looked around at the group, fatigue and pain on everyone's faces.

"Perhaps we should rest up a little first before we try to go back the way we came, no telling what might have happened since we've been down here..."

Fabian, thank you for putting the story over the dice :)

I enjoyed the element of real danger and threat the mummy introduced, it was more than touch and go there! Yet appropriate for the (presumably) final level of the ruins!

To all: I really enjoyed reading the sometimes quite intense RP of your character's thoughts and feelings during the fight and how they reacted when other people were under threat, well done :)

To quote Iron Man at the end of the first Avengers movie: "Alright. yay. hurray guys."

Fendir sits up with a groan as Palisade heals him. He was not exactly thrilled that he had nearly died so much today, but he had not brought dishonor to his family. Standing, he collected his possessions and secured them, then took stock of the situation: the dragon man was dead and he and his were not.

Very much a victory, as far as Fendir was concerned.

Yay for survival! Also, fun fact – Palisade doesn’t have mouth or movable jaw – just a thin slit in its otherwise smooth faceplate.

And yes, ‘forged only got half the benefit from Cure spells and full from Repair ones, but if we are going to take rests I don’t think a point here or there will matter much… if you get Palisade up it’ll first restore Squeak (I doubt it’d remember at this point that Squeak has used up all his spells for the day already), and we together can heal everyone else. Mundane healing if magical won’t cut it.

Bronwyn wrote:
The wizard looked at the potion and then looked at Vi, "This better work. It has to work." She then proceeded to pour it into Palisade's mouth.

Darkness gave way to light as the healing draught did its work and Palisade’s single eye lit up, focusing on Bronwyn’s face. ”Lady d’Deneith,” Palisade said, noting the weakness in its own voice, gradually becoming aware of the multitudes of injuries its body had sustained. ”Observation. This one seems to have stopped functioning for moment. The fact this one was returned to consciousness would suggest the enemy has been eliminated. Reassured. This one did not doubt your magic would prove equal to the task, Lady d’Deneith. Query. Did any of our force sustain fatal injuries? If so, may this one suggest the presence of lava will make the safe disposal of bodies convenient?”

So… let’s use up all spell slots, first CW for Squeak, then one for Fendir and Dusk, and last one for Bronwyn, of course.

Let's go get a shawarma, guys. I don't know what it is, but I want to try it.

Vi laughed weakly at Palisade's assessment of the situation. "Yep, Bronwyn saved our asses. All hail the queen of fire." Limping over to the others, she said, "Nobody's dead, not yet. But Squeak needs a blessing. And these new guys as well." And me, she thought, flinching as she looked at the damage to her hands, and feeling it on her face. But she could still move, so it could wait.

After Squeak was up, she gave her friend a ginger hug. "What happened there, Squeak? We almost lost you. Please, never try to blow yourself up again."

Moving to the tiefling, Vi brushed hair from the woman's forehead. "Are you okay?" she asked softly.

As Palisade's blessing brought Fendir back to consciousness, Vi checked to make sure all his bones were in place. Slapping him on the shoulder, she said, "You may be a brave idiot, but I'm glad you're our brave idiot."

Both Warforged were now fussing over Bronwyn, so Vi gritted her teeth and assessed her own damage. The changeling had come close to death before, but nothing like this acid, which still stung and burned, despite the potion she'd taken.

When Palisade had assured himself that Bronwyn was okay, Vi asked, "Do you have enough energy to give me a wash? It's still burning, and I think I need to see the damage."

She gasped as gallon after gallon of clean, cool water poured over her. It took away the blood and ash, and most of her clothes as well. Staring at the damage to her body, hands and arms, chest and belly, and the tops of her legs, Vi flinched as the salt of her tears stung the burns on her face.

Closing her eyes, she focussed on healing her skin. Well, not healing, not really. But she could rearrange her resources to make her skin less raw. The cells of her body shifted, smoothing over the acid burns, rebuilding skin over the exposed muscle and bone. An ache started, deep inside her gut, as her cells there lost cohesion, as she transferred the damage to somewhere less vulnerable, to a part of her that wouldn't hurt with every gust of hot air.

Finally, gasping, Mei'Vi opened her eyes again. She'd kept the elven Face, not feeling up to more change than necessary. Looking at her hands, feeling her cheeks, she saw that she'd succeeded. Mostly. Her skin was red and pocked and blistered, but at least it was skin again.

Also, she wasn't glowing purple any more. Staring at the ring on her finger, she said, "And what, by the seven, was that about? Invisible some times, and glowing the other? Gotta say, gnome, not impressed with your work."

Action 2

Hobbling around the room, Vi looked for signs of the missing crown. She checked the alcoves for secret spaces, then rummaged around the sarcophagus, wondering if the mummy had liked the crown so much it slept with it.

Bronwyn's tear-stained face beamed down at Palisade as she leaned over him. "I've never been so overjoyed to be called Lady d'Deneith. Praise the goddess you're back among the living. She lowered her head and gave Palisade a kiss on his forehead. "Very glad. Now, when you feel a bit stronger, as Vi said, we all need your healing. Vi and I are the only ones still standing but only barely. But first you need repairs which means we need Squeak back on his feet."

Once Squeak was conscious, Bronwyn scooted over to him and threw her arms around both him and Vi. "Group hug! I'm so thankful you're still with us. You pulling me out of the way and switching places with me saved my life, Squeak. I can't thank you enough. But if you ever attempt to self-detonate again, I will be very angry."

She nodded at Dusk and Fendir, "You both were also integral to our survival, thanks."

Action 2:

Bronwyn looked at the collected items with reverent awe. "This sceptre and amulet are absolutely stunning. Dragonshards containing dragonmarks isn't something I've seen before. I wonder which mark is contained within the crown?" A wide smile spread across her face, "I bet it's the Mark of Sentinel because every lady needs a crown."

The wizard also looked at the mummy's amulet with a critical eye. "I wonder if it's even worth detecting magic on these items. I would assume the sceptre and the amulet are magical for sure considering they're artifacts. The mummy's necklace however could have just been a fashion statement or could have served a purpose. Once we rest, I should be able to determine more."

Action 1

Squeak's consciousness returned, his vision filled with Palisade's face. Damage marked every inch of the 'Forged. His eye glow flickered. There was a slight downwards angle on his head. It was not so often that Palisade displayed his inner thoughts so openly.

Memory rushed back, and with that memory, shame. Past the damage warnings an alert bubbled to the top of his mind, and Squeak turned his head, desperately, as he looked for Bronwyn. His first guess - that Palisade had positioned himself to treat Squeak and see Bronwyn simultaneously proved correct.

The urge to keep his defect secret rose. Fighting the urge he prepared himself, but even as he started to speak Bronwyn hugged him, and Vi asked after his health. Somehow he found himself stopped. The secret burned in his mind, but he told himself he needed everyone conscious first. He needed to assist Palisade.

"No deaths." he reflected "I was... we were lucky. It could have been much worse." 'Bronwyn put herself in harms way to help me. Palisade took the blow that should have been mine.'

Strangely even more than the obvious drive to avoid destruction, it was the inevitable loss of respect that caused the most fear. Bronwyn, he felt, might even want to keep him around, despite that he was demonstrably a hazard.

Action 2
Squeak still stayed silent, grappling internally with conflicting priorities and drives. 'They need me to carry things. Who would cook? They can hardly decommission me here - they'd have to drag my chassis back in order to file a warranty claim.'

'Palisade.' he decided 'Reliable, dependable, standardised Palisade. While the organics sleep, I will tell Palisade. My mental capabilities are obviously damaged. It would be foolish to rely on what I think. Palisade will know what to do.'

Dusk's gaze tracked Vi as she came over, she smiled weakly as the changeling asked if she was ok

"Battered, bruised and bloody, yet things have definitely improved in the last few moments"

She gently took one of Vi's hands and held it against her cheek, her eyes closing for a moment before flashing open again.

"I will survive, you should see to yourself!" she nodded at the elf's burned skin.

She let Vi's hand go, squeezing slightly before the touch was broken and the woman moved to check the others.

Dusk watched Fendir hack the mummy in to pieces and drop parts in the lava below.

"Normally I would make a quip about overkill, but in this case I'm in full support"

She nodded in camaraderie with the barbarian, before turning her attention back to Vi as she was suddenly doused with water from Palisade's decanter. Her expression was appreciative and curious as she watched how comfortable Vi seemed to be with her body, even in the company of new friends, before her eyes went momentarily wide in surprise as Vi's form shifted back and forth, revealing her true nature. The tiefling smiled as she met Vi's gaze again.

"Well you really were hiding treasure under those leathers. We'll need to go shopping for a new outfit it seems! I'm glad you're looking less injured now."

As Bronwyn admonished Squeak, Dusk nodded as vigorously as her sore neck would allow.

"Yes, no more self-detonation threats..."

She listened as Bronwyn thanked her and Fendir.

"Thanks, I believe we were quite useful in blocking its teeth and claws with our bodies and heads"

You have to admit that that has a fantastic ring to it...Queen of Fire. I wonder if I ordered Palisade and Squeak to call me that that they would actually do it. I've never actually saved the day before. I've brightened a lot of days by my mere presence but never actually saved one before. I could get used to this. Although next time there better be a lot less threat of death."

This isn't going to go to Bronwyn's head at all :)

Bronwyn gathered the sceptre, amulet, and necklace. "Yes we need to rest but we can't do it here. The heat is uncomfortable and there isn't a mattress to be seen. I seem to remember there being places to sleep upstairs. Should we risk taking a look? We've dealt with the disrespectful children so maybe the rest of the lizardfolk will be more welcoming now."

Bronwyn would vote for finding a more comfortable place to rest

"I'm with the fiesty queen of fire and flame here"

Dusk nodded at Bronwyn.

"We should rest before heading out in to the jungle again, and there was a place more suited to temporary resting back upstairs."

She pawed at her belt pouch and retrieved a runestone, shaking it then smacking it with one hand until it glowed blue.

"Sur'Kil, we have to talk about how you define 'Easy retrieval job by the coast'. In other news, two out of three objectives secured. Location of third unknown. Exfil'ing now."

She stuffed the stone back and winced as she dragged herself upright, leaning on her sword for support.

"Right then, after we rest, anyone have any ideas on how we can carry those sacks of coins back to Adderport?"

Vi didn't realize she'd been worried about revealing her true nature until she felt herself relax at Dusk's accepting words. Interesting. I really like her!

After they'd convinced themselves there were no more secrets hiding down here, Vi said, "Okay, let's go back upstairs. I feel like I could sleep for a week. We have our sentinels to keep watch...you know, I really feel badly for you two sometimes. I can't imagine not getting to, or even wanting to sleep, especially after something like this."

She led the way back through the chamber, to where the shifting platforms were. "Khyber below, I'd forgotten about this. Do you suppose those uglydogs will come back?" Nobody knew, so she added, "I guess there's only one way to find out." She stepped onto the platform and pulled the chain to set it moving again.

Assuming nothing happens....Is that gate at the end of the hallway open now?

When they arrived at the treasure hoard, Vi couldn't help smiling. "Right. Treasure. The whole reason we're here." Turning to Squeak, she said, "We'll have to ask your friend to come help us with this, she looks strong enough to carry the lot."

Finally arriving back in the main temple, Vi was relieved to find it deserted. Even the kindly cleric was gone. Collapsing into one of the oversized beds, the changeling closed her eyes and waited for healing sleep to wash over her.

Back in the room with the treasure:

Fendir picks up his sack that contains his share of the treasure and then puts it over his back before moving to the rope to begin climbing up.

"Companion Palisade" Squeak fell back into formal speech "I need to consult with you privately. Noticing that we are currently alone I request that you interrupt your activities below priority 2 to deal with this. It has an impact on the safety of Bronwyn."

yeah, don't see Palisade saying no to that ;p
"Regret: I am defective" Squeak slumped - an expression practiced so endlessly it had become habit "During the fight I suffered an overload to my cogitators. I am unsure what caused the overload, but it appears to have been a latched heuristic."
Squeak started to stop, then stopped stopping, and started again, eyes trained on the ground "I suffered issues with my movement, targeting and metaprocessing. I couldn't move, and I couldn't seem to hit the target." With a literal squeak he continued "In an effort to reboot me, Bronwyn put herself between me and danger. Only when she was injured was my goal prioritisation heuristic able to break the deadlock and reset the latched heuristic."

"Request: I would like you to confirm that this is a defect, and not undetected combat damage to my core." he trailed off "Obviously if I have a faulty cogitator I cannot trust my own judgement. It follows that I therefore need to turn my self into a certified repair technican. You, here, are the only one who can do this."

"I submit to you that scrapping me here would be problematic. We are already overloaded, and that would add six hundred pounds to be carried by the organics. I suggest that I be decertified for combat, and carry the load back to Adderport."

Well, if the place is safe let's by all means take our time resting here - for all we know, the mission is not time-critical at the moment. Perhaps our employer will tell us differently once we contact him, but this temple is the only defensible location in the area we know about, so best we don't leave before we are in a shape to brave the jungle.

"There is no need to feel guilty, companion Mei'Vi. Declaration. We were created not to succumb to the many weaknesses of the flesh. It is only reasonable to expect one to make use of the abilities it was born with. So please take advantage of the opportunity and sleep in peace. We shall remain awake, watching."

And since we will have some time, and way more copper coins that we know what to do with, I think Palisade will go ahead and magically make itself that beard we spoke about ;^)

"Unit Squeak, you were not alone at failing in the challenge against the undead creature," Palisade replied calmly. "Observation. This one did manage little beside distracting the enemy until it proceeded to almost dismantle this one. We were both saved by the might of Lady d'Deneith. A failure to us as her bodyguards, but a sign that she is growing to eclipse us, outgrowing her need for us."

"Suggestion. Seeking perfection is a laudable goal, but not an easy road to travel, and not a goal one is perhaps even meant to reach," the 'forged went on, a touch of introspection in its voice. "Instead of falling into despair, you should take time to run a tactical analysis of the battle, identify mistakes and tactics that would have been superior to the ones you ended up choosing and use the knowledge to take one step further on that steep road to your full potential."

"For did the Creator Goddess herself say: "If it works, it works and leave it well enough alone. If it doesn't, make it to.""

I guess I should have clarified with you how you want Bronwyn to use Shield. Yes, it's a reaction so would I tell you after she gets hit whether she would be using it or not? I'll have to train my brain because usually after one of my characters gets hurt, then they're hurt and I move on rather than thinking to cast as a reaction.

Also, are the least dragomark spelllike abilities I have to choose from the ones the belong to Mark of Sentinel or any least dragonmark spelllike ability? And are these on pg 66 of Eberron Campaign Setting? Or does she get an additional use of Shield? Just wanting to be sure since her original dragonmark abilities changed when we went from Pathfinder to D&D and I'm wondering what list I go off of. If it's an extra use of Shield then that's great. I wanted to be sure.

And to make sure Bronwyn reacts properly...her current dragonmark has changed, correct? I wanted to make sure that she didn't get a second dragonmark...

Bronwyn's dragonmark has changed, NOT a second dragonmark.

Bronwyn gets another use of shield but let's make it such she now has two uses of shield that recharge after a short or long rest.

If you want to use shield, either remind me ahead of time like "If Bronwyn gets hit, she will cast shield as a reaction" or tell me after the fact and I'll adjust.

Of course it would be best if you tell me ahead of time so we don't have to 'adjust' so a reminder to the 'forgetful GM' would be helpful. :)

Earth Tremor. Your mark whispers to you. Its meaning can be unclear. Unusually small or faint

When you're stressed, the mark hisses audibly. Your dragonmark is exceptionally large.

Can you imagine how insufferable Bronwyn would have been if the mark was a source of constant pain? I think everyone dodged a bullet there :)

Action 3:

Bronwyn's neck and shoulder began to burn in an oddly familiar manner. She didn't think much of it other than assuming she had picked up some sort of hideous bedbug in the Temple that was burrowing under her flawless skin. Not, that is, until the others began discovering aberrant dragonmarks on their bodies. She had felt this before but only once in her life.

Her eyes widened in fear and she dug frantically in her bag for one of her mirrors. She held it up to her neck and promptly burst into tears. "It's changed! It's no longer a true Mark of Sentinel," she wailed. "And they'll all notice because it's bigger!" Her altered dragonmark had spread from her neck downwards to encompass her shoulder. If she had been thinking more clearly, she may have been grateful it had moved to her shoulder rather than her face but she was close to being inconsolable. She buried her face in her hands, "I'm going to be disowned." . To make matters worse, a loud hissing sound emitted from the still glowing dragonmark which caused a new round of sobbing and the wizard began to hyperventilate.
