Dungeon Master S |
Whistle Pig can hear the sound of giants talking about 300 feet into the cave. It's idle chatter, but they don't seem to notice him at that range...
Raen Varkath |
During the night, Raen takes both scrolls and copies them into her spellbook while the others sleep.
"As a moth is to flame, so the halfing is to trouble," Raen says, beckoning him back so that she can glamer the whole group.
Invisibility Sphere.
Dungeon Master S |
Raen cloaks the party in arcane invisibility. As they approach carefully... 2d20 ⇒ (2, 19) = 21 they spot a pair of troll guards. There's something different about these trolls. These bulky creatures have beady eyes, and rocky skin studded with small crystals. Both have jutting underbites holding large, crystalline teeth.
A rock troll! This is the kind of troll storybooks use. Afraid of the light and strong as they are stupid. Ask your questions.
Further into the cave you spy a different creature, clearly more intimidating and intelligent. This hairless, hunchbacked giant has cruel tusks and two enormous, blunt-clawed fists that look strong enough to shatter stone. If you pass a Knowledge (Local) DC 21 check, you can ID it and begin asking questions.
Dammit! You can hear voices from the cave opening heading your way from behind!

Raen wracks her brain for tales of these creatures. Surprise action pending knowledge.
Dungeon Master S |
Raen knows that the most famous rock troll story of all time involved a halfling tricking them into arguing until the sun rose. Sunlight, you see, turns them to stone!
The other creature is a buggane! Oops, should be Arcane for the Buggane They don't have any special defenses, but they're a terror on offense. They can knock foes down, rend them, even pass through rock to attack.

Five foot step, cast protection from evil on self. AC goes to 22 with the extra deflection bonus.

Knowing that Ushyle will run headlong into danger, Vael places a hand on the half-elf. Murmuring a low chant, the Milanite's skin hardens and takes on a bark-like texture.
Barkskin on Ushyle. +3 to AC for him.
Raen Varkath |
Know Arcana is +22 for me, so no problem.
Keeping all but Ham hidden with her invisibility glamer, Raen isolates the nearest rock troll by ripping moisture from the cave walls along arcane threads and transferring the heat back to the walls. A plane of ice splits the cave in two. 24 hit points, break DC 23.
"Careful. The buggane in the back can move through stone. The ice will only slow it down."
Dungeon Master S |
Ham slides off, ready for combat! Vael and Ushyle use magic to protect themselves against the power of a giant's might. Raen opts for some battlefield control!

Doxon also girds his flesh to weather the storm of violence. Hamilton takes the opening provided by WP's sling and nails the giant on the kneecap.
The Rock troll responds in kind, biting and clawing at the brave man:

Hamilton barely avoids being rent asunder!
The other troll begins to smash the Wall of Ice, trying to break through:
SMASH!: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 but the wall holds!
The buggane busts out of the wall, right by Hamilton! The roughrider quickly finds himself in trouble.
Worse, the sound of battle stirs the giants who were on their way. They rush into the area. Double move from both.

The buggane worries Raen more than the giant reinforcements, so she grabs Doxon by the collar and yanks him along a dimensional thread directly into melee.
Dimension Door. Note @ Ushyle: this occurs after Ushyle's turn in initiative, so he should still benefit from invisibility sphere for his first attack.
Ushyle |
Ushyle grips Milani's Thorn and tries not to grit his teeth — that's when he notices his new form the most, when he does so.
As Black moves into melee range, the half-elf banes his weapon against giants and strikes!

Ham lays into the troll with furious swings of his flaming warhammer.

Damage on Hit:1d8 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 7 + (6) = 17
... And if slack chatter is to be believed, cracks the rock troll across the jaw, which breaks and brings the giant down. Ham quickly uses the hammer to light the remains, which seem to be especially vulnerable to the flame and the smoldering hulk dies. He turns and heads back to the rear guard of the party. On his way, he sees how AJ has been moved and he whistles to her and clicks with his teeth. AJ seems to be irritated with the gesture, but obeys and begins to kick and stomp at the giant [Black].
