I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

"If the Beast was human, or elven, I'd agree with you. I'm looking at the greater good here, though. The law, justice, none of that is going to mean a hill of beans when the shit hits the fan out there.
It's more important than whether or not an artificial construct that isn't even alive commited some crimes. Actual lives are at stake.
I hope your sanctimonious drivel helps you sleep at night. I really do."

The other elf sits without in the Gallery.

See, some other bastard is behind this - that creature was trying to cry - its beast by nature of its appearance, not by its heart... I say we get the REAL criminals and show them your Lepidstadt justice

Burning that big old lug won't do no good - we have to demand DEMAND the prosecutor looks for the real culprit - those chemworks wonks I say.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

No; that's not working with the crowd.

Larissa sits quietly, watching the proceedings and listening to the whispering, more than a little troubled.

If he's here in Lepidstadt, he will be in danger. If he loses his temper, Lepdstadt will be in danger. He will have to leave or this will never end. But to where? How far?

"Well, as much as I enjoy having a battle of wits with an unarmed man, We really do have important things to do. Figuring out who actually committed the robbery, for instance. Instead of just charging the first town drunk, village idiot or sentient construct that stumbles across our path." Edwin tells his N'Kai as they make their way back to the courtroom.

"I'm sure he means well, but he's simply too lazy to be an excellent investigator. You have to look for things as they ARE, not as you would like them to be. Bias simply cannot enter into it." He stops and gets a funny look on his face.

"Alas, there even I fall short, I must admit. Though I struggle against it, I am biased." He sighs resignedly.

"I simply cannot abide stupid people."

As they reenter the courtroom, Edwin takes a single glance around the room, noting the murmurs and general atmosphere of tension.

"I rest my case,..." He murmurs to N,Kai.

"Ignorance can be cured. Eventually. But stupid is forever." He tells the wizardly warrior as they take their seats at the defense table.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

The second day winds down, and the creature is led out again.

The crowd seems a lot more surly. There's plenty out there to pelt the beast on the way to the paddy wagon with all manner of vegetable matter.

"I feel much the same, my friend. We are definitely wasting valuable time and resources dealing with this farce of a trial and we may find the real culprit slipping through our fingers. Yet I hope that by freeing Dobitoc we are somehow foiling his or her greater scheme. Do not despair, for chance of making justice always presents itself, sooner or later."

"On the other hand, few folks complain about being completely stupid. Maybe they are not doing so bad. Look at Prosecutor Otto Heiger over there, for instance..."

Edwin looks thoughtful, then nods once in agreement. His almost-smirk shows briefly, then vanishes.

"True. There is almost always a bright side." He agrees.

When the court dismisses for the day, Edwin motions to the others to join them. He walk in silence, watching the crowd.

"As much as it pains me to admit it. The pernicious prosecutor is correct. Right or wrong, the crowd is,... unlikely to take an innocent verdict as well as we would prefer." Edwin tells the others.

"As best I could tell yesterday, no one person or persons is leading the crowd to riot. It seems to be, a genuine, normal, if pig-headed, reaction to the overall situation. How was the situation at the jail last night? I suggest that we once again volunteer to assist guarding the jail, I mean Dobitoc, tonight. That will give us an opportunity to examine the premises and assist in planning 'Plan B', in case the trial actually does not go well."

"Any thoughts? Ideas?"

HP 53/53 Dromite Soulknife 5 / Pyrokineticist 1 map

In a small voice, Leik says, "disguise me as the beast with magic. Push for the bonfire. I will survive. Judge said no magic but convince them with your words. They can have their fire, and the riot will be smaller when I manipulate the blaze.."

Edwin opens his mouth, obviously to decry the idea, but he stops when he notices Leik's latest fashion.

Edwin muses, pursing his lips thoughtfully as he straightens his cravat.

"All right. We have a 'Plan C'. Any other thoughts?"

HP 53/53 Dromite Soulknife 5 / Pyrokineticist 1 map

"I can leave the skinsuit behind in the fire as evidence of death."

M Human Cleric / 6

Off-handedly, Rholf finally chimes in again, "What if we made it look like Dobitoc got burned to cinders in the jail, and were able to sneak him out? It would likely still require a portable hole, or some working of spells, but it gives the mob the perception of what they wanted, side-steps the innocence verdict and chaos that would ensue, and gets Dobitoc his freedom. Aside from the mechanism with which we would get Dobitoc out of the city, all we'd really need were some ashes, perhaps some bones, and Leik's already 'expert' knowledge of flame."

HP 53/53 Dromite Soulknife 5 / Pyrokineticist 1 map

"what if dobitoc wasnt in the paddy wagon when it got to the jail. What if it was me in the suit? Then do your plan. Hard to smuggle him out any other way."

"to start the fire, one of us disguised as a townperson throw In a molotov cocktail. Maybe hand some more out as well. disguise dobitoc with my hat in a back room of the court and i put on the skin suit to replace him, to be led to the jail."

Edwin grimaces slightly.

"IF we go that route, I would prefer that you take his place, rather than burn down the jail. If your quite certain you can survive immolation? I would prefer that WE were not the cause of any untoward damage to people or property. If we can avoid it."

"I wish I could say this was all unnecessary. But with the emotions running hotter than than a fireball spell, I think it is good that we prepare an, alternative route for Dobitoc." Edwin smiles a small, grim, smile.

"Come. Let us escort our defendant to the jail. Perhaps a closer inspection of the premises will suggest another avenue of egress for our large friend."

HP 53/53 Dromite Soulknife 5 / Pyrokineticist 1 map

"yes, in my recent study of the fires I used from the chemicule factory, I learned how to turn fire into smoke or fireworks. I'm thinking fireworks will scare them away from the fire. They will probably think its something of the nature of the beast to explode in fire. Leave behind the skin suit and I sneak away. The bonfire is probably gonna be big enough I can make smoke amd fireworks for confusion and fear."

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

You guys get to the jail eventually.

There's a pretty big crowd gathering.

They all look drunk.

Female Changeling (Annis Hag) Oracle of Life 6; 32/32 hp

Larissa listens to the planning, not having anything to offer, but she's quite sure that whatever the outcome, they and Dobitoc will need to be leaving town.

Edwin casts a scathing glance over the crowd.

"Hm. A combination of high tension and low alcohol tolerance. Splendid."

He smiles.
"Shall we pay our respects to the defendant, and those who guard him this fine night?" He says cheerfully.

M Human Cleric / 6

"Indeed." Rholf says distractedly.

My guess is that any mob will attempt their play tonight. We can attempt to weather it or we can try to go out into the mob and take out the ring leaders. Risky but without ring leaders the mob will fizzle out.

"I concur. As I am prone to be suspicious enough to expect the worst in people. However, let us not go making examples of those who may not exist. It is possible,... <Cough> that this crowd is merely the result of the trial and all of the tensions surrounding it."

Edwin scans the crowd again, thoughtfully this time.

"If they do indeed become, unruly, let us attempt to reason with them first. Then, if they are continuously riled back up by one or more consistent, persistent voices, we have found our culprit." He smirks. Then taps his chin thoughtfully as they make their way around the edge to the jail entrance.

"In fact, let us try a little pre-emptive strike against any would-be trouble makers. A single, rhetoric-spewing rabble-rouser will be easier to spot before the crowd becomes noisy." He takes a breath, then turns back to the others.

"While you have all proven yourselves to be consummate professionals, I feel that I must ask all of you to refrain from violence. Even if 'threatened'. A few bruises from being pelted with vegetables will injure only our egos. But even pulling a weapon, much less using it, would cause more damage than any magic, much less mere words, can possibly repair. Whatever you do, try not to hurt anyone. And um, NO fire. Please." He adds, deliberately NOT looking at Leik.

Edwin flutters his long fingers towards the jail entrance.

"Just, stand there and try to look,... sympathetic. Not threatening." He finishes with only slight hint of exasperation.

"Ladies, Gentlefolk. Good persons one and all." Edwin begins in a voice that is not shouted, but carries well, getting attention. He speaks not with intensity, but with feeling. He almost radiates compassion.

"It is late. We are all tired. Please, by the name of whatever Power you pray to at your own hearth, let us not say or do anything while weary with sleep that we will regret come the light of day." He begins, slowly, tenderly.

"I will not pretend to know you individually. But I know what you are going through. You are not the first to be fearful, or frightened, or angry, or hurt. Or,..." He looks at one middle aged woman near the front. And Edwin's eyes glisten with unshed tears.

Oh man, I'm good sometimes. :)

"Believe me. Trading hurt for hurt does not help. It only makes it worse. I know." He says in a tone that speaks of past pain.

Then standing a little straighter, and in a voice meant to carry all the way to the back of the crowd, "You do not want vengeance. You want Justice. Justice for your loved ones. Justice for you. Justice for your City. Trust in Justice to do the right thing. I ask you not to trust me, but to trust yourselves!"

"Yes, trust in the choices you have already made! You saw fit to select and place the Judges in the position to oversee justice for your city. Trust in your choice. Trust in them. Trust them to uphold your faith, and do the right thing for you. And fulfill their faith in you, who placed them there."

"We all just need to rest. And pray. We shall meet tomorrow at the courthouse. Justice will be done." He says with an air of weary finality, not inviting argument or discussion, as if it was something that they had all already agreed upon.

I gotta do some stuff for a while IRL at this juncture.

She's not a troll or a hag, literally anyway; that's just the avatar pic this avatar has.

"So, what is our plan? Should we check on Dobitoc and the guards to make sure they are alright??"

Yay, XP!!!

Yay XP indeed! :)

Edwin looks to Leik, only a brief moment of confusion crosses his features as he sees the magical disguise and not the insectoid friend of recent adventures.

"Hm. Perhaps. If absolutely needed. Certainly preferable to flame or blade. But let us do save that as a last resort, shall we? Any untoward confusion or startlement could also lead to,... less than desirable consequences." Edwin says to Leik with a small smile.

"Hm, what? Oh, you're too kind." Edwin says, only half paying attention. Although the compliment obviously pleases him.

"Yes? Yes. Let us check on our defendant and the guards, by all means. I do not think we should retire in comfort just yet. This group was obviously just feeling, angsty. If that is the worst we face, all will be well. But the night is young yet. And I am certainly not tired enough to sleep!" he says with an almost pleasant smile on his face.

"Ahoy inside! We are the defense counselors, come to check on our client, and the well-being of his guards. Kindly open up please." Edwin says, not bothering to pound on the door.

I was planning something a bit more... abrupt. That was well handled.

Edwin looks at Aethor with a self-satisfied gleam in his eye, and nods politely in thanks.

What next?

Asking the guards to open the door. Talk to them and check on Dobitoc.

I AM THE LORD OF ALL HELLFIRE!!!!!

They let you in and lead you down to the basement where his cell is.

Edwin thanks them with the seriousness due this evening.
On the way to Dobitoc he politely inquires as to how they are doing. He keeps a close watch on their behaviors and actions. Because he suspects that the fun is not over yet tonight. And he's hoping that the guards are not getting,... twitchy, about guarding their prisoner.

Per 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

"Thank you gentlemen." Edwin says solemnly as they reach the cell containing Dobitoc.

"Be at ease. We are merely here to check on the defendant. And to ensure that you are holding up well under the, tensions, that seem prevalent. Please feel free to call upon us for assistance. IF you need any, of course. We are here to assist if you wish." Edwin says with a relaxed sideways half smile.

Sodding damnation... what dog has the thrice poxed Innkeep got in this hunt? That was an oversight on our parts - we should have had a 'word' with the Innkeeps and sellers of alcohol. What now? Do we 'decapitate' the leadership so to speak? Perhaps a spell from a distance or an illusion?
