OOC: Here's what I have so far:

Vi: ???
Fendir: raging and attempting to bend bars
Squeak: ???
Bronwyn: ???
Dusk: help Fendir with trying to bend the bars
Palisade: try to slow down the moving wall

Remember that you can use your action to 'help' someone which gives them advantage on their check.

Questions?

@Bronwyn: the bars are made of metal (iron alloy?); they are magnetic and conduct heat

I don't understand what you mean by Dusk is on the side of the portcullis that is meant to get out. Do you mean her side is meant to go to the outside of the temple?

Seeing Dusk teleport to the other side, Vi shouted, "Don't suppose you can do that with a passenger?"

She extended her search to the rest of the hallway, looking for loose stones or finger-sized holes that might have the release in them.

***(In case of success)***

The stonework here was old, but well done, and the stones were tight together. Vi pressed each one as rapidly as she dared, hoping one of them was loose, or sticking out slightly, or anything that would set one apart from the rest.

She didn't find anything like that, but down low against the floor she did find one with a corner chipped out. It was so subtle she almost missed it. Hoping it wasn't just damage from some poor soul previously triggering the trap, she felt around with her finger, trying to determine if it was a mechanism of some sort.

"Aha!" she cried, as the she wedged the chipped piece of stone out with her fingernail. Behind it was a gap, and within the gap was a wire. Curling her finger around the wire she gave it a pull, and the ....A) Stone door ground to a halt AND/OR B) the portcullis gears began to grind into motion, lifting the iron door with a squeal.

OOC: I am trying to say that usually bars are meant to keep something in rather than keep something out, although they work both ways.

Let me see... if you imagine a cage then Dusk, who is on north side of the portcullis, is 'inside' the cage. Better?

Bronwyn flipped her ponytail and mused out loud, "I guess I shouldn't be surprised that wind failed. What I do know is that fire is almost always the answer. Fire can soften metal and make it easier to bend, right?"

The wizard watched as her rogue friend looked for a physical method for stopping them from being crushed. "Did you solve it, Vi? If not, I think a fireball is in order to soften the metal of the portcullis. Maybe then Fendir can actually bend the bars enough for us to get through."

If Vi can't figure out how to stop the trap, Bronwyn will throw a fireball at the portcullis and sculpt the spell to create safe pockets for people

Hmmm - doesn't Palisade have smithing tools? There should be something in there to help, hopefully.
If this thing has enough force behind it that it isn't bothered by a thousand pounds of Warforged, and can shear through a tempered metal blade, this is likely not helping.

"Palisade;" Squeak informed his brother "Your skill with metalwork makes it more likely you can take out a bar in the portcullis. Ram it and get to work. I will buy what time I can."
Decision made, Squeak lay face down down on the floor directly in front of the stone, maximising the area he could put in place in the stone. Desperately he pried at the stone flooring, hoping to displace enough stone to cause it to catch.

"I'm sorry pretty but it's a solo trick that one, else I'd love to share."

She returned to concentrating on the bars as Fendir wrestled with them, until Bronwyn shouted and the air seemed to explode around them.

Blinking furiously Dusk was stunned they were all still breathing, but quickly turned her attention to the wall east of the portcullis.

A shadowy form coalesced in her hands as she moved, and by the time she was there she held an obsidian maul which she proceeded to smash repeatedly in to the wall, loosening up the bricks and mortar for the others to break through.

Watching Fendir destroy the statues, Vi shook her head in wonder. He really was an odd fellow.

Taking out her rope, she tied herself into a tight harness. "I'll see what's up before we start using magic." Handing the rope to Palisade, she said, "Hold tight, give me just enough slack to jump, but don't let me fall into the lava."

Gingerly, she stepped out onto the first platform. She kept one foot on the solid ground, and one of the platform, and waited several seconds to see what happened.

Assuming this doesn't trigger a trap, she'll inch her way cautiously to the edge of the first platform, and see if she can see anything different from there.

Because of how formative the 'forged looked, Bronwyn often forgot that they had fears. She moved up beside Squeak and took his huge hand in both of hers. "You can fly Squeak, remember? That means you can't fall. It'll be okay. If you're brave enough to fight like you did on an airship against a vampire and the Emerald Claw, you can handle a few platforms."

Action 2:

Bronwyn's nose wrinkled in disgust as the creatures manifested on the middle platform.

arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

The wizard had read about these creatures but had never seen one before. "Why did they have to make them so ugly? Would it be too much trouble for the yugoloths to have made cute loyal hounds? Although then I'd probably feel bad for burning them to a crisp so it's probably better that they appear so hideous."

She looked at where her friend was standing on the platform but was never good with distances. As a warning she made sure Vi knew what she did about the canoloths. :Make sure you stay at least thirty feet away from those canoloths. They have a barbed tongue that is known to lash out anywhere from twenty to thirty feet. They also have excellent hearing and sense of smell because they have no eyes so invisibility would be wasted on them. Ranged attacks would seem most prudent against them."

Not quoting the info verbatim included in the turn recap but everyone can assume that Bronwyn relayed all that info to the group

Question about those platforms... they hang by chains from the ceiling... are the chains rigid or is there give in them? Meaning, could one push at the nearest platform to move it forward towards the middle platform to make the 20' jump a bit shorter? Or is the platform perhaps too heavy to move by mere 'forged-power?

Anyways, unless the critters want to be the ones making the preilous jumps, I do think we have the reach on them with various spells. So why not just sit back and take potshots at them, and with luck they try to jump at us, fail and barbeque themselves?

Squeak wrote:

Who would build these things? What's the intent? Were they just trying to have fun? If so, how would they 'enjoy' it?

Is it because someone needed a way to get into this place but difficult enough to prevent others from coming in?

Couldn't they think of a better way?

With all their resources available (traps, magic, etc.), I think I can get a kindergarten class to design a better system. LOL

Any insight from our history or is this sort of thing all speculative fiction?

Would make more sense as a defensive measure if there was (or had once been) pulleys and chains to move the bridges out of alignment, assuming they could also be moved to make one seamless bridge over the lava pit. Then people on one side could use the pulleys to prevent anyone on the other side from crossing over in case of invasion or breakout... perhaps the pulleys broke and the bridge got somehow stuck in this middle-stage by accident (chains got tangled up or something...)?

Oh aye, I agree that it's still needlessly complicated - the author just wanted to make a super-mario-platformer-battle -style event and did away with the rationale, I'm guessing. Bronwyn's eyebrows shot up in surprise as Fendir launched himself towards the platform. She was beginning to think that their dour companion had a death wish. Or maybe he was feeling like life just wasn't enjoyable. Why else would one make a dangerous jump over lava to face two formidable creatures all by themselves? She did what she could to encourage him so that he realized life was worth living. "You're a valuable member of our team, Fendir. You have much to live for!"
